16:31 I see what you did with the Unown letters here😉 Also, I like how you rendered each of the beta Pokémon into how Gamefreak would’ve rendered them in each generation.
That one Pokemon based on the fertility deity is a concept I myself adapted into a new Pokemon called Trumpetoid, a mono Dark type that plays music through its elongated nose like a flute or a trumpet and lulls enemies into sleep so as to make a getaway, or even steal things from people. If a Pokemon or a person is agitated, a Trumpetoid can play calming music to calm said patients. I even have an idea for a Mega Evolution where it obtains the look of a snake charmer with flaps of hair curling into a turban, sits with crossed legs, floats slightly off the ground like Mega Alakazam, and it gains the Psychic type.
I LOVE the Jun Okutani concept art. It's like a glimpse at a world where the Pokemon games had a totally diferent vibe and style. The "steel crab / scorpion" at 12:03 looks like an inspiration for the Metagross line.

The more I look at that longship pokemon design the more and more it looks like it got reworked into Lugia. It's got the same head and those stripes probably became the fin things on its back. It would certainly explain why Lugia is associated with the ocean to begin with.
While I see the resemblance, Lugia was initially designed for the movie it appeared in. And it was initially called Pokemon X, with an “X” pattern on its belly. I think there’s a DYKG video explaining it in depth. So I doubt it.
@@nuggit6480 The original design had that but they scrapped it clearly. They probably lifted traits from this one to make the completed version. As a pixel artist who doesn't know how to draw traditionally, sketching in pixels is definitely something I'm familiar with! It can sometimes be tough to recreate the feeling of something in pixel art purely based off of reference, and being able to sketch it out and then refine the lines and colors later is helpful much the same way I imagine it is for regular artists. It's also not only a restriction of the medium as is mentioned in the video! Even with non-sprite sketches available, a pixel art sketch can still be a useful tool to get started.

I really enjoy the refinement of the design process and can be super proud that I've explored all the options that have lead me to the final design. That's just my opinion tho, keep up with your incredible work!

And I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the scrapped XY designs too considering they had a WAY better flamingo Pokemon just sitting on the shelf only to give us Flamigo 3 gens later.
Ruineye is cool and all, but by looking at the initial concept i thought the creature was Unown's evolution, like how Zygarde works. Collect enough of them and you get a black obelisk eldritch deity type of thing
Taking my time with my designs and not rushing is something I needed to hear. I have the bad habit of finishing a design for a character in one go and then becoming dissatisfied with it later, only to redesign it again and rinse repeat
Yeah that's definitely not a bad thing! Sometimes you just need to take a break to get a new perspective, but it can also be a sign that you're improving as an artist!
I actually don't know how to draw but am making a fan game. So my process is very similar to these rough sketches. I started with a big list of what roles I needed sprites to fill and currently I'm drawing sprites. The fact the max resolution is only 96x96 is helpful since it compensated for my lack of line art skills. Not saying pixel art is easier by definition tho.
Would've loved to see Longship in Sword n Shield. Imagine the G-Max form for that thing. But you gotta make cuts as part of the process and not every good idea can come to mind. Side tangent: So Ive always had a problem with the narrative design of pokemon games where you run into a roadblock in the game and and you only need an HM to remove it. It's nice design choice but kind of dull when you can teach HMs at any level. I think a great iteration the formula would applying a souls like skill point leveling system that has moves with stat thresholds to make each mon more unique to their palyers.
5:51 I'm sorry WHAT !!? I literally have a design that looks exactly like that that I drew in like 2012 ish. Why am I only now finding out GameFreak had the exact same idea! Wth. Next, you're gonna tell me it evolves from a fish...
I’m one of the few people who like all 3 elemental monkeys, but I’ll also be one of the first people to agree that we were robbed. I really like how beta Simipour has a lot of sass to it and its dress looks kinda like a folded umbrella, and while I do think beta Simisear stands out a bit too much from the other two (a bean compared to two beanpoles lol) I definitely appreciate how much more it leans into the dopey demeanor.
I like the idea of a role reversal with the boat Pokémon. Sort of how Dragonite and Gyaradose are opposites to their irl counterparts (a Western dragon that has the temperament of an Eastern one and an Eastern sea serpent that has the temperament of a Western one). The viking ship could be a Water/Dragon that pretends to be friendly and fair passengers across the sea, but half of its trips end with the entire group of passengers "mysteriously" disappearing 😋.
Can you show the Pokemon when you say their name? I understand english but I don't know their english names. When you say : "it looks like " It would help me a lot to see their design, so I can understand what you are talking about ! Nice video
It’s from the Adventures manga. The protagonists go by the names of their game versions in the manga, so there her name is Sapphire. She’s pretty much the opposite of her anime counterpart, being wild and living out in nature like a cavewoman, with a love of Pokémon battling and a desire to beat all the gyms. Ruby, by contrast, is an insanely skilled trainer, but despises battling as well as the cold and brutish appearance he feels he gives off in battle, so instead he likes to enjoy competing in Pokémon contests and has a keen sense of style and fashion to compliment his interest.
The black stone thing looking one with runes on it is my favorite. I most definitely want to see that used in the future. Not sure how exactly theyd do it. We have "baby" forms. But it would be cool to see "old" Pokémon. Where certain Pokémon change super late in life. It may be a stupid idea. I just thought of it and who would be ideal candidates.
Can't believe my favorite Tropius was so close to receiving more love wth a three stage Pokemon...but then I wouldn't have gotten your banana Pokemon. Difficult decisions. 😅
No love for Gen 5 :( But for real, these are awesome! I love the breakdown of each different approach you took from the leaks, finding what you're trying to achieve with each design and accomplishing it to the best of your ability! I want to be more patient with my art, and I'm working on it, but it's hard not to get discouraged early on. Thanks for another great video!
Its interesting that the Gen 5 art team sketched the pokemon as sprites and worked backwards from considering that is exactly how most of the Gen 1 pokemon were made. I wonder if this was intentional or just kind of how the process went back then?
6:27 That wasn’t the case at all. Some developers said that this would be their last game in the series to work on, as other people would work on the later games.

"Beta Gurdurr and Conkeldurr look unappealing" right because the final designs are SOOOOO much more pleasing to look at
i love honking my conkeldurr's nose thank you very much
Ruineye is cool and all, but by looking at the initial concept i thought the creature was Unown's evolution, like how Zygarde works. Collect enough of them and you get a black obelisk eldritch deity type of thing
That’s a cool idea too!
Shoutouts to jack for turning leaked Pokemon design into mvc iron man level 1 sableye evolution thats so fire with the red with gold teeth 👹👹
These posts always brighten up my day
Taking my time with my designs and not rushing is something I needed to hear.
@zeppie_ Thanks! that's definitely a more positive way to look at it hfhdgd
What is lacking in umiboato design is basically what the smogon community did with Naviathan.
I think that Ruineye is supposed to be a gecko with and the pillar thing is it’s tail, great design though I love how differently we interpreted
Your last one is giving Yubel from Yugioh! Love your work ❤
I could see umiboto and lapras having a common ancestor
7:42 that looks a Lapras evo.
Also. Gives me Giratina Vibes.
Im pretty sure ruineyes original design had the rock as a tail
I'm now picturing a Runerigus variant that's unown tied
20:05 if they went through with these, I'd call them Pelturr, Bouldurr and Eldsterkurr (the last from eld/elder and Fullsterkur)
23:20 Meanwhile, Latios and Latias looking away...
You should talk to the GameQbator Labs team and become one of their Metazoo artists!
Can you show the Pokemon when you say their name? I understand english but I don't know their english names.
When you say : "it looks like "
It would help me a lot to see their design, so I can understand what you are talking about !
Nice video
1:51 me who is eating a full plate of macaroni and cheese: 👀

No love for Gen 5 :(
But for real, these are awesome!
It would’ve been a very authentic way to replicate the design sensibilities of Gen 1!
Ken is the best pokemon artist
Sableye will probably never get an evolution since it has a Mega ;-; but this one looked so cool, I love the runnic bazooka
Rip all the employees who got doxxed by the leaks.
6:27 That wasn’t the case at all. Some developers said that this would be their last game in the series to work on, as other people would work on the later games.
