But you've already taught what it means to be passionate in all of your videos (especially this one and the Elorimanda one): it's taking your time to make a design as much to your liking as possible, because nothing quite hits like a well-done design. Maybe you still don't feel it in your gut, but that passion already flows through the blood of your work, both your designs and your videos. I've rescued many of my own fakemon designs by applying your lessons from the Elorimanda video. Don't know if you'll see this, but I owe you a big thank you for my learnings!
I definitely relate to "jack of all trades, master of none", I'm fairly decent at a lot of things but it seems like I take a hit in how fast I develop skills past a certain point because I can't keep a sustained and focused effort on just one thing. This video was great, and hopefully I'll be able to convince myself to get back into art soon so I can follow the advice you shared!

As someone who is a budding Fakemon designer this helped out a lot. I got like 5 regions in the works (too many ideas flowing in my head lol) and ive enjoyed designing them. Im very passionate about it. I do have slightly different steps but it works for me. But this helps with some confidence which tends to waver off and on..
1. this is really solid character design advice in general which is what i look for in fakemon advice, so i really liked this video 2. i love the gun bird A Lot
I have no clue what kind of specific value this could hope for the designs, but i love the idea that the transition between the middle and final evolutions is a HUGE difference, like a crazy glow up. I might be exaggerating, but I find it reallt interesting because finding a good middle evolution is very difficult. The one thing that I find amazing here is how clearly the designs are focused, shown greatly in the final evolutions. I have no clue what each one says or means, but each final evolution feels like its telling me "I'm who I am" in a human way like when you can a badly written character from a deeper person. Each final form feels like a person that you would be able to long a long, good chat to, which I personally enjoy and love that idea. My favorite part about art is not being a great drawer but still being to love and appreciate it!
My sister and I really like that quote! "jack of all trades, master of none, oftentimes better than, the master of one." just because it's so perfect for us two!
I've been struggling a lot with the idea of being a perfectionist. For me, everything I make has to be the best thing i've EVER made. This philosophy of creating is super unhealthy and it makes me feel as if i'm losing passion for making things. I've slowly been trying to come around to the idea of "done is better than perfect" and hearing your take on being passionate and doing things you enjoy is extremely comforting. I've been watching for years now and you've been a huge inspiration to me and a driving force in why I started my own channel. Thank you for all the fun, comforting content! 🥳
Chillbilly isnt a freakishly muscular humanoid start *nooo!!!!!!!* In all seriousness, I love both this video and its designs! Your thoughts on art anf imprivment really resonate with me, and hearing what you habe to say makes me smile. Also, Tomlock is so badass, i love it! I also like how the water final had two sets of arms for extra expression! So cute!
I'm not an artist but I still love these sorts of videos where artists break down their process of creating something. I love learning about what inspires artists and how they translate that inspiration with their art style.
THIS IS MY DREAMMMM POKEMON VERSE!!! And the water lobster is far and beyond my dream starter. This video is a field day for someone from the same part of the world, I hope you indulge yourself more often lol
As soon as you said the Hahbah region was based on New England, my heart soared! I'm designing a *currently unnamed* fakemon region based around my home state of Maine! This video is an absolute savior for me! I've been working on it on and off for at least 5 years, with many of the designs not getting past a theoretical name, but watching this has definitely boosted my confidence! Thank you sincerely from a very enthusiastic Maine artist!!!!!
I actually really love that you went with a grass goat with a football theme, even though I'm not big on sports. But there are football stadiums that use goats to mow the grass instead of electric mowers. Most of all, I love how you talk about art and design, seeing how concepts coalesce into an amazing finished product, and the process you put into everything you do. It's very inspiring as an artist. I'm (slowly) working on a game, and I can't help but keep coming back to your videos to learn how to better create my own creatures. Plus, you have successfully put Lovecraftian horror and Pokemon onto a single channel, and I cannot overstate how much I love that.
I've recently gotten into design/concepting after years of working exclusively in 3D making production art and vids like this are a goldmine! Thankyou Jack It doesn't hurt that the designs themselves are incredible too! I honestly can't pick a favourite, any of em could end up on the team.
I appreciate the honesty and openness regarding your passion. As a writer (who works veeery slowly) I’ve asked myself a lot of the same questions. I see other writers pump out loads of incredible work and win awards and such, and I feel like I’m just not as dedicated. But then I remember that passion isn’t just enthusiasm or productivity. I think true passion is the willingness to commit, to keep working even if you don’t feel like it that day or aren’t having fun. Jack, I don’t think you have any less passion for what you do than those other creators. You wouldn’t be able to see a three year project to its conclusion without intense passion for your craft. Some passion burns bright, some burns steady. 🙂
One of the most common mistakes for fakemon designers is starting with the first evolution stage. Ken Sugimori himself confirms that nearly all pokemon are designed with the final stage first. That means you create a really solid design to start with, and then subtract elements to create the earlier stages. Most people fail to achieve the vibe of true pokemon designs because they start with the first form and then try to add things, making it feel more tacked on instead of having a unique identity.
You are the guy that made me appreciate all fakemon content. I didn't really know it existed before you. You are great and so are your drawings. Keep up with your amazing content!
Jack was one of the driving forces behind me deciding recently to make my own fakemon drawing channel and it is so comforting to hear that even at his level those feelings still creep in. Thank you for your words
I would consider you to be one of the best Fakemon artists I know of and it's wild to me that someone I consider to be one of the best feels the need to preface the video with "I don't think I'm that amazing at this but here are my opinions on it". I'm a pro artist in the games industry and constantly battle the imposter syndrome but you're right, it is kind of comforting to know that people I think of as amazing artists struggle with it as well. There's the assumption that every other artist I admire knows that they're great and that's why their art is so good. We're definitely all harder on ourselves but it's something I'm getting better at and I hope the best for you as well. You're REALLY good at what you do
I am diggin' the hunter turkey Poke'mon! Inspired me to head back to my Fake'mon region for NY that I started a month or so ago. These tips were very helpful. :)
just ordered two of your figurines! one for me and one for my best friend who shared with me your mazda series almost three years ago. couldn’t be happier to be supporting a local artist from lil Rhody!
i've actually been thinking about revisiting a fakemon design i worked on a few years ago, this video is genuinely such a help with my struggles on it!! definitely gonna rewatch once i get back into the nitty gritty of the design process tbh
You Are good at what you do. You are by far my favorite fakemon designer! Your concepts and execution always make me wish the Pokémon were real and I could put them in my team in a playthrough. And that is ultimately what you want from a design I feel.
something i have noticed you being passionate about is improving yourself. this is especially apparent when you did reworks on fakemons you had designed previously and talking about how you could see yourself improving bit by bit
Thank you so much for the content you make. As someone who really struggles with comparing myself to other artists it’s so refreshing to see someone I look up to so much that struggles with the same thing from time to time and overcomes it. I’ve learned so much from y’all over the years and I’m looking forward to many more!
I’ve been making fakemon for a long time now and I’ve always seen you as a great inspiration I’m glad that you made this video for me to help Improve not only my art but also my motivation to finally work on only one region and stick to it as i have made so many failed regions and i hope to put my newest one on UA-cam soon also gobshots line is my favorite
Decided to actually take notes and this whole video was filled with so much amazing advice. Not just for drawing Fakemon, but general character design tips as well. Thank you so much for this! Also, Tomlock looks SO sick!
Bro makes some of THE BEST fakemon I’ve ever seen, and he makes other vids to! I swear, stick him in a box, with a random peice of media, and some art tools, and let him do his thing for, like, a week, and he’ll have almost mastered the art style! Keep making more, man!
This inspired me to get back into my Pokémon designs. I think something that you really hammered down as well is don’t only design Pokémon, but present them with emotion and make sure they feel like they can be your friend.
Would you ever make an in depth video explaining each brush pack you’re selling on the gumroad? I think it would not only make a great advertisement but also do well to provide tutorials and tricks for artists that are new to using brush types and want to branch out to try new ones.
i love snipster. i like the look of the concept sketches of its final evo more than what you went with, but in keeping with its theme, i can see why what you went with tells a more satisfying story.
Thank you for the wise message at the beginning 👍🏻 I'm currently trying to get into many creative hobbies which I could end up liking. But often I secretly condemn myself as attention-seeking or passionless. It's humble to hear from such a great artist like yourself that even professionals doubt their motivation from time to time. So don't worry people - you are not the disgrace that your inner voice gossips about occasionally. What ever your intent or your motivation is with creativity - don't hesitate because of steps you dislike or won't take - enjoy your feelings and ideas that started a creationary piece. 👌🏻
great fakemon and great informational videos! i think the one passion that sticks out the most to me about you is storytelling. i think you’re very good at it and you’ve shown me how important it is to give each piece of art its story no matter how little or grand!
These are great Jack! The middle stages especially are amazing. Literally some of the best middle stages I've seen official or fake. I especially love Snipster. Thanks for the great content as always!
The final evolution of the little crustacean is so awesome... I can visualize it in 3d and in a pokemon game. Definetly hits the "this pokemon rocks" part of my brain
Really love Tomlock, absolutely love the double barrel crest and inverted tail creating the ammo belt! This video really does make me to flex the art muscles again
I don’t even draw but a lot of these tips apply to a lot of forms of art, I like to crochet and I found knowledge in this that definitely applies! Thanks!
This video is really helpful. I've always had a couple of old fakemon on paper in the back of my mind, but I never touched them again cause I couldn't get good concepts and I always felt I couldn't make it work on paper. This video really helped me see what I could do to bring those concepts back!
Please can you make a video where you talk about all the changes you did to the pokemons, from their first iteration to the last? I love to see the process and how the vision of a project or design can change as time goes by. Love your content, I've learned so much from you
The final state of the fire type starter is really cool. I really don’t like any of the official newer starters (the last good looking ones I really like were in Gen 4) and wouldn’t have them in my final team. But if that fire turkey was a real mon than he would be in my champ team for sure.
I think- even without the context of it being a pokemon guide, for just general art too- I need to rewatch more and listen. You have a lot of very to-heart things you've said in this and I need more of that in my life right now. If I end up designing a pokemon- I'll be sure to @ on twitter even. I'll rewatch this again a few more times too.
I like how a lot of the advice you presented here can be used for art in general and not just for making fakemon / pokemon designs. Also the designs you showed in the video are great! I do feel like Bleatdown's scale is a bit too similar to kidkickoff, even though their silhouettes and overall shapes are considerably different.
I couldn't help but chuckle when you called yourself a /Jack/ of all trades. I love Chillbilly, it just looks so big and lovable. Also, thanks for the character design advice, it's really thoughtful.
I don't know why. I don't know how, but this video almost made me cry. I think it took me back to good memories, thanks for helping me and many other to ignite our passion for art
I'd def be using one of these in the fictional game in my head. Way to go Jack! I imagine bringing these out fighting Ash or the Champion of the region!
Didn’t think I like a turkey Pokémon so much but I’m pleasantly surprised and now realizing if this region was real the only fire starters I’ve ever chosen are both birds . . . whatever opinion is subjective 😉
As a fellow New England-er myself, I had wanted to try and conceptualize a fakemon region based on it for a bit! This video is giving me a lot of inspiration to help me see what I can do to pay homage to both the franchise and place I love so! Can't wait to see any further takes you have as well!
I love shrimple's 2nd form!!!!! Usually those are the ugly duckling forms but they look so cute!!! Im picking them for sure!! This is a great tutorial! Ive been wanting to create fakemon since i started watching your videos. It just looks so fun! Your creature designs are my art goals. I need to practice more to get to this level. It's hard to figure out how to start and i also struggle with those "what are my passions" thoughts so this video is much appreciated!!
Of course it’s the best crabmon I’ve ever seen by the official crustacean lover. Deeply inspired. Surprised this wasn’t already a grope but I feel like I’ve learned so much over the years already, just watching your content. Taking in those unique tastes, conventions, and tips when you approached designs. I align with it heavily.

I've been watching for years now and you've been a huge inspiration to me and a driving force in why I started my own channel. Thank you for all the fun, comforting content! 🥳
Chillbilly isnt a freakishly muscular humanoid start *nooo!!!!!!!*
In all seriousness, I love both this video and its designs!
Thank you sincerely from a very enthusiastic Maine artist!!!!!
man, I love so much the design of meracostra. his details hit me on personal level.
Thankyou Jack
It doesn't hurt that the designs themselves are incredible too!
Most people fail to achieve the vibe of true pokemon designs because they start with the first form and then try to add things, making it feel more tacked on instead of having a unique identity.

these starters are funny AND THEY ARE SOOOO HYPEEEE
Wonderful video - I love everything about the crabs head, the shotgun turkey is incredible. Ordered the figure too, thank you for everything!
You are the guy that made me appreciate all fakemon content. I didn't really know it existed before you. You are great and so are your drawings. Keep up with your amazing content!
I love the final evo of the fire-bird starter.... its so cool and its silhouette is awesome, especially the big belt looking pieces coming off it
thanks this has really helped with me making my personal pokemon region
i enjoy the prideful and proud promotion of the gastronaut figure, very fun
You're REALLY good at what you do
I LOVE TOMLOCK! holy cow what a cool design!
I love all these designs, but especially the Fire starter, Tomlock's colours and vibe are just so cool.
Shirmple's final evolution is chefs kiss! I want that in my pokemon line up
I’ve been making fakemon for a long time now and I’ve always seen you as a great inspiration I’m glad that you made this video for me to help Improve not only my art but also my motivation to finally work on only one region and stick to it as i have made so many failed regions and i hope to put my newest one on UA-cam soon also gobshots line is my favorite
I am a fakemon artist myself but this helped me really get that good sugimori style. Thanks.
Decided to actually take notes and this whole video was filled with so much amazing advice. Not just for drawing Fakemon, but general character design tips as well. Thank you so much for this! Also, Tomlock looks SO sick!
I LOVE THE SHRIMPLE LINE!!!
Tomlock is a dinosaur mix with a gun. That is so awesome
i love snipster.
i like the look of the concept sketches of its final evo more than what you went with, but in keeping with its theme, i can see why what you went with tells a more satisfying story.
Thank you for the wise message at the beginning 👍🏻
I'm currently trying to get into many creative hobbies which I could end up liking.
Bleatdown is a fantastic name
great fakemon and great informational videos! i think the one passion that sticks out the most to me about you is storytelling. i think you’re very good at it and you’ve shown me how important it is to give each piece of art its story no matter how little or grand!
Nice touch with the Tuliyollal theme. Can't wait for the next Fakemon video.
I found this video immediately in my feed after i drew a pokemon that looked like something a 6 year old would draw. thank you.
I don’t even draw but a lot of these tips apply to a lot of forms of art, I like to crochet and I found knowledge in this that definitely applies! Thanks!
I GOOGLED HOW TO DRAW FAKEMON LITERALLY YESTERDAY HOW DID YOU KNOW?????
Jack knows all
he is the man behind everything
This video is really helpful. I've always had a couple of old fakemon on paper in the back of my mind, but I never touched them again cause I couldn't get good concepts and I always felt I couldn't make it work on paper. This video really helped me see what I could do to bring those concepts back!
Another great video!
I love Tomlock, it has a lot of features I find cool in birds, and it's just so satisfying to look at.
Thank you for posting this video!
It massively improved my drawing process and my work is already looking way better!
Please can you make a video where you talk about all the changes you did to the pokemons, from their first iteration to the last? I love to see the process and how the vision of a project or design can change as time goes by.
Love your content, I've learned so much from you
ooh I have never in real Pokémon even considered choosing the fire starter but I love the one you have made it looks so epic
Tomlock is defiantly my favorite. Its a fire turkey with a shotgun for a face. Whats not to love?
How lucky am i to see a new subjectively video aobut pokémon the day before my birthday? Btw fantastic video as usual jack.
Tomlock and Meracostra could exist today and become amongst my 15 top favorite Pokemon. Your designs are splendid.
I love snipster so much 😭 he’s just a moody lil teen that needs to be told he’s loved ❤️❤️❤️
I recently grabbed the gastronaut figure Im usually a grass type guy with the occasional water type but for some reason I really like Tomlock 😅
As a fellow New England-er myself, I had wanted to try and conceptualize a fakemon region based on it for a bit! This video is giving me a lot of inspiration to help me see what I can do to pay homage to both the franchise and place I love so! Can't wait to see any further takes you have as well!
I didn’t know I needed a flamboyant lobster, but now I know that I indeed do need a flamboyant lobster
