Trevor..some good points about village life..just add a few more: the village shuts down at 9pm or thereabouts and will start up again at 5am with Thai music coming through the village loud speaker system..not very loud but its there! ..and of course cockerels giving you an early alarm call..
It is so completely different to the tourist areas so be prepared and make sure you have a decent phone with access to plenty of data to help relieve the boredom..
Most of all embrace it and you never know you might like it..🤠
absolutely love this mate and yes spot on on all accounts
Good to see how the Thai people really live instead of Bangkok Pattaya etc.
Been in Isaan for 16 years. Love it.
Plenty of action up here if you can speak the language.
Go to Pattaya 4 or so times a year for my holidays.
totally agree mate, nice one
It always brings a smile to my face when I think about the 3 main points of the body in Thailand, the head being the high point, the feet being the low point and the part in the middle that gets you into trouble.
hahaha spot on
Everything trevor said is valid .If you get the chance to go to a village in thailand then take it it is well worth the experience. HOWEVER there are some things that you need to keep in mind firstly there will be no creature comports like a soft bed or aircon also there is often a chorus of dog barking and rooster crowing in the middle of the night .If your bum cant take sitting on the hard floor or concrete seat then make sure you tell people you cant do it .Finally make sure you dont stay longer than you can handle (five to ten days is usually enough) and have an exit strategy in case you need to leave otherwise you will be trapped .keep an open mind at all times and good luck.
Great comment mate thank you
Good video, Trev! The advice around the squat toilet is invaluable! Been trapped by them a few times! It is a skill to master. Get undressed, use the water bowl liberally....and always ALWAYS, carry some sturdy tissue to dry yourself with after. I have a zip-lock bag with dried out baby-wipes in my pocket at all times. Invaluable!
Cheers mate
Mattress on the floor luxury. I’m near Kalasin in a little village. Love it. Have splashed out some dosh. Have bed, proper toilet, and AC now. Have no desire to to live in Pattaya, Hua Hin. Can not believe how I have settled in. Just been thru the rice harvest, fascinating. Go out getting crickets and mushrooms with the misses. Every body says hello in the village, invite you in for beer or food. People come in and the misses gives them my cold beers to take away, that was hard to start with, but I’m used to it now. Just make sure I buy extra on our trip to lotus. Bhat 631 for a box of 12 large bottles. They are going to take me out on one of those fishing contraptions in the middle of the lake. Love it
Nice one my friend I know your area well I used to live that way
Thanks Trev, a fantastic vlog and extremely informative. I hope the pool arm is still working. 😊.
cheers mate and yeah all good mate
In a village called chumsaeng...here for 7 weeks...done it for 23 years...love it..
Fantastic
some craic Trev, ended up the mountains in Laos, met here in wonderful bar, 4 hrs she said, nearly a day later we arrived in the village in the middle of the night, brilliant once i got there (got used to the small scoop in the toilet 🤣for washing your arse)but reliant on her brother to drive and get drink, given the only bed in the village, I was the first farang many had seen, they kept coming over to touch my face, lovely people 👍👍
Nice one make that sounds fantastic
All the changes not much problem but the bucket shower in the mornings sure wakes you up.
Nothing like a fresh wake up call LOL
Lol so true trev remember my first time in the village went to have a shower yeld out shower no working she said welcome to Thailand put a cold bucket over head 😂
Hahaha ouch
Love it out in the country
Lived in phanom phrai out near yasathon/roi et for 3 years , so peaceful
So nice mate fair one
I would think - if they have electricity - one could buy an air mattress (blow up air bed) and use it while you are there - and possibly leave it as a gift or storage for your next trip. Air mattresses are WAY more comfortable than a hard floor.
yeah I get ya mate
Yet another great video Trevor! 'matress' in Korat is an experience for sure!, the thickness of a fag paperI loved the village life, getting up at 5am to give food to the monks, cleaning the grounds of the temple. The welcoming was unforgettable. A novelty for the villagers but I was fed a feast every day from everyone. We were together 6 years and I still go back to visit most times I go back to Thailand to see the family. Only just visited Pattaya recently after travelling Thailand for 6 years and only coming back because of the Buzzin Lounge and all you guys. See you for the new year and thanks for the hospitality.
Hahah brilliant mate thank you
Brilliant video Trev, you nailed everything as it is. I personally love it in the village, Pattaya is only a visit for a couple of days at the start and end of vacation days. Some of the stuff you talked about brought back memories for sure.😂😂😂😂
Thank you very much mate
I had my first experience in April, i was lucky enough to be taken to her village in Prakon chai - buriram. In my top 3 best experiences in my life, we partied into the early hours the first day I arrived 🎉. Can't wait to go back again next year!
Thanks for sharing mate, glad you enjoyed it
Beung Kan what an eye opener although quiet enjoyable boredom was never an issue but I'd never be able to cop it long term.
Nice one mate
HI Trev this subject is so important for people to know, i met my Thai wife in1998 in Bangkok, she came from a village about an hour outside the city and as we were going to get wed in the village so we went there about a week before the big day, and to say that i was shocked is an understatement they were living in what i would describe as a double garage with a toilet in the corner and bed rolls scattered all around. I had already explained to her that because of back problems i couldn't sit or sleep on the floor she laughed and said thats ok i have bought something for you, so when we were all ready to eat they got out this huge blow up arm chair for me to sit in so we all started eat and this bloody great chair started hissing and making farting noises and after few minutes i was listing to one side nearly falling out to everyone's amusement, everybody had a great laugh and it certainly broke the ice.
After that i had to be firm and book a hotel for the nights and went back to the village in the days, but i was made very welcome and despite only having a couple of words in Thai the guys used to take me out fishing and hunting and we had a good laugh, i still remember it with fond memories and glad i had that experience.
Wow mate thanks for sharing your experience with us
Yes, they gave me a blow-up mattress once and it literally did blow up in the middle of the night and threw me about two feet in the air.
Yes, you are absolutely right.my wife is from Hong Kong, met by chance now together 25 years. I was already interested in different cultures and people but first time I was introduced to her family it’s not easy! I don’t like crowds, I m an introvert and having dinner with 20 Chinese people all talking at 100 words a second! There will be problems.
25 years, brilliant mate
I insist we stay at a hotel when we visit. I hated camping back in the UK. Outside toilet, no chairs and sleeping on the floor is not for me. But the people are great. I always feel very welcome even though we can't communicate. I love the village but not for too long. I need my creature comforts. They have bought a plastic chair just for me.
It's all part of the experience
@Buzzinpattaya I know and I wouldn't swap it for the world
Thank you for sharing!!!
You are so welcome!
Another very informative piece to camera Trev 👏 Thank you.
I’m presuming that walking around the village ‘bare chested’ I.E. without a shirt, is a definite ‘no-no’?
This is not something I personally do myself in Patts, and personally I hate to see it, but I know some fareng likely lads 💪walk around bare chested in Pattaya.
absolute no no mate
@@Buzzinpattaya Personally, I hate to see it in the Pattaya streets and bars. I find it disrespectful… And not just because I’m an over-weight 57 year old with ‘Moobs!’ 555
I live in a village in Isaan between Koen Kaen and Udonthani and farm 60 rai for fun.
I used to like driving fast cars and motor bikes. That has changed to tractors and implements.
Pattaya lifestyle is not for me.
Very nice
Excellent,I did it for 10 years an have many fond memories.I've been gone now for 14 years an would live to go back an see all the people I knew.I live in a village called Popi near Phan not far from ChiangRai.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience I hope you get back
I like the Village life, I visit Fang in the Chiang Mai Province, Thai people are so friendly, and they look after you, but you are right, you are the center of attention. and most times you are the only westerner in the room. But the food is always the highlight for me.
Nice one mate as ya said village life is the best
Hey Trev, been in the village for 2 months now and coming down next week to see ya, please make sure the beers are cold😊
Beers are always cold mate
I've seen village life in other countries (Fiji mainly on one of the smaller non-tourist islands) -- I think there would be some parallels, save for the language. It's great to experience, especially when you are among a lot of smiling friendly locals. I remember an earlier video of yours up in the countryside too -- thanks for sharing these aspects and the differences!
Thanks for sharing!
Nearly made it to the weekend 👍 .......just a podium run first 🏃♂️ 😃
Onya Ian mate 👍🏼🍻🇦🇺🏏
Have a good weekend, S 👍
BOSH! Have a great day mate
I like your shows. I get a lot of good information from you, real truth. So I make it a point to come see you. The Buzzin lounge is alright
Thank you kindly
Thanks for good advice 😊
You're welcome 😊
Great tips thank you
You are so welcome!
I've not been to the countryside in Thailand but I visited rural life in the Philippines visiting my in-laws there many times in the past.
Nice one mate
Overall I loved the village, when we went….no real shock to my lifestyle… so relaxing…
Glad you enjoyed it
Evey day is a blessing so embrace Evey thing life puts to us through
Well said
Great pictures of DanKwain. Hopefully can all go out to dinner sometime
Sounds good to me
I have been doing the village life thing for over 25 years now. I also love it! We got a house there. In fact, I think we are nearby - our house is in Nong Bon, just up around the curve in the road over there by Dan Kwain. Love the shots in Korat - makes me miss home (Nong Bon). I’m over in South Korea for work but will be back out to Korat mid-December through the new year.
Love the show Trev! Also great to see you living nearby when you come up from Pattaya. 👍
Haha brilliant mate, I know where you are, nice area. I'm back over New Year
@ fantastic! Hopefully i can run into you at terminal 21 or what not. thanks again for the hugely entertaining and informative channel!
I like this type of video.
Thank you
I got lucky, I live in a small village luckily my wife was from Chonburi. Before I could afford to build a house I lived with the family. 12 people one farang and one toilet. It was great though. Always something going on. Built the house now but sometimes miss those days. I was only 32, it was an adventure.
Thanks for sharing
So true , I love village life it’s no frills .
Very informative vid and also comments but I think I'll stay in Chang Mae after watching. Cheers.
No worries mate
I stayed in a village just outside of Kon Kaen. 1 small village shop. My partner’s family had a huge beautiful house. Air conditioning etc. Had my own double bed. It was an outside shower which was a downside. I paid for the shopping etc, and took my GF out for meals etc. At the end of the 3 days the family asked for 5,000 Baht which was really disappointing. I just give them it. Apart from that I enjoyed myself.
Sounds like a good way to have a tip top time.
@ 😂😂
Nice one mate thank you very much for sharing your experience I'm glad you had a good time
My first experience was 2 months ago in Yang Talat, which is in Kalasin. I wasn’t expecting what I found, but on reflection it was just a very downgraded version of the way many of my friends live in rural Northern Australia, and indeed many of the Aboriginal settlements.
I was initially struck by the number of dogs and amount of mud leading up to the ‘house’. Effectively it was an open space with 2 concrete structures that contained 2 rooms each either side. Outside mother and fathers’ room they just sat on a straw mat, probably because father was paralysed down 1 side. There were then 2 raised bamboo platforms covered in the straw mats, which doubled, or tripled or whatever as the seating area, dining area, meal prep area and entertainment area.
Where I lived in Northern Australia we did spend 4 or 5 months living outside with the perfect weather, daytime temperatures being 28-32 and night time dropping down to maybe 18 or 19. There would be comfy seats, TV, entertainment unit, dining table, a pool/spa and a lot of fridges and fans. All this would be under a covered patio or under a raised house. Many still lived outdoors in the wet season and build up. In the rural area it was all on a larger scale and the outdoor area was often separate from the main living accommodation. The main difference was chairs, overhead fans (covered structure), toilets and airconditioned living rooms and bedrooms as an option.
What struck me about Yang Talat, and I went to her parents house and cousin’s house, was the extended family, actually I wasn’t sure who was family and who was friends of family. Random people would just turn up at meal time, however I never felt uncomfortable.
Chang is consumed in ridiculous quantities. The standard purchase is as many 630mL bottles that you van carry along with a few bags of very cheap ice. Because the usually sole fridge is used for food, probably, the beer ends up in a cooler and the beer is drunk in glasses with ice.
I ate all sorts of stuff up there including cicadas, good I used to hate the little bastards at home making a racket, and these tiny river prawns that were still alive.
The only hotel was a long way away, and was in fact a short-time place used by the locals who couldn’t take their new friend home, or preferred to do the business on an actual bed with aircon.
As Trevor said, there is no transport. Her cousin and his wife drove us everywhere. The roads were remarkably good, which is an advantage when everyone driving is probably drunk.
I wouldn’t rush back, but I have no problem going back again.
Nice one mate
Great understanding of all the information about Thai lifestyle in the village especially. If you don't have a full driving licence for a car what are the other options available? I really enjoy watching your UA-cam videos Trevor 👍 😊.
I'll have to be honest and say to you in all the years of being up in the village I've never ever once been stopped and asked for a driving license
@Buzzinpattaya how about in the city of pattaya?
Great video Trev, hey when is that pool tournament between the Buzzin lounge and the other bar from a few weeks back?
Gonna sort in a couple weeks as am away next week mate to Cambodia
Good video. It was a shock the 1st time for me. But just go with it, and it's great .though I did have to buy them a flushing toilet 😢
Haha toilet is essential lol
My first visit was likeone big party for the locals about 20 people there 2 speak English 😅me and gf never forget a big storm came in as did about million bugs they then shut the doors mum sweeps then up. No knowing that was lunch next day😂 well it was for them.
Hahaha brilliant mate
Good video thanks. I'm currently seeing a lovely lady in Pattaya and hope to continue the relationship when I relocate to Thailand early next year. Her family lives in the outskirts of Buriram, and she wants to take me there next year for a visit. It will definitely be an 'adventure' as they really live in a remote region, nearest grocery store is 20km away, no 7-11, no restaurants, no nothing in immediate area heh heh heh. I think the main population area of Buriram is 60km away so renting a car seems a must for the visit.
Nice one mate
Village living for a farang.is beautiful & slower life style.but the novelty will wear out eventually in issan.little english with local thais.heat is more intense in issan .I lived outside in kallasin for 6 months in my gf village.great experience.& kind people.but after 6 months timed to move for us.back to more friendly farang entities for me.keep it rollin
Ive lived in a rural village for 7 years now, absolutely love it
Just because the novelty wore off for you doesn't mean it will for everyone

hi trev ..i whould like to try going to a village for say 3days...but as you addvised i do some checks .frist ..have a great day mate
Thanks, you too!
Love spending time in villages never know what you can find in them.
so true mate
Back in 2000, I was in Thailand with the Thai GF that lived in the states for 40 years. We visited where she grew up in Sakon Nakhon and it is pretty much just like you described it. Except back then, I don't remember seeing the bum guns even in Bangkok. I think that is new since then. But getting use to the toilet was probably the biggest thing. It looked like the picture you showed, but they had wood floors with lots of holes. But the toilet is pretty much just a porcelain riser with platforms and it is right next to shower so it might be wet. So you have to imagine a fat boy trying to balance on wet porcelain, trying not to slip and fall off while doing your business. And then they have a 55 gallon drum of water with a pot that you dip and poor to flush with. The road side rest stops in the area were worse as they had a communal men's room with a bunch of those lined up, no walls between them, with a trough of running water to dip from. Water from the trough over flowing on the floor. Her family thought I was crazy because I would just take a bite out of their peppers with no food.
Cheers for sharing mate
The countryside is a lot more than change. 16 years in with my Thai wife. My question is why would you want to live in a place where you are as out of place as any place on earth where you can’t communicate with anyone out in the middle of nowhere? Everybody will be hitting you up for something. That’s the reality of it. These UA-cam vids always try to give you an idealized version of it. It’s not the actual day to day. Believe me. I’ve done it. No I’ll take Hua Hin.
I communicate fine, I hardly ever get hit up to pay for anything, I have lived up in this environment for years, it's like anything, it's what you make it!
16 years and never learnt Thai, you get out of life what you put in
Right on
Right on
✌I was in Nakhon Phanom, Sakhon Nakhon, Bueng Kan and villages in that area for 3 weeks (Mekong river basin) before coming to Pattaya. Zero tourists or foreigners. Wonderful. Of course I am used to a similar society in my country, not much of a culture shock.

Each to their own, but even a weekend in the sticks is too long for me now 😒

5 days is my record in Chiayaphum .
Trev, there is another social rule even you not might be aware of, in case there is a monk in the family. The first 10 years i am with my wife, my father in law was still a monk; as he stayed in a Wat nearby, he often came to our house during daytime; we have a western style house; so only chairs and sofas, no sitting on the floor; when i sit i used to cross my legs; this also is a NoNo for a monk.
yeah I have two family members in the Temple as we speak
I lasted one year in udon then fled back too phuket
20 something years ago
I would rather be in prison
Than live in issan
wow that's shame mate, personally I love village life

Have you done a full year yet

Hey Trev. You look great. Village life as long you have AC, clean water, and an inside toilet. If not forget it you might end up tits up. LOL
haha cheers mate and yeah love village life
I’d try village life or certainly a quieter city for sure to live. Bangkok is mad traffic and too noisy .. I loved visiting K Kaen & Ubon areas . The more peaceful days were great & the friendly people of course .. I guess it is horses for courses , but if you ‘find the one’ I’d try it , be good if not too remote or a too Spartan existence..driving a car 🚗 would be a better experience too , adjusting I guess is key
People are people , village or city just different kinds of problems . You think it’s peaceful until you know the language. LOL. If it seem to good to be true it usually is.
I really hope you do switch off a bit in the village Trevor as you are always so full on 🙏
Cheers mate, I try
The areas described was the Issan region, not the other rural areas in the other regions, they are different.
Am lost what you are saying, I live in Issan
@Buzzinpattaya the rural areas of Southern Thailand are different for example. If you watch your video you will notice there is an assumption that countryside/rural/up country was a reference the to Issan region.
@@kal77uk Well I went up to a village near Phichet in the North which is not Isaan, and village life was a lot worse than Udon Thani.
Hi Trevor that infos are very dandy for me sleeping in the floor i did that many times when i met my wife years ago she live on a farm and her Parents were old style but i was use to this because my mother was raise on a big farm so it was no strange to me the only thing i will be worry about the food because me Trev i'm diabetes it's well control but even here in Chateauguay when i eat some food i have diarrhea and water i'm very fragile even when i was going to see her family it was a small village about 6hours from Chateauguay and they were 3000 population so the water i was not able to drink them like my wife they were use to this but me no so the only thing i will be very worried it's the food so for me i really will check very seriously about the village bring my water and medication to be ok thanks for sharing much appreciated have a excellent day Trev and take care and stay safe my friend sawatdeekhrap kopkounmakkrap

I got nothing just went..boots do most jabs
If ya worried mate speak to ya local doctor
None - it's not like going to the Congo
Fill a form with your gp
If you not a country boy from your home you prob won't like the country anywhere in the world. We travel between Mueang Udon Thani have house there and condo in Pattaya.
nice one mate
Don't remember Trev, if you mentioned the flies and mosquitos, but that's one of the reasons the locals wear cloths wrapped around their head and face. And one of the worst bothers to deal with is the drunk guy who cuddles up to you mumbling 'I lub U' and worse the local MILFs smashed on LaoKao who have no shame or manners.
Upcountry is an educational experience, a survival adventure, a leaning opportunity, a jaded view of what real country life is like, and if you keep your eyes open enough you will likely see some of the not so nice people and ways. Some villages are better than others, but better is a relative condition.
Have fun
Drunk villagers are always a testing time lol
Hotels can be very nice but check out the beds!! Rock hard mattresses are the norm! It's just like sleeping on the floor! My biggest disappointment in travelling around Thailand.
Had that myself on occasion mate
I always take a camp mattress with me as I'm sick of arguing and being looked at with a blank face .
Excellent vid , people forget they are in another country...be responsible for your actions
At least you only have to spend around three weeks a year up there .
I love it up in the village
Living in a rural village is a nightmare, even if you speak thai not sure what conversation you get out of guys that sit in hammocks drinking eating every hour mothers leaving there kids so Grandma takes care of them you live in a pensioner child careing environment never been so bored i would rather work
I am sorry mate but I have to totally disagree with you I have a great time when I'm in the village and we talk about all kinds of things
You are right, you will have zero meaningful conversation with them, I found one who vaguely knew who Hitler was once, but that was the closest to a chat about history I ever had up there.
@@Buzzinpattaya I believe Trev you have your wife who lives there and you have children, your Daly life is working in Pattaya and your you tube your not full time in the village you live 2 seperate lives , the village for you is your family life totally different from ferang living in a village with a girlfriend or wife when retired, you have the ideal life there are very few in your situation, I was referring to the normal retired person who doesn't work in Thailand
Could have been my comment. Have nothing in common with them except for the love of booze.

no mate lol
Even in Pattaya all you get on TV is the news in most languages, some old movies in English and free to air sports, kickboxing, football, golf. Good to keep up to date, but don't expect Corrie or Eastenders.

Or bicycling.

Good for a few days
I love it
Sit on floor & sleep on floor 😅

"Language and Communication", was missed in this video. none of the villagers or family speak English, anything you want to ask for or talk, will be with your girlfriend's broken English as an intermediary . Be prepared, it will be stressful. Unless you speak a bit of Thai or heavily rely on Google translate.
I speak Thai so I have no problem communicating
@@Buzzinpattaya Having a 200 word vocabulary with no comprehension of the tones does not mean you speak Thai Trev
Just remember, there will only be ONE reason they'll want you in the village..and that reason is to benefit from your money. This applies to ALL farang, including our intrepid Trev!
Mate am sorry but for me you are wrong. I pay for nothing other than my wife, I am never asked for money from any of her family.
Absolutely wrong.
@thaicycle5249 Let me guess..your lady is different and would be with you in her village even if you had no money..her mama would probably bung you a few hundred baht per day too!
If you have been married for 20 years and your wife is from a decent but poor family your statement is wrong. If you're the typical Pattaya bar rat going up there with a hardened pole dancer you've been sponsoring for the last 6 months, yeah your statement is correct.
@@Nigel-ef2ftsame applies to farang wife, she will bung someone else if you are broke 😅

As to the negative comments about farang being ATM. , from day one I played the poor card. Don't make the mistake of big noting as the stories of farang who drops 100,000 per day are rife. Its easy to fall into the trap of feeling like a philanthropist but it will only bring you grief. Also carry a stick, number one , village dogs know what a stick is for 😮
Well said
The last thing the villagers want is a poor farang up there, the girl's family would lose face big time. There's a way not to come across as a mug, whilst preserving most of your hard-earned, you don't have to feign poverty.
