I bought and carried off duty the model 19 with the 2 1/2 barrel - Back in the day. (1968 ) arguably the finest made. The trigger pull was pure silk. I still own this revolver after all these years.

Went to a local gun show yesterday in search of a particular type of AK47 when I saw a mint, and I do mean " mint ", model 19-4 with original box on a guy's table. It was getting a lot of attention from the moment I walked in. It's such an iconic revolver. I could not get my mind off of it. It didn't even have any drag marks on the cylinder. I circled the guys table four different times and said screw the AK, that model 19 will be mine. It is the most beautiful hand gun in my collection. It's too pretty to shoot, but I'm still going to give it a workout at the gun range today. So glad I didn't pass on this piece of history.

Since you favor this revolver, you might want to pick up a copy of "No Second Place Winner" written by Bill Jordan who championed this revolver and the model 66 (stainless version). He was a border patrolman for 30 years and a former Marine Colonel who served in World War 2 and Korea War. (1911-1997) Jordan led an extraordinary life Bill convinced Smith & Wesson to bring out the 357. Magnum in the "K" frame, and the result is what you have in your hand. Later the "Jordan Holster" was designed for this revolver based again on input by Bill and later the Jordan combat grip, completing the journey of this revolver into the legendary Smith & Wesson Combat Magnum. With his rig complete Bill Jordan was recorded drawing, firing and hitting target in .27 of a second. There is more history in that revolver then you might imagine.

Congratulations on your beautiful Model 19! I feel I must add a word for your consideration. A lot of hot loads may be hard on your K frame. You can possibly develop some end shake. Notice how thin the steel is at the cylinder bolt cutout. Remember Smith & Wesson doesn't produce recessed cylinders any more. If you bulge that thin part, let's just say your day will be ruined. Let me tell you something that happened to me. At a gun show A few years ago I found a gorgeous 6 1/2" Model 29, Coke bottle diamond stocks, Not mint but very nice. Original wood box with inserts and cleaning accessories. I always shoot (through my Smiths) an intermediate handload that is way below maximum. Well a previous owner shot something very hot, because when I tried to extract the brass, it didn't. I had to drive each case out with a wooden dowel. Each case was ballooned out where it sat at the cylinder bolt recess. My day was ruined! I called all over and was told "They don't make 'em like that anymore, sorry". My story has a happy ending though, as I was blessed to find a recessed cylinder one day on E-Bay. It took a lot of looking. It fit just fine (I had to purchase the extractor rod from the seller too as the new one was left hand thread). Now I'm happy! Sorry about the long story, but remember, beauties like this will probably never be made again. The craftsmen who built these have probably long since passed on. The next generation will appreciate the care we give these gems. Cheers!

Great video. I still have/carry my S&W model 19 nickel 4" which used to be my service revolver when I was a police officer.
I purchased it new in March 1981. Still have the original grips on it. It shoots like a dream. The best handgun of all time...in my opinion. Tried and true. It will definitely work 6 times without a glitch. Thanks for sharing!

I have a 19-4 from about 1978. It is pinned and recessed like your 19-3.
Mine is a 4" barreled gun like yours is. I have a set of smooth target grips on it, and it is drop dead gorgeous.
I love your revolver too. I would not refinish that gun. It is excellent the way it is.
The model 19 is as good as any Python.

Richard Degen my dad got a mid 1950’s model 10 at a gun show for $500, when he told me I’m thinking “man that’s a lot to pay for 60 yr old beat up 38...when I finally visted him and saw it, the thing was immaculate! It looked brand new like it had never been fired!?! It was a 4” the blueing was perfect the original grips had minimal wear and it shot like a dream the action was so smooth. He asked if $500 was too much I said “shit that gun is worth hundreds more imo!” 😳

I got one like yours but -5, shot it yesterday with only .38 special white box, at the range and it is super smooth. In single action, it is soooooooo accurate. It felt like a cloud so soft on the recoil, I also took my old centenial, 38 model 42 snub, and it kicked like a little mule, on the J-frame. Good gun you have there a keeper for sure.

I fitted Pachmayr rubber grips to my (6 inch barrel) model 19 and it made it a lot more comfortable to fire. I used .357 mag handloads with jacketed soft point bullets and could get better groups with it than either my 9mm Browning Hi Power or my .22 revolver. Definitely my favorite handgun, although my main interest was long range rifle shooting. Don't shoot any more now, but I used to enjoy the sport.

Designed to be a service revolver with identical internals as the model 27, but a bit less fancy (less expensive). I love my model 27 and 28 for all the same reasons you stated. Beautiful guns, and in very good cond., I enjoy them immensely. That model 19 is a beaut!

I have a SW 19-3 very similar to yours. It's barrel measures approx. 3 1/2 inches from the receiver to the end of the barrel. I don't know whether to call it a 3 in. or a 4 in. If I include the forcing cone in the measurement I guess it would be called a 4 in. barrel, am I right or wrong?

My favorite revolvers are my 2.5" & 4" Model 19's! My 2.5" goes to the range quite a bit and like you say the trigger pull on these is phenomenal! Back in the early 80's I was young and didn't have much money so at first I bought the 19's initially because they were cheaper than the Pythons. Out in the field the mod 19 really impressed me. I now own several Pythons and I do like them but to tell you the truth I prefer my Model 19 to shoot!

The Model 19 is one of the best ever in 357. However, the Colt Python is the king of cool in my opinion, price not being a factor.
    My ranking:
    1 Colt Python
    2 S&W model 27
    3 S&W model 19
    4 Colt Lawman Mk III
    Great video!

Smith and Wesson revolvers have always been my favorites. There isn't a revolver other than Colt that compares to them. Now I wouldn't say a Model 19 compares to a Python. But the 19 has been one of the best choices you could get. If you know the history of the gun, you know it was made to practice with 38's and carried with 357's. Plus look up Bill Jordan, he was the father of the 19. Anyway my favorite revolver is the Smith and Wesson model 27 series. I like the bigger 357, I own a 627 Hunter (5" full lug barrel) and a Performance Center 627 with the ported removable brake. Both are excellent guns, a bit different because of the different decades they came out.

I'm going to get a Model 19 when I find one exactly like I want, a nickel finished snub with round butt walnut grips. I also plan to someday own a Python, but it'll have to be a blued snub with walnut grips. I'm very particular about any handgun I buy, and, yes, I know I have expensive tastes.

I have a 19-4 and it is one of my favorite guns to shoot. I also have the M28 which is pretty much the same as the M27 except for some visuals. They are both 6 shot guns. Smith and Wesson do make a new N frame (I believe it is called a TR8) that is a 8 shot revolver. The 686+ is an L frame that holds 7 rounds. I actually have a lot of .357 revolvers, including a Python.

Always loved revolvers. They're so much fun to shoot and your ammunition will last longer because you're only firing six rounds at a time. I used to have LOTS of S&W revolvers but now have only one left, an old model 586-1 that was made in the late 80's. I don't care for S&W's latest 'locking' design because they changed the overall design SO much that it isn't even the same revolver anymore. The new design is indeed a fantastic handgun but I prefer the older S&W design to the new.

The model 27 is a six-shot revolver. Most model 10s have a serrated trigger, but the trigger and hammer are narrow. Don't "adjust" the hammer spring screw. It is meant to be screwed all the way in.

  • @dtnetlurker

Nice gun. The 19 is nice. Everyone loves a nice smaller revolver, especially when they can't get their hands on a big bore. The 19 is still just the little guy on the block though. The Legend is the good ol Model 29 and the one everyone knows and wants. Nothing beats it for pure presence alone, and the stopping power is still the best you can get and still be able to control it. Not everyone can handle it, so they settle for the smaller ones. The smaller ones are more reliable than modern semiauto handguns though. I recommend them to new shooters that don't want to mess with the slightly more complicated modern semiauto pistols.

I too have long thought that the s&w model 19 was the best gun ever made. I've been carrying one daily since 1980. There is a gunsmith that I know a 4 " model 19 with over 600, 000 magnum rounds thru it and many more 38 special. It still shoots an 1 1/2 " group @ 25 yards using a Ransome Rest.

Sometimes the S&W round logo is on the left side of the frame (little size) and sometimes on the right side (bigger size) on these M19s. Why? Years of production? I have seen both variants on vintage ones. So it's not about modern and vintage production. So what does it depend on?

Just to let you know: dash three revolvers started in 1967. They also had the diamond grip till 1968 so that would put yours no earlier than '68 if those are original grips. I could of narrowed down yr of manufacturer but I couldn't quite read the first part of your serial number. You're right on the bluing I have a 19-2 made in the 1966 and the bluing is gorgeous. As good as my Python. This info is from The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson.

+dan4466 Yep I was just about to tell him the -3 is a bit newer, just picked up a -2 4 inch a few days ago but can't tell for sure but as far as I can tell, mine would be around 1962-1963 but can't get right down to the nitty gritty on it as far as the serial number run for those years, might just have to give smith the 50bucks and know for sure, mine did not have the original grips and I really kinda wish it did, but I am sure someone lost them quite a time ago, mine also had minor holster wear (may even have been a cop gun as many of them were back then), and just ever so slight bit of rust on the side of the trigger, but the gun still has that awesome looking deep bluing done with hand work care, and holy crap is it a freakin tack driver, combine that with the horsepower of the well proven 357mag and I can't see how anyone would think you to be under armed, my uncle had the gun and wanted my 3 inch sp101, even after I told him the smith was worth more any day than the ruger he still wanted to trade so ok hell yes, gotta love the older smith's and colt's, can't wait till the holster I ordered gets here so that awesome smith can go into my daily carry rotation.

Being a revolver person this would be my first choice of handgun. Like the John M. Browning designed Winchester Model '97 12 gauge "hammer" pump shotgun (1897-1957), and the .300 Savage Model 99 lever action rifle, the S&W Models 19 and 66 (K-Frame) and heavier .357 S&W (N-Frame) Models 27 and 28 Highway Patrolman, these are classic, venerable, and historical firearms. I laud and prefer them all! Finally, a Smith and Wesson Mod. 19-3 would indicate 1967-
1977 vintage. After 1957 Smith and Wesson changed the gas ring from yoke to cylinder, and beginning in 1982 deleted the pinned barrel and counter shrunk chambers in the magnum calibers: .357, .41, and .44 Magnum.

+Chevy 4x4 Yep the 686 is awesome too really, and the model 60 is very nice also, I own the model 60 pro series (actually 2 of them)3 inch barrel and just about the perfect weight and size in my book, just a suggestion you'd love 1 if you got it, everyone that has ever tried mine loved it and wanted it lol.

Yeah I’ve got a 3” 686+ that has the unfluted cylinder and fancy wood grips, it’s awesome, got it used and cheap after the S&W quality problems guys started trading them in. That’s why I think a lot of people want the old models 1950s-80s cause S&W had a short period where they had trouble with the locks, canted barrels etc etc. But the ones I’ve bought since 2016 have been great!👍🏻

Lol well ignoring the fact that your claim that a revolver is the best you can have for defensive use is objectively wrong, I too share your love for revolvers. Always have. And that’s a seriously gorgeous one you have right there too.

No semi is as reliable as a good revolver. As for home defense it's what I recommend. It's simple and one is less likely to have a negligent discharge.
