Ballistic Gel Shots

  • Ballistic gel (or gelatin) is a biomimetic material designed to simulate the material properties (density and viscosity) of human muscle tissue. The ballistics gel formulation is used as standardized media for testing things like ammunition, hand-held weapons, shrapnel, and others. For scientific reporting, generally folks formulate a gel that is standardized by the FBI, and this gel needs to be refrigerated and generally has a strong yellow/orange tint in color. In this example, we used clear ballistics gel purely to see how ammo penetrates, cavitates, and damages the gel.

Kind of amazing how that one bullet reached all the way to the end and had lost enough kinetic energy where the last part of it had enough surface tension to yank the bullet back into place

Actually, it didn't make it all the way through. Still, a decent chunk left that still held the bullet back. I don't know if gels have surface tension, but that is usually a liquid characteristic.

First shot vs second is a good example of why more power isnt always better. The most damage to the body is done not from the puncture but from the transfer of kinetic energy from the bullet to the target. If the bullet is too fast and just goes all the way through, it takes most of that energy with it, leaving just a hole and relatively minor damage. Same thing applies to stuff like anti tank rounds. You want them strong enough to go through the first wall of armor but ideally not out the second one, even better if they splinter inside the target.
