Lukas is one of the most free range vocalist in the industry. Truly impressive skills. Matriarch is one of my all time favorite metal albums. Banger after banger those guys are all super mega professionals, truly into their craft, putting on a show. Creating art. 🤙🏽
As with Spenser Sotelo and now Lukas, Chris shows us how these guys don't just do it without knowing anything at all. They KNOW what their doing to not hurt themselves. It's really an eye opener for me. Thanks, Chris. And Lukas. Oh, and Spenser.
@@chrisliepe I joined the warm-ups and watched them all today, I wasn't able to try them but I did have a question about the buzzer technique? By doing the buzzer is the feeling you get from it something you want to have all the time, or leaning into it rather while your singing different notes and things? Is this something you can turn on whenever you want sorta like Shawn Morgan or Kurt or Chris? If so this is what I'm really trying to learn the most, while also doing high notes like 90s stuff. Thanks man you always have new techniques I can barely keep up lol.
Lukas phenomenal vocalist! The way he can transition back and forth between the cleans and harsh vocals is mindblowing. Can't wait for new music from VOM! \m/
I took 6 lessons with Lukas and it completely changed how I sing and scream for the better, I'm no able to do things I never had before and in a healthy way. And I took those lessons after a music degree, in multiple choirs and bands, and learning from an individual with a Master degree in vocal performance and coaching, and another individual who was a grammy winning singer. Lukas is the shit.
I've been screaming for about 15 years, certainly the unsafe way, letting all out. I've watched several vids and techniques but never really got them. And here's the buzzard technique that totally made sense to me and gave instant results. No other technique worked for me. Kudos to Lukas!
I'm a voice actor, and screaming can really trash my voice. There are times I want to go for intensity, but I just end up losing all my air in a loud burst. These techniques will come in handy next time I have to do some sustained battle cries, or death yells.
The buzzer sound sounds like a high compressed larynx Tuvan throat-singing which is a synchronized vibration pattern on the false vocal cords and then he seemed to switch back on vocal cords distortion. Switching from false cords distortion to vocal cords distortion (or Kargyraa to fry-based screaming) is usually fairly easy because the level of compression in both is fairly the same. But it might be misleading if we don't proper address where the distortion is coming from. Which is why throat-singing is an amazing gateway to extreme voices but I have already said that in your video, right?
Lukas is such an amazing vocalist, when i first heard vom i somewhat assumed there were two separate vocalists. crazy how much range and technical ability he has
Thanks a ton for selflessly sharing your vocal placements or techniques. I really improved a ton in my singing (Improved in a sense that I can sing those higher pitches in the right the way and to sail along different resonances in a more comfortable way.
I think you might've accidentally dragged the audio file from 8:10 to 7:43 :D But this was a super helpful tutorial! I like the different kind of approach!
I feel a big course coming up with Lukas??? The one where Spencer Sotelo recorded Lukas is AWESOME and worth every dollar, seeing those 3 guys in Chris's Studio!!!! Very inspiring! But I would Love a course where it is more about Lukas his singing, because it seems like Lukas has a bit of a different approach than Spencer.... For now, looking forward to startwith the free warm-up course 😀 THANKS & Please Keep on Rocking Guys!!!
Wow, that third example at the end felt like a completely different placement than my normal compression with the buzzer sound. It felt like I was about to hock a loogie. It worked though when I added more pressure to try and hit a pitch! But I don't know if it felt safe..
Fuck he leaked the coveted buzzer sound, the key to soft pallet distortion. If you guys dont wanna enroll for lessons you basically belt through pure buzzer sound to get a fry scream. The belts gotta be powerful and you gotta have maximum twang, or it doesnt work.
The full course will be available next week!! :) Sign up for the free warmups course linked in the description of this video so you're sure to get an email about the big course! :)

Super awesome video thank you! I always look at your videos to find the best way to take care of the voice. Have you ever reviewed Shayley Bourget of Dayshell? He has a very unique sing/scream. They just released a single called, “letting go” where he does it in the “go”
So his singing sound is really forward and bright, i also found some other rock teachers saying to get really forward especially with singing high notes. My thing is i struggle with getting that manly chest voice and my song teacher says to open my throat and lower my larynx a little bit, making me sound very classical. It helps to find my chest voice, but i do struggle to understand how to get a forward placement like this, like is the the soft pallate dropping to create more nasal resonamce or something?
Love it...these deep dives into the finer details of singing. Do you have a video or general insights/thoughts on overall health/fitness on vocal performance/recovery/maintenance? I do covers gigs a couple/few/several times a week year round, solo and with bands at 3 hours at a time...usually back to back nights. Been heavily struggling with vocal maintenance and decline (and inflammation) and just keen to hear any wisdom on that front. I warm up religiously, am pretty damn mindful of what I eat and stay active, sing with IEM's, try to actively sing with decent technique and not strain/reach, but still cooked. Any thoughts/resources/recommendations/references are super appreciated. Love your stuff! Thanks man.
The buzzer sound feels like knives in my upper throat, but worked fine yesterday.. what can i be doing wrong to make that sound hurt? It seem to just happen sometimes, like suddenly some lower part of my throat activates and starts vibrating making it feel like sandpaper😅
Soon as I try the buzzer I get the irritated folds feeling - curious is that gritty sound by nature a compression effect? I don’t mean to over-technicalize it, just didn’t CLICK for me instantly.
i would love to see you digest a corpse husband song. love you work, helped me a lot with my screams and clean vocals. i've been doing vocals for 4 years and can easily tell the difference in my experience. changed my technique a few times and found my own that works perfectly and i dont hurt my vocal cords thanks to your pain free training
Veil's Mikasa and Outsider are the top played songs on Spotify for a reason - this singer can fucking rip. Really hoping the next album isn't super generic metalcore chugfest breakdown city without any variation and/or clean singing whatsoever like some recent releases have been. I mean cmon throw us a fuckin bone and let it rip again with a return to form (i.e. Mikasa)
Mr. Liepe, I have been successfully making most of these sounds for a year with what I am pretty sure is proper support. However, I still get a scratchy throat (sometimes coughing) when I make them. Because of this, I have been unable to progress. What can I do? I'm getting pretty discouraged
