Cardio cannot be understated in this video. When I was playing live in a metal band I would do 2 mile runs in the morning before shows that night. It gives you so much natural energy as well as helping you keep your breathing under control while being exhausted. Your breathing techniques will have a big impact on the quality of your voice.

i'm someone that just finds cardio to be such a chore, i'd rather lift than run for exercise, but there's no better way than jogging & running. Seeing how i plan on forming a band (hopefully several), and wanting to front one as lead vocalist, i figure i'll sing along to songs as i run on the treadmill, so i can work on breath support this way and not get winded quickly whenever i do perform
Edit: _Basically exactly what he said about vocalizing while doing cardio lol_

That's why I can sing so high: after working out in the gym I have better control and belt.

Wow, I always thought those performers were just… well, superhuman or something. But this teaches me that (like fitness) I could reach that level too by a down-to-earth training process, step by step and day by day.
Thanks for this eye opener, the tips and for the free course (love it!).

Hey chris could you talk about how to hear yourself when playing live or at a band practice. What kind of equipment a vocalist needs, how to match volume level with something like the drums, how to protect hearing aswell, maybe what each member of the band should be listen to. Like should everyone be able to hear the singer or should drums and bass just focus on eachother ect?

Fun tip for cardio. Don't do it outside. They literally sell these awesome devices that are just the pedals of a bike for like 50 bucks. They are made for sedentary office drones to put under their desks and exercise while they work. I'm not an office drone, but I got one because I'm lazy but also need to lose weight. After getting one, I realized it is possible to lose weight while simultaneously playing video games and smoking pot!!! Not only has this device helped me lose weight, I now have an excuse to smoke weed and play video games!!! If anything, because of this thing, I now play video games WAY more often than I did before.

ok so lmao.... I took the do it parts point to heart apparently. just recorded a rap verse and two sung verse I wrote on another song. IT JUST MAKES SO MUCH SENSE WHY HE DOES IT LIKE THAT. Guys I swear its better. like I had already recorded my sung vocals before but I wanted to work on em ya know? I like... did the first verse and then stopped, normally id let it just run into the next, but punching in like that forced me to find my favorite/the best way to get the lines out of me. New level achieved, thank you both so much man!

Amazing vid really really helped, can you do a video on singing non-chord tones, when I'm playing the guitar I tend to fall on the notes that are in the chord and even if I hit the non-chord tone it feels wrong. if you would do a vid on this or explain it here, it would really help.

Hey man! Been a minute since I’ve commented and thought today would be a good day to do so…cause Luka is in the house!! Def one of my favorites, love that man! Seriously, you get the best of the best in your studio, always! ..love it!
So I wanted to let you know that I am still trying to develop a solid foundation of proper support. I seem to keep slipping back into old habits, sometimes in the middle of while I’m singing, subconsciously even. I almost need like a 30 day plan solely focused on developing solid/proper PERMANENT support, and that alone! ..truthfully lol.
Anyhow, I hope you’re doing well! Again thank you for continuing to share with us all of your insight/wisdom, it’s priceless!
*Quick Question-Would private 1 on 1 vocal sessions with you be the key to my achieving solid support maybe?

Hey! Your timing is interesting :) Lukas actually has a course coming out at the end of this month called "total vocal fitness" where he helps students craft a training plan for their voices. This might be JUST the program/interaction you need! Sign up for Lukas' free warmups course in the video description and you'll get an email when his full program is available. :)

I have a question related to what Lukas mentioned about our voice just working when we wake up:
Why does my voice sound noticeably better after I've had my first meal of the day than it does before I've eaten anything? Before the meal, my voice is all over the place, it's shotty, more prone to breaking up a bit. After the meal, i'm able to match pitch again, sustain notes longer without breaking up or getting airy.
Is it just a matter of the food that's giving me the energy i need? I'd like to know what it might be

I love his vocals, as well as Veil of Maya in principle, but he had better follow his own advice, because he often smears notes horribly live

Saw them in 2019. Lucas did an amazing job! I assumed he would take it easy, slack off a bit. Instead, he absolutely pulled it off. He is an inspiring vocalist to be sure.
