      I think it's pretty simple, you want to live in an Asian environment, pick KL. Btw, KL or Klang Valley with 9mil population is a multi-racial, highly modern and progressive city with 40% chinese, 40% malay, 10% indians and 10% foreigners so, it's far from so called "muslim". From KL, all major Asian city is 2 - 5 hours away, how do you beat that? Moreover, the food is amazing, the best in Asia hands down.

    I Filipino American from NYC and I think KL is one of the best cities in the world period. I'd say it's better than most cities in America, Europe, South America, Africa, Australia and Asia. Here are the reasons why:
    1. Good job opportunities, modern infrastructure and low cost of living
    2. Diverse with Chinese, Malays, Indians, Arabs, Western expats, other types of Asians and constant tourists from all over the world
    3. Some of the best food in the world, lively street food markets, amazing restaurants from every ethnicity
    4. You can experience upscale clubs, bars, luxury shopping like you can get in Dubai
    5. The streets are alive with people eating street food, street musicians, people dancing, shisha, coffee shops - there is an energy to KL
    6. The city is absolutely stunning with beautiful architecture, jungle settings, parks, nice big, dense city that is interesting to walk around and explore
    7. You can do quick weekend trips all over SE Asia with just 1-3 hour flights to Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Saigon, Bali, Manila, Cebu, Laos, Hong Kong, Taipei etc - nowhere in the world can compete with those lively cities and paradise getaways. The top 7 most visited countries on earth are all in Asia for a reason - it's the most exciting, fun place in the world with the best beaches, nightlife, buzz, outdoor activities, shopping, massive cities etc. You can never be bored in Southeast Asia.

Your comparison is pretty much spot on. The high quality of apartments and housing you get in Kuala Lumpur is extremely cheap compared to Dubai. For 2 - 3000 AED per month, you would be living like royalty in Malaysia where unfortunately, here in Dubai you would be lucky to find a very basic apartment for that much.

    i am a student from Pakistan and have lived in Kuala Lumpur and other parts of Malaysia for a commutative 3 years or so. My two cents are that Malaysia as a whole feels quite friendly. Arabic countries feel a bit threatening, no offence to them but their way of dealing with non-arabs feels unfriendly or unhospitable for some reason. I have been to Dubai only for transit and have never set foot in the country itself, but I can safely say that Malaysians are more friendy and gentle overall. While Dubai and Arab countries are good with their laws, and are muslims just like us, but they need to show some leniency and friendliness when dealing with foreigners, especially those from third-world countries such Nepal, Pakistan, India etc. Otherwise I love and respect both of them. My heart is with Malaysia though :)

      There's definitely a lot of construction in Dubai, I'd view that as a good long-term thing because it means things are getting better and they are offering more and more. I don't buy what people say about culture in Dubai. Generally, people criticizing the culture and richness in those regards haven't explored very broadly. If you visit the country as a tourist and only visit downtown, the Marina and Palm or something like that it's easy to see how people will say it's "fake" but if you explore a lot of the other areas you find quite a different experience. Of course to each their own about what they prefer.

    Dubai is great for people who want glam and shine. Living in KL, I love how chilled and non-judgmental people are. I find Dubai painfully materialistic. Unlike Dubai, people will happily eat at roadside stalls because the food is great. Noone cares what car you drive, or what locality you live in. Plus things are much more affordable in KL.

    Dubai is carved out from a barren desert.. you may find a street or road in Dubai but it has no history since been carved out of nothing.
    Yet in KL , that road or street have history, it maybe just long time ago was a path or a bullcart trail and it grew its importance and finally becomes a main road or street. It has history.
    KL is the only city in the world with a forest reserve smack in the middle of the city, the Bukit Nenas Forest Reserve. Take a walk in there u suddenly just feel u are in a jungle not feeling that surrounding it is a Cosmopolitan city.

    I remember walking around KL one afternoon... my weather app told me... Feels Like 50c - slightly uncomfortable. I found certain areas in KL could be cleaner and a rat jumped out on me one morning near The Pavilion mall. I really like KL for the food and general experience. I've not, as yet travelled to UAE apart from changing planes - so cannot comment on comparisons but I hate paying for expensive hotel rooms or meals.

    • @MichaelRosmer
      @MichaelRosmer 3 роки тому +11

      UAE is actually very affordable for hotels. Yes, there are expensive options and certain key times of year for instance over new year's that are expensive but you can often get decent places for the $100-$150/night range. This obviously isn't as inexpensive as KL, as I recall Four Seasons in KL is the cheapest in the world along with maybe Alexandria Egypt.
      Meals are another matter, food in UAE is incredibly expensive.
      KL is definitely not the cleanest in certain areas but in other areas is great.

I've been to KL a few times and really enjoyed it. I really think they need to try hard to get the visa situation sorted out, try to attract nomads who are happy to pay 15% to 20% tax. Make it easy.

      @MichaelRosmer 3 роки тому +3

      Yeah, the costs are a thing. You can live much cheaper if you're willing to live in areas like Deira. Of course, you can run the math of how much you need in tax savings to compensate for the extra cost of living since your costs of living won't generally scale whereas the tax savings do. So if you're making $100k/yr the cost of living vs an eastern European or South East Asian country is likely going to exceed the tax savings. But if you're making $1 million/yr. the tax savings are probably greater than the extra cost of living.
