I think it was a foreigner from a neighboring country who asking for a photo. Malaysians rarely take photos randomly with Westerners unless they already know each other.
exactly... especially in KL where kids grew up seeing caucasian all the time, it's really nothing special about them that makes us want to take photos with them... 😅
I agree, local Malaysians don't do that. I'm guessing these are workers from other poor Asian countries who want to impress their buddies here or friends back home that they are hanging out with a Caucasian girl.
FYI, Malaysians don’t simply or randomly take photos with foreigners no matter how weird, ugly, beautiful, famous or infamous you are. That’s not our culture or the trend here. 99% of those people who do that are most likely foreigners of other Asia countries who works, lives or stays in Malaysia 😊

That's odd. Malaysians generally never asks strangers for photos unless the person is famous or an influencer, I guess those people not Malaysian. Also, chewing food with mouth open or talking with mouth full is considered rude in Malaysia too.
It could be challenging to recognize foreigners since it is very multicultural. Malaysia has a lot of foreigners only Malaysian can easily differentiate them.

Dating here in Malaysia are hard because it is VERY different than in Europe. First of all, dating is considered a foreign culture so some people are uncomfortable of being alone with others. Secondly, dating in Malaysia often happens to get to know another person while in Europe, it could be done for sexual interaction which usually does not happen here. Thirdly, Malaysians attend to seek long-term relationship with someone and therefore, they could not ask a girl out on a date as often they could be asked in Europe. And lastly, religious factors plays a bigger role here in Malaysia compare to Europe. Malaysia has four major religions - Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity - and of all these four, only Christians could go on dates easily while the other three religious followers could be more conservative and conserved.
you were spot on bro. we kindly a lil bit reserve in terms of relationships because we value the time we spend to reach that point, because we've been thought what ever happen, family number 1. because we have been thought ASIAN culture compare to Open culture in western country.

As a westerner who moved to Kuala Lumpur this year I totally understand what she means about the dating culture. If you're not interested in the locals there are very limited options for you and if you're not part of a major demographic group you're going to be lonely as most people stick to their own kind. Even if you are interested in dating a local its going to take you a long time to progress in your relationship as people's concept of a relationship is a lot different than the people in the west even if they're in their 20's. If you value having romantic relationships before marriage you're going to have a really tough time here.

i live in Norway and norwegians in general have a good english. They have the opportunity to travel around countries in their life so they take advantage of these opportunities and create international networking.
Tip - we have minimum wage (although not the best) and paid monthly (unlike such as in America, paycheck to paycheck). We have strict Employment Act (which many do not know). In Malay culture, it's a no no to talk while eating.
5:24 "people chew with their mouth open" definitely not by most malaysians, the malays dont do that, we have this thing called 'adat' , english doesnt have a word for it but its similar to 'customs'. or simply it means unwritten, traditional code governing all aspects of personal conduct from birth to death. example: like you see alot of malay kids/youngsters, when they greet the parents, adults, elders they will take your hand and bow and put your hand on/close to their face or forehead as a sign of respect. so eating with your mouth close is one of them.. its considered rude to eat with your mouth open on a table with others

Dating is difficult everywhere if one is looking for perfection. I'm a Malaysian living in London for almost 10 years; everybody said it's difficult here too. Meanwhile, the population density in London is probably 3-4x higher per square km than in KL, and the city is diverse, yet many young adults still complain about the difficulty of finding someone! It's almost statistically absurd. I've seen my share of boys and girls who struggled in this because they look for something that does not exist - perfection. Also, it's not a mystery that many modern women look for ~6-foot men, tall dark handsome, high-value men with 7-8 figures salary. Just look at some interviews; I guarantee you'd be appalled by the women's requirements. But they don't know these men are just 1% of the male population and have much to choose from.

We don't need entitled white privileged people like her in this country. She is only here because Norway's currency is strong, she knows in her country she won't get the red carpet white privilege treatment. We Asians should not give face to entitled foreigners who look down on locals and thinks we are so desperate for a selfie with her plain jane face.
She said it all, As a foreigner i relate, just to add, Malaysia is a nice place to live, bet me, many people prefer to stay in Malaysia. Socially and economically Malaysia is welcoming.🙏

20 years before Instagram and WhatsApp an Indonesian guy came upto my western guest to take her photo. It seems it is to show his family that he is accepted by western people. Actually now on Instagram there are lots of such stranger phototrends. Here in KL there is a funny strict law rule so locals know the rules. There are churches that westerners should try to visit to know the law rules. Also when we visit Rome do as Romans do! Travel in Malaysia is great. I was in Ipoh, it is so under developed like 30 years behind KL and so behind Melaka!
Its weird when you told that Malaysian always asking for picture together with you…in Malaysia we have multi ethnic from diff parts of south east asia wich look like us, maybe those you encounter are them. to tell that Malaysian loves taking picture with eurapean is a bit exeggerate, Malaysian would label you as “Perasan” (recognised yourself as pretty/attractive but actually you are not)…
as a japanese who lives in malaysia, her opinion about local people's distances is quite similar to mine. Surfacely, they look extrovert and try to get along with foreigners. but in reality, they don't try to get along with foreigners in private during weekend. and they look like only get along with their same ethnic malaysian.
i agree dating life is hard especially if you're older. In malaysia people get married very young and older people doesn't go out very much, so your best bet to get dates is online
Malaysians in general are much warmer and friendlier than Sporeans (not including those useless thugs on bikes who rob you at knife point). This casualness is unpretentious and welcoming when you’re in the right company. However, the flip side of this casual culture is also devoid of modern day etiquette like yes chewing with your mouth open and talking as well as coughing with your mouth open loudly. Yes the food is amazing, especially if you don’t care for your calories and cholesterol that is.
To be fair, the place she rent probably contribute to more than half of her spending. Pretty common for foreigner to do so as the rent is relatively way cheaper compared to their home country so it's *justifiable*

Love to watch this interview talking abt Malaysia from a foreigner/expat pov. KL might be the best city for expact. Literally It's a cheaper/bigger version of Singapore. But less chaotic than Bangkok. Its central, varieties n yes, cheaper among other southeast Asian cities.
Seriously.. i am echoing so many other sane people. We dont take random selfies with white/strangers as if to show off in our social platforms or ego boost. Either your social circle is too small or the places you went is depraved of normal usual locals
I,ve been to Scandinavian, norway especially,i really hate the weather. I hate the cold weather elsewhere. I,ve travelled almost everywhere. To Synne, why dont you make comments on yr country instead. If dating is hard in Malaysia, why not you remain in yr country.
About the photos, most Asian actually feeling "wow, its so great to have a photo with white people", it has different version of this "Social Contact" with foreigner, but here im saying about specific culture ... because, most of them really think its special to able to contact with people around the world ... most Malaysian are Oriental, feeling shyness is a must ... Even me as Native in East Malaysia feel also great even have a small talk with Chinese ... i dont know why, or maybe its about im easily attract with them or what, i even have in mind to treat them as family too(But not for that photo haha),Tradition and Custom make us aware of shyness and respect ... BUT, if you going to have deep talk with a person differ from you in here, i am afraid that we will being so nice ... Most Malaysian are hard to approach the foreigner first, because of the shyness ... just like me as native Dayak ... i learn this from Social Interact between Occident and Oriental ..... history prove that Asian are really "wow" with you, but too shy to make it first ... imho ....
As malaysian woman I can confirm that dating in Malaysia it is so hard. It is nothing to do we as women behave ourselves. It is the men who DONT. They always ask inappropriate question and comments.
I don't know why people are spreading false things about Malaysia but I'm enjoying living in my country & would never dream of visiting other country. For me everything I needed is in Malaysia & enjoying my life every second.
I don't think you should make such conclusion about her. Because no information about her expectations are being divulged from the interview. We simply don't know what are her expectations from dating. We also don't know what type of man she prefers for a date. Local men? Expats? Rich? Average income? Ethnicity? Religious views? Tall? Short? Skinny? Chubby? Handsome? Average looking? Caucasians? Asians? We don't know all that to make a conclusion about her. And we also don't know what is her main purpose of dating. Is it for fun? Serious relationship? A fling? Or a marriage? Until we get more information from her, I would say it is rather premature for you to conclude that she has full of expectations.
@@MaxChernov Depends on individual how they perceive such differences. It could be a big difference for one individual and small for another. But one thing I can see the cultural difference between Asian and Western is that generally if you are dating or marrying Asians you are not only dating or marrying the individual him/herself but also the immediate family and for some, the extended family. I don't think this kind of culture applies to dating/marrying Westerners whose culture tend to give more emphasis on individual rather than family or community.

Same with Malaysian Chinese culture, a "No-No" to talk with food in mouth ! Consider as rude, bad manner by Chinese Malaysian elders !

"people chew with their mouth open"
definitely not by most malaysians, the malays dont do that, we have this thing called 'adat' , english doesnt have a word for it but its similar to 'customs'. or simply it means unwritten, traditional code governing all aspects of personal conduct from birth to death.
example: like you see alot of malay kids/youngsters, when they greet the parents, adults, elders they will take your hand and bow and put your hand on/close to their face or forehead as a sign of respect.
so eating with your mouth close is one of them.. its considered rude to eat with your mouth open on a table with others

1. asking for photos? hahaha i don't think that's malaysian. just because they look like us it does not mean they are malaysian... as malaysian this is funny. real malaysian will only ask for photos if you are someone famous (if they recognize you). Are you? If not i can assure they are not malaysian. The least malaysian do is just look at you or stare from afar hehe
2. dating is hard? maybe it's due to how your expectations... the higher your expectations, the less chance you got to date anyone. i've met a lot of foreigner who expect 'dating' in malaysia similar with the way their dating culture back home... when they can have casual sex, display their affectionate publicly... malaysia is modest, we don't do that... behave in public; all is good no one cares
Perhaps she is a walking red flag, that's why all the good quality men are avoiding her. Also her valley girl vocal fry voice is annoying af.

casual sex is immoral and bad for society
Dating is hard for a Western female expat in Singapore too. My Russian teacher told me this. The locals are intimidated to ask you out and the male expats tend to treat the female expats like they are on Tinder dates but they end up marrying the local women. I felt sorry for her when she told me she wanted to marry not be on long Tinder conquests. I hope woman who wants marriage gets healthy men for marriage wherever and whoever they are.
Im a malaysian. Im quite certain those who asked to take pictures with her are from neighnouring countries who came to work here. Malaysians, regardless of ethnicity would never ask for such things from a stranger. We have bangladeshis, indian nationals, people from nepal, myannar who come to work here - i dont blame her if she couldnt tell the difference.
Anyway, i am glad she likes it here and wish her all the best.
Malaysian are a reserve type. It's always Malay, Chinese and Indian first culture. Definitely different from the west.

I am a Spanish citizen leaving in London since 2019 and I agree with you.

Lovely video. The weather in Norway is too boring. The prices are too high. I love Malaysia been there twice.loved Penang. Langkawi is pretty. And many things too see.KL is safe and very clean.
The Sovereign Wealth Fund in Norway is the richest in the world as they don't have corruption, I am not from Norway but admire how they invested the revenues from North Sea Oil to take care of their people , (unlike in the UK) and especially the infamous 1MDB Sovereign Wealth Fund in Malaysia.
It's actually not hard to be vegetarian in Malaysia. There are many options and it is quite common to have a vegetarian friend here and there. I think we shouldn't be making assumptions of her dating life based on the limited information shared here. Many are jumping to conclusions here about her diet and/or her preference for expat guys only. She did not mention any of these things and it's her personal life. As a Malaysian, I am ashamed to read such shallow comments by fellow Malaysians. Stay respectful people, we are better than this
100% agree! There is not enough context to judge
So make the context max... dont come into malaysia with singaporean eye..
Wow props to you for leaving this comment. Very good and wise reply
There's more vegan / vegetarian food being incorporated into most omni restaurants now due to the demand.

Im soooo glad hearing how much u love living in my country 🫠🥹🫶🏻
For foreign women, i think it is true that dating life in Malaysia or to any ASEAN countries is difficult as men usually look to foreign women not easy to adjust and adapt to the local life, culture and religious belief
Here principle date is want to know for marry..... Marry here is one time only in a life....i dont know europe people
I'm a married foreigner in Taiwan, and it's the same here, but a lot of foreign men marry local woman but not the other way around. Do you think it's because Asian men are not as open-minded as Asian women?
men look to LOCAL women not foreign
Her accent is interesting. Her voice has that stereotypical valley girl tone to it which some people find annoying but at the same time, her Norwegian accent creeps in. I wonder if its because of the influence of American media. I hear lot of Scandinavians speak very good English and some even adopted the American accent from consuming lots of American media.
She went to university in the States.
It's so easy to pick up accent especially when you have lived and studied in a certain place for some time. It just happens naturally most of the time.
@@sofiaglove not necessarily but it's easier for some people to adopt a new accent.
Yeah, it's annoying when she does the vocal fry.
@@pinkymoon5039 yup, that's what I'm saying and it's a lot easier when you are surrounded by them. My roommates were American for 4 years and without knowing it I picked up their accent when returned to Malaysia.
Islam is about if you like someone you set up a meeting with them under the supervision of guardian and talk to them to see if you guys are compatible. If yes then marriage. This is done to prevent perverts, guys looking to only sleep and run from taking advantages.
WHATTT? malaysian asking you for a photo randomly? Errrr never heard such kind.
Good interview. You couldn't have found a better person to speak to about Malaysia as a foreigner. A level headed lady. Surprise, Scandinavians are so very civilized. Good info on Malaysian ways! Thanx! 👍🇲🇾

Taking photo with her? Not ordinary for malaysian. 😂
Listening to her, she is basically a “tourist” for 6 years in Malaysia.
Miss, next time just say NO if you are uncomfortable your photo taken. And as Malaysian i can say, taking photo with foreinger is very very very cringy. No Malaysian would do that. Malaysia people are reserved and polite, sometimes shy And rarely want to interuppt other people.
*Welcome to New home Town Malaysia*
Don't date...just get married 😂

Hi, I just discovered this video and your channel because I arrived at Kuala Lumpar just yesterday from Singapore, and before that I am from Canada. I love this type of content. It's super informative. And I am just starting to appreciate Singaporean and Malaysian culture
After watching this video.. now i understand why she said dating in Malaysia is difficult.. it harder to find premium quality boyfriend here in Malaysia. Because most of them already married or most of them just going for a random paradise destination fling..
The best quality Malaysians and expats are not in Malaysia.
I just returned from an extended stay in SE Asia. I found dating Malaysian women very easy. Perhaps because I’m not afraid nor tentative, and am very open and friendly. I found women to be intelligent, interesting and fun.
Did you hook up or just date?

Bro please let her know that Malaysians would NEVER chew with their mouth open like we're not some uncultured people here please let her know that people she saw doing that were 99.99% labours coming from neighboring countries and not Malaysians to clear the misunderstanding.
And one more thing those people who asks her to take photo were most likely not Malaysians either perhaps Indonesian or pinoy.
Thanks 😊
Org luar selalu nya, tp yg kene rakyat malaysia yg kene. Sedangkan malaysia ramai warga asing yg kerja di sini, warga Malaysia di didik, negara maju tidak sama metaliti.
Yeah. I love Pulau Kapas as welll
Synne should go to places where people don't spend 6000 RM a month if she wants to date
She says the rent is 3,600 ringgit a month. I’m wondering if that amount is for herself or the total rent.
Probably those who wanna take photo with her may thought she is an actress or celebrity...😅
She is such a plain jane.
Dating is hard because you want a tall rich good looking Malaysian because you're probably taller, richer and more good looking than most Malaysian guys. Those few rare guys who are like that are chased by most Malaysian woman or are already married because the culture is conservative so yes there is tough competition. Here's a tip, look for a guy not only on an individual basis but also for his family relationships and community relationships. Do your research on different ethnicities and you should find a great guy.
Learn to differentiate between
Malaysian and foreign workers. all those years living here and still can't tell.? LOL get off KL sis. you will see the true side of Malaysia outside of Klang Valley. east coast, northern peninsula, borneo. those are authentic parts. I swear, no one bothers to take pictures with random tourist unless you're already famous.
Mad dogs and Englishmen (and Norwegian/Russian women) go out in the midday sun! 😂
I like her English accent.
Ps: I am glad you have adopted the Malaysian habit of not wearing shoes indoors! Great!!
As an international student here in Malaysia dating has never crossed my mind.
that's so sad. wish you better buddy. .loads of intls i know in malaysia say the opposite, so anomalies don't count! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Asking for photo together is a hint to have date with her. She has missed many wonderful times.
About difficult to dating. The main reason that People feel shy due you are foriegner but from good relationship with truly clearly sincerely caring true loving gentleman which respect you so much Just give trial for good relationship im sure you can make it. Anyway good luck to you forever and everlasting entirely.
If you don't miss your country, you should marry a local and become part of us.😂
We don't need entitled white privileged people like her in this country. She is only here because Norway's currency is strong, she knows in her country she won't get the red carpet white privilege treatment. We Asians should not give face to entitled foreigners who look down on locals and thinks we are so desperate for a selfie with her plain jane face.
Great vid. Very interesting.
Former HK expat here 🙋🏼♂️
I know there is a very vey very nice nasi lemak at JB....... I want to get in touch with Ms Synne...... can?
She said it all, As a foreigner i relate, just to add, Malaysia is a nice place to live, bet me, many people prefer to stay in Malaysia. Socially and economically Malaysia is welcoming.🙏
Yup,dating here is hard
That's why I'm still single untill now
9:13 it's Ringgit not "ringdits". And the noun can either be singular or plural depending on the context, so you don't need to add in an "s" to denote a plural amount.
Great video also from norway been living in Klcc for 24 months and now back in Norway miss Kl so going back soon i hope great place great people hope to retire there ..
Aren't there a lot of Buddhists, Indians/Chinese (who practice vegetarianism) and other vegetarian restaurants too?
Asking for cold weather people to used to it like asking African to withstand the heat basically...😂😂... Its nice seeing an expat happy settling for now but dating advice i can give, try learn to assimilate with the culture..few difference make it interesting but too much will break it apart..
Durian is my absolute fav. Singaporean here
Malaysians in general are much warmer and friendlier than Sporeans (not including those useless thugs on bikes who rob you at knife point).

RM6000 per month and she's single. Wow.

Most Malaysian are hard to approach the foreigner first, because of the shyness ... just like me as native Dayak ...
i learn this from Social Interact between Occident and Oriental ..... history prove that Asian are really "wow" with you, but too shy to make it first ... imho ....
Dating in Malaysia is easy..just be yourselves..behave in public..be moderate.. Nobody cares..and nobody get nabbed.. 😆
As malaysian woman I can confirm that dating in Malaysia it is so hard. It is nothing to do we as women behave ourselves. It is the men who DONT. They always ask inappropriate question and comments.
@@nikiyenc don't think it's hard to date. But it's hard to find the right person (life partner) for oneself.

I don't know why people are spreading false things about Malaysia but I'm enjoying living in my country & would never dream of visiting other country. For me everything I needed is in Malaysia & enjoying my life every second.
What kinda of dating do she meant? Seems like she has limited her own boyndaries with full of expectations. Asian culture is different from westerns.
what's the biggest difference?
