Malaysia is a muslim friendly country in the world. No one can denied that. Can find halal food (not only halal but delicious too) almost everywhere, easy to find mosque/musolla, water is everywhere for washroom and ablution etc. And at the same time it's not too strict (religiously), you still can have fun and good times there and see cultural diversity where you can see mosques, churches and temples were built side by side and the preachers can openly preach their own religion without any problems and all the races live peacefully amongst each other (no races riot). Where could you find these kind of thing anywhere in the world? 🤷 That's why you can see muslims (and non muslims also) tourist/migrants worldwide love this country. 😁
As a foreigner living in KL who frequently travels to Singapore and Bangkok, I have to agree. Living wise, KL is definitely the best place in ASEAN for families. But Bangkok is a great place to visit for a few days.
KL: best quality of life spent per dollar, anywhere in the world... this is also my opinion, and many other expats who have lived in KL. Malaysians just don’t know how cheap things are in Malaysia because they’ve not known what it’s like in other parts of the world.
@@MichaelRosmer yes of course, I’m a Malaysian, but I’ve been living abroad for the most of my life. Africa, Asia, America, Europe.. in the end I still find the best value for money to be Malaysia. Just as a comparison, Malaysia’s Per capita income is higher than her regional neighbors eg Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia, but surprisingly food is cheaper in Malaysia, this was also told to me by Indonesians who used to live and work in Malaysia. My bf, who is a German, was inviting people from Germany over to Malaysia just to impress them with how cheap it is here, so much that it’s unbelievable for the Germans. Having a meal for two in a Japanese restaurant for 12euro? The same would be five times more expensive in Germany, and the food isn’t as good.

Bangkok is 4 times the size of KL and it's amazing to explore, but takes more effort. I know your post is a year-old. I'll weigh in as someone that has lived in Chiang Mai Thailand for 6 years. I am stunned and shocked by the prices when I go and visit Bangkok. So to recap your observations Thailand is much easier to get a Visa especially retirement Visa it's only $30 per year and you have to sink $25,000 US dollars into a bank account. Of that you can spend 1/2 during the year. Any retired guy should have 25,000 US 🇺🇸 in an emergency fund so it's no big deal to put it in a Thailand bank account and let it sit. The prices in Chiang Mai are on par with Malaysia maybe even cheaper I paid $76,000 us for a three bedroom two bathroom home completely furnished with beautiful hand carved Thai wood furniture as well as beautiful Thailand art I live in a gated community and pay $20 per month for security and swimming pool including exercise/health club we have a walking trail around a lake. I wouldn't live anywhere else but Chiangmai Thailand. Incredibly happy with the bars and nightclubs in the city and great grocery stores and shopping. Again I'm totally shocked when I visit the tourist areas like Phuket, Bangkok ,and Pattaya. Also I hate the weather in Bangkok it's way too humid and too hot for me most of the Year here in the north of Thailand in the mountains the weather is delightful 7 months out of the year obtw we have great shopping malls with beautiful Cinemas here in Chiang Mai too
In Bangkok, the first thing that hits you is the smell of sewage, everywhere. Price Discrimination is in your face everywhere, entry to venues like a zoo or parks X for locals and 2X for foreigners. They call Thailand the land of smiles, maybe in small towns and villages, not in Bangkok; the locals there don't want to have anything to do with you if they're not selling you a product or a service, they look at you as a necessary evil. Kuala Lumpur is cleaner, friendlier, cheaper, more honest, better food, and English speakers are almost everywhere.
I am retired and have been living in Bangkok for 4 years now. I live in central Bangkok and love living in a city for the first time. I actually like that BKK is very Asian and a little gritty at the street level and very modern and cosmopolitan at the BTS Skytrain level. There is so much to do here. I visited Kuala Lumpur for 3 days followed by 10 days on Borneo. I definitely enjoyed KL but I left with the feeling that living there would be a little boring and I felt that the city was a little sterile. Different people. Different tastes. I moved here from the San Francisco Bay Area as another point of comparison.

Dubai. It's more interesting over there. I am from Kl, but it's a reserved city. More conservative. If you are old and in the midst of retirement, Kl might be fine for you but if you are young and passionate Dubai is the answer.
What you said summarized it perfectly: Do business in Singapore, party in Bangkok, live in KL. Short trips to that triangle of cities. Also, food and grocery shopping is way, way better than what you get in the West, I agree. So much more selection, brands from all over the world, better produce, meats, seafood, markets etc. I live in NYC and our groceries are total garbage compared to the rest of the world, particularly compared to the large Asian cities and London and Paris.
Maybe you should also do a comparison between cities, towns and islands in Thailand vs Malaysia. 1. Hua Hin vs Ipoh. (towns near the capitals) 2. Phuket vs Penang (historical towns on islands) 3. Hat Yai vs Alor Setar (far south vs far north) 4. Koh Samui vs Langkawi (island vs island) 5.Ayutthaya vs Melaka (historical towns) 5. Chiang Mai vs Johor Bahru. (far North vs far South)

KL is my all-time favourite city that I have visited and Bangkok is my 3rd favourite - I have visited many cities but BKK and KL are in my top 3. My top 3 cities visited are KL, Singapore and Bangkok...even Jakarta is good too. Bangkok has a lot of buzz, very chaotic in a good way and is a fantastic tourist city with so much to do but KL wins for many reasons for me and I'm planning to retire there
Thank you for sharing your experience. KL definitely seems like a great place for retirement.
Any other cities you'd like us to cover?
@@OffshoreCitizen Hmmm I have visited a lot of cities so here is a list of cities that I have been to but not sure some of them are places for retirement:
Istanbul, Cairo, Dubai, Jakarta, Rome, Barcelona, Manila, Lisbon, Barcelona, Madrid, Valletta, Athens, New York, Doha, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai....and oh yes cannot forget London (I'm from the UK - maybe not the best city to retire though)
I spent two weeks in each city as a tourist and I have to say KL is one of the best cities I've ever been to. KL beats Bangkok in everything except nightlife

What about a Bandung City in Indonesia? I heard there also a very relaxing a eco friendly tourism city at there. 😃😃
I would use the territorial tax arrangements and live long-term in Malaysia - when MM2H restarts. Reasons... nice, friendly people generally, English is widely spoken, wonderful food, a good level of infrastructure (roads, internet, malls, etc.), international hub - KL, some nice beaches, good value for money, interesting architecture, Georgetown Penang UNESCO world heritage site, Borneo forests, and nature. Alcohol is heavily taxed but I'm not a heavy drinker...often! NB: They seem to like polite British people - which greatly adds to our decision. Like you said Bangkok good place to visit but perhaps not the best to live long-term.
Hope once travelling ban uplift, do come and feel welcome here.
i'm malaysian, since i've worked in hospitality and customer service in kl... yes, i was always in awe when the british open their mouths, especially the elderlies. their choices of words and phrases, sometimes with witty jokes very pleasant and warm for me. one more thing, they never acted like a boss. with a little help to them, they would reply with a great appreciation. no...i've never asked for the fantastic words, but that's how the british courtesy i would say. we are not flawless, but courtesy would help a lot for both locals and expats.
In Malaysia politeness and friendliness goes a long way and can get you out of difficult situations.

That's why you can see muslims (and non muslims also) tourist/migrants worldwide love this country.
It's soooo good! Have you lived there?

2. Phuket vs Penang (historical towns on islands)
3. Hat Yai vs Alor Setar (far south vs far north)
4. Koh Samui vs Langkawi (island vs island)
5.Ayutthaya vs Melaka (historical towns)
5. Chiang Mai vs Johor Bahru. (far North vs far South)
Hey thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately we still haven’t been to some of these places so can’t share any opinions yet. When we vist we could certainly talk about them too! 😎
I love the chaos of Bangkok. I wouldn't want to live there full time but it's nice for a visit. I like how the public transport system is expanding (finally!). How is the transport system in KL?
And yeah ..you can search about it on youtube or google 👍🏻
In KL we are all walking. No road, no river, nothing 😂😂😂😂
I wish i watched this video BEFORE coming all the way to Thailand 😂 I totally agree Thailand everywhere is chaotic and polluted but you get the nice beaches and Amazing people here. I wouldn’t want to live here though
