Malaysia is a joyful place to live with the nicest people I've met in my travels. I was in Penang, the Pearl of the Orient and, while I loved my occasional jaunts to KL, I think relaxed Penang beats it for quality of life. Dubai for me is far too hot and somewhat unnecessarily rigid with all its rules. It is also ridiculously expensive. Between KL and Dubai, however, it's not even close - KL by a distance.
Been to Dubai and Singapore. I love Malaysia as a cheaper, more open version of Singapore. Dubai has spectacular visuals and is a rich man's paradise. But, I love street food and the cuisines of different cultures. I also like the strong family spirit of the area and its proximity to Bali. : )
Southeast Asia has way more options for the rich man too. There's way, way, way more money in Asia than the Middle East, and even Europe and North America.
Malaysia is in a better neighborhood and has better weather. If people live in Malaysia they are close to Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and china. Malaysia has a way better landscape too. I appreciate the information you share, thank you.
KL would be my 1st choice, having visited both I like the friendly approach by Malays, but I’m British by birth and I feel their friendship is historical, because but excellent comparison
I know religion is a taboo subject to many but these two places are predominantly Muslim, which goes to show that the west, especially Americans, have really nothing to fear from Muslims and the religion. It’s been said that Muslims in Malaysia, or a great number of them, show the true face of Islam ie tolerance, kindness, patience, being charitable and kind, a sort of live and let live mentality, certain corrupt people in power and authority aside. It’s not about rabid extremism; it’s always about the middle path and showing the way by example and deed, ie your character. By the way, good job!
@@pipspiper usually it’s the US that would enter a country, usually an Islamic one, like Afghanistan or Iraq et el, to overthrow its ‘dictator’ or ‘barbaric’ government. Would any other country do that to the US or another country for that matter? Would they send troops and bomb tracts of America just because they didn’t like Trump and his policies or any other president? Yes, unfortunately, 9-11 happened but that is not equal to a whole country sending their troops over to wreak devastation on a ‘troubled’ land so as to ‘free’ the people and give them democracy. Maybe now Russia is sadly taking a leaf out of the US’ book.
I lived in Kuala Lumpur and in the middle east (Qatar & Saudi Arabia). Well i guess i would admit Dubai is better place to be in only if you see yourself working for a couple of years. However, Malaysia would be better in a long term stay as it is a center of South East Asia where traveling and going for short gateaway for family time is possible.I mean come you certainly have more holidays in Malaysia compare to Dubai.I remember one time we had pretty much public holidays every week for the month.
Things i like about Dubai a) Cheap Cars, Cheap Gas b) Service is quick, easy and great c) Everything is available and easily available d) Dont' have to worry about women's safety e) Your Kids will grow up never knowing what drugs are or ever disrespecting women Things i would say are not so cool about Dubai a) Getting license is a pain, if you aren't from a western country. Fines are very high for driving rules b) Service is expensive, i mean everything is expensive c) Hard to find casual places to just go have a drink, everything is so fancy and up n up d) You see this vibe where you feel people are just being taken advantage off, like poor people can barely survive e) Hot as hello, Mar to Aug is a horrible time to be there
Dubai is tax free (Individual), and CGT free too. Getting a Golden visa forc5 or 10 years is easier than MM2H. No work restrictions on Golden visa whilst MM2H has.
Malaysia (1) Malaysians are multi culture so people tolerate each other. (2) English is widely spoken in Malaysia so language is not a barrier. (3) KL is greener, as it is in a tropical country. You get a lot of rain but never get sand storm. Dubai (1) Dubai has more prestige and known as Middle East hub for business so the brand name is there. (2) Imported food from Europe like cheese are cheaper in Dubai than in Malaysia (3) Average income is higher in Dubai and so does the cost of living
Between Dubai and KL I would choose KL to live. Hot and dry versus hot and humid, zero versus low taxes, both are Muslim countries but Dubai does not treat its non-Muslims well in law.
My brother left a nice government job in Dubai Electric (10+ years, subsidised housing, zero tax) and moved to Canada and started from the ground floor (night shift, shitty pay, no leave in first year). Not once has he complained about the taxes, snow or anything. Like, not a single time. You literally could not pay him to move back to Dubai. Laws of a country and what future your kids have matter a lot to people.
And the future for kids in Canada is being brainwashed into changing their gender by Trudeau's teachers then the courts taking the kids off the parent when the parent decides he doesn't want his kid mutilated
Malaysia has nature(top 20 countries with biodiversity , both land and sea). And KL has a rainforest(not man-made). Dubai has many man-made stuff. I prefer nature than man-made stuff.
Thank you for the great video Andrew. Andrew, but I hope you don't mind me raising this point and that is the current situation in Malaysia. Just a side note, I do very much enjoy Malaysia. But not the Malaysia today. Malaysia has been under a very strict lockdown for several months. The borders have been sealed for the past 1.5 years, only the residents can enter the country but they still have to go through the hotel quarantine. Unlike Thailand, I believe one cannot select the hotel which means - well, it's not that great. So "go where you are treated best" goes right out of the window when it comes to the hotel quarantine. But the mere fact that Malaysia remains shut, 1.5 years on and there is absolutely no light in the tunnel when it comes to reopening, it is extremely difficult to make any plans for Malaysia. Naturally, the covid restrictions are temporary (well, one never knows!) but the pace to move forward in Malaysia is utterly slow.
It's not just external borders which have all but closed - but also travel between the states, and even regions within states. Unfortunately, Malaysia is turning into a police state - because you need a letter from the police, if you want to travel. Other problems: a corrupt political class including the police, and an increase in tensions between the Malays and Chinese/Indians. Something that has always been there, but exacerbated by this pandemic. With all these lock downs the economy is also starting to fall apart. The tourist industry, for one, has been hit hard, with hotels closing down - many for good. And local family shops are forced to stay closed, but large chains are able to stay open. This has resulted in an increase of suicides as many people are starting to lose hope.
@@bobm4623 Thank you for commenting Bob. Absolutely all of the issues you have mentioned - spot on, I just barely touched the surface of the issues in Malaysia. They have a very very long way to recover which hasn't even started. It seems all is going in the opposite direction.
Are you considering Dubai good weather? Hot and sticky in the extreme for half the year. I guess that's better than KL for warm and sticky all year around?
My ex-colleague lived there a few years (husband was a landscape contractor), and retired in johor now. She forgot to close the balcony doors(we are not used to that in malaysia). Came home with sands inside the house.
I lived in the UAE capital city of Abu Dhabi for two years on a work contract. Liked it way better than Dubai, which is more about style over substance. They're only about 75 miles apart, but there's a huge difference. If you are looking to actually retire and don't care about hitting the hotel bars every night and paying $10 for a draft beer, Abu Dhabi is far classier and definitely worth a look.
KL is the most humid country I've been. The thing that makes it worse is seeing Muslims having to wear hot hajib outfits, meanwhile Chinese girls wear short skirts lol. What kind of God tells you to cover up head to tail in such oppressive heat?
Yeah monsoons are so much better LOL but for real though it’s the tropical heat or desert heat to choose from. I’d rather choose the easier to live in and resource and manufacturer heavy country of Malaysia where cost of living undoubtably would be way less and get a lot of good amenities from living there I can tell you it’s definitely nice living there in comparison to my visit to Dubai. Maybeeeeee it’s because I wasn’t loaded down with gold my Dubai trip wasn’t thattttt fun but if you have to be loaded down in a 8 figure credit card or solid gold to have a vacation of decent luxury then Idk if Dubai is the place for everyone
The free zones in Dubai have very high fees and lots of red tape. Outside the free zone, you don’t have as high fees, but you need an Emirati partner who may not invest, but will take part of your profit and if there’s a problem, you can’t dissolve the relationship. How does Malaysia compare?
Not a fair comparison Dubai is a lot more developed than Kuala Lumpur. I've lived in both so I know the average westerner will most likely feel safer in Dubai. Although there's nothing wrong with Kuala Lumpur when compared to other cities that it far exceeds, but as far as the Dubai comparison, from my observations when a country is less developed it's usually not because of the infrastructure alone, it's the fact that they also suffer from a bit of tribalism and that's where some angry locals stem from seeing too many expats showing up to their areas, so then you're just relegated to expat only areas which are generally more costly than other areas in the city, you won't be able to live like a typical citizen in that country and benefit from the saving due to low cost of living, all because they'll still see you as an outsider and that is a problem that simply cannot be fixed by just improving the city scape and transportation system alone. Theres no point when they haven't advanced the society, it's held back by grey area social issues that haven't been solved yet.
Dubai is not developed. Unless you think fancy buildings and good roads are the definition of development. Dubai and the UAE is one of the world's most repressive countries in the world
@@SolomFoz I don't beleive you would've left that reply if you read the entirety of my post because it's been addressed. Every country can be compared to a better one and Dubai will certainly be mediocre to another country with a side by side comparison. But in this case, Kuala Lumpur has a long way to go when looked at in this particular comparison. But if you still hold hose beliefs despite the obvious issues listed above, then perhaps it's the right city for you to expetriate or retire in. Nice for a vacation but not for me.
@@zeeh7438 I’m just saying I’ve lived in both places and unless you’re a westerner ‘LOADED ABSOLUTELY THE FUCK DOWN WITH POUNDS OF GOLD’ then Dubai wants nothing from you LOL atleast the cost of living and cultural differences in the latter haveeeeee resources, manufacturing, and availability of real estate at much lower prices. The freedoms enjoyed by expats can be similar in both countries just the spending the limits are different… if you have to be loaded down with kilos of gold and diamonds to have a luxury experience then I’m not tooooooo sure Dubai is the right place for all ‘westerners’ lol I’ll admit I’ve seen someone get mugged in front of me in Malaysia but I was in a very seedy mall area and tbf that was the MOST crime I’ve seen in my stay there. Homelessness is a real problem there but again to compare the vastly two different expat regions is a bit flawed in my opinion IMO when you have to HAVE ‘old money’ just to have a good time in Dubai.
@Hcaz Eslof There's definitely trade offs made when deciding between the two if those are the only two options. Dubai comes at a cost that simply isn't worth it but with that comes no income/capital gains tax so that should help smooth things out if someone is planning to dip into their porfolio and Malaysia benefits from this too I believe. A westerner will always carry western values where ever he goes, and some will delude themselves themselves into thinking they can fix problems that are non existent back home. Right vs Left is childplay compared to some of these unresolved problems over there, because it's clearly not a political issue its a mentality of every regardless of their affiliations. I've seen people claim that it's due to low intelligence but of course that boards on racism because it claims that it's something they don't have the ability to change and it's inherent and I do not believe that. But it's certainly an issue that plagues a good city, and keeps westerners in specific areas of the city I still keep contact with some of them and they no doubt still only rent condos in those areas. Keyword there is "Condo", that doesn't sound like a lifestyle someone is after when looking at a country beyond for just a vacation. Dubai isn't perfect either and maybe free spirits will be put off by some strict policies but you will no doubt feel more free over there with others that share similar sentiments because they're more accustomed to that higher quality of life for a long duration.
I disagree based on the fact that foreigners can't live in Singapore without a work permit or owning a company that's worth over $150 million. It's not a viable hub unless you have a job there. Anyone can live in Dubai or KL indefinitely with the proper visas/permits. Singapore cannot be considered a viable hub unless a person has a job there.

Dubai is no more expensive than London or NYC, and in some cases you can get things cheaper, yet there's no taxes there. So I don't understand why people always say its expensive, when it's clearly not when you factor in the taxes.
Yeah but you get much more for what you pay for in London or NYC. Dubai isn't an alpha city like those 2 where there is tons to do and 20 million people in the city.
@@jeremyepstein7977 Dubai might technically qualify as an alpha city but it's not a real city. Chicago is way bigger than Dubai and Chicago isn't considered an alpha city.

I’ve lived in Kuala Lumpur for almost a year. Dating scene is great there. Most westerners think that is it extremely hard to meet and date muslim Malay women. That is not the case. Also you’ve got plenty of Chinese and Indian women. Many nice mixed girls too as Malaysia is melting pot of cultures. In uae or Arab countries local have final word .Dubai is overrated and very expensive been both places stayed in UAE for long anyday KL for everyday life Dubai for luxury holiday.
Dubai would certainly offer business opportunities for Nomad Capital due to the presence of Millionaires in Dubai looking to migrate away from unstable economies , high remuneration to expats and simply because it’s amongst the most visited by tourists. I left Dubai and moved to Canada in 2018, I still long to return to UAE due to high salary I earned , Middle Eastern family values, food , it’s amazing airlines , and the usual Dubai vibe.
The factor that you missed is "privacy". It would be good idea to talk about rumors that talk about spying and hidden cameras in hotels and residences there.
I like how people point the weather of Dubai as something negative 😂. I'd take 40c any day. People go to Dubai because it's warm and sunny. Rather be in Dubai than waiting for a sunny day in London.
I lived in Dubai for several years. When it was 50c, sweaty and dusty we always used to say "yup, the poms come here for the weather, because its still better than London"
It's very warm and sunny in KL though. The kind of tropical warm and sunny you get in KL is also way more enjoyable than the desolate desert warm and sunny you get in Dubai

I think Dubai has been a lot more successful in the way it has marketed itself to the international crowd. Like you say the sexy factor is very much in it's favor. Closer to home KL/Malaysia has to contend with being in the shadow of Bangkok/Singapore all the time let alone Dubai.

I think most people will always choose a city in Southeast or East Asia over other regions of the world, just because the locals have a good reputation of being friendly, smiley, nice, and have zero conflict. The cities are cosmopolitan and buzzing, the islands, beaches, jungles and mountains are stunning with endless activities. The nightlife, parties, street food, beer streets, bars, clubs, rooftops are never ending etc. People naturally at ease in Southeast or East Asia just because there are less rules, the weather is so nice, and there is no fear or crime or conflict. Generally, no one is afraid of cute little Southeast / East Asians so people are relaxed. Whereas in all other regions of the world, people are more physically imposing, there are religious and culturally differences, history of conflict between races etc. But nothing really bad with Asians.

Malaysia's neighbourhood will soon be as bad as Dubai's now that the US is interfering in it.
India is closer to Malaysia than China.
And Indonesia too
Dubai is closer to Saudia and hence easy for Umraah and Hajj.
Kuala Lampur is a lovely place to live. Dubai is so commercialized
I think you meant koala lumpa
KL would be my 1st choice, having visited both I like the friendly approach by Malays, but I’m British by birth and I feel their friendship is historical, because but excellent comparison
It's Malaysians not Malays. Malay is an ethnicity.
@@PassionPno dude,he refer it to malay.hes more specific in his statement.just accept it.
Well said, unfortunately, most people from the west associate ISIS or terrorists with Islam.
Thanks to your kind word, btw are you malaysian ?

I lived in Kuala Lumpur and in the middle east (Qatar & Saudi Arabia). Well i guess i would admit Dubai is better place to be in only if you see yourself working for a couple of years. However, Malaysia would be better in a long term stay as it is a center of South East Asia where traveling and going for short gateaway for family time is possible.I mean come you certainly have more holidays in Malaysia compare to Dubai.I remember one time we had pretty much public holidays every week for the month.
Hey how was your time in Qatar and KSA?
Kuala Lumpur is closer to the other Asian countries I like to visit.
Things i like about Dubai
a) Cheap Cars, Cheap Gas
b) Service is quick, easy and great
c) Everything is available and easily available
d) Dont' have to worry about women's safety
e) Your Kids will grow up never knowing what drugs are or ever disrespecting women
Things i would say are not so cool about Dubai
a) Getting license is a pain, if you aren't from a western country. Fines are very high for driving rules
b) Service is expensive, i mean everything is expensive
c) Hard to find casual places to just go have a drink, everything is so fancy and up n up
d) You see this vibe where you feel people are just being taken advantage off, like poor people can barely survive
e) Hot as hello, Mar to Aug is a horrible time to be there
Come to Malaysia brother you will like it 😊👍🏻
Sounds like there is a large have and have-nots gap in Dubai.
U mean april to sept
Dubai is tax free (Individual), and CGT free too. Getting a Golden visa forc5 or 10 years is easier than MM2H. No work restrictions on Golden visa whilst MM2H has.
Malaysia
(1) Malaysians are multi culture so people tolerate each other.
(2) English is widely spoken in Malaysia so language is not a barrier.
(3) KL is greener, as it is in a tropical country. You get a lot of rain but never get sand storm.
Dubai
(1) Dubai has more prestige and known as Middle East hub for business so the brand name is there.
(2) Imported food from Europe like cheese are cheaper in Dubai than in Malaysia
(3) Average income is higher in Dubai and so does the cost of living
Between Dubai and KL I would choose KL to live. Hot and dry versus hot and humid, zero versus low taxes, both are Muslim countries but Dubai does not treat its non-Muslims well in law.
Malaysia is a secular country disguised as a Muslim country
My brother left a nice government job in Dubai Electric (10+ years, subsidised housing, zero tax) and moved to Canada and started from the ground floor (night shift, shitty pay, no leave in first year). Not once has he complained about the taxes, snow or anything. Like, not a single time. You literally could not pay him to move back to Dubai. Laws of a country and what future your kids have matter a lot to people.
And the future for kids in Canada is being brainwashed into changing their gender by Trudeau's teachers then the courts taking the kids off the parent when the parent decides he doesn't want his kid mutilated
Maybe he didn't know that
Malaysia has nature(top 20 countries with biodiversity , both land and sea). And KL has a rainforest(not man-made). Dubai has many man-made stuff. I prefer nature than man-made stuff.
For a more developed and orderly city is definitely Dubai but in KL you can have more fun seeing nature and culture.
KL for living, Dubai for partying!
Thank you for your comment. It is very helpful.
It has reopened. Finally.
So, what about now? 😆
Hi Andreu, I live in Dubai, one important factor you are missing is weather…
Are you considering Dubai good weather? Hot and sticky in the extreme for half the year. I guess that's better than KL for warm and sticky all year around?
@@warrentrout you aren’t considering how hot hot is in Dubai.. it’s so hot to the point you can’t step out of your car for more than a minute
Have lived in Kuala Lumpur and spent a lot of time in Dubai. Your analysis is spot on. KL is a great hub if much of your business is in Asia.
Personally the brutal heat alone in Dubai makes it unlivable for me, so KL any day!
What about the humidity in KL?
@@LetsDoItOldSchool The gulf countries have way higher humidity in addition to the heat. Its not dry heat like some desert countries.
@@jeffb.140 Agreed! I lived in UAE for 15 years but I also sweated my a** off when visiting KL.
ABSOLUTELY 1000000000% KUALA LUMPUR
As a Martian, Arabian desert is pretty similar to my place. I love hot and dry. So, Dubai wins 👽☺️🙏🏻
KL an hour away from Bali , Bangkok , Manila , Viet major tourist destination
The free zones in Dubai have very high fees and lots of red tape. Outside the free zone, you don’t have as high fees, but you need an Emirati partner who may not invest, but will take part of your profit and if there’s a problem, you can’t dissolve the relationship. How does Malaysia compare?
Golden visa?
Fair point, As a foreigner in KL, i could'nt agree more.
I think the better comparison would be Singapore vs. Dubai.
Agreed!
I disagree based on the fact that foreigners can't live in Singapore without a work permit or owning a company that's worth over $150 million. It's not a viable hub unless you have a job there. Anyone can live in Dubai or KL indefinitely with the proper visas/permits. Singapore cannot be considered a viable hub unless a person has a job there.
living in the jail you mean?

In my fictional world, Kuala Lumpur surpasses Dubai in every way
Kuala Lumpur has alive soul compared to Dubai. All organized and modern, apparently when you spending longer time there you will feel something is lost in Dubai. Also have arab, thai, Indonesia, Vietnam, European, US/Canada, and Korea Japan
Foreigners have been kicked out of Malaysia.

Since the very beginning of the pandemic, treatment of foreigners in this country has become pretty wild. Definitely not the same country anymore. Anyhow its refreshing to stumble upon people online who actually know what they're talking about from time to time.
@Deerskin it is very unfortunate how our govt is treating foreigners now. This govt will not last very long. I can assure you come the general election they will be kicked out in 2 years time . The people are extremely unhappy over their policies at the moment and the way they handled the pandemic. This govt was not elected by the people.
A bit late to the show, but integrating a comparison of company tax and median blue collar labor's costs would be nice for people looking to create their business that involves a little bit of manufacturing.
Still waiting for Malaysia.............waiting, waiting, waiting. Living in Indonesia and the US....so Malaysia feels very comfortable for me. The prices of real estate (higher end) is much less expensive in Malaysia than Indo.

Last time I was in Dubai (2016) I had someone point a gun at me, I will never go to Dubai ever again.
Dubai is too expensive and the weather is terrible.
I have been waiting for this one. Thank you 🥂
I like how people point the weather of Dubai as something negative 😂.
One thing you didn't mention is weather. There are times of year when KL is appallingly rainy and humid.
I lived for 8 years in Dubai , it meant for Indians and Brits and locals , Dubai is not for everyone . I am planning to move to KL. I am broke and have overstay fine after my visa cancelled there is no need to come to little India. It is a nightmare. 😢

For a retiree, Malaysia or Thailand seems a better option. Penang or Mekala or even KL are nice and affordable. Who wants all the stress whrn life is short. Health care in Malaysia is also good too.
I think Dubai has been a lot more successful in the way it has marketed itself to the international crowd. Like you say the sexy factor is very much in it's favor. Closer to home KL/Malaysia has to contend with being in the shadow of Bangkok/Singapore all the time let alone Dubai.

How can you get a business visa in Malaysia and how much does it cost and for how long is a business visa, lastly are they receiptive to investment ?
I didn’t care to much for dxb was very stale and pretentious. Yes there’s a “prestige” of saying dxb as a brand but after you peel off the superficial layer theres no substance. The people there just go there to work it’s a transitory place. But the worse is just the climate it’s just overbearing to live there it’s just way to HOT! If your not there in the few months it’s cool it’s unlivable u have to stay indoors. That in itself is their hardest obstacle.
Thanks Indeed.
Dubai is a shit city. its hot, the people there are unwelcoming & each childs education costs $1500/month for PUBLIC schools. Private schools cost more. I could take you more seriously if you also included comparison on cost of living in US states. I love Alabama for example. best people, lowest cost of living with USA service levels.
I like living in Kuala Lumpur Dubai seems a bit rigid.

I would prefer KL to Dubai ... (more of a real city ) - also .. if you want to live in Dubai ,.... consider Bahrain instead, it is not as glamourous but is more laid back, and much less expensive .. when I lived in Bahrain many ppl I met who had also lived in Dubai preferred Bahrain.
As a resident of Dubai of 2 decades & familiar visitor to singapore/ KL
- Dubai should compared with Singapore for Parity
From a view point of a medium/ networth person
Decision Parameters are
- Safety
- healthcare facilities
- taxes zero in Dxb except fir 5% vat on all expense
- compare price / rentalof a high end 3 bed apt / villa
In dubai rental 40000- 60000 $ rental. Cost of buying 750k- 1mn$
- cost of a high end car like mercedes/ Bmw.etc.
You want it or not Dubai is situated in the Middle East and that implies instability and uncertainty so you are not always sure of what will happen in a month or two so there’s a price to pay for this too
Thanks for your video
Any pointers on the next KL or Dubai?
I’m looking for somewhere with good weather, multi-cultural, low-tax and business friendly
Malaysia is the great choose 👍🏻

As a malaysian, borneo has a different sets of immigration rules(autonomous).
