FROM THAT LONG AGO SUMMER OF '72 , I WAS 25 Y/O, HEADING SOON TO 26. NEVER, EVER, DID " MESSIN AROUND " SOUND SO GOOD ! RIP, BILLY PAUL. ---MJL, 77 Y/O
😂😂 Your face at that moment you paused it has convinced I have to reinvest in floofy toys to throw at the tv. The dogs will bring them back at least. And on a side note, I believe that man liked Mrs Jones spice cake 😉
While this song is about an affair, I always took it as more about the thoughts & intentions behind two people who COULD have an affair instead of the actions of two people who WERE having an affair. It seems to walk that line between fantasy & reality.
The music industry decided a long time ago that real talent needed to buried so they created c-RAP and S*"T HOP instead to tear the black community apart. JB you have to react to the "Floaters" and "Float on".
Yes, it was a real story, not about him, Billy Paul! The writers back then hitmakers of that era, used to go to this cafe to brainstorm and noticed this couple meeting alway at the same time and realize……the rest is history.
A song may have nothing to do personally with the singer. This was not written by Billy Paul so I doubt it's personal. But yes, it's about an affair, you got that right for sure!
Really? I guess that we each have a different definition of "affair", Brenda. In my way of thinking, two people who meet at a cafe every day, hold hands, make plans, and listen to the jukebox and then go home to their families aren't having an affair. Perhaps their loyalty to each of their families deprives them of something they need ~ attention, affection, love, and caring. They dream of a different future that they never act upon. It is something to think about: Can a person have an affair if they never engage in sex outside of marriage?
It was written by the hitmakers Gamble & Huff of that era, who noticed a couple, a cafe they always visited, to brainstorm and realize what was going on, and this is how the song came about.
His singing is effortless, soulful and smooth!
Voice as smooth as butter 🗣️🧈🎶 ❤
This is one of hundreds of tracks done by the magical musicians at Sigma Studios in Philly.

Listen to the music not the lyrics.
Watch the LP version. This video leaves out one verse.
