This song is intended to describe the five stages of the dying process. Richard Wright, the keyboardist of the. During his lifetime, Richard Wright, the band's keyboardist, asked Durga Mc Broom, one of the backing singers on the Pink Floyd tour, to sing this song at his funeral. I have personal contact with Durga and she confirmed it to me. But according to unconfirmed information, she was accompanied on the piano by none other than John Lord from Deep Purple.
These three are loosely following the original that Clare Torry did on the 1973 Dark Side of The Moon! Claire improvised this whole thing after starting off going ooh baby ooh baby and the Pink Floyd guys didn't like that so they stopped her and said that's not what we want. Then Claire on her own decided to make her voice like an instrument and make the sounds of an instrument and she vocalized the original On the Dark Side of the Moon into one brilliant vocalization in two and a half takes over Rick Wright's beautiful musical piece! Following that she kind of felt embarrassed and left not thinking her vocalization would ever see the light of day and it's actually become one of the most popular songs on the album!!
I hear what others are saying about Claire's version being the best. But maybe it's not. And maybe it was never intended it to be. Maybe she just wanted to be the brilliant spark that would inspire hundreds, thousands, millions of other artists to build on what she'd already done. Isn't that a better legacy?
"The Great Gig in the Sky" is the fifth track on The Dark Side of the Moon, a 1973 album by English rock band Pink Floyd. The song features music by keyboard player Richard Wright and improvised, wordless vocals by session singer Clare Torry.
The Dark Side Of The Moon album stayed on the billboard top 100 LP chart for 987 weeks. That's 19 years ! Greatest album ever made. The original Great Gig was sung by one singer Clare Tory. Miss Tory nailed it on her second try.
The first Tori was improvized....the others just reproduced best of the vibe, the "non telling " feeling and it,s even better...so sensual....😍😍😍😍...LOVE the pulse show version...❤️
Here the three singers reproduce what Clare Torry improvised for the album Dark Side of the Moon. Originally, this track was only intended to fill the remaining space on side A of the vinyl. What a great way to fill an empty space.
It was improvised during the recording of Dark side of the moon in 1973, improvised by Claire Torry.... but during pulse concert, the three back vocalists didn't improvise, mostly following the claire torry's theme.
That is the beggining, living and the ending of life IF you can put that in perspective listening to this song. Your Ladies singing this are Sam Brown, Claudia Fontaine, Durga McBroom ! Thanks
Clare was a session singer. They played the music first and next the told her there is no lyrics . She did 2 takes and started a third where she stop and said she couldn't add to it. Left thinking they didn't like it. Music by Rick Wright for a movie and the director said it was to said for what he like it.
Clare Torry improvised the the original recording on the spot. All she had to go on was David telling her to think about death. I believe she did one and a half takes, stopped and told the band that they had what they need. The first take is always the best! That performance became the template of what every artist since has tried to be faithful to, yet add their own twist to it, including Clare Torry who has never sang this song the same as her original. She too plays around with it. By the way, the blond singer is Sam Brown who was a Pop Artist in her own right. She had a hit single in the UK called "Stop" which went to #1 there. When she was offered a job as a back up singer for this series of Pink Floyd concerts she jumped at the chance to work with them!
when u know ahead of time that this woman is dying and going through the 5 stages of death.. 1 denial 2 anger 3 bargaining 4 depression 5 acceptance… her passion hits home.. amazing, emotional… amazing she is passionate.. incredible how good the ladies convey those stages without a word
The original vocal recording in the studio was fully improvised. They didn't give her much instruction. Just react to the already recorded instruments and improvise something to go with it. The live performances since then are not improvised. They try their best to come close to the original recording. Though some minor changes do creep in.
Frank Zappa also has a song with a female solo that will absolutely rip your heart out I'm too old now to remember the name but I hope you will find it
Nice reaction. I always thought this version did a good job of representing the confusion of standing in front of the Pearly Gates. Do I go in, do I stay out, back and forth until you finally relax and step on through.
LOL always great watching people see that for the first time. You have to do "Comfortably Numb" from the same live concert.(1994 Pulse) The melody and beautiful harmonies will blow you away, not to mention God's guitarist David Glimour at the peak of his career singing and blazing on guitar. They say it's the best guitar solo of all time...I happen to agree. Subscribed to see you react to it (soon I hope :) Good luck with your channel.
The original studio version was improvised; the live performances are not improvised, in the sense that they follow the original studio version for the most part.
Sam Brown... too bad she was only a one hit wonder. Love her voice. 'Stop' is still one of my favourite songs of the late 80's (or was it early 90's?). Check out 'Stay with me baby' to hear what she is capable of.
Ad lib. She never heard the music before. They told her to imagine death and dark thoughts. Took her 2 takes. She made up the song, feelings on the spot. Every time ever performed after that they try to make it sound like the original. Claire ŵas recording the same building and they invited her to give it a go
The studio recorded album of Dark Side of the Moon can never be duplicated, not even by Clare Torrey herself. It was a once in a lifetime experience. Others have made a valiant effort, but not quite there.
This ALBUM IS NOT an EXPERIMENT ! need a good pair of headphone , close your eye and listen to the words .... afterward you will be a different person and envious of us " Baby boomers !
The original was done in one take, despite the nay sayers. After Clare sued the band for royalties, as she DID write the vocals by creating them in one take and without anything to go by or help her, then she performed the song live for the band.......but she was a lot older and her voice was no longer supple enough......it was a disaster. The band did try 2 singers live but found it needed 3 vocalists live.......just too difficult for one or 2 to complete live. Is basically the 5 stages of DEATH.... to complete Time and side one of the album. Denial Fear Anger I cant remember Acceptance / peace
Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at the studio prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The doorman stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Richard Wright only wrote the music for a different project prior to the songs concept ever being thought of which was the results of Gilmour being asked if P.F. would ever do a song about religion Results are legendary.
I was at Earls Court in London in 1973 when the first performed Dark Side of the Moon live. One has to accept Claire Torry and her version was the best.👍👍
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz If it was a reaction to the original, it would be the original that would be posted up, But it isnt. Its a live cut of a twenty year old song at the time. Christ you bloody Torry obsessives are boring.
This is one song where NOTHING and I mean NOTHING can ever do Justice to the Album version. I can’t even listen to live versions, so I’m outa here…. Just wondering, why you never picked up on that, cause I’m not the only one who can only listen to the Album version. You need to go back and do another reaction, using the Album version.

It's called improvised because why? because you can't write the lyrics down
By all means react to the original , Clare Torry did it in two takes.

Sam Brown also worked with Jon Lord
No it's an orgasm.

I hate to say this but in this case, with this song, you have to listen to the original with Claire Torry. The best version ever.
I hear what others are saying about Claire's version being the best. But maybe it's not. And maybe it was never intended it to be. Maybe she just wanted to be the brilliant spark that would inspire hundreds, thousands, millions of other artists to build on what she'd already done. Isn't that a better legacy?
I saw them on this tour. To be there....a spiritual event. One of the most memorable evenings of my life.
The greatest rock band in history. And, some of the best music and lyrics ever compiled.
Song is about grief and they really did it fabulously 💕💕💕
"The Great Gig in the Sky" is the fifth track on The Dark Side of the Moon, a 1973 album by English rock band Pink Floyd. The song features music by keyboard player Richard Wright and improvised, wordless vocals by session singer Clare Torry.
She is so friggin beautiful. Amazing
This song is incredible❤Gives me chills every time❤
The original by Clare Torry was improvised and only took two takes. Every performance since then has been carefully reproduced as closely as possible.
The Dark Side Of The Moon album stayed on the billboard top 100 LP chart for 987 weeks. That's 19 years ! Greatest album ever made. The original Great Gig was sung by one singer Clare Tory. Miss Tory nailed it on her second try.

I was lucky enough to see them live in the late 70’s. Awesome show.
so many words without words, Clare was the best in Gig. No lyrics just sing. best
Here the three singers reproduce what Clare Torry improvised for the album Dark Side of the Moon.
Originally, this track was only intended to fill the remaining space on side A of the vinyl.
What a great way to fill an empty space.
You really should do the original studio version for Clare Tory's legendary improvised masterpiece.
It was improvised during the recording of Dark side of the moon in 1973, improvised by Claire Torry.... but during pulse concert, the three back vocalists didn't improvise, mostly following the claire torry's theme.
Should have went for the original studio version.
It took these 3 great lady's to do what Claire Torey did by herself. I encourage you to check out the study version.
Hi John & Lulu, I saw Pink Floyd in the 1970s on the Animal tour in the stadium in Milwaukee in Wisconsin, it was Excellent
The studio version was improvised. The live version closely follows the original.
That is the beggining, living and the ending of life IF you can put that in perspective listening to this song. Your Ladies singing this are Sam Brown, Claudia Fontaine, Durga McBroom ! Thanks
If you haven't heard the original studio version with Clare Torry, you haven't heard The Great Gig quite yet.
For me, the sam brown style was the best, it Made me fly

I am glad young people enjoy what we used to do . That was a long time ago.
This is one where you have to start with the original and the story behind it…and then take it from there!!!
The original, studio version was improvised by one woman. Clare Torry.
RIP the wonderful Claudia Fontaine. ❤
One of my favorites! 🥰🐰

The studio version is much with the original singer which none of these are.
Pink Floyd - The Great Gig In The Sky (Live, Delicate Sound Of Thunder) [2019 Remix] . i hope you like it
😂😂😂... "She's just going to hum?"... 😂😂😂
You have got the wrong version, but to me this is the best.
These 3 Ladies do an amazing job but to get the real feel of the song you need to do the album version
LOL always great watching people see that for the first time. That is a steel guitar.used a lot in Hawaiian and country music.

Did y'all receive my message about my song request yet?
The studio recorded album of Dark Side of the Moon can never be duplicated, not even by Clare Torrey herself. It was a once in a lifetime experience. Others have made a valiant effort, but not quite there.
The clue is in the title. It is about dying. Railing against it, then finally accepting. You Americans really need to feel what you are listening too.
This ALBUM IS NOT an EXPERIMENT ! need a good pair of headphone , close your eye and listen to the words .... afterward you will be a different person and envious of us " Baby boomers !
