My ranking:
1. Election
2. Nebraska
3. The Holdovers
4. Sideways
5. Citizen Ruth
6. The descendants
7. About Schmidt
8. Downsizing
I have seen all of Alexander Payne's films. Sideways is by far my favorite--- simple straight-ahead plot. Election was not originally #2 with me, but since I've seen it several times, it's really clever, the way characters appear to have one personality, but then are revealed to be very different. #3 Citizen Ruth. it might seen strange at first, but just stay with it, and see how Ruth outwits everyone! #4 The Descendants. Great scenery, which as in Sideways, becomes part of the story. Clooney has never been better. Only complaint- maybe a few too many subplots. #5 Nebraska. Basically a two-actor film, but so interesting the way father and son relate. #6 About Schmidt. Jack Nicholson is great, but the "big reveal" where he feels he made a difference in someone's life is a bit overstated. #7 The Holdovers.
Something missing in this film, plot wanders around a bit, but nice to see Payne and Giamatti working together. #8 Downsizing. Best described as "an interesting misfire" Sci-fi is not what Payne should do.
Sideways #5 is absurd.
I laughed when you said Sideways and Paul Giamatti were underrated. Because when it came out it was a huge hit and won an oscar. I guess you are just a bit too young to remember 2005 releases. Great job on this video.
Thats exactly what it is 😂. I was 4 in 2005
Sideways was a 2004 release. Filmed in late 2003.
Election is one of my all-time favorite films. Also love About Schmidt, Nebraska and Sideways. Holdovers and Descendants are ok. Saw Citizen Ruth long ago but don't remember much of it at all so I guess it didn't leave much of an impression. Downsizing was a big swing and a miss.
Interesting takes. The Descendants is by far my favorite film of all time. Its just a perfect script, perfect tone and execution. Cant count how many times Ive seen it. Thanks for the video.
