I've you enjoyed this conversation with Joe it is definitely worth checking out my chat with former FBI agent Chris Voss. We talk about FBI tactics and how they can shape routines, habits and mindset of athletes ua-cam.com/video/QKhWYhxtWmw/v-deo.html
Climate Change is one of the biggest grifts in history. Even ignoring the faked and changed temperature readings historically more carbon means healthier plants. That's it. I like the Brompton bike but hate the fascist authoritarianism he exhibits.
He's an absolute visionary that knows what a healthy, vibrant city of the future looks like. He could be a chairman of urban planning. We need a lot more like him in Government.
I’ve been riding a Brompton from past 6yrs in the most congested cities of the world, Bombay (India) it has absolutely no cycling culture or foremost the respect given to a bicycle on roads.. roads are bad.. still the Brompton works for me. I would say I’ve managed to inspire couple of people in my 6yr Cycle2work or city or weekend long rides…thanks to this small genius that Brompton is..if a Brompton can run on Bombay roads it surely is capable of anything :)
Will Butler Adams is my hero. Totally inspiring. Thank you for this great interview.
Will Butler Adams is a very sensible man!
I'm getting my first Brompton next week....and I'm so excited! I loved this and love knowing there's such great integrity at the head of the company! Thank you all!
Will’s passion for urban cycling is absolutely fantastic. I love his view on consumerism and our culture of over consumption. He needs to be advising government.
This week I passed 10,000 miles on my Brompton H6R, bought new by me in 2012, I ride recreationally on and off-road, maintain it myself, I’ve upgraded parts over the years (saddle, bars, grips, brake levers and pedals). It’s the most enjoyment I’ve ever had on a bike, prior to buying one, I’d spent circa 22yrs riding MTBs, IMO the Brompton is more enjoyable.
They ought to do a tie-in with Kinetics Cycles (Ben Cooper) and mass produce his MTBrompton: 20” rims w/2.4” Schwalbe Smart Sams, Rohloff IGH, disc brakes. Though I’d like to see a Pinion gearbox Brompton.
I second the suggestion to strengthen the collaboration with Cooper. He's got real brilliant ideas.
I own a hard tail 29'r mtn bike, a Specialized-Roubaix road bike and a Baccetta Giro Recumbent. I need to own a Brompton. Bravo, this interview.
This man deserves a knighthood, what an inspiration with so much passion for what is right for planet earth....so glad I got my T line!!
The most interesting and fun part of my day is when I'm on my Brompton commuting.
I bought a Brompton on the Bike To Work Scheme at the start of last year and it is easily one of, if not, the best thing I’ve ever bought.
I recommend them to everyone who’s capable 👍
I didn't heard of that person before and now I admire him! We need more people in power with the same vision!
P.S.: Happy Brompton owner since the last week
This interview cemented my decision to buy a Brompton. I was humming and hawing over whether to spend the money, but I'm now inspired.
Brilliant conversation!
Inspiring!
With all due respect to the great W.B. Yeats, it was actually Jiddu Krishnamurti who said: "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society." Thanks for the interview. I could not agree more,
Thanks for the correction. Glad you enjoyed it
The places he mentioned are actually nice to cycle. China is awesome to cycle. It’s Singapore which is subpar. One of brompton’s most popular city. Where drivers don’t want to share the road because they pay well over 100k for the right to drive in addition to the car. Cyclists riding for free?! Get off my road ! 😂 the government hands pamphlets to cyclists. Not motorists.
Sidewalks? Narrow. Pedestrians don’t want cyclists with their speed difference. For them it’s danger. Widen the sidewalk? Sg govt “no” it fits our standards. I’ve asked before for widening because even baby trams makes it difficult. Government:no
So then where? Fragmented park connector networks. To get there need to take public transit. Or battle the cars. Or battle pedestrians.
Everyone hates you. Adoption won’t happen unless there is a bike friendly environment.
So what’s brompton job. Just like every other brand is to lobby government around the world for safe cycling environments to which is an actual option for transport rather than leisure.
I can already feel the cycling dip. People selling off their bikes. Losing interest. When Will talks of the pandemic there is a sense of nostalgic part of it and I felt the same way. The simplicity of life which included cycling as a transport and recreation. All gone now. 😅
But yeah I would like bike companies to lobby together for real cycling lanes that can access the whole city. ❤
@28:13 is the most exciting thing in this conversation
My view on transportation is this: If your can't carry it (your ride) on your shoulder or at least tip it over, your ride is too big for one person. Ride a bike - any bike.
My Thorn Mercury often feeld like a 3 ton Lorry!
Are you going to make a six speed hub for the sea line like the P line?
Love my Brompton, but please Will, keep the 3 speed hub! So many different Brompton bikes now but they’re all going derailleur! Choice please for those of us who hate derailleurs! Bikes for people as well as cyclists!!!!!
3:00 - one common feature about areas with a lot of 100-years olds is the lack of verifiable birth certificates.
We need to change the attitude of U.K. drivers towards cyclists
29:12 "bloody disc brakes"... why are you being so harsh? I live in a hilly place, thankfully with the e-Brompton I can commute to work despite stretches of 15% incline. However, the additional weight and steep inclines do put the rim brakes to the limit. Also, you complain about the pain in the ass of punctures, yet you forget two benefits in that regard that would come with disc brakes:
1) wheels are easier to take out (with current clamp brakes, wheel won't come through if it is inflated)
2) you can use TPU tubes, which are more puncture resistant but are seldom compatible with rim brakes because of temperatures.
Don't you love the sound of wearing out your rims every time you stop ?
This is my gripe with Brompton. There such are changes, like this, I like Brompton to implement. But they seem stuck. I have a Dahon Mariner D8 and it had some features that Brompton just refuse to do. I like the way the Brompton folds and the after market products that are available but unless I need that small folded package, its just not worth 3-4 times the price without some innovation and change.
Disc brakes are fugly and beyond the maintaining expertise of the general public. Most people can fit new brake blocks to rim brakes, or have someone in the family who can. Keep Bromptons for the general public, not cyclists in Lycra obsessing about gear ratios
@@pootlingalong8928 I do lots of maintenance on bikes and replacing disk pads is way easier than replacing blocks on rim brakes. Pads just fit in, there is no way you can mount them misaligned. While with rim brakes it is a lort of fiddling after installation.
Finally your comment on gears and lycra clearly shows that you have no idea what it is like to commute by bike in a hilly environment.
A regular six speed hub for the sea lion
Convinced yes, although will is financially conflicted in the sense that private equity expect their pound of flesh when they invest in companies like Wills. This will pardon the pun drive what will says and does to some extent. I commute to work by bike every day I am not expected to drive to our sites around the east Midlands and feel better for it when I do. Just be wary of visionary CEO's pinch of salt required imo.
I will say they’re not perfect but my iPhone is 3yrs old and is still rolling. My Brommy is also 3yrs old and also still rolling.
Whats the big deal about getting a rear-tyre puncture? I can't see it.
Come with that attitude to Hilo, Hawaii where I live. The torrential month long (sometimes longer) rains would humble him and he would quickly change his mind of not needing another form of transportation lol.
I lived in Hilo for years and rode my Brompton everywhere. The weather was wonderful... PS in a few weeks I hit my 14th year of boycotting cars. Im sailing to Hilo next spring, If you'd like to take my Brompton for a test ride let me know.
@@sailingsexy Hilo town? I was more specifically talking bout the Hilo side of the island. No one rides bike outdoors year round over here. Nope! It’ll never happen. We just get way too much rain most years. This year has been a pretty dry year I will say. A fry year for us is still very wet for most. Let’s go sailing.
@@alaefarmestatesllcyes Hilo town and regularly around the island and across the saddle road. Ive ridden around all the islands, through the middle and over the tops.
Very much a marketing man. Inovations? The Electric Brompton is a turkey. Finally, 12 gears. Phew!
Why are they so expensive!
Build quality would be my guess.
9:00 he pretty much explains why
They are very expensive... I think they are built in the UK in London which must drive up the costs... They could move production to China but then you wouldnt have the build quality that makes the bikes last 20+ years... you get what you pay for maybe...
Just because something is made in China doesn’t necessarily mean it is lower quality. We get low quality products from China because most customers demand the cheapest possible prices for those goods. China excels at manufacturing products for the lowest possible price.
@@raharoldthis is true. The most expensive carbon race bikes are made in china. China is Japan level and china level. They can do anything. Depends what you want to pay.
Can’t because it’s their trump card. I think they are even moving away from Chinese parts. They can’t compete with the clones. They are good now. Arguably some are better. Better they keep a difference
I choose cars. I cycle 2-3 times a week. But I don’t live in a sardine can. 🤷♂️
Gobbledygook
Well, William, "bikes are inclusive", except when they aren't. It's not as simple as "if parents did there job, we can ride a bike" ... that does not work for folks with cerebral palsey, muscular dystrophy and similar diseases, folks with balance problems from strokes or brain injury. And then some will still need a car, so there is a place for cars, too.
Some people need trikes. Some need ebikes ... maybe they are out of shape or have lung disease or heart disease or bad arthritis. Some of those need a throttle to give them a rest when even e-assist pedaling needs a rest during the ride.
Please note, for safety while riding, Brompton assist level should be able to be changed using a thumb without removing hands from handlebars ... NOT stopping on a hill or in traffic to change it.
Had it not been for my car I’d not have been able to afford a Brompton. I love my Brompton but I absolutely hate this anti-industrial philosophy of its CEO. Not all of us live in cities.
iPhone is designed to obsolete not break
Segregated cycle lanes…… YES YES YES!
I’m sorry, can you run for president in the United States? Don’t worry about that pesky “have to be born in America thing.” Our laws are entirely fluid now. Just spent a month on the road for work. Five countries. Made the decision mid trip, will no longer travel without my Brompton. Health, fun, functionality and a reminder of how little we need even when traveling for work. My customers don’t mind if I’m sweaty. They think it’s funny/cool.
For real? Complaining about "horror" of changing a flat on a 3/6 speed Brompton? 😂🤦♂ . Ok sure first time it might look like a hard thing but it is a breeze compared to the other hub gears out there come back when you have tried to change a tube or tyre on a non folding bike with a 7/8 speed hub gear.
Yep. Removing the Brompton rear wheel is easy, just watch a video and write down the steps on a piece of paper you can keep with your puncture repair kit. Once you’ve done it a couple of times it’s a breeze. The more tricky bikes are the Dutch style sit up and beg types - and even those are ok once you’ve done it a couple of times.
A sales man talking about climate change to sell more of his bikes. yeah nah. I'm sure he drives more than he bikes.
Im a cyclist, a former competitive one..a seasoned world cycling tourist ...a motorcyclist, a former competitive one...a motorist, a former competitive one...a bicycle collector, a motorcycle collector, a vintage car and hot rod builder and preservationist.......
The bicycle is my first love. Guess what? The bicycle isnt saving the world. The delusional notion that the left has about the bicycle is nauseating.
The constant moral posturing and endless drivel isnt going to sway the momentum of the world.
Cycling is not for everyone. Once you figure this out you will enjoy riding your bike more. Give up.
