“It’a a Long Way to the top….If you wanna rock n’ roll.”…. If you’ve ever been in a rock band….truer words have never been spoken. The phrase became an autobiography of perseverance and the signature song for Ronald Belford Scott…. better known by his stage name…Bon Scott. Bon was a man who wanted to rock n roll with every fiber of his being, no matter how long it took to get there.
As a teenager, Bon had brushes with law that landed him a nine-month penance at the Riverbank Juvenile Institution. Before he entered the working class, Bon attempted to join the Australian Army, but was rejected for being “socially maladjusted." Bon Scott took whatever job he could find, just to make enough money to get by, because what he really wanted to do was “rock n’ roll."
He was a postman, a bartender, and a truck packer before he started his band, the Spektors, in 1964, as the drummer, and sometimes lead singer. In ’66, the Spektors merged with another local group, named the Winstons. The Winstons fizzled, and Bon put together his next band- The Valentines, where he was a co-lead vocalist with Vince Lovegrove.
It's hard to imagine, Bon Scott in a bubble gum pop band, but that’s what The Valentines were. Bon & his bandmates wore wide-collared shirts & bell bottoms- looking more like Herman’s Hermits and playing songs with titles like Nick Nack Paddy Wack.
After the merciful demise of The Valentines, Bon segued to a country/ blues outfit called Fraternity: Fraternity actually became a pretty hot band in the clubs of Sydney & Melbourne, so the guys decided to move to London to build an audience in Europe in ’72. When the group settled in London, there were 18 people residing in the same small house. That included wives, children, and pets. It was the kind of communal existence they lived in Australia, except there was no money coming in at all, and London was a much more expensive place to live than Sydney.
The music scene in London had changed dramatically, by the time Fraternity arrived, It was all about glam rock, and Fraternity couldn’t get arrested. The band was deeply despondent over the lack of interest. - Розваги

Saw AC/DC in Atlanta in 1983. I was in the mosh, got called out by Bryan for wearing a Pink Floyd shirt to their concert. Me being 15yrs old, took off my shirt and threw it on stage. He held it up like a banner and ran around the stage with it in the air. Signed it and had a security guy give it back to me. I still have it. A great memory.

I found a pair of women's panties in the crowd about 10 meters from the stage at the Monsters of Rock show - 4 July 1988. I threw them to Sammy Hagar who caught them and held them up for a photographer. THAT WAS THE PHOTO they put in the Houston Chronicle to describe the show the next day. Sammy threw the panties to some random person in the crowd after hamming it up for the photographer. The lineup from least to most important that day at Rice Stadium was Kingdom Come, Dokken (?), Metallica, The Scorpions, and Van Halen was the headliner.
Even though I don't have any cool stories, I did see them at Monsters of Rock in Karlsruhe Germany in September of 1984. It was an awesome lineup. The Crue, Gary Moore, Accept, Dio, Ozzy, Van Halen and AC/DC. Still have the ticket stub and a T-shirt. Those were great days bro!🤘🤘🤘

When I was in the Navy in 1980, the Australian Navy pulled into Port, and we got to drink with them, and DRINK we did, and after a brief discussion regarding just how much we LOVED AC/DC , the Aussie's broke out in song, "Its a long way to the shop, if you want a sausage roll" . What a GREAT BUNCH OF GUYS.

@@kraigpeterson3667 It would be hard for any band to sound more like the Bon Scott version of AC/DC than Krokus, especially this song. As I understand it, they offered him the job but he turned it down thinking his own band was taking off (big mistake?), then Brian Johnson was brought on board.
He was incredible.
I do play bagpipes. Every now and then I start playing these chords, and I always extract a few smiles (and cheers) from folks who aren't expecting to hear such an anthem out of nowhere. Bon Scott was unique in many ways, but we should all be proud of what he did for music.

@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980Imagine walking up to a piano and having to tune it every time, then having to tune it every 30 minutes. That’s a start to understanding the challenge of bagpipes. That said, reading bagpipe sheet music is far easier as it is only one note at a time.

RIP Bon Scott and RIP Malcolm Young. With Malcolm's passing in November 2017, Angus is the only remaining founding member of ACDC still in the band.

This song was my introduction to ACDC and it definitely foreshadowed the fantastic rock about to come. Love Brian but Bon is the MAN. What a story professor!

When I started college in 1989, one of my new friends was the World's Biggest Fan of AC/DC. I didn't really know much of their music at the time -- only the radio hits, really -- but thru him, I came to love it like he did. Anyway, when I first really started listening to AC/DC, I couldn't tell the difference between Bon Scott's voice and Brian Johnson's! Of course, the more I listened, the more embarrassingly obvious the difference became and the easier it was to tell them apart. Honestly, I'm not sure which voice I like better! They're both so amazing, it's really hard to pick a favorite!

Greatest rock and roll song in Australian history. As an Aussie teenager of the 70s, Bon Scott will always be a legend.
Even in those old black and white clips of The Valentines, Bon oozed charisma. There will never be another frontman like Bon. Good on the rest of the band for respecting Bon's wishes and hiring Brian, and good on Brian for respecting Bon's memory by not performing "It's A Long Way To The Top" for so long.

The Australian version of the High Voltage album had a different cover. It had a cartoon of a dog pissing on an electric sub-station.
Also, the song High Voltage wasn't on this album, it was on TNT.
AC/DC put out a compilation of these two albums (mostly TNT) and it became the international version of High Voltage.
Friend of mine has a story about a time she met Bon way back in the day in Melbourne, when she was a teen. She had a broken leg and was feeling very down at not being able to do all the things her other friends were doing, it was school holiday break. Well, Bon signed her leg cast and chatted a bit, and she’s still got that plaster somewhere! I really miss him. Thank you for this Professor, thank you so much❤️

I normally hate the sound of bagpipes. But Bon Scott rocked the bag pipes so incredibly well that it’s a perfect addition to their master-rock-piece! What a brilliant musician and showman he was to have learned how to play the bagpipes that quickly with that much panache!

Until you hear the pipes playing, it was just another rock song. But the moment that air was expelled, it is sublime notification that IT HAD BEGUN! Life would NEVER be the same!
The sound that literally kills me is TAPS! I lost a 22 year old uncle when I was 2-1/2. Uncle Boyd had served in the air force during Vietnam and learned he had epilepsy. He was honorably discharged and sent home. Within a week of returning home, he had a seizure while driving and collected a tree, dying on impact. TAPS cuts through me like a knife and takes me back to his funeral Dec 6, 1970...53 years ago today. He would have been 23 on December 8th. This put the final nail in my grandmother's life as she was never the same and passed away 10 years later.

The story of how Brian became the frontman of AC/DC fascinates me so much because it was practically fate.
Before Bon Scott joined up with the Young brothers to form AC/DC he was in a band called Fraternity.
Brian was in a band called Geordie who had a couple of top 40 hits in the UK.
When Fraternity was touring Great Britain they had a gig where they were opening for Geordie. When Brian and his fellow band mates arrived they suited up and performed their set. Well, midway through a song Brian collapsed on his back and was flailing around; apparently having been struck by appendicitis.
Unbeknownst however to Brian, Bon had been watching the set and when Brian began kicking and flailing Bon was over the moon because he thought it was part of his act. Brian’s stage antics reminded Bon of his heroes, James Brown and Little Richard.
Later that same night, Geordie joined Fraternity on their tour bus and had a couple of drinks then went their separate ways the next day.
Sometime later Bon joined up with AC/DC and one day mentioned offhand that he wasn’t impressed with the rock scene in Britain when he toured there previously, EXCEPT for this one band with a wild singer named Brian Johnson who reminded him of Little Richard. He was really impressed by that Brian fella. And Bon Scott didn’t like too many singers.
Angus is frequently misquoted. He never said that Bon told them “If anything should happen to me, seek out Brian Johnson.”
Bon was a fan. He casually mentioned a wild singer who impressed him. That’s it.
Anyway…flash forward to 1980.
Bon tragically passes away from alcohol poisoning.
Malcom and Angus remain undecided about whether or not they should continue the band. They’d just broken through with Highway to Hell, but they weren’t superstars…yet.
They decide to continue.
A random fan from Cleveland, Ohio managed to contact their camp. The fan who followed the scene in Britain suggested a guy whom he believed would be a good fit for the band:
Brian Johnson.
Malcolm and Angus Young were thrown, “Wasn’t that the bloke Bon said he was impressed with all those years ago?” They recalled.
Then their producer Mutt Lange also suggested a guy he’d known of on the scene…a man named BRIAN JOHNSON.
The name kept coming up from two random sources so Angus and Malcolm knew then that they had to find this Brian and audition him. Especially since the couple people they’d been auditioning didn’t have that spark.
Brian, meanwhile…had been living with his parents in his native Newcastle and pretty much retired from music. Geordie wasn’t going anywhere except for clubs so he’d opened his own auto body shop.
One day he got a call from an Eastern European woman who told him that a particular band wanted him to come to audition.
The woman was hesitant to name the band but eventually relented and told Johnson that it was AC/DC, whom he’d heard of because they were developing a big following.
However…Johnson didn’t want to drive six hours from Newcastle to London because he was thirty-two, had his own business, was semi-retired from showbiz and was convinced he wouldn’t get the gig because AC/DC was a whole other level. So he declined.
But, as fate would have it, a friend of his who did some work for Monte Python called about thirty minutes later to offer Brian some work. A commercial for Hoover vacuums.
The gig would pay him £350 plus residuals, but it was in London. However since it was a paid gig, Brian quickly accepted and then called back the mysterious woman to tell her that he’d be in London the following Monday and would be able to do the audition.
Monday came and Brian left the studio having done the Hoover jingle and collected his money. It was late in the afternoon and he found himself stuck at a crossroads:
He could drive a mile down the street and meet with AC/DC, a gig he’d never get. Or…he could drive the 5-6 hours back to Newcastle because he had to get home and open up his shop early in the morning.
Brian chose to go to the audition.
After a warm welcome from the band, they performed a few songs with Brian.
Almost immediately Malcolm got goosebumps; magic was in the air.
Angus and Malcolm were caught in Brian’s spell. They NEVER wanted the audition to end. It was like love at first sight.
But Brian had to leave, despite his reluctance to do so since he felt the magic too.
A few days later the band called him back and the rest is history.
Thank you for honoring Bon Scott with this episode. Such a phenomenal singer.

@ProfessorofRock walk all over you, little lover, hells bells was the first song that introduced me to ac/DC the new local f.m station chez 106.9 fm played it every hour on the hour the opening day for chef 106.9 they played all the good new stuff so many I can start naming stuff do something about wall of voodoo Mexican radio song
AC/DC is such a great band. Great musicians. Malcolm’s solid rhythm playing and the underrated Phil on the drums. He kept it simple and he kept it grooving. The loss of Bon was so shattering at the time.

Bon Scott, I remember how hated ACDC was by those whose "moral job " it was to care for and "illuminate" the youth of the day. That was so huge in their success for notoriety! Now, I stand up for ACDC, a working man/woman's band! 🤘🙏❤❤
I don't remember that in Australia. Molly Meldrum who was the most important music media personality in the country gave ACDC all the support he could.

When I was in high-school in the 80s only burnouts liked them.
Bon was so good. I was in junior high the first time I heard Highway to hell. One of my classmates brought in the album on an 8 track player. He played it all day. I was hooked. That voice. It just stops you in your tracks.
Powerage is my favourite bon Scott era AC/DC album and has 2 of my all time favorite bon Scott songs in sin city and down payment blues I love all of the bon Scott era but those 2 songs is everything that made me a bon Scott fan loud, proud and defiant

@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 what also makes them fantastic is the twin attack of Malcolm and Angus Young on the furious guitar intros and cliff Williams and Phil Rudd's thunderous bass and drum playing coming in to drive it home I guess why I'm more a fan of the bon Scott era is the music had a little more aggression an swagger to it now I do enjoy the Brian Johnson era to especially from back in black to the razor's edge
Brian Johnsons book talks about him meeting Bon when he was in Fang one rainy night letting him into their hotel to stay dry but not realizing it was him until many many years after Brian joined AC/DC. Its an interesting story

The Pooraka Hotel is now the Bridgeway Hotel, it's in South Australia if any aficionados are ever interested in seeing the place Bon first jammed with Acca Dacca, though it has been very updated and modernised since 1974. My Dad has some stories about AC/DC, as he booked them for some social events back in their early days, along with other bands and singers of the day.

Back in the mid-seventies my Dad and his ex-wife used to run a clothing business, but he would do bookings for clients on the side for social events, and one of the available bands doing these gigs would be AC/DC. My Dad is a huge rock fan, and tried to book them whenever they were available.
My Dad always speaks glowingly of the band members, especially citing Bon as being a 'top bloke', but Angus he had a little trouble with, he was very young and 'rowdy' back then. He once jumped up on the bar, very drunk, at one of these events and proceeded to dance across it. My Dad had be called up to help take him down and escort him out.
That's the one story that comes to mind right now, I'll have to ask my Dad for a few more if he has them. (He's met and hung out with quite a few of the mid-seventies Australian bands and singers, my Dad's favourites include Glenn Shorrock of the Little River Band and Ross Wilson (Daddy Cool/Mondo Rock.) )
We could have visited there last summer!
Got to see AC/DC in 1979 just before Bon passed away. One of my first concerts. The show was in Reno Nevada and before playing Sin City, Bon said “This is you, Reno!” 😁

Cliff started playing the opening bass line, with a dim spot lighting him up. Then Malcom as he joined in. Then Phil and Angus as the song revved up, and finally Bon as he began to sing the opening line. Pretty cool way to start the show. 💪🏼

@@ProfessorofRock You Shook Me All Night Long... Takes me back to my senior year of high school, when I was able to see the cheerleaders practice their routine to this song from my Econ class. The intro is in my top 3 of all time!
My fourth most listened to artist on YT this year.
The closest would be "Ride On", even though it's a blues number, or "Love Song", which is the most sugary AC/DC were.
Nice to see you finally doing some old AC/DC stories! Your opening info is a bit off though... They weren't playing instrumentals, necessarily, they were practicing/warming up while waiting for their singer, Dave Evans, who was late to the gig. Bon joined them for the warm up since he had been listening to them for a while and knew their songs (they were mostly doing covers at the time anyway) and they decided they liked his attitude better than Dave, who was into the "glam" scene. So when Dave finally showed up just minutes before they were supposed to take the stage, they told Dave to shove off and Bon filled in for the gig. At first, they caught a lot of flak from the glam fan girls that liked Dave, but they didn't care... they knew Bon had something special.

@@stevestrohacker8436 Over the last 20+ years I've watched documentaries and read articles and interviews... all that I could find... having to do with my favorite band. I don't recall if there was any one particular source for that exact story, but it's what I've put together from the information I've gathered. So, I can't swear that it's 100% accurate, but it's as close as I can get considering the amount of drugs and alcohol involved in the music business... LOL

This band helped me get through the years of music being played that made me sleepy, they Rock, especially when He was the lead singer, but Brian has done an excellent job also!!
One of my favorite AC/CD songs. The bagpipes and the feel just make this song great.

I was fortunate to see AC/DC twice as a kid:
"Highway to Hell" tour and the
"Back in Black" tour. To have seen both Bon and Brian sing lead, I'll never forget.
Amazing nights.

Great video Adam! Any dedicated musician will relate to those words. I’ve been in bands since I was 14. Even traveled in one in the later 70’s. Now 67, and still playing in a band with my friend when we were 14. Over 50 years. It surely is a long way to the top, but we still love our Rock n Roll!

I have the American version and the Australian version of “High Voltage”… I feel very fortunate to have seen AC/DC w/Bon Scott three times. Great shows I will remember forever. Probably could never afford an AC/DC concert today. That’s a shame.

Brian has never been able to replace Bon. Bon was a great frontman and a force of his own.
Im not sure he ever tried to What I do know though is that without Brian ,we may have never had ACDC for as long as we have. So for that Im very grateful to him
It's my favorite acdc song. It took me a lot of time figuring out that the acdc songs i loved were singed by bon scott.. dont despite malcom, but scott was such a storyteller.. jail break, whole lots of Rosie, .. rip, my friend. Your contribution, tho rock is exponential!👍👌✌️👊♥️🤟

Over the years I have heard multiple stories about how Bon joined AC/DC. I have heard multiple version of Bon meeting or seeing Brian Johnson before his death. Multiple versions by the band themselves on what the knew or didn't know about Johnson prior to Bon's death. Multiple stories about the way Bon died in that car. So whatever your told about this great band, just remember history changes over time.
Going by a Vince Lovegrove, he recommended Bon to the Angus and Malcolm as they had just fired Dave Evans and didn’t have a singer. Bon was there to audition live and was not a random in the audience.

I love AC/DC. My first cassettes that I ever bought, were April Wine: Stand Back, and AC/DC: Highway to Hell. I have never have had the chance to see AC/DC live....but I hope they tour next year.....then I will finally get to see them.

Bon! Got to see them so many times in Melbourne Australia in the 70’s as a teenager. He will always be their frontman to me, have never wanted to see them without him. He had so much charisma and really liked the ladies (we never went backstage even though we could have) always had a naughty twin his eye. Brian is not for me and I can certainly tell the difference with their voices. Miss Bon so much still.
Growing-up in Melbourne, Australia, we young Acca Dacca fans sang, "It's a long way to the SHOP if you want a sausage roll".

Bon was in a hospital where he was visiting two separate girls, both unknown to each other, who were both giving birth to his kids at the same time. At the end of the day, Bon had the biggest balls of them all!!!

Bon Scott was truly an amazing vocalist. Never thought someone could possibly carry/ front the band, let alone carry it forward, after his passing. And then- Brian happened. A miracle. But I do believe that even though Brian's voice is so similar, with that roughness, I have always thought Brian had a more melodic sound in his voice.

I'm all in on Bon. That voice was a force to be reckoned with. Brian Johnson just doesn't hit the same to. Like it's almost forced. Bon's was natural and raw AF. Every time I tell an AC/DC fan this they look at me like I'm crazy. 😂😂😂

This has been one of my favorite songs since I personally discovered it. I felt that struggle in my bones, and I always saw it as you described it. Yes, there are difficulties when trying to reach for the stars. people stealing from you, harming your efforts, but at the end of it all, anyone wanting to reach for the stars MUST push through all of those challenges and climb further than is safe, and believe so much to be willing to take that risk of failing. Only then is the true measure of oneself realized. AC/DC has been one of my favorite bands as a result. Songs like Big Balls which make us laugh, songs like Let There Be Rock, which inspired greatness in other bands (whether they admit it or not). songs like Thunder Struck which have been covered in completely different genres! AC/DC has a lot to be proud of, and I thoroughly enjoy their amazing works! Thank you for sharing!
Sometimes guys live so hard life itself becomes too dangerous. The 60’s & 70’s were a wilder time, Bon had more passion and talent than reason. Hard to believe it’s been almost 44 years since he died. Thanks Adam

It's one of the greatest rock videos of all time as well. The band playing this song on the back of a flatbed truck driving thru the middle of Melbourne, Australia is just crazy... A band named" Nantucket" from NC had a few minor hits during the 80s, put out a blistering cover of this song...
Scott had Mercury (your voice) at the same angle in the sky as Pluto (power and generational fit) .
Both planets were in Leo at the time of his birth. Leo is the quintessential sign of the Rock n Roller. Put simply he's one of the most strident voices in rock n roll

Bon was always a kind of mystery to me. He clearly based much of what he did on preceding singers like Robert Plant. However, he had something different to just about everyone that can't be pinned down 50 years after he was with us.

Will always LOVE, LOVE, LOVE AC/DC...Probably the band with the most songs played in all kinds of Colliseums, Arena's and other venues having Competitive Sports of all times. My son was a naturally athletic person and elected to quit Football and Baseball in High School for 'Robotics Club'. Though a bit sad with his decision, I was awed when his team went to National Meets and AC/DC rocked the Venues like it was a NCAA Basketball Tournament. Needless to say...The Robotics Competitions led to a career and he is now a Coach for Sports as well as Robotics for kids of all ages and he takes the skills and love of music including AC/DC everywhere he goes. THUNDERSTRUCK is always rockin' his Home Shop and when the wind is just so...We can hear it blasting at least a mile down his road.
Hi Prof, great story. Saw the next version of AC/DC with all the young’s in Sydney on Bon’s anniversary of his passing they ran images of Bon through the for those about to rock. One of the most memorable of concerts.

Bon Scott was one of a kind.
Not only was he a phenomal singer but he was a great songwriter as well.
He had a way with words like no other.
I've always loved that people usually complain about how loud bagpipes are, but that loudness was perfect enough to be heard over the amplifiers and drums.
Love this song so different with the bagpipes. You should check out the YT video of Rockin 1000 in Italy version of this. Brilliant (Rockin1000 was a project in Italy with 1000 musician to get The Foo Fighters to play at their local stadium)

It worked! after that they got together to perform a concert of their own at the same stadium playing rock classics including Smell Like Teen Spirit, Rebel Rebel and Long Way To The Top, complete with bagpipes.

I saw ACDC play, with Bon, back in 75, in Australia, at the opening of a shopping mall a few blocks from my house.
The place was packed. I was 15. Never forget it.
Hey Professor, I saw ACDC Back in Black concert in Lincoln, Nebraska in September 1980. Best concert I've been to...ever. I remember Brian putting Angus on his shoulders and walking the perimeter of the Pershing auditorium floor while Angus was doing a solo. The show was the greatest I've ever seen. I have three 9:45 daughters but if I would have had a son at least one of them would have been named Angus or Malcolm.
I was privileged to see them in free concert 1975 in Dandenong Victoria Australia. Just Jeans had a promo on at the time if you asked for a poster in store you got a free ticket to the show. First track they played was “Baby please don’t go.” Loved them ever since.

The perfect lead singer for the group. As a teenager I loved AC DC. I wasn't sure about Brian Johnson replacing Bon but he turned out to be the right one. I still listen to them. I enjoy all their albums

Saw AC/DC in concert Cairns Australia November 1996. It was awesome.
