- The Marine Corps pauses to reflect on the passing of Medal of Honor recipient retired Sgt. Maj. John L. Canley. He passed away May 11 in Bend, Oregon, with his family at his bedside.
Sgt. Maj. Canley was born on December 20, 1937, in Caledonia, Arkansas. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1953 and retired in 1981 as a sergeant major. He deployed on three combat tours to the Vietnam War and served as a rifle platoon leader, company gunnery sergeant and company first sergeant.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2018 for his actions in 1968 during the Battle of Hue City, Vietnam.
“The actions in the face of danger Sgt. Maj. Canley took are incredible and remarkable,” said Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Troy Black. “Sgt. Maj. Canley was a leader and a warfighter who undoubtedly contributed to the battles won in Vietnam. His first priority was and has always been his Marines - a true example of Semper Fidelis. I’m saddened by the loss of such a great Marine, yet I’m grateful for the legacy he established for generations of warriors.”
His legacy will live on through the USS John L. Canley (ESB-6) currently preparing for its christening scheduled for June 25 in San Diego.

Thank you ❤️
God Bless you
RAAAAAAH!!!!
He saved my dads life. I've heard numerous stories of his bravery. After 30 yrs in law enforcement and being a combat marine etc, my father is impressed by basically nothing... and isn't a big talker. But I've heard multiple stories about this man my entire life. How he lifted my shot dad (who was a big man) up onto a tank "with his arms straight out", how he walked around as if bullets weren't flying, etc. My dad went on to serve his community for decades. Retire. Has 3 children and 7 grandkids.. And much more. Thank to this man. My dad has said repeatedly he's never seen anyone like Canly in his entire life.
When one marine falls, another is born.
It's a Virtous Circle. Once a Marine always a Marine. Semper Fidelis...👍
Old Marines never die we just fade away 😇
RIP, My Dearest and Best Friend.
Johnny, you were larger than life. You were a man of integrity, kindness, warmth and decency. Your strength, positivity and focus motivated me. I trusted and I respected you. You were an honorable man and a devoted partner to me and to my children. I will honor your memory.
Johnny, Papa, we will never stop loving you. You left your mark with us!
Firstly, I remember how much of yourself you gave to me and to my children. You made me the woman I am today. Thank you.
I didn't realize it 35 years ago, but God placed you in my life when he did. Nothing and no one, not even death, can change that.
Secondly, you were like a father to my daughter from the age of 3 to the age of 39. Then you grandfathered her two daughters and my younger daughter. You were always there. You never missed a report card, birthday or holiday. My children miss their "Papa". I miss you.
Our hearts are broken. It's painful to write this! I will see you again in heaven, Johnny Lee. I love you. I will cherish your memory and celebrate your December birthday every year with the girls.
Rest now J Lee.
From a VERY proud Marine brat, semper fidelis to the sgt major ,I am sorry for your loss but honored to have had him serve our country
I had the great privilege of meeting this man when i was in the Corps. He had an aura about him that is hard to describe but we all could feel we were in the company of greatness. They taught us, and i believe this, we stand on the backs of giants, he is a giant. God bless and Semper Fi Marine.
At Heavens gates, he will meet his fellow Marines! God Bless Him!
Semper Fi Sgt. Major Canley.
The Sergeant Major cared about his people. Very important and the men can sense it. When they mess up and he disciplined them, they understood it was for THEIR benefit, not his enjoyment. The man sounds much like my Father, 1st Lt Ted Blackwell in WW2 and prior. He always took care of his people. He told me if I enlisted, to always see to it that those under my command were watered, fed, sheltered, and medical needs taken care of. Never take care of your needs first. Take care of your people, and they will take care of you.
Amazing man. You can hear the admiration in the voice of the men speaking of him.
I am humbled to have heard about the Sergeant Major. Can understand why his men loved him and worshiped the ground he trod. Greater love has no man than he will sacrifice his life for another ✝️
Thank you Marine. Others now have your back. God bless you.
I never met you Sgt Maj. I can say that tons of Marines respect you for your actions on and off the battlefield, me included. I hope some day to meet you in Heaven. Semper Fidelis!

Marines are heroes but Sgt Maj Canley epitomized heroism, bravery, gallantry, exemplary courage, he was a Marine's Marine, the very best an NCO could be! Sir, to just say thank you for all you did doesn't even seem adequate, but thank you and I salute you sir, continue to Rest In Peace!
Here’s the standard officers and NCOs should diligently and unfailingly aspire to attain.
Rest in Peace Sergeant Major Canley. Thank you for your service. Semper Fidelis.
And we, ALL, love him, honor him and salute him! May he Rest In Honored Glory! A true hero, may we bask in the glow of his memory!
Rest in peace brother! Thank you for your service. Semper Fi
From the niece of an Army Infantryman who served as a tunnel rat during Vietnam, and a Navy man who served off the coast of Vietnam my thoughts are with Sgt. Maj. John L. Canley's family and friends during this difficult time and I hope they are comforted by the fact he is now at peace and waiting for them at Heaven's Gates when their time comes.
Fair Winds and Following Seas, Marine. Semper Fi.
My prayers to the Sgt Majors family. It was a privilege, an honor, and a blessing to have him as my Battalion Sgt Maj. I'm unable to gather the words to describe him, for I feel words are too shallow to do him justice. Maybe the best way is just saying he was a Marines Marine. Semper Fi Brother, RIP

He was what a leader is, was, will ever be. Today I’m sure that not one leader NCO or Officer can come within a hundred miles of his leadership skills. It’s pretty sad but true.
My dude!

Hey marines /seaman if you got rid of tanks you shold get rid of jets because by your logic the navy can provide air power and so can the army provide tanks
+ more spare change for carols and cups for drinking the blood of your enimes

Don't make them like this anymore! real man!
