    In 12v BMW engines it's common to use a combination of a stainless fire oring in the block and an OEM composite headgasket. It makes for a good combination of OEM reliability in sealing the wet deck and performance head sealing with the oring system.

    you can have the best of both worlds, we use a mls gasket with al/bronze fire rings. (custom edm cut mls gasket to suit the rings) abit like a athena composite deal, but using al/bronze gas rings instead. seals everything.. no combustion leak, and no oil/water leaking either. literally blow the side of a 2j block apart and still have an intact fire ring.
    abit expensive, but its a multi use for the life of the engine gasket solution.
    have held 2500whp in a full wet 2jz. retaining factory water pump and radiator. no leakage of anything. if you must have a wet deck, this is the ultimate solution.

      I'm sticking with the OEM stock MLS HG on my 2JZ build. Have seen many hold over 1000whp with no issue. Fire ring might be good for someone whos building a 2000whp car but for most the stock MLS is the best option.

    • @Dave-but-why
      @Dave-but-why 2 роки тому

      @@tadda6282 yes. Stock gasket is fine for 1000 engine HP. But since we are in there, doesn't hurt to future Proof it.

    I had used an mls-cometic back in the late 90's .... when i rebuilt the engine, they were on back order for several months so i had to go back to oem composite. But it was funny that the oem composite had the crush rings built in where the pistons were and all the coolant holes.

  • @TheCarPassionChannel

    What about the head gaskets that use thin fire rings, but don't require block machining? That's what I use on my engine, it seems like the best choice since the rest of the gasket is composite with rubber sealing rings for oil and coolant, but still gives a great seal at the combustion chamber. The only downsides in my opinion are they cost double what an MLS does, and the head has to be shaved about 0.005" every time you pull it due to the grooves caused by the rings.

      Yea i just used the oem nissan hg, composite with the fire rings over each piston and all the coolant holes ...

    Factory Ford Boss 429 Engines were dry decked with individual registers for separate fire rings and cooper ring seals for oil and water. Pain in the butt to install and assemble engine. Jon Kaase solved this issue when he introduced modern technology Boss '9 cylinder heads for 429 and 460 385 series Fords. Conventional head gaskets can now be utilized.

    MLS gaskets have been around for years. Many older engines had them. They knew how to machine accurately before WW2. The WASP aircraft engines didn't even use gaskets to seal the two halves of the case.

I read that a RWD needs a left and right head gasket, and a FWD it does not matter which way is installed, meaning the two smaller coolant slots on both ends are opened. Is this accurate? Another downside to a copper head gasket is that the sealing spray is ultra carcinogenic. It's cancer in a spray can. I use a respirator and spray them outside.
    In all other ways, I like copper. I've machined them myself on a custom application where nearly anything else would have been impossible.
