      In real life, they worked together. I used to be a rock writer and I know someone who was in that band of writers. The kid is actually Cameron Crowe who was a rock writer at Creem magazine in his teens. Lester Bangs worked there too. So they knew each other. I guess that wouldn't have made as good of a movie. Anyway, bit of trivia. :-)

    There's an important message later in the movie. When the band found out that William wrote the unadulterated story of them, the singer, Jeff Bebe was ranting about how he knew he couldn't trust the writer. He was very focused on the perception of being cool among fans, to the point where the real virtues flew over his head. He belted out "is it that hard to make us look cool!" Russell giving his take on the whole thing saying "maybe we just don't see ourselves the way we really are". The irony is that William sees himself as being uncool and idolizes Stillwater, yet they are having the very same feelings that he is. As it turned out, the fans and the Directors at Rolling Stone adored the band for having a human element in their dynamic, making them interesting; and cool.
    This moment seemed to strip the concept of being cooler or better than someone else. We're all cool in different ways. William sure didn't have anything about him that made him not so cool; he was writing for Rolling Stone. How cool is that - very.
    The Lester Bangs's (Hoffman) quote about sharing the true currency with someone who's uncool, means that when you strip away ego and social hierarchy, you truly connect with another person on a profound level. We're all in this game of life in the _bankrupt world_ together.
    Very good movie; one of my favourites and close to my heart.

      "The Lester Bangs's (Hoffman) quote about sharing the true currency with someone when you're uncool"
      It's this that's what I hear in that passage. So I feel the message changes with it.

    • @sisbrawny
      @sisbrawny 10 років тому +2

      Miguel Vilhena I'm not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate?

    • @Jeustful
      @Jeustful 10 років тому +9

      I believe that what he says is that "the only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you're uncool".
      The sincerity and honesty, the kindness, when you are humble, and not brimming with pride.
      I believe the message is to be true to one self. And that is easier when you feel uncool, as you don't have to deal with the oversized ego. But a person can also do it when he/she is popular. It is possible to be a great human being almost always. :)

    • @sisbrawny
      @sisbrawny 10 років тому +1

      Miguel Vilhena Thanks for the clarification. That's pretty much what I said in my comment. It's good to see others are having similar thoughts. The quote surely is a good one.
      I like what you said about someone who's successful/popular can be grounded too.

    • @Jeustful
      @Jeustful 10 років тому +3

      Yeah, but the original line is a little different, it's not "with someone who's uncool". This expression changes the idea presented in that line in the script. The subject that executes the action (shares) is the one refered as uncool in the movie, possibly also the target of the action, as english is dubious about the second grammatical person.
      Because if the expression was "with someone who's uncool", it would be dabbling probably about what is commonly called as compassion for the less fortunate, being kind for the one's that are/have less. And that is not what we see in that quote.
      You should change it, if you think I'm right, so that there is no misconceptions created by that oversight.

    This scene really resonated with me. Makes me sad that I will never watch a new Phillip Seymour Hoffman movie in cinema

    RIP Hoffman. You were great in Capote, Big Lebowski and The Hunger Games franchise. We'll miss you.

      Yeah, I thought he was great, too (don't forget the part of Dusty he played in Twister). Did you know Lenny Bruce died in a similar fashion? So sad to lose him.

    God he was a great actor. Totally uncool looking yet completely vulnerable in all the characters he played.

    Great performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman in this film, so sad to hear of his passing at such a young age.
