    Wow, compared to all the other cars, the 918 just attacks the switchbacks and sweepers with so much more aggression and verve! Guess that what another 300-400hp and nearly a million bucks gets you. Wish they had the P1 and LaF to compare it with.

    Oh my god that 918 is fast. I had no idea it was THIS fast. 6 seconds quicker than the nismo? On a track this small that's a huge gap. But that camaro is very impressive. For a $75k car to rival an f12 and a nismo is awesome.
    But Gah damn that 918. . . It's a monster.

    Watching K. C. in the 918 vs. Aaron in the Viper, Aaron is busting his butt trying to keep it on the track, where K.C. is almost out for a Sunday drive! He's working nowhere near as hard and turning a WAY faster lap.

    What I'm most impressed by is the lack of steering correction. Guess that rear wheel steering is really working, along with other things.

      possibly the equipment on board (gps, laptop and stuff) or sth. else in the doorbox.
      i had sounds like these often when driving my old shitty golf 3 "fast" (110mph) on the autobahn and the surface was not very pleasing. some plastic shit in the doors always started to jingle.

    The grip is incredible. Even if the Nismo has the same HP I don't think it would be as fast on this track. Actually if any of these cars had the same HP it wouldn't be this fast on this track. Maybe in a straight line?

    The steep pricetag aside, this is one of the more futuristic sportscar that money can buy.
    The interior looks incredibly cool
    The blazing speed is there combined with the clever AWD and endless acceleration from the hybrid powertrain, this is one lethal combination to bring down lap times.
    One thing I wonder though, how will the P1 do? I think it should do better given its better downforce configuration and lighter weight. It does have a small battery, so full power may not be available throughout the lap.

      Great points and a good mix of opinions I will say. Most are calling the 918 AWD which it's not.More like 4WD to a specific speed. The front and rear aren't connect by shaft and diff. Front E-motor only helps drive the front wheels. Front and rear only share battery usage and power. From what I have gathered front E-motor cuts at 165mph rendering it to 2WD. I original read front motor cut at 145 but it seems all has changed.
      P1 battery charge claims seem to come of a lot. You are right to some degree P1 isn't really at full power. Reason being peak torque is cut from 723 to 664 ft-lbs.Based off a video I have seen of P1 power curve.From 0 rpm's E-motor jumps in full power mode till 4000 rpm's at max throttle. Once there peak torque is cut to 664 because turbos are now at full lit.Only after 7000 rpm does E-motor go into full power till redline or 8250. This is due to overall engine torque decreasing. Like Mclaren says torque fill. So basically at max throttle engine rpm's will never drop below 4000 rpm's allowing the E-motor to conserve overall battery power. Of course in slow or tight turns E-motor will adjust usage to the rpm levels.
      The P1 only regens off throttle or under braking. No brakes are involved at all.E-motor is programmed to recover electrical power and send excess torque for batteries to keep power up.
      The battery system is smaller then 918 but LaFerrari much smaller and lighter then P1.

    This cheap, crappy video is way overexposed. It lacks proper graphics like RPM and speed. It lacks multiple camera angles and drone shots. Geezus, guys, can't you do better than making the guy in the accounting department slap his GoPro in the back of the car and hit record? How about some comments from the driver? Watch Motorweek's and even Motor Trend's videos and get schooled. Do the car justice.

      I think it was a nice concept. Drive the hell out of it and see the lap time. Hear the car, from the inside and see the accouterments. I too like all of the data(I could watch tire temps, g-loads and pedal actuating all day) but this is a nice way to see basic differences between many nice cars.

      Flat-plane crankshafts make V8's sound like that, commonly found in ferrari V8's 360, 430, 458.

      ***** The concept of the V8 engine originates from the LMP2 RS Spyder race car. It basically means Porche went full beast mode on this one. Ive heard that the cameras dont do it justice and neither do the stiffled ehausts. Look up that LMP2 car and hear what it could potentially sound like.

      I am sure that if someone wanted to make an aftermarket non-muffled/baffled exhaust it would be just as loud. Emissions prevent Porche from doing that themselves

    Great job Car & Driver on another awesome Lightning Lap! I'm a subscriber and have enjoyed this event every year. -- The 918 showed just how incredible it really is. I hope you can convince McLaren next year to give you the P1, I would really like to see how it compares. I think it can give the 918 a run for its money!

      I was wondering the same thing. In high G or high stress corners it was making a sound that I could not figure out. But being that it is hybrid with all kinds of different systems running it may be something as simple as the stability control actuating or clutches working to put more power to one wheel over another or something to that effect. I hope it's not the sound of structural stress. That would be bad.

    I don't know, all I heard in the GTR vid was tire squeal. Tire squeal galore. But still, the GTR is the fourth fastest ever in Lightning Lap history.

    I love these vids, but they miss half of the picture. I have a $300 mic on my $500 superzoom that pics up everything, in stereo. It's really easy to post edit in separately recorded sound and i wish they would do that with these cars so we could really hear what they sound like.

    Proper Fast! Not Knocking the Nismo GT-R at all, but this car is better looking, in my opinion. Other people have commented on difference on price between the 918 and GT-R. I don't really care, I cant afford either, HAHA. This is my favorite out of the two.

    the interior already looks outdated. The console screen has big edges or sides and is too small, even a half inch is huge on a screen so small. the couldn't put just a little chrome? the middle knobs look straight from 90's, the vents look atleast ten years old already. rear view mirror looks stupid. idk just looks like they could of done a much better job on the inside

    when the p1 and laferrari was announced , everybody wrote the 918 off , it was too heavy , too slow , not enough power. Now its turned out to be the fastest of the lot , quite extraordinary. There is more to get from that turbo s though.

    The Porsche 918 Spyder beats the GTR Nismo by 6.3 seconds on this track. But on the Nurburgring it beats the Nismo by 11.68 seconds and that's over a 4 minute longer track. Interesting!!!

      the nismo was tuned for the nordschleife run, normally the nismo does 7:18 on the nordschleife. the nissan racing team changed the camber, ride height, aero settings, tyre pressure, started with an almost empty tank etc.
      the normal gtr mk3 does 7:26 without that tweaking.

    the speedometer is showing miles right? ^^ just checking. I think this car is overpriced at all. They should just put the porsche v8 from the panamera which is in this car too into a 911.

      Its actually a V8 from a Le Mans prototype, and 911's have been,and will always be H6 power-plants.

    New Z06 already broke this so called record. It is was by a GM driver but still faster with a manual trans not auto. Team Corvette does a lot of development here shouldn't be a surprise.

      There were reports the GM test driver was using all the "new track" that was added over last winter (see the curbing in the middle of the track in Nascar Bend and Oak Tree?). Technically, this is perfectly "legal" but C&D didn't do it so their lap times would be comparable to previous years - otherwise every car tested this year would be faster than previous years. Additionally, the factory GM test driver (Jim Mero?) sets Corvette lap records day in and day out. Absolutely impressive that he beat the 918 time but I bet if Porsche sent over a factory test driver he'd beat it as well. C&D openly admits to only have 20-30 minutes in each car and doing the best they can with the time allotted. Still, it'd be interesting to see what these cars all run with factory drivers!

      I did read the recent article of C&D. If I'm not mistaken 918 was run in May of last year here. Some others posts did say of so more upgrades were done at VIR. I see many have caught some feeling of this Z06 time. The Z28 vs GT R video I easily predicted it would happen only in auto not manual. There was a lot of back forth in that video of NISMO. Somewhere around September I made a comment of what Z06 would do at VIR. The ZR1 ran 2:45 something on older course.New Z06 has been fully upgraded. Results are to be expected. I have the magazine article. 918 had issues on the bumpy areas. It is why Z28 bested in some sections especially in 2.
      Team Camaro may come out and best that time too.

    This car got 887hp but didn't sound as efficient as GTR Nismo through a corner. Even when the front motor engaged, the Rear produce more power and makes it a RWD car. The only way it grip is the Cup 2 and the Cup2 will grip in a different way after it heat up and after couple laps. The driver need to learn how it handle again and again.

      Onoff314 less weight doesn;t mean faster at all. With wrong power to weight, the car just slide and power oversteer. Porsche 918 is a pure power house. Without the KERS, the car may be slower or barely quicker than the Turbo S Also 918 isn't 400kg lighter
