Unbroken Chain - Grateful Dead - 3-19-1995 The Spectrum, Philadelphia, Pa.

- A LoloYodel partial (audio) upgrade as I only modified the audio using an equalizer to lower the relative "boomy" lower/bass notes ... hence to give a slightly brighter audio tone. (Apparently, no "soundboard" audio recordings exist of this show)
During this "end" of an era (yes, 30 years of touring, hotels, drugs, cigarettes, hamburgers et al ... ) had taken their toll but this great band showed, expressed, exuded ... phenomenal spirituality and I dug this totally, though not blindly.
I found this video to be quite good, and simply wanted to remember 3 sweet songs, shown here :
set1-3 So Many Roads
set1-6 Unbroken Chain (1st played live, ever !, composed by Phil Lesh & played on their LP "Mars Hotel" recorded in April 1974)
set2-11 (encore) Brokedown Palace
Enjoy, peace !
I was there. I never had & have never again been around so many excited and happy people. Truly a chilling moment.
The crowd reaction is simply epic. Can you imagine what that must’ve felt like for Phil? A tune loved by all Deadheads which took 21 years to make its first appearance but when it did, wow, what a moment. Can you think of any other band that would elicit such a reaction from a band breaking out a song? It was such a special relationship between this band and their fans. Really miss it.
This is a first timer for me to 'see' this band live on youtube ...but its a very exceptional chemistry to say the least....seems like a huge crowd...
Without a doubt the most special relationship of all time
I wasn’t there for the breakout, but I did manage to get 3(!!!) Unbroken Chains on that tour, one each in Atlanta, Memphis, and Birmingham. The last six shows I ever saw. What a ride!
I wish everyone could have been there that night omg so crazy amazing. Chills and tears now also reliving it. Love you all 👍❤️🌹
That gave me goosebumps. Hearing the crowd as they realized what was taking place. A crescendo of emotion and joy. ❤
Only 5 months left with Jerry after this performance. I will be forever Grateful for those 5 months. Jerry, Phil, Bobby, Brent, Micky, Billy, Keith, Donna, Pig, Tom, Bruce, Vince, Thank you so much for making my life so much better. Wherever I end up, I hope you guys know how much you meant to me.
If this doesn't bring a tear of both joy and sorrow, you're missing a heart.
Syzygy indeed
True
tears of joy - damn I love this band, tears of sorrow - damn I LOVE this band
So many roads down the line
still tears pour down like rain
✨🥲✨💗✨🥲✨ I started crying 2 minutes into the video 🙏🏽 Such a Magical Response to History being made.
was at this show! when we realized what song it was we went crazy!! this was my last GD tour. miss those days. never ever forget it.
Sadly it was everyone's last Grateful Dead tour.
No, it wasn’t. This was Spring 95 tour. The last tour was Summer 95.
Epic crowd reaction
0:25 crowd realizes the tune (roar)
0:39 crowd realises even more the novelty !
0:52 crowd goes totally nuts with the 1st verse ...
Personally, I like the jam start at 3:00 and which Jerry does a pretty decent job in holding his part !
6:11 the BIG crowd-ovation of the end-song !!!
6:23 Thanks Phil !
I will tell you. Before the first show there were rumors they did this as a sound check. we thought, "Someone knows enough just to mess with us." Anyway, two great shows, then the third night, solid show. lotta fun. (Also, some folks had made a chain of glow strings, they were passing it upwards, everyone watched and understood they wanted it to make it,unbroken, to the top of the stadium.) So much fun that when they hit the end of the first set we forgot about the rumors so when they hit it it was kind of a continuation of the Woho! we were all still riding. So, a lot of awesomeness, my friend later described it, said that song was "the universe" and while they played, it was.
you left out the look on Phil's face at 1:02-1:05 and elsewhere
The crowd shook the Building. Completely unreal.
My friends and I had taken to recording the soundcheck by find the frequency of the ear monitors and recoding them. When they sound checked this song that night, Bobby was under the weather and not doing his part durning the introwhesn Phil stops everything and says, "Hey, I want to do this in Philly man!" Very special
LoloYodel thanks so much for these uploads. So fucking great to have these captured on film! Whata great performance and a great audience as well. They knew what they were experiencing.
I was there with my wife and we have Unbroken Chain inside our wedding rings. The electricity in the crowd when Phil dropped into could have lit up half the city. Yeah, it was amazing. Just hearing it again now brings all back. Those were the days.
As I get older, the harder it is for me to see Jerry in that last year man. He was hurting and I just wish he would have got some help sooner. Forever Grateful that when the bus came by, I got on.
It would have to have been way way further back than the last year.
I saw a lot of shows in that last year and it was the peak of my Dead career. I was deep into the trip & just enthralled by it all. Agree that as I've gotten older & seeing Jerry suffering so on this last tour it breaks my heart. Wish more could have been done for him. NFA ⚘
@@deadreckoning6288 great comment. Jerry is the only one who could help Jerry to be fair. He'd have left & just jammed w/his baby, JGB. That's pretty normal among op8 addicts. MUCH more so with the singular man who was Jerry. Sad. ✌🏽
Tears. They took us so high and so deep. The roots still are entwined thru my heart.
Amen
Truth and well said.
Still brings a tear after all these years.. Saw them 101 times and this was my 95th show, and they never TRULY caught me off guard and shocked until this moment...It may be a "Less than perfect" rendition of UC, but....Um, i guess you had to be there!! HAPPY 78TH BIRTHDAY, to you, Phil!! See You at the Peach!
I was there!
The greatest crowd reaction I've heard on any live tape, ever, and that includes the Beatles at Shea :-)
I was there...got chills.
I was at both this breakout and the Box Of Rain from Hampton 03/20/86. Box Of Rain was off the wall threw out the entire song. Both were completely mind-blowing magical experiences. So many others but those two Phil moments!
@@jantinucci Nice! Phil is under appreciated at times, but not by me.
I was outside in the parking lot that night. What a bummer.
Agreed. I listen to it over and over before actually listening to the whole song.
Gives me chills when Philly Phigured out what they were playing!! Phil was so caught after the first verse. Looks up so proud and choked up!! Philly got Phil’s respect. Broke out first or second Box of Rain in years and then later Unbroken. Was so much fun . Wish I could have one night back.
I was on the floor about 2/3 of the way back on the Phil side. After a common first set closer "Don't Ease Me In" came very early, I thought it was just going to be an extraordinarily short set. They didn't leave the stage and I remember someone, Phil I think, moving a music stand. At this point I started jumping and repeating "They're gonna do it!" After it was over, the person next to my wife turned to us and said, in a perfect stoner voice, "Wow, a virgin tune!" One of my most cherished memories. I was fortunate enough to see it on 6/19 at Giants Stadium and again on 7/9 at Soldier Field. So glad I went.
So glad for your story, I remember from the first note, a guy two seats away from me started jumping and saying, "no way no way no way oh my god no way!!" what a great moment....sooo special!!!!
6/19 at Giants Jerry's guitar rig was broken..................
@@gr8fullfred was it the rig? I thought it was Jerry.
@@jeffg7478 Well you know, you could be correct. It is entirely possible that Jerry was doing so bad that they just had to turn him down to off. Word was equipment was broken. I was there, it was bad. Went to Albany after, was very bad., even though a couple moments of bliss. Was very concerned about Jerry. For good reason. Looked terrible at both shows. Wrote email to David Ganz, "Jerry looked really bad, very concerned"
@@gr8fullfred I was there and was at Albany too and I was taken back with how bad he looked. I did find a clip of the giants show after commenting here and it did look like Jerry was playing but no sound came from it. When I was there I was wayyyy back and to me it looked like he just bowed out. I also found a video of Albany and I couldn’t believe how much Jerry was singing his heart out during FOTM. It was like his final gasp or the last of what energy he had but he was giving it all to the fans.
When I first was becoming a fan of the Dead in college, this was the song that put it over the top for me. I suddenly got it
Theres always a point where it all clicks and it's an incredible moment
For me too!
This band had THREE amazing, incredibly talented lyricists in Robert Hunter, John Perry Barlow, and last -- but not least -- the man who penned this lyric -- along with three others (Pride of Cucamonga, New Potato Caboose, Revolutionary Hamstrung Blues), the brilliant but unsung outlaw-poet, Robert McLane Petersen (1936-1987).
here here
To be there, I'll never forget that 1st moment hearing those notes played... This break out.. That night. For as long as I live. 💙⚡♥️
i remember the Philly Daily News rag reporting the Dead were soundchecking UC. excited. nowhwere near as as excited as hearing the noodles form before me and realizing THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING
Me too
An awesome moment in Grateful Dead history. I was SO FORTUNATE to be there.
This brings tears to my eyes every time.
I still get goosebumps when I hear this, it was amazing to share this experience with everyone who was there that night, may the chain never be broken!!! much love for you all, NFA!!!!
If there was ever an exchange of energy between a band and audience this is it
Phil's face at 1:00. I too was at this show. And man this was a real dead show. Was at all 3 of these shows. And what and experience
Was my 2,3,4th shows, didn’t get in but the experience outside will never be forgotten. Changed my life forever!
Was there, that roar ....the energy that night was just crackling you could feel the electric
My best friend and I were there 3rd row Jerry side - best tickets we ever had for a show, and what timing! I remember the 1st set being REALLY short. Jerry was getting ready to walk off stage for the intermission, when Phil stepped on the intercom pedal, looked over at Jerry and said what looked like "One more, One more". Then, MAGIC. The intermission was pretty long too, if I recall correctly, but who cared!
Scott Athen exactly as I remember it too
Jerry shaking his head no and Phil and Bobby convinced him
I will never forget 1995--especially that summer--for as long as I live. Sweet and bittersweet memories.
Chris Floyd Man when August 9 came around it was the beginning of such a long long mourning process for me. I still think about it often.
I was at this show, and not having the "Mars Hotel" album, I did not know this song, so the first time they played it, was the first time I heard it!
Rick Kline sane here. Thought it was a new Phil sing and couldn’t figure out why the crowd was freaking out
@@paulgoldstein3521 OY!
Phil's face at 1:02 into the song. For 2 whole seconds, he took it all in. Probably in his 30 yrs performing with the band, that was the loudest he ever heard for him personally. yes, it was a band moment, but this was really all his stage for that moment. Good on you Phil. You earned it.
Came here after watching / listening to the soundcheck / rehearsal for this song that took place two days prior. Interesting hearing how many unique time signatures are worked into this work of art 🖼️
You tuber called FIRST LAST has the soundcheck / rehearsal on there page
My 20th birthday.
Only show I ever saw stone sober.
i was ten rows from the stage Phil side..... AWESOME SHOW !!!!!! (~);}
god this forever for me- best moment of my life
YessI,Give Thanks,Love EveryTime... This Show was Magical Beauty... ☺️😆🥰🥰💯❤❤❤✊🏼👍🏼🤙🏼
Was at this show. Brings back such memories!
I was at this show. It was my 80th show and last time I saw the Dead. This song to end the first set was the ultimate highlight. Still brings tears and goosebumps.
Not too many bands that can shelf a tune or never play one of their own and decide during sound check to give it a go. Not too many bands that make people remember a night for the rest of their lives when they did play such a song. That is why this band was so special.
Love Is Real EveryTime,All Yalodel 🙌🏼✊🏼🤙🏼💫😚😚😚😚☺️🌹🌹🌹🌹🔥🔥🔥 there's a verry few like Yahlodel😍😍😍💕💕🌴🤙🏼🌴🌺
I heard this one a few months later in Charlotte. Thank you family !!! Miss you all..
brings
tears to my eyes
YES!! I WAS THERE AND I REMEMBER TEARS OF JOY, DANCING, AND EVERYONE WAS HAPPY...I WANT TO GO BACK TO THAT DAY!!!!
That was my last time seeing the Grateful Dead and after over 140 shows and hearing rumors of it being sound checked for several years it finally happened! It was absolutely great!
I was there and it took a minute to figure that yes! this wasUC! the place slowly went insane!!! Couldnt hear the band for a second or so as that every one was yelling cheering!! God bless the Good Ole GD!!!!
I remember hearing shortly after this show that they had played Unbroken Chain and then getting a tape of the show shortly after that and just going crazy listening to it. Alas, I only saw the Dead play a couple more times between this show and Jerry's death so I never heard them play it live. Definitely a moment for the Dead history books.
Philly, especially The Spectrum was "The Place" to see a show. The Philly crowd was always the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable anywhere. I always loved the banners people draped over the upper levels and the official banners in the rafters for the number of shows a band had played there. I always looked for the Dead and Springsteen banners.
You must be from Philadelphia. I'm from Baltimore and I always thought Capitol centre in Landover Maryland was the best.
@@drewl9330 Actually the Jersey Shore. Philly was our "go to place" in addition to Meadowlands and MSG.
100% truth
@@johnmccormick9042
Cap ctr rocked. Philly was better.
Loved the 50th show anniversary banner dedication.
I was at this show what a emotional time!! I still get choked up when I hear our reaction!!! love all my brothers and sisters!!!! Thank you kindly Phil and all of those who were there that night!!!!!
I love how the crowd gets quiet as Phil sings...like our minds are blown but we must listen. My era with the dead was much earlier so never got the chance to see this song but here it is preserved for all time
I was there and I still feel it to this day!!!!!
I went to the Saturday 03-18-1995 show. But I got to hear Unbroken Chain later that Spring at Giants Stadium 06-19-1995, my last time seeing Jerry.
Being from Philly this was my first, and last Dead show, someone told me this was like the first time they had played this song in over a decade, anyway I was on the Jerry side
This was the first time it was ever played live... ever! You witnessed history and so did i, was there that night and it was magic.
I Was At This Show With My Brother Ray 😢 He Passed Away A Few Years After ❤ Every Time It Reminds Me Of Him 😊
I think I got to hear Box of Rain at my last dead show. Never got to hear this. So awesome
Greatest crowd reaction I ever witnessed live. It was so loud it was deafening. After the lights came up for intermission it continued for several minutes. Mind blowing. Phil's son Grahame said while in Philly once that it was HIS fault, he was the one who requested it. He said, "Dad, how come you never do this live? I have a soundcheck where they were practicing it. Phil was instructing the band through the complex changes. One wanted to bag it until later in the tour. Phil said, NO! I wanna do this in PHILLY man!" Spectacular. Glad I witnessed this. #rememberthespectrum
I'm just contemplating the timeliness of the 1ist ever UC. The lyrics are all about the "sorrows and pearls" of life and its gets passed down from generation to generation, elder to child, mother/father to son/daughter. Ancient to modern. It would be Jerry's only time playing this to us live, giving us his sorrow and his pearls, passed to us in an unbroken chain. Of course it's phil's song and i'm so glad he got the band to do it. I think he was really trying to inspire jerry in these tough years, shake him up/wake him up. out of all the great Dead lyrics i think the line that best describes Jerry and the band is "Listening for the secret, searching for the sound". This was a rare and special evening in Dead history - bittersweet. but thats how this unbroken chain stretches. Om. rest in paradise
Dead center upper level in the walkway. I cried the entire time.
What a very special moment in Grateful Dead history. We had heard rumors they we're going to play it in Philly and actually heard and recorded them "practicing" it at sound check. Regardless, as the first notes were played, the roar of the crowd and the electric energy it triggered was something I'll never forget! I wasn't a big fan of the post-Brent years, but this was a very special moment and a pretty solid show to boot. (~);}
Go outside a night near a stream, close your eyes and just listen to this song. ♥
Remember it like it was yesterday you coundnt hear in the spectrum buddy of mine was like dude they sound checked unbroken chain👍
Ya man
This will be a song I will have played at my memorial service... "Looking for familiar faces in an empty Windopaene"
Heard them practicing it I couldn't believe it I called it and everybody passed me a joint and hugged me the love was magical
clearly priceless .. reminds of the early years when many tunes hadn't been officially 'recorded and the only time/space you got to hear them was at the show and you didn't even know the names of them but the memory lingered in your head for days afterward.
I couldn't believe it....BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER!!!! Chills! I love you brothers and sisters!
Was there
Goosebumppie
was blessed to catch the breakout...what a moment ....you can hear me around the .30 sec mark. ha!..thanks lolo!.....
A very chill song
HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHIL LESH!
If you were there you will never forget.
Gives me goose bumps listening to the joy and excitement of the crowd when they realize what the boys have just broken out. Always loved Unbroken Chain. Never understood why it took them 21 years to play it. Saw a bunch a great shows at the old Spectrum back in the day. This would have been nice to see.
I was not a big Dead fan growing up, but I liked some of their stuff. I loved Mars Hotel...great variety of songs. There are some bona fide classic stalwarts (Begonias, US Blues), and fine studio compositions, such as this lovely tune. I play guitar with some old friends and we do a lot of Dead, so I’ve delved back in. For me, I’m really rediscovering the band and expanding my knowledge of them. I had no idea they didn’t play this live until this night. Too bad they waited till the end, but I guess that’s partly what makes it such a poignant and striking moment. One gets the chills, as mentioned by others here. Glad I found it.
Looks like a good one...I'll check it out.
The '71-73 era is my favorite.
Thanks!
Saw the second one later in Charlotte after Philly. It opened the second set with similar insanity
I was there. Got miracle from my friend who was friends with the band. Kinda strange how we knew it was the end .
love the sound of the crowd
Instant emotional upheaval. Checked the comments and glad to know I'm not the only one.
So much love.
I got to see Phil play this 8/20/22 in Bethel NY ❤️⚡️💙 ✌🏻
Thanks so much for getting this out here. Utterly amazing.
What a great night. Best memories ever.
Great upload! Thank you!
I was there man I really was epic, sooo loud, like dark star 89
that was sick...
thank u...
happy anni...
was there as well, never forget it but seeing/reliving that just now was amazing...
thank u... d.
awesome weekend. the spectrum was electric 🔥
So glad iwas there for this!
I was there. Remember it like it was yesterday. The reaction in this video doesn’t do it justice but it’s still nice. If you were there what a memory. My friend and I were freaking out and people were like “ no it isn’t “. But sure enough after a couple more seconds…. An explosion of excitement tore through that place like nothing I have ever experienced. Living in south Jersey was the best place to see many shows. Always thankful they broke out tunes on the east coast. Loose Lucy in Landover was nice but this topped that. 3/14/90 in case you want to check it out…..and thank you for a real good time
I was there and damn it was glorious
Man Phil really has the great voice
Brings me to tears every time...
Thank You For Posting!!! I Miss Jerry
Thank you SO much for making this listneable. This was the most magical day of my life. The dichotomy of guys trying to sell us crack outside with the unbelievableness of what happened in there. Still gives me tingles. There was a lot of hype around this being a possibility on this tour (as much as there could be pre-internet), but man, it was spectacular. Feels.
the bust out...the goosebumps still come...44 seconds in
Legendary crowd reaction. On 3-14-1990 when Loose Lucy came back after 16 years the crowd was epic. The grateful dead fans are the loudest and most grateful for hearing a song. These 2 times in the 90's were legendary. I was at loose Lucy but I missed unbroken chain. But it's all very good because I am so grateful to have seen jerry and Brent. And mickey and bob and phill too! The grateful living will become the grateful dead.
I have not seen anything this cool in a long time... Incredible!
Pure Magic. And the crowd response, incredible
Happy for all who were there. I witnessed the Box breakout and its still one of my favorite tour memories. Let Phil Sing indeed!!!
This just brought me to Tears 💗🥲💗 They Gave So Much JOY 🌈🌈🌈❣️ Thank You Lolo for documenting History 🙏🏽 Goosebumps Galore 💞🤗🤗🤗
Thank you Phil !! So glad I was there ;-)
It's just amazing the emotions that a single song can release in us.
thanks for sharing! LOVE reading the personal story comments too, thanks for those as well!!!
We love you Cody. Thank you so much.
Nice! Almost forgot I was there for it...Thanks to my friend who sent me the link and reminding me, and as always, thanks Yodel~you've helped make life more tolerable out here in this world I find myself in. Cheers All!
Touching video
This is absoluely amazing, and beautiful. Jerry's farewell......
Listen to that crowd! Philly loves Phil Phor sure!
I was in the 10 row of this show with my friend who had a full leg cast on and was trying to dance on crutches :-)
Great to be able to see this,... and more importantly, hear it. I was there, and all you could hear from the upper levels of The Spectrum was the roar of the crowd, interspersed with a few notes, lol. BUT I WAS THERE!!!
Omg...it was my bday! I heard they played it. I got a tape as soon as i could get my hands on it. I listened to it and you could feel the energy through the tape from the crowd. I have never experienced a moment like that. Goosebumps every time. Now I can see it....THE LOVE REALLY IS REAL...AND IT REALLY WILL NOT FADE AWAY....EVER!! I love you all my brother and sisters. Can't wait to see/meet you soon! Thank you so much LOLO!
