  • This trip was a long time in the making for me.
    It was the first time going in to the Bob Marshall Wilderness and it was the first time I have backpacked with people I've never met.
    I've been trying to go on a trip with Joey from MyOwnFrontier for years.
    / channel
    Here is Joey's video of this trip:
    • Video
    I also got to meet the Corey and Eric:
    / montanajdm
    This trip was everything that I could've hoped for, for my first trip into the BOB. We hiked over 70 miles in 6 days, went over 2 passes, had a bear run at us, watched a guy nearly get bucked off a horse and walked along the Chinese Wall.
    I'll let the video show you the rest. It was a hell of the trip!
    Quick Links:
    00:53 - TRAILHEAD
    04:11 - DAY 2
    05:03 - INDIAN POINT STATION
    06:04 - SUN RIVER CROSSING

    18:00 - NEEDLE FALLS
    19:04 - WHITE RIVER CROSSING

    Thank you for such an amazing video. The scenery reminds me of a 6 day trip on the CDT through Glacier National that I was so fortunate to take this year. Now I need to go back to Montana again and see the Bob. You and your crew do backpacking the same way that I like to, with some long days but still taking time to soak in the wilderness, giving the proper respect to the outdoors.

    Awesome video. Thank you for sharing it! We just got back from doing that same route. Yours and Joey's videos were both so helpful in our trip planning. It was quite a bit drier and hotter when we went, though I'm happy to report the trail up to Larch Hill Pass has had the blowdowns cleared. I was very thankful we didn't have quite the ordeal climbing that one that you guys did.

    • @mountainwanderer
      @mountainwanderer  2 роки тому +1

      How Cool!!! This is still one of the best trips I've ever done. Did you do White River Pass first like we did? I'm interested where you camped back there. Glad to hear Larch Hill has been cleaned up, that was rough when we did it. I know those trail crews had a big job in front of them!

    • @cubrock73
      @cubrock73 2 роки тому

      @@mountainwanderer Yes, we did White River Pass first. I'm glad we did, as the ascents seemed easier than they would have been had we done the loop the opposite direction. The first night, we couldn't find the same spot you guys camped at and wound up going past Indian Point Meadows to a camp site where Trail 211 starts off Trail 203 (CDT). It was a pretty good spot, though it was right on the trail. We had a black bear and her cub walk into camp that first afternoon. She seemed pretty surprised to see us and they got out of there quickly, but not before we got a little video of them.
      The second night, we camped beside the horse camp. The outfitter had tents and such set up, but no one stayed there that night. The flies were pretty bad, but I guess that is the price you pay for staying near a horse camp. There weren't a lot of good options there. Maybe there are more camp sites a bit further south, but we didn't want to backtrack.
      The hike up White River to Juliet Creek was a grind - a lot harder than I thought it would be, especially the last three miles. Once we made the last crossing of the river, the creeks were all dried up and we got really worried we wouldn't find water. On day 2, we met a couple who had just come through there and they said Juliet Creek was a trickle. Thankfully, they were mistaken and they must not have gone up Wall Creek trail at all. We found their trickle, but Juliet Creek had really good flow up there - you just had to hike to actual Juliet Creek, which wasn't far. I figure they must have camped on the river somewhere and saw that little trickle before heading up Larch Hill Pass. They obviously didn't camp on Juliet Creek. Flow was good enough to rinse ourselves and some of our clothes off, which was a welcome blessing. The trails were very hot and dusty and we were caked with dirt by this point. It was COLD that night. I'm not sure if that side of the mountain is just colder or if it was just weather, but I bet it was high 30s when we woke up. It was the only morning we built a fire. All the other nights were comfortably cool. Daytime temps were well into the 90s every day.
      After coming down along the Chinese Wall, we camped farther down Burnt Creek than it appeared you guys did. Again, the camp sites we saw were somewhat limited, but we did not get far off the trail looking. We were exhausted by that point. We camped at the flattest spot we found, where the trail crosses Burnt Creek before heading over towards the river. No good places to hang our food bags at that site, but we did the best we could and had no critter troubles.
      On day five we had planned to hike back to our first camp site and spend the day there resting up, but we got there around 11:30 AM after sleeping in and having a lazy morning. We decided to just hike out and spend the night in Augusta. Wound up being an 18 mile day. The boys ate it up, but their poor dad was really dragging by the end. It was HOT and there is so little shade on that stretch of trail. We ran into a number of pack strings, which slowed us down a bit, too. Gotta give those animals right of way. :) It was well worth it, though, to have a shower, a real bed, and a cheeseburger at the Buckhorn Bar in Augusta. That place cooks some good grub. :)
      We are talking about going back next summer. I'd like another go at the trail with a bit more conditioning under my belt. And, we'd like to add a day and go up Haystack Mountain.

    • @mountainwanderer
      @mountainwanderer  2 роки тому +1

      Down by the outfitters camp, we didn't see anything else either. Really surprising to me. We had talked about doing Haystack Mt. too, but it wasn't in the cards for us when we got up there. The pack strings seem to be constant on the CDT portion heading into Benchmark. I didn't film all of them that we encountered. Sounds like an amazing trip that you had! Now it is making me want to go back!

    In the six years heading into the Boundary Waters with my kids, we've never seen bears, but I always have my air horn ready to grab in the belt pouch of my pack. Just tested it to make sure it still works. Scared the heck out of both the dog and me.

We were a couple of seconds away from using our bear spray, but that horn did the trick. @@mountainwandererAs for bears, not sure how much you watch other people’s stuff, but check out Forest Dweller’s video “4 Days of Bear and Elk.” While I wouldn’t try to pet them, the bears in Olympic are pretty used to people. I’m always more worried about cougars there - even saw tracks following my tracks from earlier in the day one time which meant I was being stalked. But the bears - so long as you don’t tempt fate - don’t worry me there near as much as in other places.

    • @mountainwanderer
      @mountainwanderer  4 роки тому +1

      On this trip I didn't have any problems finding places to hang. I was a little worried about it going in, because I knew that parts of the wilderness had burned. The only on that was a little tough was when we camped on Juliet Creek, but it was tight for everyone as it was just a small spot. I've wondered about hanging in Glacier too. I imagine that it could get tough since you have to camp in certain spots.
