he Aurora has been designed as an Ideal Bushcraft Knife. We took over two years to develop and test the knife by making a number of prototypes and putting the prototypes in the hands of experienced bushcrafters and outdoorsman in the North America - Europe and the U.K. We took that input and further refined the design to its final form. The handle is 100% ergonomic for use in the hand in any common grip while using the knife as a working tool. The point is in line for Drilling and the over all balance of the knife is neutral so it does not favor the handle or the blade in use. You will find it to be one of the most useful tools made today for serious outdoor use in wilderness living and wilderness survival.
The aurora is available in both A-2 and CPM3V. This knife is supplied with an Aurora sheath. However, it can also be matched with Bush Seax Bantam, Bushcraft A, Gameskeeper, and American Small Sheath.

I'd like to throw out a suggestion for you to try.
When using a Fire Steel,
pin your feathers or tinder with your blade edge, and moving only the F.S. by drawing it backwards across your Spine Edge.
This gives extremely good control, putting sparks exactly on the tender in just the right spot.
Usually lighting in one or two strikes.

Man this video proves my points. You used to truly review knives. I bought an Aurora and came back to this video and some others. You did it flawless. This is how you built the fame DBK has today. I suppose with all advances in your equipments of sound, editing, and recording and with the help of your friend you can do it again, even 10 times better.

I own both of those knives and they are absolutely the best money I've ever spent on a knife. They both have been up to any task that I put them through, my only complaint is with the sheaths that come with them, they just will not hold the knife secure and with fall out very easily and if you are not careful you will lose your knife, i threw mine in a box and made my own and they work just fine
Sweet review of a sweet knife! I have a Aurora as well and I agree on the versatility of this knife. It's lighter than the Bravo as well so it's a bit more comfortable to wear.

What is good too with the cpm 3v is that steel don't let a metal taste on the tongue when you eat for exemple a apple with the knife . I love it

I'm struggling on what to get for a bark river knife as a primary blade. Aurora, bravo 1, bravo 1.25 or bushcrafter 2. Any advice?
Does the gunny hunter make as fine feathers as the aurora in this vid? Is it as good as the aurora in the vid for carving too? What about comparing scandi to convex on carving?
Hey great videos, are you selling an aurora lt? I have been wanting a Bark River for years but haven’t been able to get one at a decent price!
I would highly recommend you guys try a Swamprat Ratmandu knife.Sr101 steel in my experience held a great edge,the tip was bombproof and I've batonned trough a forest with it without a hiccup.Price-wise it's around the same as most bark river knives if not a bit cheaper but it doesn't come with a sheath.

After watching these videos I had to order my own Aurora! I got the LT in Elmax steel with the green pinecone handle. Most beautiful knife I’ve ever owned.

I need a smaller knife for carving, food prep, fire making. I already have a big knife (fallkniven A1 Pro) for choping, battoning and other "big" job. Should i go for the Aurora or the Aurora Lt? And will the edge retention be affected by the lesser tickness of the Lt?
Honestly the difference in the thickness is so small that the effectiveness is the same for both knives
Thank you for this informative video up till now I had assumed that the aurora would of had a very delicate tip thank you for debunking that. Also as a infantry soldier I enjoyed seeing the environmental officer in the rain ha ha.

good to meet you as well. I am aware why they skeletonize the handle.... my thought is since there is a lot less steel under the scales..... theres also that much less glue holding the scales to the handle. potentially making them easier to vibrate free
The pins should hold them into place but I understand your concern. I have never experienced it on a knife and I own many full tang skeletonized tangs. I don't think many knife makers have an un-skeletonized tang. have you ever had the issue?

dragon3831 I thought the same thing but have learned that just the opposite is true. when they skeletonize the handle, the epoxy is applied with excess so it actually fills the openings and creates a stronger bond.
yes its a full tang...... but it also is hollowed out under the scales. Ive ssen one before the scales were put on. theres actually a lot of metal missing under there
They do this to decrease weight and balance the knife. In general it shouldn't be a problem skeletonizing the tang. It qill decrease the strength a bit on paper but will still be nearly impossible to break. I don't see the tang breaking inside tthe handle ever. 90% of the times a knife breaks it breaks where the handle meets the blade. So dont worry about this :).Nice day to you mate! and thanks for watching
That's done for balance & weight reduction with minimal compromise to the overall strength of the knife (imho).

The Aurora has some reports of the tip breaking off, that is why I chose the Bushcrafter over it. No regrets there, but I had to reprofile it some as the edge was too wide of a profile.
We had the same with our bushcrafter but the problem was easily solved. The bushcrafter is a great knife. I never really abuse the tips of my knives so luckily I never had any problems. Thanks for watching mate!
I’m worried about the tip on my Aurora, it comes to such a thin fine point I’m scared of breaking the tip!! Have you ever broke the tip off on an Aurora???
Do you ever have any fear that this knife will snap? I know it’s 3v but it’s not the thickest blade, and it has the skeletonized tang
Good review man, and without all the jackassery for me it's much more enjoyable to watch!
Bark River Aurora are the most comfortable knives to hold, but the initial quality sucks! The handle has some rough spots, and the cutting edge is uneven. If you put the straight cutting edge from the hilt on a straight surface, you will notice concavity in the cutting edge going towards the tip. There was a point towards the tip where my Aurora was not convexed properly. For a 2mm portion it was beveled instead of convexed. I may get a bravo 1.25 in the future but I hope the quality improves by then. Made in Japan is turning out to be better than made in the USA. My A1X and S1X are superior blade wise to the Aurora.
Arora in 3v skandi any one have an opinion on this knife?

did you testet ever the CPM154 steal? should be more Rust resistance against Cpm 3V?
Yes it's a great steel and indeed more rust resistant but not as tough and not as good edge retention as 3v
you need to do a head to head with an aurora and aurora lt

extremely hard question. I'm going to run away from your question and i'm not looking back.
They are both very different steels and accel in different areas. CoS is extremely well balanced for a Stainless steel while CPM-3V is ridiculously tough and has great edge retention.
thanks! so i saw in your survival Video, that CPM3v is not made for Survival, just more for Bushcraft. You said, COS or Elmex for Survival because it is easy to sharpen. But otherwhere you said CPM 3v is also easy to Sharpen. So what is right :)?

in my opinion the aurora is already thin enough. I wouldn't want it any thicker or thinner to be honest.
Wich think that is better. The aurora or the vortex. Both looks great for bushcraft

That is exactly how I made my baton. I love both convex and scandi grinds but, from my experience, scandi will consistently win at giving you fast and thin feathers. Convex grind will bit wood deeper e more wood destroying power than scandi.
Oh?, nice to hear your experience! This is why it's very hard to write down facts about grinds and knives. It's just how someone experiences it. Your experience is opposite to mine on the feathersticking part. This is also why everyone should just try them out and find out what fits best with them. Thanks for sharing mate!
Hey, thanks for the reply. I love that knife. The handle is amazing but it definitely needs the liners, I also have one without the liners and the liners do make a difference. What do you think about the Aurora 2? would love to see a video on that blade.
Oh man I would love to get my hands on that knife. Even make the set complete with the Aurora mini hehe. There is a slight chance I'll get a chance of holding it soon. Problem is, I want to test as many different steels as possible and I already have like 4 cpm-3v knives. It feels a bit wrong getting another one.
:D I can relate. I am very poor because of my knife addiction. I also like to try out many steel. I have knives in A2, 3v and elmax from brkt. In order of sharpness: elmax, A2, 3v, in order of toughness: 3v, A2, elmax. I heavily test out my knives because sharpening them is not a problem with chosera stones. A2 is underrated. If you do not mind a patina, A2 is the way to go; it is cheaper, not too much behind 3v in toughness, it is easier to sharpen and can get a sharper edge than 3v. I think you will love the elmax. If you have a love for sharpness and edge retention like me you will love elmax. Elmax is stronger than people give it credit. It will baton with no problems just avoid heavy knots cause I did chip mine. The cool thing about elmax compared to other steels is that even with chips it will still cut like a laser.
I have excellent experience with my gunny in elmax! I love the steel even more than cpm-3v. It's laser sharp like you say and even holds its edge better than cpm-3v in my experience. I leave my a2 knives aside these days. They do get very sharp but I think the drop in price between a2 and cpm-3v is minimal. A2 is very easy to sharpen but in my desired angle it takes problems very fast. the elmax knife even felt like it sharpens more easy than cpm-3v.

An ax on a backpacking trip isn't practical, especially if you're walking through steep and/or rough terrain. Also, it is safer than using an ax. Beyond doing it just for fun, these are the reasons why you baton.
Dick Tracy safer is just a matter of opinion and what you are more comfortable with.
Attaching a small hatchet such as the Gransfors Bruk Wildlife Hatchet to your pack is very practical if you're looking at processing a lot of wood, but I agree with you if you're going to find most of your wood on the floor and won't need to take any thick limbs or branches off of felled trees
Bark river knives just dont grab me at all, I dont know what people see in them? Is there any other companies that make full convex grinds other than over priced Fallkniven?

I would have to disagree, I don't think supersteels are a good option for survival knives since sharpening in the field is a pain to do
I found that cpm-3v is quite easy to strop back to a sharp edge with good quality compound. But a steel like 12c27 will be much more easy ofcourse.
Anything more expensive than 50 dollars isn't a good deal for a knife...
