We get a lot of questions about this topic so in this video we are trying to help those people.

Great videos DBK. As a newcomer to proper bushcrafting and knives in general, I find these videos educational and entertaining.
Thanks for your kind words man!! We do our best, Cheers man!
2StrokeBloke this is not meant to offend you but is " I find" these videos ... a proper formulation ? there is a similar one In german and I always thought this was a mistake made by german native speakers
nice thank you
You youngins are adorable being all professional like. Lol Love the evolution of the show and you two, keep I up!!
*it
I agree..they´re cute together...I miss being that age
You made my choice of buying a Bark River so easy...(after watching other reviews.)Thx DBK...new subscriber !
I work construction. I carry my Mora Robust every day, and NEVER had an issue with it! Always a good value.
Another great video gentlemen. A thorough analysis across the price points. I really enjoy your table top review.
Thanks man! Allways nice to hear some good feedback, cheers
So you got the Garberg! It is my latest knife too and i love it.
As for reasons and intended use of a knife-lets not kid ourselves,we have crossed the line of need a long time ago and buy knives just because we want them .
sure thing. we became collectors. But hey money doesn't make one happy. cool stuff can! We have a review on the garberg coming soon. We loved it very much as well.
Great video! Good advice and perspective. well done
Thanks a lot Cornell!
I have to say that this is the most enjoyable knife video I've seen this year (and trust me, I've watched a ton of them).
Thanks a thousand! It's good to hear because we also really enjoyed making this video.
Nice knives! I’ve been wanting to get a fallkniven f1 for a while. But those bark rivers... then the benchmade puukko. So many knives, so little time.
Hello DBK, what's up ?
I got my Gunny Elmax today, beautiful knife, i can't wait to test it this weekend !
Thank you for your advice and keep going your videos !!
You are very welcome Ben!
We are doing great thanks!
Congratulations on your awesome knife! I love my gunny elmax a lot. I bet you will be happy with it.
- stay sharp!
Thanks guys, you are one my favorite channel !
I need your experience about stropping, i bought the DLT strop XL with black and green coupound, but everytime i strop my knives with it, i loose my edge ... I watches yours videos about stropping but i don't understand what's it's the problem ...
Thanks for your futur reply ;)
On a DBK video marathon love you guys!
You guys have an insane amount of nice high quality knives. That's why I would love to see you both buy a Gerber Strongarm, try it out.....yes I said Gerber;) Steel quality is all about heat treatment, a good cook makes good food and Gerber's USA 420 is cooked just right.
I have only three knives, I've sold my small collection and have 1 Mora Pro Robust, Condor Bushlore & a Gerber Prodigy. I don't have the Strongarm yet but will have one soon, but my Prodigy I kid you not ive been using that knife daily chopping and carving hard use for 8 months. The knife is 420hc USA and it's got a really good heat-treat, after changing the grind a bit it's been the best I only strop it from time to time. The Strongarm is only $50 US it's a better design than the Prodigy, give um a try it would be cool to see what you guys think, I love your channel by the way.
Thanks a lot mate! The only experience I have with 420 is from buck and a budget knife I have. I wasn't really impressed by buck's 420 but as you say it's all about the heat treat! 50% type of steel and 50% what you can cook of it! I own an Enzo O1 and while O1 is a budget steel the performances is like that of some ''super steels'' because of it's heat treat.
I don't know if we'll be able to test the prodigy anytime soon but it sure looks like a very usable knife made as a work horse. Is there a version without the serrations? I use the start of the edge most for cutting so serrations are kinda a pain for me.
Stay sharp! and all the best to you!
Dutch Bushcraft Knives The Strongarm comes with both choices straight edge or serrated, but just recently Gerber released the Prodigy with a straight edge. For new comers who might be looking for a camp knife/survival knife I would highly recommend them over the Mora's in the $30-$50 range. IMO the Strongarm is a better overall design sheath is awesome.
I'm thinking of getting my first bark river. I want the fox river for kind of a all around knife, but trying to decide between the elmax or cpm 3v. Any thoughts would help. Btw, love the channel, you guys keep it fun! Also i'm pretty sure most women have more experience in bush crafting! lol
My first knife was the Cold steel Leatherneck SF, followed by the KABAR 1211. My latest & most favorite knife is the TOPS Silent Hero.
Cool!
Brothers, thanks a lot for all of your sweet talks and for all help. actually i'm really new on bushcrafting. After using mora companion for some time, as my first full tang real bushcraft knife i decided to buy an enzo trapper 95. which is not also very expensive. But now it is really hard for me to choose one of those steels. i was sure that i was going to go with "01 tool steel" bacause it is really easy to sharpen carbon steel(im also very new about sharpening with waterstones). But after watching this video, i think maybe i may go with "N690 stainles". So, i have two questions : 1. How fast does 01 rusts in a wet enviroment? 2. Is there any difference bethween the performances of two enzo trappers 01 and N690; if i get N690 do i loose any cutting capability? Again thanks for all off your effort. You helped a lot.
+baris ersoz hey baris, O1 is a great steel. It has better edge retention than n690 with the enzo Knives. Enzo does a very good heat treat on their O1. However O1 rust like crazy. It's on of the few knives i found impossible to keep without rust spots. I do love it a lot. If you go for stainless i would suggest taking a look at the elmax version. It has better edge retention than O1 and N690 and is stainless.
I don't want to be ignorant. Is it Martin or Maarten? My buddy is looking at a fixed blade. He really likes Bark River and and CPM 3V, but hears you guys talk a lot about Fallkniven. Massdop has some good prices on the Fallkniven F1s and it is VG-10 laminate. What is the difference between regular VG-10 and VG-10 laminate? He's drawn towards Bark River. Can you give him some advice? I think you'd go towards Bark River with CPM 3V. Let me know. He's a Vietnam veteran in USMC. He brought his Ka-bar over to my house and it still had dirt from Vietnam (1968). It had no rust. He never sharpened it either. Very impressive. We are way older than you guys, but respect your opinion. His use would be as a camp/bushcraft knife. Also I just bought a dPX HEFT Woodsman 6. Any opinion on that? I have a First Edge 5050 that US Navy Seals use. What do you think of that one? Sorry for so many questions, but I'm new to knives (1 year) and still bringing up my knowledge on fixed blades and folders. I'm an idiot that bought 90 knives in my first year. Thanks for your input. I love your channel.
It's Maarten but google translate turns my name into Martin in english so i guess I'm both haha. Both Bark River and Fallkniven are excellent choices. All the fallkniven survival blades (F1 S1 and A1) are laminated vg-10. This means the VG10 is sandwiched between a layer of softer steel. This adds flexibility to the VG-10 making it less prone to breakage.
Vg-10 is a really balanced steel. Decent edge retention, very easy to sharpen and stainless. CPM-3V can rust, holds an incredible edge but is harder to sharpen or strop. Both steels excel in their own way.
I think, as he is a older than us he can really appreciate the semi custom feel of bark river knives and being able to choose from different handle materials. CPM-3V is our current favourite steel, together with the fact that bark river has excellent handle geometry I would say go with Bark River and CPM-3V in this case. Chose one with liners in the handle if you have medium to large hands.
I don't have any experience with DPX knives but the sleipner steel is very good. It holds a good edge while still being quite easy to sharpen from what i've heard.
The First Edge has a great blade geometry. together with the Elmax steel it should make a excellent knife. Elmax is one of the better steels available in production knives at this moment. It has better edge retention than cpm-3v.
We are honoured that you value our opinion. We are young but we love what we do and we try to share what we learn.
-Stay sharp!
Great!
I agree with you on the gimping. With no gloves it becomes pretty irritating.
Good video fellas. You guys have a lot of knives.
+YesDeere13 thanks a lot mate! We try to test as many different knives as possible so we can share a good opinion based on different experiences.
Its crazy to see how DBK has progressed from these old vids. Can't wait for my DBK knife
This is hilarious seeing how funny you two have become and how much the show has changed!
Thanks a lot !
Nice Talk, i love knives since my 5 years... I had plenty of cheap shits etc... then i started with family tradition... blacksmithing, i am making my own knives, every day means practice... i started with sharpening few days ago and i am able to make razor sharp knive in 10 to 15 minutes, i shaved my arms and legs (blood included) :D Thanks for help, advice and fun :) I prefer skandi knives, because they look more angry for me than konvex.
Great video guys. Totally agree about your point on folding knives, they have their place but in no way replace a fixed blade out bush. Why trust a knife thats already broken? I often use a spyderco for EDC but it gets left behind for a Mora anyday of the week when outdoors. Those Fallkniven Pro knives are so shiny, ive never heard of the Steel interesting, the next knife upgrade I think will be Bark River. Cheers from Australia
thanks a lot! We mirror-polished all our fallkniven pro knives. it looks great on them haha. They don't come like this from the factory though.
which knife would you trust your life(ves) with? Thanks as always for your videos.
the swedish air force don't use the fallkniven F 1 anymore, because of the convex grind. They only used the first production line with the flat grind. The convex is very difficult to shape in the field, that's a problem for military use.
Great new videos guys! I'm also a big Fallkniven fan. The pro series are indeed great. Also, I love the NL series. They're just sublime to hold and to use and look at. I've been darkening the leather handles with a beeswax mix and they look stunning. Under close scrutiny these fallknivens, IMO, are as good or better than most custom knives...some costing thousands of dollars...so they are good value in that context. Not sure how accurate, but I heard that Peter at Fallkniven likes to carry the NL1 Thor into the Swedish wilderness!!!
Thanks a lot mate! I also use beeswax for darkening leather often! It makes it look very classy and even helps preserve it. Thanks for sharing mate!
couldn't find a vid of you guys only talking about steels. that would rock because you've had experience with soooo many!!
we might do one after we've gotten our custom knives. We have some on order in very special steels.
m390 steel is one of my favorites.. great vid guys
for good reason! M390 holds an incredible edge!
Thanks a lot!
I get a lot of entertainment with you two. The thrills of learning and discussion and the entertaining aspect of producing watchable shows. The videos are flawless and Im eager when I see your video presented to watch. I like your opening music and scenes even. My choice for a knife would be Bark River Gunny hunter in Elmax with white C Tek, if I could get one. Maybe they will do a fill-in run of tjem and I can order. I heard they are 0.135" inches thick on tje spine. I like thin, slicey knives. Today I first heard of Fox River EXT-1 IN ELMAX LT 0.118" INCHES ON THE SPINE! Perfection, cause the regular is a friggen giant scalpel!
2 minutes in, Mora knives! Can't go wrong
8:45 to 9:00 lmao
+BirdShot IV great video guys!
thanks a lot Bird, frankie , both.
Funny thing is we learn from ourselves with these videos. They make you think about your knives.
BirdShot IV QqI don't really know what to say I know you've wanted to leave here for a long time and I know you'd even had it worked out for Teresa to put you on the bus, I don't think Dewayne has meant any ill intent with any words and I know words can be twisted. I think Chantal is a bad influence on you and everytime y'all are together rumors fly. Just like all the stuff she told you the other day about little Michael and Kathy green whether it's true or not it's not yalls place to spread it. That's the problem y'all talk about all this and I've begged you to not gossip and to keep your nose on your face. Gracie I love you with all my heart and I always have and I always will. All this talking behind my back is wrong and a lot of rumors have came from you and Chantal and I know this. And Dewayne has always despised Chantal and Jessica because of there mouths and the way they carry tales. We will talk tomorrow tho......I love you're
@@jeanniebrooks679 ?? 🤫🤐🤭
Oh, also another sharpening method is putting sandpaper on a hard surface and wetting it, then sharpening your convex knife like you would on waterstones. The exact same results, only difference is you don’t get a mirror finish and the sandpaper doesn’t last that long. I tried this method after sharpening my knife for 5 goddamn hours on King stones.
Great video! Despite being into custom knives I also love the F1, fantastic robust and versatile knife. I have one question and a comment.
Which make was that 160+Euro knife with the "supersteel"?
As a comment on supersteels. I think supersteels are overrated :-) A2, O1, 52100, 80CrV2, etc. blades can be fantastic performers if the heat treat and grinding is done right. In fact these steels are very common among custom makers, and they can be blody good!
I do agree. Supersteel is mostly based on pure edge retention. I love O1 for it's balance but I dislike A2 (only have experience with Bark river's a2) it didn't hold an edge and was also kinda weak. MY o1 enzo performed fantastic!
If handed right A2 and O1 should be very close in performance (O1 being a tiny bit worse on rust). I have several Fiddlebacks in A2 (and one in O1), and they are all great! The steel in my Fiddlebacks are also notably harder than my A2 BRKs...
What is a good way to determine/learn what steels to go with for a survival knife/bushcraft I've got a few model moras I love them besides they don't all have a 90* edge on spine. But I'm looking for a one tool knife option long term that is great for the majority of tasks I know there is no such thing as the perfect knife that does it all but I would rather get a really quality one next versus 10 more okay quality...... I hate to admit it but my esse I had much higher hopes for but just striking a ferro rod on the grinned spine it gets nicks after just a few strikes.. may be good for other stuff but I like the full tang and thickness of blade something like the esse 4 with a better steel spine that can take many ferro strikes and I'd be happy
guys. really love your videos. funny, informative and just awesome. I want all your stuff! haha so jealous of those beautiful woods. however, I have a request, could you please do a video on knife steels? I am lost in knives. I want a condor bushlore, a karesaudo boar and everything else I see with that style but how do I know which steel to choose? please help! :)
hey, thanks a lot for the kind words! We might do a video about knife steels later on this year. We are expecting some hard to get knife steels (custom knives) within the next few months so we want to test these before the video.
Loved this, can't wait to see part #2!
Good to hear mate! good thing we already have one ready with another topic.
thanks for watching this long video!
You guys have any recommendation for a small EDC fixed blade? Bark River I'm guessing? I'm not concerned about the sheath as I would likely make my own.
Great videos. Loved the Robust destruction. What a knife!
I like the bark river bravo EDC or little creek in cpm3v. If you are in the EU you could also check out Patriot Manly. It's very inexpensive.
Hi, I wanted to know what is the best stainless steel for a bushcraft knife and survival?
I would be undecided between Elmax and S30V, but I wanted to know which of them would best resist lateral stresses?
Let me know what your choice would be, a greeting
Hey michele, I would say something like CoS perhaps or 154cm. I havent really tested elmax or s30v for lateral stress. carbon steels are usually the better choice for that. CPM-3v won't rust very easily but is very tough
Great video guys! Nice to have good reviewers in the Netherlands helps a lot with choosing my next knife! Keep up the good work!
Kevin Krekels thanks a lot! you are very welcome!
do you have/use any Kizlyar knifes in your collection? if so why didn't u put them here? I personally love big knifes so almost all mine are 30cm+ :) I can see you dont have many of that big size in your collection
Hi Guys Mark here, after watching you stress test on the Mora Knife i got the black and green Companion and also the Garberg because its full tang, your reviews along with many others but yours especially after trying to kill it i figured you cant beat it so i figured if the non full tang can handle that beating imagine the full tang how good that would be, i dont know nothing about the different types of metal i just went according to the reviews, maybe you guys can do a video review on that topic in the future thanks guys peace out
Thanks guys 👍🏼 I never heard of that particular steel before .. I love the enzo trapper and the handle materials ,for the money it's 👍🏼👍🏼 also bark river are awesome .. falkniven is 😍 I was reading some of the comments... I have a bk2 1095 .. is elmax and vg10 better for hard use , .. make more videos .. talk more 👍🏼👊🏼👊🏼
thanks mate! Elmax and Vg10 are pretty different steels. Elmax is mainly edge retention while VG10 is a balanced steel like CoS but not as good as CoS. Elmax is excellent for hard use in a smaller knife. In a big knife it might get chippy.
I use a Mora Bushcraft Forest at the moment and it does it all and keeps a great edge! But next up is something from Fällkniven (swedes support swedes) ;). Great videos btw!
If you love bark river knives i wonder if you have tried the blackjack knives. Made in the bark river factory but quite different styling.
I have looked at them. they are more hunting style knives. I would love to own one but it would sit in my drawer for most of it's life I think. Might get one in the future because some of them use steels I don't have yet hehe.
New subscriber catching up on your older video..but I'm in Eastern NC USA I've no idea how much a euro is..could you give price in euro and US? Anyway love your channel
Nice video guys bt ineed to know wath knive i need to buy if im 11 years old and i want to start learn bushcrafting!!! Thanks for your time
you should go for a Mora bushcraft force or a companion! best knives to start with!
Dutch Bushcraft Knives thanks guys
What do you think about 800 layer C80W1, 100CR6 and 66MN4 damascus steel? Is it worth the price?
Great now I have to buy more knives! Dankjewel!
Was ik vergeten, what blade length do you guys recommend and which type of points (clip or drop)? I have my Becker bk-10 with a 5.5 inch blade. I'm now looking for a smaller "companion" at no more than 4 inches, it looks like most of the ones you presented in this vid are around that size?
you are very welcome! haha!
mora 2000 stainless steel or the mora companion carbon steel knife? Which one should i buy ? You two got me into trying some bushcrafting! or what exact model mora should i invest in?
nvm i couldn't help it and got the mora bushcraft carbon black one...looks sick! Not as nice as your favorite knives but i know i will love it. just got some sharpening stones as well for a couple pocket knives i just bought but now i will actually have a kickass knife to use it on! love your channel
watching your vídeos it's such fun!
thanks a lot!
The last sentence hits the point for me, too. I once tried an Esee 3 and I think it feels a bit cheap in the hand and it has that kind of military look which I personally don't like.
Jup, not a nice brand in our opinion
I find the steel way to soft.
Hi DBK, if cost is not any problem and I have to choose one knife between "Fallkniven F1 Lam COS" and "Bark River Aurora CPM 3V", which one would you suggest for simple bushcrafting, camping and survival purposes.
If money doesn't matter, nur you want a good knife for a more than good price, buy a Duloknives Custom. I recently own nine of them, and can highly recommend each of these knives.
Did you guys ever try the Casstrom knives? They seem amazing.
+mermaniel not yet!
mermaniel just bought one this week and it's absolutely amazing. So far anyway.
Could you do review of the roselli UHC Carpenter knife or UHC Hunting knife. I would love to know is that knife worth to buy to my go to Bushcrafting knife. Thanks
Yeah, i totally agree. That knives are absolutely awesome and i would love to the how they compare in a typical dbk video.
Nice sellection of knives guys. My most used knive is the Mora Companion, this is just incredible for all kind of cutting tasks.
I just bought the Boker Terra Africa Outdoor and I can recommend this one also. As phase-out model it is now in the 100+ Euro range.
Maybe you can talk a little bit more about the blade length and thickness.
Regards EM
We'll check the knife out!
Maybe we'll expand a bit more in a new video soon. We just tested out the mora garberg and that knife is incredible. If you like the mora companion you'll probably marry the mora garberg!
Cheers man
Hi!!!!!
Hello!! I wanted to ask you an opinion.
I do mountaineering, trekking and ski mountaineering, I would like a fallkniven knife to carry around, I am undecided between s1x and a1x or pro series.
But the sheat of the last one lose the knife?
which would you recommend me ??
Thinking about having to make firewood, but few times.
thank you!!
don't hate esee; they're good People and have set the bar for costumer service and warrenty in the industry :-) Great vid and can't wait to see #2. I just made a 50cm strop and it makes stropping so much easier. Do you already have a vid about convex sharpening on a stone? If not, can you recommend or make one? Cheers.
Hey Michiel, I don't hate Esee as a company but I really don't understand 1095 @ 55-56HRC on their smaller knives. They just don't hold an edge in a normal edge geometry. I would understand this hardness on large choppers as they need a lot of flexibility.
We don't have a video where we really explain how to sharpen or make a convex edge. I would suggest watching some of virtuovice his videos. In this video I make a secondary convex on a kitchen knife and some regular convex sharpening some outdoor knives ua-cam.com/video/zA0SOclSVrc/v-deo.html
Awesome review guys. Just subbed. I'm just about to drop some good money on a high end knife. Been collecting for a while, mostly lower end edcs and I have my Moras. I'm from Canada, and the price differences are quite different. You should check out some Cosmo knives. He's a Canadian who makes some really nice knives. Pretty pricey though. But I learned a lot and am probably going with a Bark River. Cheers
Wow yea we checked them out! we'll see what we can do to get one or two!
Great video, keep up the good work ! Where do you buy your knives ?
Right now the Jaakari Puukko 110 is my knife of choice. Its nothing fancy, but the handle is perfect. No hot spots and very comfortable. 80CrV2, 59 HRC steel. and for the price there is no competition $65 USD shipped.
I own one as well. It feels great but I have yet to test it
Have you guys assessed the Fallkniven TK5/TK6 and the TK1/2 all in 3G? I'd like to hear your thoughts about them. These are crazy little fixed blades! I think I even prefer the little tk5/6 more than their brilliant big brother tk1/2. I possess the hands of a Silverback Gorilla so I just use a three finger grip on them. So small it can ride fully concealed in its enclosed leather sheath in your front pocket.
It makes a very good hunting knife from what i've heard. We don't have one sadly however we did own a F1 in 3G a long time ago. We sold it because it was chippy... sadly this is so long ago that I don't dare to conclude if we sharpened it wrong back then or if it was actually brittle. still so much to try... that's why I hide away from ebay biddings haha.
-stay sharp mate!
love my tk5. pocket sized beast!
Yes the 3G can be a bit chippy out of the box, but like many Fallkniven blades, once the slightly toothy 3G factory edge is taken back two or three times, the chipping finishes forever leaving you with a beast! It's just my experience anyway. Having said that I do agree that the COS steel, while slightly softer, is so refined that it can take an even more wicked edge especially in the field using my belt. Maybe it's one of the best all round steels ever put into a knife? I got the first batch of A1 pro and S1 pro, and they both had the rattly/slightly loose rubber handles...and Fallkniven fixed the problem with pure class...absolutely no questions or fuss...new knives - not even a receipt was required. The new batch is nigh on perfection!
I'm currently looking for the perfect camping/survival knife for me and it's really difficult haha. There are so many choices it's not easy to find THE perfect blade. Moras are all over the place when you're looking for a knife and I'm still not sure if I should rely on one of those for survival. Something is telling me that their price is too good to be true and that I need to pay more for something way better. I want to buy one knife and then use that one for everything, for the rest of time (hopefully). So I'm willing to spend a bit of money, but forget about 400$+ knives, those are unfortunately out of my league. My max would be 160$-180$, but at that price I wonder if the knife that I would get would be better than the Mora Bushcraft Black for example and justify a higher price tag.
Oliver's World in that price range I would personally choose the Becker BK2 or the Mora Garberg
Nice job guys!! Can you plz compare 3G steel with 3v ? Witch is the best ?
+Man Dan 3v! We once had 3v but that really wasn't our thing.
Dutch Bushcraft Knives Thanks a lot guys for answering ! I appreciate it !!
I’ve rewatched all of your videos in order to decide which Fallkniven Pro series knife to break the bank on, so far no luck :(
What are there 3 or 4 in tje Pro series? Is Falkniven Modern Bowie in the Pro series?
Also, are Falkniven knives short in the handle? I have big mitts! I rrally don't want expensuve premium knife n its small for my hand. I love Fox River hunting knife but it doesn't work for my hand. I wish I could get Fox River II LT! I love Fox River EXT-1
@@ssunfish yes the MB is in the Series ! And more or less i would say the kk to but without box
@@ssunfish no the s is a bit thin but the A1 has a meaty comfortable handle of course !
i got a smiths sharpener for the mora comanion is it ok for that , like i said i went with mora after watching you torture test cause every other knife i have is either bent or the tip broke off plus im no expert, i dont know about the different metals and also dont know much about sharpening so it would be a good idea ob sharpening a mora the easy way and about the metals used and what they are capable of, Thanks in advancs
Why don't you like Esee knives? I'm thinking of buying a Esee 6 or RAT 7 from Ontario knives.
1095 @ 55 -56HRC is a no go for me. this hardness should only be used for large choppers but never in smaller knives. I had an esee 4 and it had worse edge retention than a 12 dollar Mora. I tried out different angles and geometries but I could not be satisfied with it. The 440C version should be better but unless you live in the USA it's still much to expensive for what you get IMO.
Nothing against the company itself.
- Stay sharp!
Great reviews, but 13:34 Cocobolo is not a softer wood, it has a Janka hardness rating of 2960 which is harder than most woods you will ever come across. Desert Ironwood is 3260 so not that much harder. For comparison, Black Walnut is 1010, Red Oak 1290, White oak 1350, Hickory (one of America's hardest common woods) 1820.
i think its not Cocobolo...the knifes comes with "santos wood"
hi DBK I'm going to be buying some fallkniven soon but it's a hard choice I got the f1 vg10 and love it so I'm getting myself the s1 and the a1 but don't know if to get the vg10 or the pro's duno if the thickness of the pro's is too much? what are your favourite? and does the thickness effect your skills? thanks love the vids
+Natalie Toner hey natalie, I love the pro series but they are indeed thicker. The CoS takes an amazing sharp edge though. The a1 pro feels less nimble than the regular a1 but I don't feel this way with the f1 pro
If you could only keep 1 knife from your collections which would it be?
Subbed and Liked. I really Like your Bark River videos.
2016:"buying a knife to put in a glass case is weird, I would never do it"
2021: *buys a Rocksted 😂
Just more to show how far y'all have come 💪 love you guys!
Great video dudes. Still using my mini aurora in cpm3v. Still sharp as hell. Keep the videos coming.
would love to have my hands on that mini aurora. I am a big fan of my regular aurora.
thanks a lot for the compliment mate! we appreciate it!
this is my favourit video because it helped me get in to hunting knifes 😀 thank you
Hunting knives are my favorite. I think because of the scale. Thicker than kitchen knife, not very long and heavy...extra usable
What techniques can you use to keep steel knives from rusting?
I understand they used to wax the blades. Does that really work?
Is oil the only answer to rust prevention with steel blades?
Mineral oil works well. Depends on the stainless too. S35vn, m390, h1, n680 all steels that would be really hard to rust. Just wipe them dry and they should be okay unless you live in a humid environment
i am very split between the s1 pro vs the a1 pro, which do you two prefer? what jobs does one excel in more than other? to me the pros an cons would be based around weight and chopping power. the s1 pro is 8.8 ounces vs the a1pro's 12.8 ounces, (i am used to carrying the esee 5 which is a whopping 16 ounces though i don't really like walking all day in the yard with it and mainly use it for abusive stuff) i recently bought a fallkniven s1 pro and have used it a couple of times, it feels like the perfect companion knife (about 5 inches, light, able to stay on you ALL the time) I'm wondering if I'm missing out by not saving for the a1 pro with better chopping power and extra inch.
if you could have one knife only which one would it be?
could you carry an a1 pro all day? or would the 4 more ounces really be that noticeable and make you prefer the s1pro?
open to all opinions.
Hey mate,
If I had to pick one knife it would be the S1 pro. I do love my A1pro more because it's my chopper/batonning knife and my F1pro is my small knife. Mikkie would probably love the s1pro more. I wouldn't have any trouble carrying my A1pro all day. Heavy knives only become a burden if they aren't comfortable on your belt and that is mostly caused by too big pants of a loose belt. The only annoyance would be that the sheath can swing a bit because of the length.. you can fix this with a simple lanyard around your leg and trough the sheath's underside though.
Thanks so much for the insight, I'm actually thinking about selling my esee 5 because it doesn't chop as well as i thought it would mostly due to the length and handle and that it wasn't specifically made for bushcraft but more like a stabbing prying thing. i really love the s1 pro and carry it daily, i carry mine sheath in pocket then running the belt through the loop. never swings and is very comfortable. great video hope to see your channel grow !
Great video and info love Fallkniven also after some of your tests and vids I ordered an EnZo Elmax great price and knife :D Also did you guys ever look into eickhorn-solingen or have any experience ? Have been scouting some of those knifes and seen some insane tests and performance.
Thanks a lot mate! I hope the EnZo will serve you for a long time. The only eikhorn I have is this old german dagger www.legacy-collectibles.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/b/_/b_055_6_2.jpg
Not planning on testing it though haha. Their modern knives look kinda odd from what i've seen but they have a lot of years of experience so I wouldn't be surprised if their performance is awesome.
i' m going to buy a new knive for bushcrafting, what do you mean fällkniven f1 pro or the f1 d?
is it possible to use mora companion spark to make a Sweden torch ? I mean if there are difficult for the wood is too thick to cut in .thank you very much
great vid this one helped me to buy my own
what did you go for?
@@craggerrs bro this was 3years ago I love lost it now
Hi guys, thanks for the great vid. It is very informative and in a honest way. I'm a follower of DBK a long time but I never saw some informations about a Fällkniven Northern light series. I'm from the bavarian outback (germany) and have a lot of german (steel) knives, but now I'm searching for informations about bark river, fällkniven pro series or tre kroner or NL-series and it is very hard to make a decission. thanks for your good looking vids.
Greets from bavaria,
phil
Guten Tag Phil!,
thanks for the compliment. We have looked at the fallkniven Northern light series but they are just more fancy looking f1, s1 and a1's. The look more appealing but the handle material isn't care free. The handle takes blood, dirt and stuff like that much more easily. Some people like the worn look but for us it was the reason to stick with the regular ones. The TK2 just doesn't really appeal to me. It must be a good hunting knife from what i've heard though.
Good luck with making your hard decision!
I will be buying more bark river knives, I have two so far and love the quality of them. I have listened to your recommendations regarding the steel choice and unfortunately some of the particular knives they dont give you a choice on the steel choice, the Bark River Knives: Phoenix II for instance only comes in 1095 steel :(
That was only because the repiutation of the company was good, but they didnt offer any models in 1095 so they developed the Phoenix series to supply 1095 lovers with Barkies
Thanks dudes! Really helped me in choosing my new knife :)
+PvPbomber009 you are welcome!
I just subscribed to your channel. I'm just curious about a few things. Would you use a more expensive knife like a Bark River for fero rod fore starting? I just ordered a Classic drop point hunter in CMP 3V. Also, how did you guys get started in you expert knife enthusiasm?
I would use any knife to spark a ferro rod but I would never use the edge for striking. I always use the spine of the blade.
You will be very happy with your knife! Bark river and CPM-3V are awesome!
I was always into knives but as a kid we just had cheap army replica knives. Later on when we were 16 we really wanted a quality knife so we started watching videos about knives and found out about this whole world of steels. We didn't have money to take our knives to a knife sharpener so we decided to learn it ourselves. We watched a lot of virtuovice and we just got hyped about knives as well haha.
@@DutchBushcraftKnives AWESOME. Dr Waco has taught a lot and helped many!! His videos are very satisfying and he puts so much thought into function and performance. He's on the professor side of knives like you Maarten, but DBK is bslsnced with Mikkie backing you up! You're a great combo better than the sum of parts!
What is the steel in the falkniven pro?? Great videos 👍🏼👊🏼
Thanks a lot Kabir!
The steel in the pro series is called CoS a cobalt steel. It takes an incredible sharp edge and is very easy to sharpen. The edge retention is also pretty sweet. I think it's one of the best balanced steels out there.
Can you list the price range and which knives fall under each price range in the description please?!
+Kevin Yezek it takes a lot of time for us to do these things in every video. I'm sorry
Did i miss the Bark River Aurora or was it not in there? If so, why? Btw, whats your opinion on 154cm steel? cheers
I have an old video on the Aurora but as it is one of my favourites I should probably do another one in the future.
Hey you guys ever look into the Benchmade bushcrafter? I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts
+James A we would very much like to try one. It's definitely on our list!
Your english is like the one from native speakers. How does it come?
I know that most of the dutch people speak english (nearly perfect).
Beside of that: extremely informative video!
Hey thanks a lot! I actually learned English from playing online games as a kid haha. Mikkie was raised bilingual. English lessons begin in 5th grade of pre school here as well so everyone can speak basic English Here at least
Holy smoke.
In yet another eBay bidding moment of craziness, for a good price, I bought a mint 'Busse' Anniversary Straight Handle Battle Mistress. I went in relatively blind and have no idea about
Busse...but It would seem to be like an American muscle car of knives. I've handled it and it's a big beefy 11.5inch blade in full flat grind in INFI steel with a full tang G10 handle. I'm sure you guys know. It came with an Azwelke sheath.
Would you guys like to do an assessment of it?
haha that's a bloody sword mate. Busse is kinda hard to get here in the Netherlands. I would like to try INFI steel because I haven't had it yet but the Busse' Anniversary Straight Handle Battle Mistress is too big for our use. It should make a very sturdy survival blade for sure.
-stay sharp!
Yeah true the Busse is a bit big and heavy, but I thought I'd try it because I live in the sub tropics and out of necessity some of my main heavy users are an old military Martindale Golok, a Svord Golok and a special type of big Australian cane machete. It'll be interesting to see how the Busse performs.
Keep up the great work. Cheers!
keithmckeith Nice! I really like goloks. They are very capable choppers. Thanks a lot mate!
please make a review on a esee knife and why you dont like them. nice work guys
+Energispecialisten I'm not buying one again haha
That is some good advice for buyers. Keep up the good work :)
- Martin
Thanks! We do our best
how can you guys even get 10disslikes???? wow good work on channel love it soo badly
+System HD haha thanks a million mate!
Have you guys done anything with Solingen knives? if not, could you? 😋
So much choice !
Whats up brothers i love your channel.Im Dio Pasalo and i would like to know wc one do you preffer from Bark River knifes for fix blade like bushkrafter or the bravo 1?
The bravo 1 without a ramp. It's one of the best knives ever made
hi DBK thanks for the reply and one last question I'm also going to get an enzo trapper but my pickle with this one is steel choice I can not get elmax every were out of stock and s30v is very hard to get but I might be able to get it but I can definitely get d2 and n690co which one is better and what grind would suit the steel best scandi or flat thanks guys
I would say wait for the elmax version. It is a lot better than both N690co and D2. N690Co is like VG-10 so it's a decent steel but not nearly as good as elmax.. I would suggest going with the scandi!
So, what would you choose? Fallkniven S1Pro or Bark River Elmax Steel?
impossible question. next one please.
hahaha it really is a hard question. let me think this over for a year.
@@DutchBushcraftKnives lol, any thoughts yet three years later..? Wondering about an Aurora in cpm cruwear..have you tried theirs, and do you have an opinion on it.? Edit--pushed submit too fast, forgot to add, Love your Channel, Awesome videos, you guys are my favorite! 👍🤙
Hi. I’m new to your channel. Really enjoying your channel. And I am a am a woman. 😀
What is a good all around knife from bark river for processing wood field dressing skinning carving etc? The one knife that is decent in all..
I would say the Bark river gunny is CPM-3V. We love it a lot. Get one with liners though as you want the handle to be a little thicker.
What did you choose and what are your thoughts since?
Thanks guys. Great video.
So, why a laminated CoS instead of Elmax?
Hello guys, sorry if I make you constantly questions but my English is pretty bad. M4 the M390 is much more difficult to grind compared to VG10? that's why I do not feel excellent as knife? With the DC4 is very difficult to sharpen M390? Thank you guys.
Hey Michele, The DC4 uses ceramic and diamond. Both are very hard and much harder than M390 steel. The dc4 should be very capable of sharpening the M390. However, VG-10 is much more easy to sharpen and will sharpen up faster on the DC4 than M390.
Hope this helps!
Which it is preferable according to you between the two as steels of knives of this size?
