Nice. I love my I-Box. One quick tip for gluing up the fingers is to lay all the sides down with the inside facing up. Put some painter's tape right up to the edge of the fingers to prevent the squeeze out from getting inside the box. Then simply apply glue to all the fingers facing up, no need to go into the joint as the opposing finger will have glue on the correct mating surface. Much faster and cleaner. Keep up the good work.
Ooh good project! Great for craft shows but also for the upcoming holidays as gifts. I love how you used the shavings, nice touch.
Thanks April!
Wow
I didn't know we exported Pine to the USA.
That stuff grows on trees around here.
Nice wine box.
Cheers
Peter
Ha! New Zealand pine is way more beautiful than North American pine.
Great project Dave. I also really like New Zealand pine, nice to work with.
Thanks Linn! I just got done talking to our mutual friend Matthew Teague. ;)
This is the video that began me following the Drunken Woodworker..... I always thought that name was a weird choice 🤔I like Make Something much better.
6yrs later I just dusted off my I-Box to build a resting place for my best friend.
His name is Tut... King Tut the chiwennie. I have to send him to heaven tomorrow morning 🌄😌
Thank you David for years of inspiration, motivation and entertainment.
❤️❤️❤️thank you. Sorry to hear about Tut.
Very nice David, those would make a great gift!
Carl Jacobson Thanks Carl!
I see those as being some Christmas presents for friends and family. Thanks for sharing the idea David!
GuysWoodshop Thanks!
Man, that Incra jig looks sweet! Great wine boxes and I hope you make lots of sales. Shavings are much better than packing peanuts.
Thanks Steve!
Nice project, and the shavings are a fine touch. I bought the Ibox but haven't used it much after I made a batch of drawers for shop cabinets. It is a nice jig, I need to get it out and get familiar with it again.
I've thought about making one, or a dozen, of these for some time. As soon as I get the Lincoln Logs done... getting so close!
Great project David, love the simple yet elegant look! You are a master at batchable design
Good job presenting~! I'll look closer at that box joint jig. I have a few similar on consignment. I used miter/ spline joints though. Did a few with simple rabbets too. I have been experimenting with making the slide top of 3/4 mat'l, then let the finger hole also work as a bottle balance. Noticed when you clamped the sides, you have the clamp (almost?) over the end of the board. (5:26). That won't pull the sides in when you have finger joints, of course, and I don't think you will have much luck making the board shorter with a clamp! Move in from the finger joint a quarter inch.
Awesome. I almost bought one of these jigs earlier today at my local Woodcraft. If they actually had it in stock, I probably would have come home with it.
I like it! Expensive little guy but I like it.
Nicely done David, great to see the incra in action and on a really good project.
Thanks!
I used a lot of that wood when I started woodworking and love it. I but our bed with it, matching nightstands and much more. Very nice to work with but expensive. Thanks for the great project idea. We give wine from a local vineyard and this would make them extra special.
Awesome! Gave me the idea to make a wooden wine bottle to go with the box. Thanks for sharing.
Congrats David first Video as a married man, loved the project.
:) Thanks!!
Welcome back David. Congratulations on the wedding. You are addicted to making videos. You couldn't even stay away a full week. Also, this may be the first alcohol project where your "demo" bottles weren't opened. Another great little gift project David.
Kelly Burns THANKS! Haha! One of them will be opened this weekend!
Another great show and project.
Thanks Russ!
Great video David. I'm working on a few shop upgrades and video ideas. You're an inspiration!
Derek Conway Thanks!
I'm loving your craft fair project ideas! Thanks!
Thanks! More coming!
OH YEAH NEW ZEALAND!!!! at least I have access to the pine. this stuff grows only a few kms away form us. Awesome project.
Great project!
Thanks!
Hopefully now I can make enough of these to justify buying the I-Box in the first place! Thanks for the inspirado, David!
Randy Allaway That was my thought as well. Now that I've used it a couple of times I think it's worth it.
Cool project. Like that box joint jig, too
Awesome video! I have added this to my list of projects to do and will pick up your plans ! Again great video!!!
Very cool wine box! I like the use of the box joint jig-when a project calls for it I'll have to decide between paying for that incra or making my own!
Hey David, I don't know if it helps you with the Incra guys, but you sold the Incra iBox jig to me. After comparing all the different options, diy and factory-made, your video finally made it clear; I needed the iBox. It arrived today and I hope to get started using it tomorrow. Thanks
Thanks! I have no affiliation with Incra although they did send me an email saying they liked the video.
Loved the shavings idea. This box must smell really good.
Cheers!
Mmmmm. Shavings!
That Home Depot pine is pretty good stuff to work with.
Me cries in 2021
Great build, really like the boxes.
Thanks!
I have watched this video a few times and it gets me every time. "Now we begin cutting our fingers" Wait what? Oh. you mean the....
Thanks Dave! Great video! Just bought the plans.
Joseph Muench Thanks Joseph!
A plug for Stumpy and Mithas, I can make 4 boxes at once and 1/10th the time it would take to use the incra jig. No joke. Granted I do it all the time, but still. They are both worth a look.
If You See Kay! Love that stuff nice choice. Great vid on the iBox jig. I bought it and have yet to crack it open, thanks for the inspiration.
use cedar for the shavings, nice aromatic addition.
Once again, you hit one out of the park..That could be a good idea to include with my hand carved Santa's. To use as a storage case? Thanks again..Also been enjoying your sales pitches for Highland Woodworking.
Thanks Tom! Highland Woodworking is a great family owned business! I love working with them.
The box was awesome but the shaving top the project off, Great idea.
Great video David. The I-Box Rox.
Thanks! I'm really liking the I-Box! Expensive but works great!
Pretty neat!
Thanks!
Great Video. I have two questions though. At 1:156 you mention drawing line on the bottom on the cut pieces. At 2:46 you say that the lines must face the inside. If the lines are on the bottom of the pieces how can they face the inside? Does inside mean toward the blade away from the operator or does inside mean moving the wood from left to right making the cuts?
Sorry if I am not making myself clear. I am a beginning work worker and need very clear instructions so I do not mess things up.
Ring, no ring, ring, no ring. What's it gonna man?? Lol great build like always
Kevin Riddle Good eye!! Thanks!
Nice work. I really like the look of small box joints. You should definitely engrave one with your router. Share that one the next WWWR show.
Seth Gee Thanks Seth!
Wooo New Zealand!
"Now we begin cutting our fingers" Umm no thanks.
Looks like it is well worth the money for the Jig, would it work for Table saws that the Arbor is to short for a Dado stack? Thanks for sharing David
Yes, you'll just need to use a blade that cuts a flat bottom. I have used the jig with a single blade.
Wow, that would be a great project for some of that thin wood I sent you.
Awesome video, thanks! With the wine box, do u have to line up the groove for the lid (side panels) with a inner part of the back joint so it doesn't show on the outside? & is that why u don't groove the end piece too?
Great project David. I noticed your front guard on the Incra took o few hits, same thing happened to mine, o well.
Battle scars! I didn't have them lined up properly the first time I used it.
there is a ring on your finger now! congrats!
Thanks!
If you wanted to use this to make drawers that use box joints, what would you say is the maximum height the jig can safely handle? In other words, what's the widest drawer you could safely make?
It's interesting that many of your projects are related to liquor? I wonder why? Like the way you used stock lumber and cut it up so much it became a large quantity to meet your needs! The Incra only cuts one piece at a time correct? Whereas the others you mentioned will cut more than one (depending on thickness of course)? Very nice project. Thanks for sharing.
MRrwmac You probably could cut 2 pieces at the same time. I haven't tried it and it wasn't mentioned in the directions.
¡Wonderful work! Thanks for sharing.
Francisco Corona Thank you!
Nice. You only cut the bottom rebate on the long sides - do the short sides not need to provide support .? Cutting a rebate with finger joints of course exposes the cut in the fingers on the outside unlike a miter joint.
Great video. Is the placement of the groves critical so the groves don't show up on the ends after assembly?
Thanks! Yes. they need to be only on the 2 long pieces and on the short finger if that makes sense. The 2 end pieces do not get grooves cut.
Great vid man
I'm a noob but could you also use a chisel to chip out the fingers as well?
Hey great project!
What brand dado blade do you own?
It looks like you do your woodworking in your basement near your boiler? If it has a pilot light starting system be careful of sawdust near open flame! Sawdust is explosive in large quantitys.
I'm using the Frued dado set. Costs around $80 USD. I try and keep all sawdust away from the pilot lights! Thanks!
I also have the ibox. Have you tried using it on a router table?
great project, I wish I had paid better attention when you said "now we begin cutting our fingers" my wife typed this. lol
Just a quick question, how to did make the backing to the box? Was it another slip fit piece or was it a board ripped to fit?
cool david
Alan Rodriguez Thanks!
Hi Dave. Do you have a sketch about the thing you use on your table saw (you can see it at 1:26min). What stop do you use and which rail for it?
Great video by the way.
Regards from germany
Steffen
I'm using this Kreg trac and stop system: amzn.to/11w4HqH
I will be doing a build video of this sled in January.
Very cool. I need that jig.....and something better than my ryobi $130 take saw
Great stuff, David! I know what I'll be making my in-laws for the Holidays. Now that you've got some experience with it, how long does it take you to change out the whole blade/cartridge assembly for the dado configuration on the SawStop?
Thanks! Probably 3-4 minutes. Maybe less once you do it a few times.
Hey David,
Any reason you chose pine over your usual walnut/maple combo?
I wanted to show something that could be made with wood from a home center.
2:39 "Now we begin cutting our fingers ..." No, don't do it - you'll trigger the SawStop!
David - Do you have a video on how you made your table saw sled?
+Jamie English Unfortunately I do not. Maybe someday!
Is it possible to make different size fingers without a dado stack? Or are you limited to the kerf of whatever blade you're using?
Mike Bryan Yes you can but it takes a home made jig. I have never tried it.
Ah, so it's not possible to use the Incra jig without a dado stack. Bummer.
Yeah. :(
do your plans include measurements for all types of wine bottles? or just the standard?
It slightly bigger than the standard to accommodate different sizes. We happened to have 6 bottles in the house and all 6 fit. BUT there are plenty of sizes this won't fit as well.
Drunken Woodworker
gotcha, not a hard thing to accommodate for though. and a few inches here and there. thanks!
I was startled briefly at 2:40 when you said something about cutting our fingers. Ouch!
How did you get rid of the glue on the inside?
when I try this, I get a lot of tear out. How do you avoid that when cutting the fingers?
Backing board behind the jig
Kewl. At that price I guess it doesn't pay to make your own jig.
...and....nice sled. ( remind me never to say that to any girls at the mall...I can't shake those Segways with the flashing lights like I used to )
David, Shari and I would like to batch up some of these for Christmas gifts.
The link to the plans has expired. Can they be found elsewhere?
Many thanks!
You can get them here: makesomethingstore.com/product/wine-box-plans/
Thanks!
Make Something thanks. will do!
you should see yourself today. man what a change you have come to. hey great jobs then great jobs now.
growth!
Another great video, thanks.
How's that PayPal thing coming along?
JimE
Thanks! Should be ready by Jan 1st.
Понятное видео.
One can only dream of having $1,000’s of equipment!
I don't own or want to purchase a dado stack. Is it possible to use the I-Box with a standard single blade?
+Josef Roesler yes but the fingers will be as small as the thickness of your blade.
+Make Something and I'm looking to fund out if there's a way to work it so you can make multiple passses for wider slots and fingers.
+Make Something Yeah, they got back to me and said it wouldn't be possible. So I bought a Craftsman router table combo for $120 today. That oughta solve the problem. My crappy old Ryobi router never worked right anyway, so it'll be nice to have a decent little router table. And be able to make nice finger joints.
+Derek Richline I don't need it.
#Make Something Great project David, love the simple yet elegant look! You are a master at batchable design @Dave Starr
Where can I find the sled that you have?
It's in my shop.
I made one of these for our Cards Against Humanity set of 1100+ cards.
Sound bad when you say " NOW IT'S TIME TO CUT OUR FINGER" LOLz
The only thing that threw me off from this video is he doesn't show that he cuts off the little extra dado on the top of the box.
Estancia. Blegh.
Damn $160 for ibox was cheap. It’s $230 now
Yikes!
Please be more drunk next time.
