- This book is, indeed, a giant mess. And I love it.
Here is my review of a book from a series that's very dear to me, Mistborn: The Well of Ascension. I had my first ideas for this video two years ago. I am very happy to finally be able to show it to you!
Don't watch if you didn't read Mistborn Era 1. Book 2 is heavily spoiled and there are references to book 1 and 3.
Keep in mind this video expresses my opinion only and in no way attacks anybody else's.

I like how Brandon explored the idea of a kind, idealistic philosopher ruling a country, and him trying to find the balance between freedom of the people and cold practicality. That really interest me. I love Elend
Wait people were mad at Elend? People disliked this book? What?? It was probably my favorite in the trilogy! I mean I wasn’t thrilled either when he became mistborn but that didn’t happen until the end of the book! Well of Ascension was a ride! A fun time! We got to see Elend learn to become a better king while still doing his best to be a good person! And he and Vin grew closer as a couple and overcame their issues together! The Well of Ascension was awesome!
I didn’t really like it. I felt like everything was just stated and not shown. Vin says she trusts Elend so much but she doesn’t act like it. Vin says she misses Kelsier so much but she never acts like it. The fight scenes were AWESOME though
@@ali_exists1482 ikr, I hate vin so much. She is cool but I still don’t like her at all. In book 1, a mistborn cannot beat another who is using atium. Period. But somehow she beats zane. Too much plot armour imo which makes the character absolutely worthless to me.

That was some of the most interesting moments of the book. The Kandra saying too much.
At last a person who does not send the thing of describing the issue of Vin and Zane as a love triangle, the number of people who think that nonsense is terror. To begin with, those who say that do not seem to have read the book, that is: 1) Vin and Zane's relationship is above all a relationship of interest: Zane needs Vin to save him from his prisons: his father and his madness; and Vin needs to convince Zane to go over to Elend's side, betray his father and thereby obtain a second Mitsborn to protect the Kingdom of Luthadel (which is understandable that Vin seeks this out considering the desperate situation of the Kingdom), and later, that Zane help her to be the Hero of the Ages. In short, Vin herself was seeking Zane's help because she personally felt overwhelmed by the events of Book 2. Objectives that they achieve in a certain sense, since Zane achieves his freedom through the death at the hands of Vin and Vin thanks to his fights with Zane she managed to perfect herself as an assassin and Mitsborn, and managed to defeat the army of Cett, so technically both managed to achieve their interests. 2) Vin at that time from Book 2 is without atium, while Zane is with a lot of that metal (remember how powerful that metal is). In other words, it is understandable that Vin plans to go with Zane so that he does not get angry with her and do something wrong to her or your loved ones (more with Zane's unpredictable nature, making it difficult for Vin to interpret what to expect from Zane), since if she dies , Elend and the band will follow after her, which Vin obviously does not want because of the deep and intense love that the girl has for her loved one and her family. In conclusion, Vin was looking to go with Zane to protect his own moved ones. 3) Vin has a longing for Kelsier, so she seeks to replace that loss through Zane on a psychological and emotional level due to the great similarity that Zane and Kelsier have. Which is understandable, if one loses someone he loved a lot, the individual's mind will inertia search for an emotional replacement. 4) Vin cannot be classified as hormonal because she never flirt with Zane (since Vin knows how dangerous he is and she does not seek to risk his life in vain), it is Zane who He harasses and court Vin and looks for her all the time, so the hormonal one is Zane. Vin would be the rational one, even when Zane grabs her hand to take her away, she rejects Him. 5) How can they say that there is a love triangle if Vin literally spends the whole book thinking how much she loves Elend with all his soul, how much she wants him to kiss and embrace her, how much she wants the best for him, how much she wants to be useful to his cause. In addition, Vin thinks of a moment that she wishes to be with Elend because he represents peace and happiness for her. 6)And lastly, she has an absolute fear of death, including the deaths she herself causes, and Vin thought perhaps Zane could help her overcome her terror of death and become a more effective Mitsborn, especially considering who are in the middle of a siege. SO yours know, people, stop saying that there is a love triangle in the Well of Ascension, and if you don't believe me, reread the book.

Well, now with respect to the book in general, it seems to me an excellent book, with great characters and a complex and deep plot, hopefully at some point people will get the appreciation it deserves.

I don’t dislike Elend but him becoming mistborn was not what I expected nor wanted from the character. His whole arc is one big teaching moment, throughout the book he just gets punched down and down and just when he learns from his brief time as a leader that his ideal world is impossible and balancing the qualities of a king and the qualities of a philosopher he instead gets given pretty much everything he wanted by making him mistborn. I just prefer Elend as the Everyman and the dynamic between Everyman Elend and Mistborn Vin was so interesting so by giving him mistborn powers you sort of undermine the characters journey and his relationship dynamic. I’ve yet to read the third book but I have hope Brandon has something interesting for the character

Imo, the only reasonable thing Elend ever did was kill Jates and I'm glad he is a mistborn now as the empire can make use of another mistborn ( Ahem Vin doesn't have to save his ass everytime 😅)

For me, i cant decide if i had a hard time reading WOA bc the pacing was a bit slow or bc i felt so stressed towards the third act cause a lot was happening and like the citizens of Luthadel, the entire siege situation wore me out including the looming threat of the newly harmful mists. I was so concerned for the citizens just imagining their pov. The ending was soooo worth it and i loved it after but I'm taking a break from HOA which is more stressful cause the world is ending faster...😢😢

Well of Ascension would probably be in my top 3 of the Cosmere if Zane didn't exist.
First of all, great singing and the video overall cool too! Love it!
Totally agree on Venture boi the number one, he's so nice and great in this book. Also I'd say that law sounds totally logical and reasonable, after being under douchebag ruling of a seemingly impersonation of the douchebagness itself it's only logical to make sure people can get rid of such guy at any point. Freaking power balance is ever-absent tho, so it will struggle to work... But still a great first thing to do

vin would be even younger then 17 in our years as the new calander seems to be more inline with earth years but old calander is throm hte final empire and vin's time wich would be considerably shorter

Just finished the book now and I’m like WTF… I’m mad but okay…ish? Idk. They doomed the world but that’s OK I suppose. They’ll fix it later maybe. Hopefully? Vin and Elend are THE COUPLE. Legends of the fall? Maybe not. Way better than Twilight? for sure! Elend was the best good guy ever. He was like the first time Vin met a noble guy that was real and not a fake a** bi*** trash. I think their love story was pretty good. Like in the first book I was like omg how can she be so stupid like there’s just no way this could ever work! But that moment she said: “I love him” and goes on a rampage and ends up killing that Shain lady Mistborn… and saves Elend I was like OMG!!!!!!! And they made it I guess. Like their love story was as hopeless as the ska rebellion, doomed to fail. But it became a reality somehow by the miracle of hope.
Anyway… should I start reading the third book (already bought it and it’s there) or should I take a break? I feel like I’m a dirty ska full of ash all over. Got the first Stormlight waiting for me and another sci-fi book that’s the second book of the Architects trilogy… first one wasn’t bad. Wasn’t like a 10/10 but a solid 9/10 or more depending on the day. No spoilers for me please! Very funny video made me giggle. And yea Vin is a good girl and very well developed character that acts her age. In this book tho I felt that she became a little meh for a while. Also other characters like stopped growing or something. Like they didn’t develop well for some reason. But it’s still confusing who’s who, like Clubs, Ham, Dockson… Like all 2 books I forgot who was who of those 3 so I confused them 3. Not my man Breeze tho. And his girlfriend the daughter of Cett! Like idk she disappeared at the end lol. Oh and I thought that Terris lady was going to end up being Sazed’s mother/breeder! But… nooooooo! lol
And Marsh man… what the hell man? Why u like that bro? So frustrating…. All throughout the book it was like the big elephant/inquisitors in the room, like WTH happened to them? Like no one was curious about them all book! So frustrating… anyway… yea I probably need a break from Mistborn.

100% agree on the "Not like other girls" thing being horrible in general (as well as YA often being horrible in general), but technically a Gathering of Shadows isn't YA* and the "not like other girls" part kind of represents an attempt at writing a nonbinary character before the vocabulary for that kind of thing exists.
Which you can kind of tell if you're cisn't, but which is definitely extremely low-key and something cis people especially would struggle with (though the issues of weather cis people need to be catered to in any and all fiction is also something to consider in that context).
*Which is to say, it's written by an author that usually writes YA and boy does it show, but it isn't specifically marketed at YA, it just kind of falls under the category of any non-male author being considered YA basically the second they don't write the most serious, grimdark fantasy epic (combined with her general medicore writing which is typical of YA).

The only problem i had with elend in this book is why there isn't an emergency clause where due to political issues he could establish his absolute rule until the three armies were dealt with.
tbf, this was the first time in their recorded history there was a constitutional, well anything, and all Elend had to go off of were philosophy books. I'd give him a little grace on that point. It would have been more unbelievable for him to just come up with the perfect democracy right from the start.

Ehhhhhhh, still the worst, not only Mistborn, but overall Cosmere Novel for me. Mostly for how the first 2/3 so little actually happens that matters beyond running around in circles dealing with the same issues over and over while I'm just waiting for this real, actual plot of whatever was going on that the Lord Compass warned about to get going. Also it has Zane the Emossassin, flat out the WORST character in the entire Cosmere. Sorry, but the only time I felt anything but eye rolling exasperation at him was when Vin gloriously put him out of everyone's misery.
But, it does have a lot of great stuff too, including the shear glory that is Pupper Kandra! Second best character in the Cosmere after Sazed for me! As much as I hated any scene between Vin and Zane, I LOVED every single moment between PK and her! For shame failing to mention him!
Daddy Hate Sink..... hey now he isn't totally worthless!.... He gave us the amazing thrill and joy of seeing Vin completely bisect both him, and the horse he rode in on! Do kind of feel bad about the horse though....
Elend, I agree, he was trying to be a legit good, caring ruler. He just had issues with 1. Recognizing the difference between the ideal way things should be, and the reality of how things actually are, and 2. He was not good at projecting authority and acting like a leader. Tyndwyl mostly fixed the second, and he came to realize the first. Speaking of, Tynd is one of the characters I am the most uncertain how I feel about. I loved her when she was interacting with every character... except Elend where she came off as bitchy and unhelpful, and her 'lessons' weren't even good. She just gave a list of "All good rulers do this!" but she was just spouting 'do this' without addressing WHY and actually dealing with the root cause of Elend's issue.
Jastes..... dude tried to set an army of raging monsters loose on a city full of innocent people... yeah he deserved that.
