Keep this accident in mind the next time you are diverted to another airport, and don't complain.
I used to change my flights when the destination airport had severe thunderstorms. It’s not as easy to do now.
@@eucliduschaumeau8813 And the airline will charge an hefty fee to reschedule!
Fun fact: the actor playing the copilot - Stephen Bogaert - is also the narrator for the Canada and U.S. broadcast versions of the show.
Interesting. Doesn't sound like him.
@@midgie1166 this is the british version of the show i think
He also played a Captain over 10 years later in the Grand Canyon episode.
And, we're supposed to think he's highly intelligent because he has a Brit accent.
@@billolsen4360wait, they’re not all brilliant?
Pilots have So Much pressure on them to be on time and to prevent delays! We have a friend who had been a pilot for an airline for about a year. He had been a private pilot for many years. He was delayed (no fault of his own) getting to a distant airport where he had to pilot a flight somewhere. He didn't make it in time. They fired him. It was the first, and last, time he was late! Airlines know that passengers are most vocal about being delayed. They should make an announcement in bad weather like..."There is dangerous weather ahead and we will not risk your wellfare by continuing ahead. Sorry folks but we have to divert to XYZ airport to keep you safe." Who could be mad at That!?
I feel bad for your friend. As to "Who could be mad at That!?"--there are a lot of idiots who can't see beyond their own preferences.
I agree
Some passengers don’t appreciate the gravity of the situation that pilots are facing . Pressure from the airline the pilots work for and pressure take passengers to their destinations . The woman that said pilots were playing chicken with their lives is partially right & wrong . Yes they should have used an alternative airport to land but the pilots are under pressure to deliver the service . Anyway the loss of life is no joke . I’m sorry for everyone involved but not American Airlines . ❤️
Looking at that wreck, it's hard to believe so many passengers survived! No one likes to think this, but if I was the Captain in this case, I'd rather have died than to face all the trauma. 😥
Yeah
He got what was coming to him. Complete idiot thinking he can do a VFR landing in a thunderstorm, with a gutless copilot that didn't say anything to sway the decision to land. For me, I just feel bad for the passengers... its like getting in a car with a dumb and dumber behind the wheel.
I get you
I understand people wanting to get home and be angry but id rather be safe on a flight and not rush /risk it
And stop crying when you have to land in a different airport! It's for your own safety. Either way they would have cried about it, crash or divert
May the victims rest in peace.
Why is there always a steep embankment or steel wall at the end of runways?
Because its better than a giant building/hangar. Some runways have a steep cliff... would you like that instead?
1) where machinery goes when not in use
2) steel is very good at keeping weather out compared to other materials. And it’s fairly cheap
Concrete doesn’t give way in the same way if you are accidentally hitting it you know
Probably because like many large projects, building an airport is a complex balancing act.
Build it too far out where land is cheap and flat - nobody wants to drive 2 hours for a flight
Build it near / in cities - turns out large areas of flat land near/in cities are already developed or super expensive
Even if you somehow find the perfect balance of the above, you still gotta have some sort of wall/fencing in the end for physical security.
stops the plane
My cousin was a firefighter at the scene that evening and still suffers PTSD from what he witnessed.
Why?
He’s a firefighter.
🧑🚒
What does he expect to see?! 😂😂😂😮😮
Please thank him for his service. It is such a difficult but necessary job. ❤
He needs to get a list of the passengers and crew and then pray for as a group; and then pick one name a day and offer up that day's good things, sufferings, and trials for them. Solicit grace for them AND their guardian angels. The Angels knew in advance and did their best to have their assignment ready for their life review ... but remember God owns all of us, our life, our bodies, our relationships, etc. When HE decides our trial period is over it is the act of perfect love.

That's mean 😮
Why wouldn't they just divert to a different airport ffs?
Tunnel vision. Happens to everyone.
Get-there itis doctrine between those old generations of pilots
It's about money as always.
They also have to get permission. They can’t just decide that on a whim
That's what I been saying 👍👍👍
Dearing this whole crash landing I didn't hear anything about the reverse thrusters being activated after tuch down..
Me either.
They weren't used, only brakes. Watch 36:43 - you'll see the pilots are touching the ground too late. He's also simply going too fast - 160kn when he should be around 130. Ironically manual brakes are probably the worst option, because you're landing on a slip 'n slide. Manual brakes are done AFTER the spoilers and reversers... when you reach about 80kn.
I thought the same thing. I don;t get it. Maybe because they were dealing with the sideslip in the air and then on the ground? Crazy. And so sad.
All they had to do was to land at a different airport.
Exactly. Delaying and rerouting flights because of weather is common.
It's not that simple for a pilot.
If you land on a different airport pilots get blamed by the airline for all the cost + all on board will also be mad for landing on a different airport even if it was for their safety, and after all some pilots don't get paid and be blamed by the airline.
@@Cranford_Blaze and there is peer pressure - "well flight xyz got in that night, why didn't you guys?".
@@Cranford_Blaze Much better to endanger the passengers and your crew and yourself.
Renee is the ultimate Karen. Caught up in her own self importance. She'd hurt her hand if she played the victim card any harder.

@@Chrisguru300 the passengers are kinda annoying they make it sound that the captain wanted to crash
These always have good actors which I think is important to portray the situation, the communication and confusion with accuracy. That is important in regard to the human factor of the truth inside the cockpit. Obviously we have cvr’s but seeing it acted out really helps put you there psychologically.
Never ceases to amaze me how many expert passenger’s there are?
Doesn’t take a CPL to work out that planes, bad weather and poor visibility aren’t a great mix.
Love how they say southern part of America are prone to severe weather then show a satellite image of Illinois and Indiana lol.
"Want to find a way to hurt them" She's brave enough to speak the truth.
39:20 hang on a sec. The captain was also being badgered by an overconfident 1St officer saying its all good. In this accident I lay it clearly at the first officer being over confident and a Captain taking a subsidiary roll.
not overconfident in my opinion, he was a very poor communicator. The captain was completely lost. Unfortunately, the FO was junior and didn't understand what he needed to do to help the captain out.
there could also be a seniority issue, where a junior will often support, agree, and comply with a senior without stating their opinions.
ridiculous and irresponsible pilots
Only full forgiveness can set you free! The survivors do not have to get stuck emotionally. They can move on through full forgiveness of the captain.

“The plane was really rocking and rolling a lot!
The plane was very unstable.
I don’t know what made me so aware that we were going to have a problem.”

This was a good episode.
43:09
That’s not a controversial decision!
The first officer lied!
🤥
It’s on the cockpit voice recorder!! 😡
Should the controller have let them land?
I don't think they have the power to say no. Only to advise the weather and such.
There's no an auto arm spoiler option for that cases ?
This was highly avoidable accident
Question: Why didn't the copilot take control when he could see the runway but the pilot couldn't?
1999. Copilot not so good?
A 100,000 lb plane going over 100 miles an hour must have been very scary 😢
Man that First officer actor was in American Psycho. The lawyer in the last scene
Gregory Feith is like the NTSB GOAT. Dude is a total badass.
These two pilot should never be allowed to fly
One died.
Pilots know storms are risky. Why are there crashes yet?
Usually there is a gas station or large pole at the end of the runway. Go figure
Airline pilots don't 'make' their money flying through bad weather, they earn it.
The plane could PROBABLY make it through the alley? It seems profit margins are too slim and competition within the industry too fierce when management make these decisions. And it's across the board- take Boeing ( for example) even the FAA has had to step in to enact specific regulations just for them about the number of aircraft manufactured per month. New software was secretly implemented in the 737 Maxx - just to avoid the down time needed to explain it. Two planes fell out of the sky within 5 months - but no grounding because they'd have lost their competitive advantage over Sky Bus - AY CARUMBA
I don't know why on UA-cam some of these videos are crystal clear, but this one you can barely hear the announcer.
the pilots could have flown to other airports and landed safely
“No I’m not okay, but life goes on.” The mantra of military veterans who’ve been in combat.
Do not feel guilty you did not help others, you did not know if there was going to be an explosion at any moment
Show a little respect
The first officer is a psychopath, disregarding human lives and then lying blatantly after causing the death of so many people. He should never be allowed to fly again.
YouNever get over what happened my heart goes out to the survivors and the families of loss of life
45:40
Rushing leads to tragedy. 🤦♀️ when will they learn?!
47:17
Why didn't the captain hand over control to fresh eyes when the copilot was aware of where the airport was?
I wondered that too. I thought "If You see then take it!"
44:58
That landing looks a little sketchy 😮😂😂
Why didn’t the pilots of 1420 divert? It would’ve been a safer option than to try and force the landing
The Hindenburg 1937 rushed to land also...☠️
I've flown AA from TN to TX a few years ago, and the pilots & stewardesses were nice. However, airport staff left much to be desired and tried charging me almost $100 for losing my suitcase. They also tried charging me extra for my return ticket. I had purchased a RT ticket in TN. The ticket was valid. I had to argue with them Iverson both circumstances. I won, but it wasn't right n it was a hard fight. I didn't appreciate it.
They tried to get you home on time. Obviously nobody wanted for this to happen
The answer is simple. Airports should be legally required to close upon a thunderstorm or other weather situation happening. Essentially broadcast YOU CANNOT LAND HERE.
Cool. So planes which are already in the air, running out of fuel, should just ditch in the ocean?
Lol
@@no_name4796 . Haha. You land elsewhere.
@@jessh5310 it's not that easy. Mine was a very superficial answer, but you cannot just close airports.
First: thunderstorm have levels of dangerousness, and this isn't just a black and white problem. There are tons of variables, which means there is NO precise formula to use to shut an airport
The pilots have all the info and training they need to be able to evaluate if the weather is good enough or not.
Which is why, pilots are the one who needs to make the decision.
Especially when you consider that closing an airport, means there are tons of airplanes which are suddently all forced to take different routes, and it becomes a crazy mess istantly. And that chaos would make deadly mistakes crazy easier.
@@no_name4796 . Well if they continue to land in thunderstorms then some people are going to die. You cannot have it both ways.
@@jessh5310 have you read what i wrote?

A severe case of getthereitis.
Why not divert?
Common sense tells you elevate the plane away from the dangers
of the weather and abort the landing
I blame the airlines and pilots and airports for these deaths and the harm. But, why don't airports have a responsibility to close the airport when conditions exceed safe landing conditions? Also, you can count on corporations like airlines to try to get their money's worth out of the pilots by pushing schedules. I assume the airport corporations are also making decisions based on money, not lives. It is terrible that the pilots and controllers are the ones left holding the bag for these things.
They should have just canceled they flight. However, 11 people lost their lives because of an industry. Corporations love destroying they lives of those who keep them going.
What the heck is a, "shed duel" ?
I have never been in an airplane. After watching this and other videos, I NEVER will. I was in a helicopter once.. I will never do that again. I was sorry to hear of the passenger deaths and it could have been so much worse.
That's too bad. You will never know the wonders the world has to offer. From snow covered mountains in Germany, to the Cathedrals of Europe (and i am not a believer) to the beauty of Australia, to the amazing scenery in New Zeland, to the poignant sadness of the perfect rows of the graves of fallen soldiers in foreign lands. And the magic of meeting new people who live and think differently from you.
I have flown many times. The industry makes the claim that it is safer than driving and certainly, it is safer than driving to a given destination rather than flying.
@@davidlloyd7597 Thank you. I have been saying this for years. There are far too many variables to cause disaster when you're on a plane. I've also been saying for years that it's the airline industry that has brainwashed people into thinking that flying is safer than diving. I will never set foot on a plane again.
As long as the FAA uses on-time to rate airlines these things happen. The media is complicent.
"Limited time for training"
They bought their tickets. They knew what they were getting into. I say...
Reason:Pilot Error (Should not take off until Little Rock Airport Gone From Bad weather) Sure Passengers Want to Home
i don't want to be a victim of "get-thereitis"!!!!!!!
Pilots make dangerous landing because passengers complain about delays and landing at a different airport. When Karen's stop being Karen's pilots will make safer decisions.
An acquaintance of my cousins friends brother in law held an umbrella for one of the survivor sisters who wasn't really related but a half sister.
Is it is easy to blame pilots it is unbelievable that you have information that thunderstorm is there who gave the permission to foy the plane why not have cancelled it it is madness
