Because of what they did there were tons of initial survivors in a situation where you'd expect no survivors. If the rescue crew went immediately to save people this would have been still a tradegy, but a bit less

These pilots were two of the most amazing pilots in the world to this day. Even though to flight didn't make it, the never gave up and used every scrap of knowledge and skill they could muster to keep it aloft as best they could under conditions no pilots ever faced before. Much repect for what they did, much honor for never giving up.
This was a very well researched report of what happened during that terrible hour. It’s dreadful that some people survived the crash but died during the night before rescuers got to them.

And even if the NTSB had been involved directly, they have no legal jurisdiction on japanese soil and would have required to be granted permission first. The american military needed to be given permission too, which is why they couldn't get involved without it.
I have seen many episodes of Mayday and frankly this is one of the most saddening and terrible stories. Full credits to the crew for performing their duty till the very end.
So many mistakes and too many lives lost. Starting with maintenance of the plane,but also the people in the helicopter just assuming that there were no survivors. And then the next rescue team camping overnight so close to the accident,while people were dying! Just heartbreaking!!!

Meanwhile, Boeing paid more than JAL and reached an amicable settlement with the families involved. They also supposedly replaced the 747. Boeing wasn't cutting corners; their technicians made a mistake and it was clear in the report. The splice works, if the repair was actually completed correctly. One faulty repair should never down an aircraft with the level of redundancy in the industry, unless your maintenance procedures and inspections aren't thorough. Especially when the faulty repair lasted 7 years, waiting to be inspected. But mistakes like those can happen. The botched rescue? Inexcusable. There is no possible reason for Tokyo MP to wave off American support here. Absolutely no excuse.

An average roller coaster ride is around 3 minutes, and it feels like forever. I can't imagine 30 minutes of that. I would rather lose consciousness with hypoxia.

@@daviddavis3389 If they ditch the plane in the ocean the chances of the landing going wrong is about 90% due to the waves and swells. That is why the landing in the Hudson River with nobody dying was a miracle. In their case they didn’t have enough control to get to the ocean.

Every time I walk up to that 20,000 ton tin can, I freak out just a little. The mere fact that such a craft makes it off the ground and maintains height carrying hundreds, is incredible, and freaky. The fact that if something happens up there, you are pretty much powerless, is an awful thought.

It's incredibly saddening that issues like heirarchy and jurastiction caused more casualties in this accident. As far as I know, it is still not known or publisiced who ordered the site investigation to be cancelled. This person sure has some hand in the casualty numbers as well. And on a seperate note, I appreciate the show's effort to acutally hire Japanese people to fill the roles in this episode. So many other shows just hire generic people who fit the general look and it is obvious they are not from the country they are trying to portray. Props for the added realism.

This was the BEST episode ever of this program. This one really got to me. I cried when I saw the elderly couple hold hands because they knew they were going down. I can only imagine what the real passengers must have been thinking. I also cried when I saw that the off duty flight attendant had survived. This was better than any movie. Look up the long (45 minute) episode of the one where the tail breaks off...more to than than you'd think. Very scary. Great episode. A top one. Next to the Skynyrd crash. In that KNOWING you will crash from lack of fuel for 10 minutes has to be up there. No fire, b/c no fuel. Plus the DC-10 cargo door. And Hawaii where the fuselage broke in 80s (?) Ripped whole roof off! It doesn't end like you'd expect.
Yeah cause clearly the American airbase personnel didn't care that it wasn't American lives - they were willing to go and help right away. Found the site and were prepared to go rappel down and search for survivors but were told to return to base. -Disgusting. Sad that they were found quickly and still died due to total incompetence of the rescue crews. Why the f*** would you stop overnight even if you didn't expect survivors - there is always a chance.
The Japanese government and the Japanese Self-Defense Forces had to be held accountable for the death toll. *They did not cause the accident, but the decision to prevent the first rescue attempt by the US military was beyond criminal.*

I don't understand cutting corners when it comes to repairs and maintenance of any and all aircrafts, every aircraft should be treated as if it was Air Force One
I recall reading a report about this repair and it was actually a miscalculation on the part of the technicians , and nothing to do with cutting corners.Something about they actually used the correct number of rivets but the overlap of the repair was incorrect and they only penetrated one part of the patch rather than the whole ,which had the same result as only using one row of rivets.
Every aircraft should be maintained as if your entire family and friends were on it for every flight. You would see maintenance cuts and errors minimized.

The fact that they did not allow the US and Boeing officials at the crash site is just a matter of pride. The lives that could have been saved had their pride not gotten in the way. My heart breaks for these families and loved ones. How sad that the Marines could have repelled down and saved more people, and were told to return to base. All because they had a political motivation.

I still don't think any repair that lasts 7 years is bad. I think that's a great run, under those conditions. But I think you have to X ray it regular to make sure it stays that way. I would. We didn't have portable x rates, but they DID have flouroscopes. Assuming you had protective gear, b/c that's no BS, radiation damage. See Edison's assistant. So bad, he never allowed one X ray on himself. Tho they're not the same. They used them, too, as shoe fitting machines, if you believe that. Salesmen just rolling highly radioactive machines all over a store to dose some poor kid's feet. But it should work.
That's the Asians I've seen and known in a nutshell. But these girls have really done as much as the pilots in these. One girl CRAWLED around the Hawaii plane checking her passengers with the ROOF OFF the plane. THAT is a BAD-A. imo.

Nope the crash in Tenerife killed 583, the Japan Airlines crash killed 520. Americans offered to save as many passengers as possible but the Japanese people in charge denied their help. Because of this many died from exposure and injuries that didn't need to die. It's absolutely disgusting that these stopped Americans from saving so many lives, just disgraceful.

The JAL crash was due to a botched repair, whereas, in Tenerife, the KLM pilot initiated his takeoff roll without clearance - deliberate action of jumping into the unknown without a safety net - which is basically Russian roulette. Hats off to the copilot for speaking up, if only once, the first time the captain's itchy trigger finger got the better of him, and what a bummer for the Boeing employee who physically installed that single row of rivets on the seam.

The efforts after the crash are shocking. If those US Marines had been allowed to land so shortly after the plane went down, far more would have survived.

I watched many,, Mayday" Episodes but this one really hit me hard emotionally... I never cried so much and needed to stop a few times. Its devastating that the rescue team didnt search for survivors, it just made me mad how many mistakes were made. Horrible tragedy
At some point, yes. And I think we are at that point. Time for people to be held accountable. Boeing employees say that those training employees how to build planes are an outside firm of people who have never built a plane. A lot more Boeing planes are going to come down in the coming decade.
Everytime I fly I always ask God to let me see my kids for one last time. I used to love flying and have flown on long haul. But every time I get on a flight I am full of fear. God bless all the people who died. The terror they must have felt it's awful to think about.

It would have to be integrated into the body I would think, since every part has to work together to make the thing fly. And there’s no telling how much that would cost. So we know they won’t spend for that.

I immediately googled it and it spoiled it for me, because apparently, the only notable thing that Wikipedia has to say about this mountain is that "The plane crash of Japan Airlines Flight 123 was initially reported on Mount Osutaka, but later confirmed to be on a ridge near Mount Takamagahara. It was the deadliest single-plane accident in world history."

This is one of those few accidents that is like "OK, you're all dead... there's basically nothing you can do." The real tragedy is that nobody bothered to come rescue and it was all a giant cover-up.
I met a guy who survived the Delta crash in Dallas in 1985. He told me a million things go through your head at the same time, esp if you know you're gonna crash and the crew cannot do a thing to stop it. Oh, and he got rich off of it.
If i survived and saw all those bodies at night i would probably have been traumatized for life and earned alot of mental illnesses that is complete horror that i wouldn’t wish uppon my worst enemies
Pilots did not put on oxygen right away. Captain zoned out. Too much atc talk, the japan rescue services fought w each other while live survivors died. Trying to get people to medical help the tv cameras and staff interference made it harder. This is disgusting at best. My prayers for people waiting 14 hours not getting help.

Oh my oh Lord. This is the worst plane crash story ever - that there are passengers alive. Waiting to be rescued after 30 terrifying minutes up and down. And the music is so dramatic. Afraid to take my blood pressure. This is an amazingly filmed story. Wow!
An average roller coaster ride is around 3 minutes, and it feels like forever. I can't imagine 30 minutes of that. I would rather lose consciousness with hypoxia.

I couldn’t imagine all your fears becoming true as you sit helpless in a plane as it’s falling from the sky knowing the odds of surviving are almost non existent. That poor flight crew had no idea, they fought to save their plane right up until the end but it just was never going to be enough. May they all rest in peace. The Passengers joined and flight crew and flight attendants joined their ancestors that day.

The actors in this documentary did a great job, their portrayal of the passengers was very convincing. Also, the investigative reporting was superb.
Every time I walk up to that 20,000 ton tin can, I freak out just a little. The mere fact that such a craft makes it off the ground and maintains height carrying hundreds, is incredible, and freaky. The fact that if something happens up there, you are pretty much powerless, is an awful thought.
isn’t it amazing!! I work for an airline and the science of flying has been explained to me many times… but I honestly can’t tell you how amazed I still am watching them take off and land.

I give great thanks to the woman who tried her best to take care of all the passengers right to the end, she did not think of herself...but others. I prey for the dead and the survivors. This was so tragic it's hard to fathom. I give thumb's up for the pilots, they fought an un winnable fight to the very end, may they all rest in peace
It's incredibly saddening that issues like heirarchy and jurastiction caused more casualties in this accident.
As far as I know, it is still not known or publisiced who ordered the site investigation to be cancelled.
This person sure has some hand in the casualty numbers as well.
And on a seperate note, I appreciate the show's effort to acutally hire Japanese people to fill the roles in this episode.
So many other shows just hire generic people who fit the general look and it is obvious they are not from the country they are trying to portray.

This was the BEST episode ever of this program. This one really got to me. I cried when I saw the elderly couple hold hands because they knew they were going down. I can only imagine what the real passengers must have been thinking. I also cried when I saw that the off duty flight attendant had survived. This was better than any movie. May all those passengers rest in peace.

Yeah cause clearly the American airbase personnel didn't care that it wasn't American lives - they were willing to go and help right away. Found the site and were prepared to go rappel down and search for survivors but were told to return to base. -Disgusting. Sad that they were found quickly and still died due to total incompetence of the rescue crews. Why the f*** would you stop overnight even if you didn't expect survivors - there is always a chance.
The Japanese government and the Japanese Self-Defense Forces had to be held accountable for the death toll.
*They did not cause the accident, but the decision to prevent the first rescue attempt by the US military was beyond criminal.*

I recall reading a report about this repair and it was actually a miscalculation on the part of the technicians , and nothing to do with cutting corners.Something about they actually used the correct number of rivets but the overlap of the repair was incorrect and they only penetrated one part of the patch rather than the whole ,which had the same result as only using one row of rivets.
Every aircraft should be maintained as if your entire family and friends were on it for every flight. You would see maintenance cuts and errors minimized.

The fact that they did not allow the US and Boeing officials at the crash site is just a matter of pride. The lives that could have been saved had their pride not gotten in the way. My heart breaks for these families and loved ones. How sad that the Marines could have repelled down and saved more people, and were told to return to base. I still don't think any repair that lasts 7 years is bad. I think that's a great run, under those conditions.
But I think you have to X ray it regular to make sure it stays that way. I would. We didn't have portable x rates, but they DID have flouroscopes. Assuming you had protective gear, b/c that's no BS, radiation damage. See Edison's assistant. So bad, he never allowed one X ray on himself. Tho they're not the same.
They used them, too, as shoe fitting machines, if you believe that. Salesmen just rolling highly radioactive machines all over a store to dose some poor kid's feet.

This really was a total tragedy, one that never should have happened, one that the innocent and brave pilots had zero hope of stopping. 😥

Nope the crash in Tenerife killed 583, the Japan Airlines crash killed 520. Americans offered to save as many passengers as possible but the Japanese people in charge denied their help. Because of this many died from exposure and injuries that didn't need to die. It's absolutely disgusting that these stopped Americans from saving so many lives, just disgraceful.

The JAL crash was due to a botched repair, whereas, in Tenerife, the KLM pilot initiated his takeoff roll without clearance - deliberate action of jumping into the unknown without a safety net - which is basically Russian roulette. Hats off to the copilot for speaking up, if only once, the first time the captain's itchy trigger finger got the better of him, and what a bummer for the Boeing employee who physically installed that single row of rivets on the seam.
The Americans should have ignored the Japanese and gone to help.

The efforts after the crash are shocking. If those US Marines had been allowed to land so shortly after the plane went down, far more would have survived.

I watched many,, Mayday" Episodes but this one really hit me hard emotionally... I never cried so much and needed to stop a few times. Its devastating that the rescue team didnt search for survivors, it just made me mad how many mistakes were made. Horrible tragedy

Everytime I fly I always ask God to let me see my kids for one last time. I used to love flying and have flown on long haul. But every time I get on a flight I am full of fear. God bless all the people who died. The terror they must have felt it's awful to think about.

I have been asking this question, why dont aircraft have camers outside to see above and beneath so as for pilots to see whats going on around their planes.
Probably the high air pressure will destroy the camera.
I'm only guessing, but I can imagine that any extra parts on the outside of an airplane could possibly become a safety hazard itself.
It would have to be integrated into the body I would think, since every part has to work together to make the thing fly. And there’s no telling how much that would cost. So we know they won’t spend for that.

My dad always told me to get a seat in the rear of the plane. He said the tail is usually the last part of the plane to go down.
This is one of those few accidents that is like "OK, you're all dead... there's basically nothing you can do."
The real tragedy is that nobody bothered to come rescue and it was all a giant cover-up.
In my humble opinion; the repair was very well done. The aircraft was getting old. Something somewhat similar happened to aloha 243 .
I met a guy who survived the Delta crash in Dallas in 1985. He told me a million things go through your head at the same time, esp if you know you're gonna crash and the crew cannot do a thing to stop it. Oh, and he got rich off of it.

Pilots did not put on oxygen right away. Captain zoned out. Too much atc talk, the japan rescue services fought w each other while live survivors died. Trying to get people to medical help the tv cameras and staff interference made it harder.
This is disgusting at best. My prayers for people waiting 14 hours not getting help.
