A David Lynch Masterpiece ... Wherever you are, dear David, thank you for your legacy ...
After training the Fremen, Paul took a little trip to the Pacific Northwest to get a cup of Coffee and the best slice of Cherry Pie that he ever had.
😆😆😆😆😆
@Bill McKay I think you mean God or the Right Hand of Vengeance.

"My name is a killing word." I always get chills at this moment in this scene. Excellent film!
Indeed.
Liked it really back than.
I wanted to write a song called that but it's been done.

Pretty dangerous, actually. That Fremen soldier should have had the safety lock on on his device.

Some crazy little side notes. Chani is Kynes daughter. As shown in a deleted scene. The legend of the kwisatz haderach is planted into poor and desperate populations generations ago by the Bene Geserits to give them hope. Paul is not meant to be a hero, or a messiah. Whatever he is they transplant him into the position of Kwisatz Haderach. He doesn’t want the inevitable Jihad, but knows he is powerless to stop it. He only wants to avenge his father. The book is so deep, everyone should read it.
Books are better than the movies and more moving.
read the books yourself. he knows hes not "powerless to stop it", hes too much of a coward to do so.
@@FingerinUrDaughter if I remember correctly he would have at the very beginning had to kill himself, his mother and everyone else in the room at the time to stop it.
Finishing the first book and it is amazing. I am even more impressed with Villeneuve job. That is a hard master piece to adapt
I always felt that the main goal of the Bene Gesserit was not to give people hope but to manipulate populations into submission and control. What happened in Arrakis was their plan getting disarrayed and gaining life of its own out of their control.
“Through sound and motion, you will be able to paralyze nerves, shatter bones, set fires, suffocate your enemy or burst his organs.”
He just described my mother-in-law.

Much as I love the new Dune, there's something special about this adaptation from David Lynch. It's a movie I come back to every few years just to be swept up in its world all over again.
I prefer Lynch's depiction of house Harkonen and Petir.
Because thats what they do...destroy good flicks even though the paying moviegoers prove otherwise.
The recent DUNE movies are basically Dune, as is presented by the book.
This is Dune, through the eyes of David Lynch
Both versions are fun to watch
@@UndeadBug This movie pulls no punches in the direction it wants to go, and some of the sets and costumes are utterly magnificent. While I can't ever say this is faithful to the books, it picks up Dune and runs with it in a direction that's interesting and then plasters that all over the screen for us to enjoy.
The new one pales in comparison to the achievement by Lynch, because NOW, it is easy to do any of this stuff, and in fact, everything in the new one look like toys in the sand shot poorly with digital cameras they look fake but easily shot, quickly done, poor designs.
this movie might be super weird, but I just love the visuals

Never understood the negativity this movie got. Loved it when it first came out, love it still today.
It's mostly because it omits the shadow of the consequences Paul's visions would have. He was a puppet of destiny and destroyer of worlds, not a hero.
@@amanofnoreputation2164 well I agree it in no way does the books justice but as a stand-alone 2 hour body of work (without the comparison of the source material) I think it gets harshly judged and to me sits alongside my other sci fi favourite Bladerunner as a great piece of 80’s cinema.
I also really like Villeneuves remake. Will be interesting to see how his part 2 addresses Paul’s destiny.
It’s because it was shit. The inner monologue crap is enough in itself to make you cringe. Add piss poor acting and you’ve got a turd of a movie with admittedly great music and some decent ideas.
Is that so? Doesn’t change my opinion one iota but thanks for the input.
@@sultanoftippoo3857 I didn’t expect it would. And thank you 🙏🏻
As far as I am concerned, this is one of the greatest films ever made. There may be subtle imperfections but the effects, style, and mystery truly captured the world of Dune.
Truly underrated because it came out at a time when people were expecting Star Wars
The look of the movie was good, but destroyed the novel's story.
@@Emanresuadeen It hardly "destroyed" it. In fact, if you can find the long version with the deleted scenes added back in, it's pretty damn close to most of the book. Changing the weirding way from a Bene Gesserit martial art to sonic emitters is probably the biggest overall plot departure.
@@0megacron In some ways, yes. It is closer to the book than the mini-series, especially how the Harkonnens are portrayed. The movie is strongest in it's great visuals. But it did destroy _major_ portions of the book's story completely.
First, in the nonsense about the "Weirding Modules" , which become a major plot device in the movie which are not in the book at all, and completely eviscerates so much of the actual story.
Maybe more importantly, is how it pulled this nonsense about Paul magically making it rain, pardon the pun, out of thin air. That, of course, is not in the novel, and completely changed the climatic scene of the entire novel. It drained the entire tension from the scene, where Paul should instead, be threatening to instantly order the complete destruction, forever, of all spice production by poisoning the worms.
No, these were major changes, unnecessary in my opinion, along with others, made to dumb the story down into a matinee length movie they thought the public would be able to sit through.
And that's my point, it "blew apart" the rock solid, epic story into a little pile of rubble and dust it figured the average person could deal with. 3:10
@@Emanresuadeen Frank Herbert said the movie improved some elements of the book, the Weirding Modules were one of those elements if i remember right.
Ok... That was a badass recommended video.
TRIVIA: The Weirding Modules wasn't in the novel. In the novel, Paul teaches the Fremen the Weirding Way, a Bene Gesserit martial arts. However. David Lynch didn't want to do Kung Fu on sand dunes and instead, he devised the concept of the Weirding Module sound guns.
Should have done the Kung fu, it would have been less weird
@@jaymassey2749Kung Fu against a gun .
Which one would win ?
@@alokinzna not sure if you're familiar with Dune, but guns aren't really a centerpiece.
@@jaymassey2749 I'm not really familiar with Dune. I've read only the first book , watched the movies and am only passingly familiar with the tv series .
And I've watched summaries of the rest of the books .
Maybe future kung-fu makes sense if they have personal shields like the movies show but exactly how much damage can it absorb and how long can it last until it needs recharging ?
Even then it doesn't seem like this is cheap and accessible technology that a regular soldier would get .
So guns make more sense than space kung-fu .
"The slow blade defeats the shield."
Personal shields slow down or even stop melee weapon attacks or supersonic projectiles. Shield generators can absorb the blast of an Atomic weapon (but it's the radiation that kills you). Schools of fencing and martial arts have sprung up around thwarting shields in close combat.
Energy weapons like a laser cause a feedback that will cause the field to explode and will cause the laser power pack to detonate.
Lasguns have the coat of arms of the noble or badge of the House that owns them carved into them. Stealing or absconding with one is a capital crime.
Oh, my gosh. I love this movie. Thanks for the memories.
MY NAME IS A KILLING WORD. God I loved this movie. Made me a David Lynch fan 100%
God I love this movie. Love the new one too...great time to be a Dune fan.
And so began 10,000 years of war and bloodshed. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and the blood of your enemies.
A high tech galaxy filled with hundreds of billions of souls and a thriving space faring civilization utterly destroyed and tossed back into barbarity. Only a fraction of humanity survived the jihad and the ones left lived lives little better than wandering hunter gatherers. Definitely a cure that was worse than the illness.
While the idea of the modules by itself is interesting, it's also one of the greatest departures from what made the Dune books great. In essence where the film falls short is the whole interaction between Paul/Jessica/the Atreides and the Fremen. The film never touches on why the Fremen are so strong and what made Duke Leto willingly step into the Emperors trap.
For one Leto didn't have a choice but to accept control of Arrakis. He knew it was a trap but he tried to prepare for it and unlike the Harkonnen he treated the natives, the Fremen, with respect. He couldn't know about the true combat capability of the Fremen but i guess he suspected it which is why he sent out Idaho in advance to establish contact and gain their trust.
If he had more time to fully connect with the Fremen and become their ally he would have kicked everyone's ass just like Paul did years later.
@@FPAlpha in the book, Duke Leto could have taken his house rogue. Meaning instead of taking Arrakis and knowingly walking into a trap, he could have chosen a form of exile.
Lynch was out of his league with this story.
@@DaveMiller2 He did the best with what he could, there is really no way to incorporate all the subtelties of decades of Landsraad galactic politics that led to the events of Dune.
The blood feud between the Atreides and Harkonnen is centuries old at this point, not really a mystery why the Baron was in on this. However, the motivations of the Emperor are far less clear - while he clearly considered Duke Leto a threat to his power, it is not made clear why until Thufir Hawat explains this to the Baron himself.

I wonder if that was a sign of the times, the movie was shot during the Soviet Afganistan War after all, Lynch and the producers probably thought it could work as an allegory for the Taliban versus the Soviets, who you might remember also got a pretty one sided depiction in Rambo 3.

People and specially the F.Herbert fangirls like to shit on this movie, but considering the troubled production history and the limited technology,David Lynch had available, it´s a pretty cool film overall.
I mean Sir Patrick Stewart, holding a pug and charging on the Harkonnen soldiers, screaming like a madman alone, makes it worth watching.
hypernerds and ultrageeks always shit on movies because they demand that every element of the production must be a perfect, factual documentary that always adheres 100% to canon with zero deviation even if the story is purely fictional fantasy to begin with. this is why most normal people agree that the 3 star wars movies made after return of the jedi sucked, but the hypernerds and ultrageeks loved them. movies are not historical documents, they are supposed to be entertaining and fun to watch.
It’s a neat movie, but as an adaptation it’s abysmal at best. Adaptations don’t need to be perfect, but it’d be nice if they didn’t contradict rules established in the source material
All these years later and I'm still waiting for an explanation of what the fuck was going on with that pug
@@Beau74 ... I have not read Dune since 1982-83, so my memory is hazy, which means I don't remember if there were any pet dogs in the book. From what others in the past had said, the pug was probably put in the movie by Lynch. Here's what Google had to say... "Pugs were bred to be the companions of royalty. They originated in the Far East and can be traced back to the first century B.C. They were considered a royal dog in China, owned by aristocrats and bestowed as precious gifts - rather than sold - to rulers in foreign countries." So in a way, the pugs that the Atreides owned subliminally showed that they were basically royalty & a kingdom, just to visually tell to audiences that we are dealing with conflicts between traditional kingdoms as it were in past real history, such as in Europe, Asia & Africa. But here we deal with kingdoms that own planets. It would be amazing if the pug breed had survived for another 8 thousand years in real life to get to the point of time, fictionally, of the Dune story. A lot of that would have to do with people making sure the different breeds of animals today try to stay the same for about the next 10 millennia, since it would naturally be easy for breeds to start dying off or mix/merge quickly into something new, although we sort of call them mutts today.
@@457falcon ... The Spice Diver alternative cut makes it a little closer to the book, also increasing the length of the movie to 3 hours, not 2.25 as the original 1984 theatrical cut.

Total departure from the source material, BUT, one of the coolest, best thought out adaptations in sci fi filmmaking! Lynch did a great job of adapting this movie from the books (And we all know if he had been left alone without interference it would have been even better) The weirding module, with a different name and introduced in some other sci fi movie would have been hailed as one of the greatest sci fi weapons ever, possible even better than the lightsaber or raygun. Only the fact that it was shoehorned into a property that never needed it in the first place negated it's cool factor. Lynch's Dune while lacking in many points that made the source material so beloved, is still a great movie if you choose to forgive the film industry for unnecessary meddling for no good reason.

you may want to look up what the guy who played Piter had to say about Lynch. Give you a hint studio interference was warranted otherwise Lynch would have had an actor mutilated.

One of my favorite scenes from the film. Can't wait for the new version, hope they do it justice!!!
it wont be in it, the sonic weapons were a invention of this adaption of dune.
in the original books, the "weirding way" was a method of fighting, and built upon total conscious control of every single muscle in the body. skilling practicioners basically get to the "think, and it is so" stage where they move so fast, to outsiders they seem to almost teleport. they desire to be behind someone, and in the literal blink of an eye they are.
the makers of this version of dune didnt think this would work very well on flim (given the limits of 80s technology and special effects), so they went with this instead as a more visual friendly advantage.
The sonic weapon theme is completely fictional, it wasn't in the book.

@jean Cárdenas I'd love to read a description of how "Weirding Way from the books" could be shown in the movie without looking silly, and especially with 1980-ies technology.
@@rredhawk There was no weapon in the books. The weirding way was an extension of the Bene Gesserit training Paul received from his mother. The BG "prana bindu" techniques could only really be fully performed by women, or exceptional individuals like Paul or Count Fenring. Prana Bindu gave the BG sisters almost total control of their physiology, including incredible speed and flexibility. Those kids have one hell of a ID forger, even the Kwisatz Haderach looks to have bought that they were warriors.
In an important scene from the book that was skipped over in this movie version, Paul kills a Freman warrior named Jamis in a formal one on one combat.
Paul’s victory proves his worth to the Fremen, and he is initiated into their tribe. But by their custom, he becomes responsible for Jamis’ widow and her two young sons.
I suppose that these two boys are the two sons of Jamis that Paul adopted as his own.
I love how the boys are in key scenes. They were Paul's since he killed their father and they are portrayed as such in key scenes.

I enjoyed david Lynch's take he said he was happy with this movie. I think the only mistake he made was that it wasnt Multiple movies. But i think at the time it was hard to sell something like this as a mulplie movie deal. Say what you will about LoTR and peter jackson. He changed the dynamics of hollywood by making it 3 movies. I dont know what he said but it worked on the EXEx in hollywood. He showed that people would be willing to see a multi movie story.. He just didnt have enough movie to fit in such a intricate story. Other than that which is somethign he coulnt control. the movie was good
One of the things that I realized only later, with the added scenes that were removed from the theather cut: The 2 kids were the sons of Jamis. I was wondering why kids would be trained as the 100 warriors that would train thousands more. Were they really that badass? Were they supposed to train child warrior battallions? The movie doesn´t explain it.
I don't care what anyone says ...The 1984 version is a Classic. I understand why David Lynch changed it up a bit....All of that Knife combat wouldn't have worked well in the 1984 version. I'm still impressed with the design of the Stillsuits in this version.....That same design could have worked in The New Dune movies.
I live this movie so much. Keep your Star Wars.
What a masterpiece movie...
For those of us who could never plow through the insufferable, gratuitous prose of Frank Herbert, David Lynch deserves a place of honor for his version of Dune....................
I've seen this movie dubbed in Italian and Paul sounded to me like he yelled "Ciao" (Hello or Bye) for breaking the rock. 😁 Amazing movie, different from the remake for the special effects or the use of thoughts like a comic or the novels themselves. A thing seen only in Sin City. I appreciated the remake especially for soundtrack, the technical aspects and actors like Brolin, Bardem and Momoa. But differently from Villenueve, Lynch has got his original ways to play with images, sounds and scenes, like during Paul's dreams. Then, Kyle McLachlan's acting overcomes the new Paul.
the series was written as a warning
just like "1984"
When I got my black belt in Judo, I totally felt like Paul Atreides breaking the obelisk. . . "some thoughts ... have a certain sound"
