Wonderful to see an artists impression of my old city. I've always wondered what Durban must have looked like back in those very early days. Thanks for this video. Now onto the next one.
Hi. Hope you don't mind me asking. Are you from South Africa? Since I see from your content that you have particular love for South Africa with a lot of your videos focusing on South African cities. Great content. Just subscribed. 👌👌👍👍
I remember watching the drive in from our front stoep in Umgeni road . Watch the helicopters landing at the army base where Sun Coast is presently. Walking the beach with family , down Argyle road . Going to West St , during Christmas to see the lights . Listening to the Roar of New Kingsmead when Durban United and City played on Sunday , free lunch at the Weddings at the Temple . Sunday night watching the movies at ST Joserphs hall at the corner of Argyle ans Stamford hill rds . Indians , Whites , coloureds and blacks lived together in harmony . That was Durban i grew up in . Never to see again . Beautiful Beautiful Durban 😢
I am an old Durban boy. Remember the City vs United derby games. My great school friend's dad, Aussie Crawford was City's trainer. I so wanted to play for them. Sadly only Under 9 & 11 five- a-side in their jersey. Won them both though.
This is the charming and delightful city I grew up in. I would love to visit all the heritage sites and old Victorian suburbs to admire the architecture, which was perfectly preserved. Of course the beach is where we spent most of our glory days. Sadly, Durban has turned into a real shithole....literally. There is raw sewage flowing into the sea. It's too dangerous to walk on the streets and its now just one giant slum. 300 years of history, culture, planning and pride all wiped out in just 30 years.
I had also heard this somewhere. But the earliest hand drawn maps I have of the very early settlement dont show this and I suspect it would have been a huge engineering project to divert it. If there is any info out there on this I'd be keen to see it.
I think it split with part of the river going out to sea and the balance feeding the marshland that was between the River and Greyville Race course, the Race Course was built in 1844 so they built a canal to drain the land into the harbour
Great work! Check for Nils servitude, engineered to drain the marshland water, starts near the ICC building area of the CBD, direct into the Harbour. Currently a thick slab of concrete covers it on some parts. Hope thus helps
It was named after Sir Benjamin D' urban who was the Administrator of the Cape Colony. The people who ran "Port Natal", as it was originally named, renamed it after him. There are some very, very well researched and written books on South African history. Do yourself a favour and try and read them. Very fascinating to read.
Agree. As a content creator I am sure @jetjunky6760 learns from every video and improves. I do suggest going back and editing the soundtrack to lower the music volume and increase the VO clarity. Stumbled onto these videos and they are a delight!
I live in Durban and the fact that you made the model from city skylines is amazing!
So glad you enjoyed it 😊

That's a matter of opinion. Not fact. I grew up in Durban. It is not the city it once was unfortunately.

Who saved Natal? Book by Colin Bender about the struggles with the port entrance in the early days.
I think the uMngeni River used to flow into the bay originally.

My Dad is writing a book about the history of the Dbn harbour and would like to contact you. Can you send me your email address please? Tks Kary
Thank you so much, I will check this out!
The background music is so loud it's competing with the narrator. 🙆♂️
Who named Durban?????

The music was too loud. I couldn’t finish watching what looked like a good documentary 😭
Thank you, I have definitely made an adjustment for the future videos.
You should see Durban today , its an absolute SH. Another South Africa city gone to the dogs. Even Cape Town is crumbling.
Background music is your main volume and your voice is background 🙆♂

How many different stories you could tell which are known by different (languages) and (cultures) and actual history. Not modern history.
A city that was one of the most beautiful to one run down to junk
It smells of human sewrage and the streets are full of litter. Thankfully i left this
