My channel has actually been doing pretty well all things considered. It's only about 2 weeks old and I'm proud of where I've come. I wish the utmost of success for everyone gathered here. You're already on the right path! Researching methods is more effort than most people put into UA-cam.
Ive been on YT since 2016, and I have 875 subs and barely 2,000 watch hours the last year. Ive decided not to give a f*** about analytics anymore, and make content just for the heck of it. The less I worry about metrics, the better I am mentally. AND, the channel grows when I focus more on *QUALITY* rather than *QUANTITY* . Most of us just wont make it on YT. That's what most small creators dont realise.
The beauty of having a channel that little to no people are watching is that you can experiment A LOT. It is the stage where your skills are honed as a creator...I think most people forget that part of the UA-cam journey, your first videos aren't going to be your best so you need time to work on creating the best quality content that you can muster. In addition you want to have a catalogue of work that people can go through when you eventually go viral....going viral with only one or two videos in your channel is pretty useless because new subscribers will have nothing to binge watch. It's a long and treacherous journey but the only way you will get to the destination is by having a good time along the way.
You are so correct. As much as I would like to grow my number of subscribers, this is also the time to develop myself as a content creator with my audience. Big audience can be challenging especially when you weren’t ready for it.
So much effort and optimization for hardly anything in return. The conceptualization, hours of writing, voice overs, music production, searching for sound effects and imagery all for or maybe 100 views on good original horror stories. And thats just this channel
Tell me about it. I miss the old UA-cam. I wish I could get 100 views. Most of the people who sub don't even watch it's freaking annoying the hell you sub for anyway. I wish UA-cam could develop something that could delete inactive subs.
Checked out your channel and it seems you exert so much energy on creating the content but very little when it comes to titles and thumbnails. That's where the magic is...there are too many people in your niche already, your packaging is what will help you stand out, I'm not saying you will become an overnight success but great thumbnails and titles will definitely push you up to at least a thousand views. Work on a different thumbnail and titles strategy....good luck!

1119 subs….10,000+ watch hours…55 videos…ATR 5%…AWT 4.55 mins (average video 9 min)…channel is 1 year old. About five months ago, I did a pivot on our channel from doing travel videos exclusively about our home state to doing videos from across the United States. I’m also beginning to put in some videos on world travel. Since that time, I have noticed a precipitous drop in our viewership. It’s frustrating. But I know this pivot is going to be good for us in the long run.
I just tried doing simpler videos, the *boof* - it worked, last video shot up to 2.6k views in 4 days, 110 new subs so far and almost 200 watch time hours, just from a simple video that took 2 hours to make - sometimes the answer is not to spend more time on the video production, but spend more time on the value provided in the video, and the people will come :)
The problem I have, is I had to take a break due to mental health and my channel has suffered as doesn't seem to be getting the views that previous videos. But then 2024 hasn't been a great year for me putting videos out because of real life.
Life happens. Don't let it get you down! It's part of your youtube growth journey. Sometimes we have to figure out how to move forward despite all of the challenges and that might mean slowing down or taking a break. Both are totally ok!

I’ve been wanting to get my watch time up. I think I need to post more consistently for one thing. Unfortunately, for my latest video, I got a 0.5 CTR and an average watch time of 3:27 on a 15 minute video. Hopefully things improve for my channel soon.
Still trying to get to 1k subs and the watch hours but enjoying every moment of it! Gotta focus on enjoying the journey rather than just focusing on getting monetized 😊Keep going guys!
Ignoring my numbers works better. using my time for my family and other stuff makes more sense. Content is still provided. Why look at numbers and stress over being a low number.
Because most people treat YT as if it was life or death. Thats a ridiculous approach to it. This platforms keeps benefiting people like MrBeast (who found himself in a lot of trouble lately), and small creators cannot catch a break. Thats just how things works in this platform, and IN LIFE.
Im the same way, like yea having more views makes you feel better, but at the end of the day Im not stopping the process of uploading. It creates a timeline of your life to look back on

We've been starting to see a higher level of growth lately for our channel, but know we have a long way to go with currently being at 390 subs, and 1,400 watch hours. Started to work this channel on a regular basis in February 2024, and had the goal to monetize by the end of the year. Doesn't look like that will happen, but who knows with this growing momentum lately. Enjoyed this video, and really like your presentation style.

After vidsummit we went to uploading every 3 weeks. This way we have the time to do all the things you mentioned before every video. I feel like we are "getting it" faster uploading every 3 weeks instead of every week.
Right now my average duration is only 2 minutes and a 2.6% click through rate and it is ridiculously hard to explain things in a simple manner, and talk smoothly without needing to retry literally 50 times before posting.
I started a kids' music channel about three months ago. It has 758,000-lifetime views, and over 2,000 subscribers. But the only problem is I only have 1950 watch time hours.

After SIX YEARS we are finally monetized. I went on my desktop and turned my default settings to have every new video be set as "enable monetized," but every time I try to go live on my phone it defaults to not monetized-- so any views on the livestream are lost to monetization. I don't understand why it doesn't save my settings... they are set in the studio, but don't translate to vertical livestreams... maybe you know?
Very helpful! Just under 2k subs here and monetized. My watch hours are good just trying to increase my views and CTR. Doing some thumbnail comparisons now. Some of the most bizarre topics get the most virus on my channel. Hard to figure out. Good luck everyone!
I am in my 10th week on one of my new UA-cam channels, I have 291 subscribers. One of my goals for both my channels is to reach 1000 subscribers! I have many goals! My main goal is to help others! My channel live click through rate has been recently 20% to 30%. It used to be like 5% to 8%. The average audience retention time has been close to 43& its recently sky rocketed! I think UA-cam has ghosted my ip address, my channel, my camera, the phone number I used to verify the gmail account, my laptop. I think I need to start all over with new equipment, new phone number, new channel and a new internet connection.
Awesome video. I do not know what to do with my channel anymore. My shorts does not show up in feed my videos are only showing to my subscribers. I have tried many things settings etc titles too nothing helps. I was getting views when i first started then one day it all stopped and never the same.

I just can’t seem to get the watch hours, or improve my click through rate or retention beyond 30 seconds. If I repeat a topic or format that does well, I end up with diminishing returns. Views are dwindling. I’ve shifted my topic choice and length to try to improve. But nothing seems to work and I’m feeling incredibly frustrated by it :(
I have a music channel. Checked the numbers BUT! The number of impressions is the key - how many times my video was shown to the viewers. Only twice did the UA-cam show my video to 10,000 people and those videos did well. The rest is around 100, sometimes even 6 or 0. My conclusion is that YT throws your video once in a while to more people just so you don't lose hope. For the rest, they wait till you pay for showing your content to more people. No such thing as a free lunch. It's especially pointless to analyse those videos that were shown more as that is completely random I think.
Turn the argument around and look at it from the user side: why would «anyone» click on a random image and song title? Growing a channel with «just» songs on youtube is super hard, how would youtube know who to show the «videos» to? they won’t show up in search for any popular topics, and even if it shows up randomly in browse the chances of anyone randomly clicking based on an image or the song title is small, which means that the initial impressions are so low that youtube favors other stuff to push. Music must be promoted in other channels and other avenues, and then those people pushed into youtube, or via a music video and thumbnail that might peak people’s interest - just releasing music on youtube with no push in other social media and through other channels will be slooooooooow, not because youtube is mean but because people in general probably won’t click - even though youtube sometimes pushes things and views go up, if the ratio for impressions to clicks are low then yt will drop the push and move on to somebody else’s video, that’s just how things work when there is a constant stream of new content on youtube - unless something stands out and triggers people it will be dropped - so look into promoting the songs/uploads through other channels, make people aware of the music and push them towards the channel and that way make youtube aware of what type of people listen to it and things might pick up - the old saying about marketing is true: if the greatest artist in the world plays alone in the forrest and nobody know it, did they even play ;)
@AndreSjoberg You are right in many things but small channels are only rarely given the exposure to wider audience and it's not due to slightly better thumbnail or video, better engagement when published, no, it's random. Does the algorithm know who to show it to? Absolutely, there are people who listen to music on UA-cam, to the same genre of music. That's my audience. The algorithm showed me your channel because I was looking for the answers, better optimisation. That's not the problem but slow exposure is. It is logical too, if you can buy the exposure, it's sure you're not getting enough for free.
@ That is true, but there is a reason why it’s random, and that is because you are one of *many* small channels, who are all competing for a limited and finite amount of exposures, and people are uploading all the time making it even harder for each person or channel to get that random boost of extra impressions - all those people who might have listened to your music is also shown loads of other musicians music, and loads of other people’s videos on other subjects they look at videos for, and many of them might be more established than you, meaning people are more likely to click on them rather than you unless there is something about your thumb or song title that *really* pops out - which would mean that from an algorithm standpoint if the first 100 YT show your music to, even though your music might have been a perfect match for them, if a certain percentage of those 50 or 100 didn’t click your upload is «dead». And that’s how things must work for there to be a system that somewhat works in a predictable way, the other option would just be random anarchy which could have been fun :) UA-cam can’t force people to click on things, and if the people who see it doesn’t click, then Yt must assume that it isn’t that interesting to people and move on to another fresh upload and try that out. So it’s up to the artist to build and accumulate a following by other means to reach the point where youtube *does* notice, where a tune gets plays pretty fast after upload without YT pushing it, using shorts, instagram, tiktok, bandcamp, facebook, etc. Growing from a small start publishing music on YT is more difficult in general because you don’t have the advantage of a title/thumbnail combo to «sell» it to people to get clicks and listens/plays, that’s just the way the world is and not YT conspiracy to keep small musicians down and force them to pay - one has to know and do marketing to drive traffic to the channel and the songs, be *very* active in the comments, connect with people there and hint about your music, use reddit, join musicians discords and communities and spread the word - *then* the channel subs will grow, more people will be exposed, then songs will get plays and youtube start pushing it to more people on a regular basis, *if* one does this for a while - but it will take work, just like in the good old days when band members roamed the streets the days before a concert pushing paper flyers to get attention for their little gig :)

I am currently promoting to low cpm countries on UA-cam promotions. My watch time hours have gone down significantly and I’m afraid that I’m going to get demonetized because of it. I am under 2K subscribers and I don’t know what to do next.

After vidsummit we went to uploading every 3 weeks. This way we have the time to do all the things you mentioned before every video. I feel like we are "getting it" faster uploading every 3 weeks instead of every week.

I started a kids' music channel about three months ago. It has 758,000-lifetime views, and over 2,000 subscribers. But the only problem is I only have 1950 watch time hours.

Have 73 subscribers. We were doing okay for a small niche (freediving) channel but the last video (Freediving A Famous Wreck) tanked for no reason we can see. Stopped growing at only 96 views and five likes yet it's the same quality and standard as the rest of our videos which have a lot more views and likes. We're at a complete loss. Any ideas?

After SIX YEARS we are finally monetized. I went on my desktop and turned my default settings to have every new video be set as "enable monetized," but every time I try to go live on my phone it defaults to not monetized-- so any views on the livestream are lost to monetization. I don't understand why it doesn't save my settings... they are set in the studio, but don't translate to vertical livestreams... maybe you know?

I think UA-cam has ghosted my ip address, my channel, my camera, the phone number I used to verify the gmail account, my laptop. I think I need to start all over with new equipment, new phone number, new channel and a new internet connection.

I just can’t seem to get the watch hours, or improve my click through rate or retention beyond 30 seconds. If I repeat a topic or format that does well, I end up with diminishing returns. Views are dwindling. I’ve shifted my topic choice and length to try to improve. But nothing seems to work and I’m feeling incredibly frustrated by it :(

I have a music channel. Checked the numbers BUT! The number of impressions is the key - how many times my video was shown to the viewers. Only twice did the UA-cam show my video to 10,000 people and those videos did well. The rest is around 100, sometimes even 6 or 0.
My conclusion is that YT throws your video once in a while to more people just so you don't lose hope. For the rest, they wait till you pay for showing your content to more people. No such thing as a free lunch.
It's especially pointless to analyse those videos that were shown more as that is completely random I think.
Turn the argument around and look at it from the user side: why would «anyone» click on a random image and song title? Growing a channel with «just» songs on youtube is super hard, how would youtube know who to show the «videos» to? they won’t show up in search for any popular topics, and even if it shows up randomly in browse the chances of anyone randomly clicking based on an image or the song title is small, which means that the initial impressions are so low that youtube favors other stuff to push. Music must be promoted in other channels and other avenues, and then those people pushed into youtube, or via a music video and thumbnail that might peak people’s interest - just releasing music on youtube with no push in other social media and through other channels will be slooooooooow, not because youtube is mean but because people in general probably won’t click - even though youtube sometimes pushes things and views go up, if the ratio for impressions to clicks are low then yt will drop the push and move on to somebody else’s video, that’s just how things work when there is a constant stream of new content on youtube - unless something stands out and triggers people it will be dropped - so look into promoting the songs/uploads through other channels, make people aware of the music and push them towards the channel and that way make youtube aware of what type of people listen to it and things might pick up - the old saying about marketing is true: if the greatest artist in the world plays alone in the forrest and nobody know it, did they even play ;)
@AndreSjoberg You are right in many things but small channels are only rarely given the exposure to wider audience and it's not due to slightly better thumbnail or video, better engagement when published, no, it's random. Does the algorithm know who to show it to? Absolutely, there are people who listen to music on UA-cam, to the same genre of music. That's my audience. The algorithm showed me your channel because I was looking for the answers, better optimisation. That's not the problem but slow exposure is. It is logical too, if you can buy the exposure, it's sure you're not getting enough for free.
@ That is true, but there is a reason why it’s random, and that is because you are one of *many* small channels, who are all competing for a limited and finite amount of exposures, and people are uploading all the time making it even harder for each person or channel to get that random boost of extra impressions - all those people who might have listened to your music is also shown loads of other musicians music, and loads of other people’s videos on other subjects they look at videos for, and many of them might be more established than you, meaning people are more likely to click on them rather than you unless there is something about your thumb or song title that *really* pops out - which would mean that from an algorithm standpoint if the first 100 YT show your music to, even though your music might have been a perfect match for them, if a certain percentage of those 50 or 100 didn’t click your upload is «dead». And that’s how things must work for there to be a system that somewhat works in a predictable way, the other option would just be random anarchy which could have been fun :) UA-cam can’t force people to click on things, and if the people who see it doesn’t click, then Yt must assume that it isn’t that interesting to people and move on to another fresh upload and try that out. So it’s up to the artist to build and accumulate a following by other means to reach the point where youtube *does* notice, where a tune gets plays pretty fast after upload without YT pushing it, using shorts, instagram, tiktok, bandcamp, facebook, etc. Growing from a small start publishing music on YT is more difficult in general because you don’t have the advantage of a title/thumbnail combo to «sell» it to people to get clicks and listens/plays, that’s just the way the world is and not YT conspiracy to keep small musicians down and force them to pay - one has to know and do marketing to drive traffic to the channel and the songs, be *very* active in the comments, connect with people there and hint about your music, use reddit, join musicians discords and communities and spread the word - *then* the channel subs will grow, more people will be exposed, then songs will get plays and youtube start pushing it to more people on a regular basis, *if* one does this for a while - but it will take work, just like in the good old days when band members roamed the streets the days before a concert pushing paper flyers to get attention for their little gig :)

Ive been on YT since 2016, and I have 875 subs and barely 2,000 watch hours the last year.
Ive decided not to give a f*** about analytics anymore, and make content just for the heck of it.
The less I worry about metrics, the better I am mentally. AND, the channel grows when I focus more on *QUALITY* rather than *QUANTITY* .
Most of us just wont make it on YT. That's what most small creators dont realise.

Hi there, I have a spiritual channel with card readings that talk about personal growth and development mostly. In january 2025 I will be on UA-cam for 5 years, I have only 430 subscribers, 1600 videos (mostly shorts with some long form weekly) and currently at 57 watchhours.
