    Put a transmission jack under each tire while the car is on the lift. (Obviously don't topple the car off the lift...) This will compress the suspension to simulate vehicle load. You might find the bad component that way. Sometimes when the suspension hangs it actually binds up a loose bushing or ball joint so you can't detect the free-play in it.

    Had similar knocking sound on my e92 after 80k. Could not see any loose links. Changing front struts fixed it. Getting them out of pinch clamps was the biggest issue as bolts had seized.

    Strut mount were mentioned already. Also check the preload on the rack&pinion nut. The cluncking could come from a not tight enough contact there.

    In the uk that tie rod end and the sway bar link would most likely fail the MOT test. That strut would probably fail as well.

    My E53 has play in the steering rack itself. Makes clunking noises and wobbles under moderate braking.

    Hey Nathan I would like to ask you for a tip as this is hard for me to diagnose (if you don't mind of course). I can do pretty much everything myself but I sometimes have to seek help elsewhere :)
    Front axle makes noises like if your arms and bushes are shot and need replacement. But they are all 2 months old (Lemforder set) and I barely drive the X5. It started off with corner turning at city speed only but now the noise is present each time I turn the wheel regardless if I drive or stand still and turn on the spot. But it does not translate into driving. The X5 goes straight no matter what and regardless if slow or full unlimited Autobahn speed. I suspect the upper front suspension mount which has a bearing in it (1st guess) or steering rack (2nd guess but just a wild one I do not really believe in). The somewhat clunky noise translates into the brake bedal. I can feel every clunk a tiny bit when it occurs which somewhat points me back to the control arm area again yet I know that a bad bearing can do the same as those things like to travel over any metal parts regardless where they originate throwing all good guesswork out of ballance :)
    Sorry for the lenght but tried to cover as much as possible to narrow it down the best.

  • @billyingram5394
    @billyingram5394 4 роки тому +2

    It's due to body roll as well as the struts could be shot man. Its obvious that they are bad by the leakage

      @@matthewbourne9624 My transfer case chain is stretched and that is my current diagnosis. A new one is like $80 and some rtv as well as about 8 hours of labor to pull it and replace it. I checked local junkyards already and they’re in worse shape than mine. My front driveshaft splines are still good enough to keep using so I only need the chain replaced. In the v8s they often start to stretch at 150k and for my 3.0i model I made it to 260k

    I just replaced my whole sway bar and links and this noise started. It's a lot worse than what you have...lots of popping. I was told it was the strut mounts as well, but they also said aftermarket sway bars might not be a proper fit. Not sure where to go from here

    90% of the time its strut bushing, check on top first you dont even need to jack the car up to check and replace top one, they are known to disintegrated quick. otherwise pull the strut for inner bushing or replacement of strut

  • @adyihsan2938
    @adyihsan2938 3 роки тому

    Hi. What was the solution in the end? I have the exact same issue on my 640d, changing the sway-bar links didn't do anything, I checked all the subframe bolts, and the play in the joints. I can't see anything that causes the noise.

    • @adyihsan7981
      @adyihsan7981 3 роки тому +2

      @BAIMS Hi, there were two issues, the clunk noise was a worn bushing on the suspension lower control arm. I took it to a guy who lifted the car up and put a pry bar between the lower control arm and pulled it and found about 2cm movement (excessive). I also video'd under the wheel arch, turned the wheels and saw a bit of movement as the click noise was heard in the same place, so I replaced both arms (always replace both). The bushes are cheap, but pressing them out needs specialist tools so replacing the arm is easier. The sounds you hear are different outside the car than inside. It was a click outside and a clunk inside. The second issue I found that the suspension top mount screws were over torqued, and as self tapping bolts, this meant the thread the self tapper makes into the top mount aluminium block was stripped and the screws were not actually holding the top mount as they should. This wasn't the cause of the noise though, but both also needed doing.
