Bob Dylan warns about flash photography in airplanes

- I've been very busy with school lately so I haven't been able to work on any "Swingin'" projects, but I thought I'd upload this weird clip just for kicks. Although this is a short and seemingly meaningless little video, it has some historical significance in that it was taken on Dylan's flight from Seattle to London on April 26, 1965, kicking off his legendary England Tour, which was documented by DA Pennebaker in "Don't Look Back". Probably the last year Bob could fly coach without getting mauled.

They didn't allow flash photograph on planes at that time because the flash was generally a "flash bulb". At 20,000 feet those bulbs could explode when flashed.

@@lena-9471 Really! They sometimes burst at ground level. PS. Looked it up and found this on Quora “Original flash bulbs were made out of extremely fine magnesium wire in an atmosphere of almost pure oxygen. When heated by the voltage of the battery when the picture was being taken the Magnesium would literally flash into an incandescent and explode.” Imagine that at a different pressure. The cabins are better pressurized now than previously.

So ultimately Dylan was correct.
@@merk9569 I remember using those bulbs. The coating on the outside of the bulb would melt from the intense heat of the flash. Which also raises the issue of fire. Those bulbs easily got hot enough to ignite some materials. And a fire inside a plane at 30,000 feet is bad news.

Swingin', I was wondering: are you the representative of some organization that has access to extensive archives of Bob Dylan's tapes and such, or are you simply a devoted individual with the same? I was wondering because I saw somewhere that you're in San Francisco. I'm in that vicinity, so I was wondering if there was some repository of these tapes and memorabilia that you control or represent that would be open for visitation. I ask because I love Dylan, as you do, and greatly appreciate all that you do. You're one of the best on UA-cam, and the whole web.
Hi there, no I don’t have any ties to organizations. I’m actually just a university student who collects things pertaining to Dylan through eBay and other means. I have a lot of rare records, posters, tapes, ticket stubs and other memorabilia, though (most of which I’ve uploaded scans of to my blog here: swinginpiggy.wordpress.com). I don’t have anything that no one has seen before; nothing like the Tulsa Archives. Unfortunately, I’m in Tahoe for the time being and won’t be back to the Bay until the Fall.

It's actually Joan Rivers.
@Skyler Greenish - Joan Jett was born in 1958. She'd only have been 7 years old in 1965, when that bit of video was shot on the airplane. It is most definitely not Joan Jett, but looks exactly like Joan Baez, and Joan Baez did go along on Bob's tour to England that year. She appears in the first 2 seconds of the video.
