  • I love answering the question of "should I become an Orthodontist" and "Does it matter what school I attend".
In fact, I just got asked today by someone on UA-cam "what school did you attend?". This is funny because that nearly never gets asked of me when I'm actually practicing.
In this video, I go over what you should ask yourself if you are thinking of becoming an Orthodontist. I also go over my thoughts on what school to attend.
Make sure to subscribe for new videos weekly, or else you are doomed to have a crooked smile for the rest of your life! 😅

You're a very warm and caring orthodontist and have a nice bedside manner. When I think of ortho I always thought of my orthodontist. It's basically about a 2 year relationship and connection when getting braces because you'll be seeing them/going there for awhile. My sister got braces as a kid and as an adult I went to the same one I think in 2010. I managed to get a family discount. She was so nice and warm and the office was very comfortable and she had game consoles for the kids to play. At one point I broke my wire in the back because I had coconut shrimp thinking it wasn't going to be bad. Then she said ''must've been some good shrimp." I also had to get a gingivectomy, she referred me to a general dentist. I told her I wanted to be a periodontist and she said ''they're waitin' for you."
I miss her so much and it's because of my own dental experience and her that I want to be a type of dentist. Sadly she passed away around 2015 but I'll always treasure those memories and her. And who knew that the type of connections and relationships formed in a dentist office! Best wishes to you, Dr!

As I'm deciding between podiatry, medicine, and dentistry, I have always been interested in the hands-on aspect of dentistry and the ability to have more of a flexible lifestyle. I also am interested in the business aspect of healthcare, and think it would be a nice mix of business and healthcare running a dental office. But again, one of my first priorities is to have some sort of life outside of dentistry. I get that there are medical specialties more conducive to lifestyle, but I always hear dentists have pretty solid hours considering the income. My concern though, is that I really value speaking with my patients and interacting with them during the day, and i was not sure whether dentists had much of this type of interaction while they are performing procedures of the mouth. When I shadowed a pediatrician and hematologist, I enjoyed the fact that they spoke with them for 10-15 minutes in the visit room. Would you be able to speak on this matter a little more in depth? How are the connections that dentists and orthodontists create with patients long term?

    • @ThriveDentist
      @ThriveDentist  4 роки тому +4

Hey Grossfield. I like how in depth you are thinking for your future. To be honest I only get probably a max of 5 minutes per patient in orthodontics as we see so many every day. Dentists are only with roughly 10-15 patients so they get more time per patient. That being said, if you own your own office, which many dentists do, you can see as many patients as you like. Therefore you can talk with them as long as you like!

Know this video is a couple months old now. So I don't really expect a response but would be great to get your input and thought. I'm 23 years old and have been working since out of high school. I didn't want to really jump into college because I didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life. My entire life I have loved helping people as much as possible and making a difference in peoples lives. I want to be able to make connections with people and interact. I don't mind labor work that's all I've ever done but everyone says I'm really smart as well and I should apply myself. But more importantly like you said it's 12 years of school. I wouldn't get done until I'm 35. Do you think its still a worth while investment or should i be looking to apply myself to other things? I want to be successful and show people that i can do it.

With same degree and same brand of braces (Damon) a doctor is charging me a lower amount because he did not have that senior level experience
    Another doctor,
same degree as previous one (Masters Dental Surgery - Orthodontist) is charging me double the amount for the same procedure.
Only difference is--he has been in the industry twice longer than the previous doctor

I am debating if I should go for an ortho program, which means more living on budget & losing income, vs doing ortho residency for 2-3 years. Hi. We're almost on the same path. Im a dentist too, turning 32yo next year. Been doing general dentistry and simple cases of ortho in the past few years. In my county (philippines), we have short orthodonic programs like for 1 year. But it only teach you the most basic cases. Been interested and i have considered doing ortho residency since more of my patients are ortho cases. For sure it's much cheaper here than there in Canada. I'm budgeting 40,000 USD for the 3 years program. Including cost of living and my own place already.

You can get better. Try starting now one step at a time. Volunteering or any other activities that involve a bit of talking

Are you practically the only orthodontist in the office, if not how many are there? Is everyone else an assistant then? They probably don't make a lot of money like orthodontists do, and I don't want to go to 4 years of dental school and find that the job is too competitive and I can not become the orthodontist who is in charge. Also, how "Intellectual" does the job get? I want a low-stress job, and I do not like math and science. Just using my hands, and being my own boss, and getting high pay. I will study hard and suffer through STEM to become a dentist if I have to, but after dental school, I don't want a job where I constantly have to think hard and do work outside the office. Do you get a lot of free time? I envision that technology helps you align the wires to make it straight, and you put it on, and its an easy job.

Hey Chloe, if you are looking for a low stress/easy job definitely do not do anything related to Dentistry as it is the opposite of that.

@@ThriveDentist sorry if im bothering one more thing-- IK you need a lot of science schooling before becoming an ortho, but once you actually become one do you use a lot science/math?

@@chloe3343 Hey Chloe. It's definitely a stressful job as you have 50 patients or so that want perfect teeth every day but I love it. Yes we use a lot of science everyday but it becomes way easier with time!
