just got my braces off last month and i love the results. during the process i learned a lot and i really want to become one when i’m older. i’m currently 14.
I am interested in becoming an orthodontist, I’m a junior in high school and I’ve wanted to be a pediatrician my whole life but I’ve lately been more interested in dentistry, could you maybe tell me all the schooling that you did and what it took for you to become an ortho?

Hi! I am a student in primary school and I want to become an orthodontic, but I have problems. You need to be very smart. High school is more challenging than in America i think. You have to be great - in europe that means you have to have mostly A's. I wonder if it's worth the time. And the cool part is the dental-orthodontist school is FREE. I will go into high school next year and I really wonder if its worth the time to study and than go to college. Love from Europe 🇪🇺
Thank you Dr Nate for this video. I've been in Gen Dentistry for nine years and just getting into Ortho, your videos are so helpful, I'm watching everything I can before my working interview tomorrow!
Hey Dr.Nate! I am currently a Highschool student that will be leaving for college very soon. I havetaken all these dual Enrollment classes and Ap classes for a major in bio so I can become a doctor, but I’m unsure if this is really what I want to do. I was told doctors work a lot of barely get to see friends or family and I didn’t want that happening to me. Orthodontist has had good reviews but I’m not sure if I want to become one because I heard it’s a lot of responsibility. You have to open up your own shop and buy all these materials for it, hire the people to work for you and I’m not sure if I’ll be ready to do all that . Is this what you had to do when you fully became an Orthodontist?
Hey Misha. Everything depends on how you want your life to become. I want my life to be as fulfilled as possible which means I want to grow, learn, enjoy family/friends etc as much as possible so I constantly work on my business and personal life. I believe there is no better way to have an amazing life then have your own business and yes that's what I did. I love it and would never have it any other way. Also remember if you become a business owner you can have others work for you therefore you can make an income while still going on vacations, enjoying friends and family etc.:)

Hello, my name is mike and I am a junior in high school and I’ve been looking into becoming a orthodontist and I have a few questions for you. How often do you do surgery on a patient and how difficult would you consider most operations. How many years of schooling and on job training did you have to do. And lastly I was wondering, how hard is the competition to become a orthodontist? Thank you, you seem like a really good orthodontist and I hope someday I can be like you.
Hey Mike, we rarely do surgery on patients, it took me 12 years of school to become and Orthodontist and it's very competitive to become and Ortho but absolutely worth all the hard work!

How do you think life of an orthodontist would be back in the 80s? I see most doctors on their computers now as a-posed to spending that time with the patients.
Hi Dr. Nate! Thank you for the informative video. I am currently a dental student considering orthodontics. What do you think is the most difficult aspect of being an orthodontist?
@hangluu I think the most difficult aspect of Ortho is managing so many patients. A GP will see roughly 8-15 patients a day whereas at a busy ortho practice you can see sometimes see 100 patients. You need great systems and assistants at those type of practices.

@@ThriveDentist Thank you so much for your insight! Do you get most of your patients from referrals? Or from own marketing? Do you find it difficult to recruit enough patients to be financially sound?

Does your office do indirects? I shadow an orthodontist I am in highschool and they do this to save time so the orthodontist does not have to spend a while adjusting the brackets once they are placed on before bonding.
Hey Nathan! I am thinking about becoming an orthodontist, and I have a question. How many years of schooling do you need to become an orthodontist, what is the starting salary, and if you were to start you own practice, would you be comfortable with actually getting paid? How does that work? And directly after school, can you start your own practice or do you work at another clinic. I know these are a lot of questions, but I saw in another comment that you go in at about 10 and leave at 6.Compared to the other types of doctors I've been looking at, that's pretty good. I was thinking about becoming a surgeon but the 6 am arrival time blew me off. I would not cope with that. So I would really appreciate if you answered my questions, and great video!
Hey Jef, it took me 12 years to become an Orthodontist but you could maybe do it in 10 or 11 years. It's definitely a lot of schooling but well worth it. Most people work for another office for a few years (or maybe forever) until they feel comfortable starting their own office. Owning an office is definitely not for everyone but I love it. Surgeons have a great job too because they are typically done earlier and work less hours total but it takes a toll on your body. I'll be honest with you I worked 9-6 as an associate but my office hours are 10-6 yet as an owner I "work" way more than that. I don't really consider what I do work only because I truly love it which sounds corny I know but it's true!

Ohhh that's a really tough one. I've actually never had a degenerative TMJ patient in any of our offices ever, not even in residency so I'm probably the wrong person to ask.
I just have a quick question. The other day I was scratching an itch on my lip when I yawned my thread got stuck on my braket, I did not know and yanked my arm back down and my braket came lose. What do I do?
I'm getting my braces off soon and wanted to know if they use the digital scanner as impressions for the retainer or I would have to use the goo impressions. Another question I have is if my orthodontist will ask to shave my teeth because I think my smile looks great with my canines the way they are and I wouldn't want them shaved down.
I think i m goona go to dental school. I have got these braces. Hurt me a lot. But i want to help people like i had this problem. I don't know if it worth financially. Like can someone end up financially free too at the end of becoming dentist. Although my whole point is not about money. It's also about helping. But people gotta think about money too. What do you think doc.
Ok so I have braces right now. I recently got my turbos taken off. When they were getting the glue off from behind my two front teeth it felt like biting into cold ice cream. Will it feel like that when I get the glue off of the front of my teeth?
Hmm sometimes people are sensitive when removing bite turbos or composite glue from the braces. Everyone is different but yes it will likely feel similar.
I am having a problem. I wore a pallate expander when I was 21 for a couple of years and it messed up my palalle. I had a even pallate before I wore it. It caused my pallate to be uneven with the left side wider than the right and the arm of the expander cut into the roof of my mouth and left a permanent knot on the right side where its more narrow. I have been unhappy about this so long. I don`t know what to do or where to go so I can this fixed. Every oral surgeon I go to want to charge me for a consult and never help me and I get nowhere with orthodontic consultations either because they tell me they don`t put expanders on adults or they wont expand it so it will be even on both sides. The issue is the uneveness is really bothering me and I want something done to make my pallate symmetrical again. The places I go to dont listen and want to do anything for me and I hate that I am stuck like this because it was not like this before. I feel like I get the run around everywhere I go and ripped off and charged for nothing. Do you have any suggestions?
Hey that's a tough problem. It's true we don't use expanders on adults unless you do surgery. Sounds like a tough issue that may not have any good answer.
Sir i have drooling problem.. in order to avoid spit coming outside from mouth i swallow it By pressing my tongue to upper and lower teeths back.. Will it not make my upper and lower teeths to come forward? Pls reply im having this doubt from many months. It drives me crazy😥
Hey Nathan, I wrote a comment four days ago, I wasn't expecting you to reply, but to my pleasant surprise, you did. So I have one more question, in your opinion, what is the best state to live in for an orthodontist, and what state do you live in? Thanks!
Hey Jeff, I went to school in California but it's probably one of the worst states for business. We live in Texas now and it's been great for us. The midwest states are probably the best for business but you have to balance business with overall life quality and that's more of a personal decision.
Hi! Im really interested in becoming an orthodontist. I am 20 years old and will be graduating dental hygiene school in May of 2021. Is it possible I can apply with my bachelors in dental hygiene and also do the prerequisites classes that dental schools require? Or would I have to get my bachelors in something else. Thanks!
Hey Olivia. Definitely ask your counselor but we had probably 6 or 7 hygienist in my DDS class. One of them was my good friend and he didn't take any extra classes a part from his hygiene classes.
Doctor, lam doing ortho now. 4 premolars has been extracted for the treatment.. during last sitting, orthodontist told me to visit dentist for filling my second premolar.. dentist told the cavity is too deep even though lam not feeling any pain.. he suggested to do RCT on that teeth and to continue ortho and once ortho gets completed, crown can be installed.. but doctor lam so worried about that does a RCT teeth is strong enough to withstand the brace force?? does it get break during brace adjustment??
Can I have sarpe surgery done to expand my palate if i am missing my first molor and tooth number 10 in the front. I am 28 year old female had previous ortho treatment that went really bad. I wore a palate expander when I was 21 and it left my pallate very uneven. I have root resorption to and will need dental implants on some teeth. In order to fix this mess I will need surgery. I am just wondering how this will be done if I am missing some teeth. How can they expand my palate if my molor is missing or can they expand it by the bone without using the tooth. I am also wondering about the dental implants to. Should i wait to after ortho to get the implants or can they put a temporary tooth theRE so I wont have a gap or just leave the gap How does that work?
@@ThriveDentist ok thanks for replying Do i have any options to have something in the gaps while in braces or will i have to have the gaps wearing braces until I can get dental implants. I know they have false teeth flippers, etc but I am not sure those could be worn with braces
Hi, I am an ESL “ English as a second language”student at NOVA “ Northern Virginia community college”in Virginia, U.S. I want to become an Orthodontist in future, so could you please tell me what is the best, easiest way to achieve my goal? I am 31😐and I don’t want to waste my time anymore..😉 Thank you for all you do.👍
As far as fastest I would recommend a school like U of the Pacific as their DDS program is only 3 years. If you are looking for easy than probably don't try ortho because it's one of the hardest programs to get into after Dental school😣
Aahh I’m debating on what I should do in the future!! But I have braces right now, and seeing how my orthodontist deals with it it’s like really simple for her.. just the amount of education that you have to take scares me :( Alsooo.. what colors for the bands would you recommend 😁 I’ve had silver and right now I have dark pink! Thinking about violet next.. but I for sure need more options lol
Hey Maddie retainers retain your teeth in the same position so if your teeth are still straight just get a new set of retainers. If they are crooked then likely braces again.
hi i’ve actually been researching about orthodontist and there article saying that orthodontist is dying out for the future generations and the pay for orthodontist will lower dramatically do you think this is true
Love this comment because you are thinking far ahead which is great. If you go into any field thinking it will be good for the next 50 years I believe you are mistaken. Technology is getting better and better so we have to continually evolve but I believe a version of orthodontics will be around for a really long time. What it will exactly look like in the future I am not sure but it's exciting either way!
Hi I’m vlad, And I’m planning on getting my braces next week but I’ll be going to college(different city 3hrs away) next fall and currently don’t know what to do rn. Would you recommend I get it now or wait till I go to college and then find a clinic there and do it or what? Thanks in advance New sub btw:)
Hey Vlad. We have patients that go to school far away and come back just for the normal college breaks (every 3 months or so). It's definitely not ideal and you will likely prolong treatment a little. If you are planning on attending the same college for 2 years or more I would probably just get them done near the college you are attending. It's really hard to switch Orthodontists mid treatment. Hope that helps!
Nathan Coughlin I’m really trying to get it over w but idk... been postponing my appointments to get it on bcuz I don’t wanna there to be a situation where I would have to wear it for a long time and have to spend more money. And the college I’ll be going to is 3 hrs away.
I’m in high school and I do maths B but I really feel as if it’s really hard for me and I don’t want to fail and impact my ATAR I want to switch to maths A (easier maths) but idk if maths is really important to become an orthodontist So my question is, do you need methods/maths B to become an orthodontist? Love your videos and keep up the good work😀
Oh and another factor may be that I do physics but don’t do chemistry and biology It says the prerequisite is only English and assumed knowledge is one of methods/maths B, physics, biology or chemistry So since it says one, could it be possible to be an orthodontist with just studying physics in high school?
For your second question as far as specific courses I would talk to a school counsellor as they will give you the exact requirements. I don't want to say something that may be incorrect!
Nope. Takes roughly 10-12 years to become an orthodontist either way. If you want to be board certified then it's just another test/presentation of cases.
Hello doctor! I’m currently an orthodontics resident. I was wondering how the transition between residency and private practice was. Did you feel fully prepared and confident when you graduated residency?
Hey Alan. Yes I definitely felt ready for the "real world". Of course you learn a ton when you get out of school but we had a great base to work with so I felt great coming out. For me treatment planning improved a lot over time and I learned what works better in my hands.
I’m getting my BS next spring and the next step is dental school, and i’ve been contemplating dentistry or ortho for years now and i think your video helped me decide! orthodontics all the way!!! 🤍🤍🤍

Up to you if you want them shaved and typically they take the goo impressions for retainers.
Do you provide treatments for both orthodontist and general dentistry procedures or do you just stick to orthodontist related treatment?
Just ortho.
hey Dr Nate, why do some places make a mold of my teeth before i get braces
@@ThriveDentist Ok thank you for the information!!
Is the pay of owning your own practice enough to pay the high expenses of modern dental/ortho programs?
Yes absolutely!
Hi doctor
In orthodontic treatment any painful processes are there?
I have a question: is it true that if I don’t wear my elastics in the morning I can just double them at night ??? Please answer!!!
Lol. Nope. Wearing all day is the only way to get out of braces fast.
Love him ❤❤ and he’s videos 😂
@@ThriveDentist Ok thanks!
Nathan Coughlin Ahh okay thats good to hear! That was really helpful and Im definitely going to talk to my counselor as well. Thank you!
We move teeth with RCTs all the time. If done correctly should be no problem.
Hello, dental implants will be done after ortho and they should be able to do a SARPE without molars.
I am 31😐and I don’t want to waste my time anymore..😉
Thank you for all you do.👍
As far as fastest I would recommend a school like U of the Pacific as their DDS program is only 3 years. If you are looking for easy than probably don't try ortho because it's one of the hardest programs to get into after Dental school😣
Nathan Coughlin Thank you so much for your suggestion ...👍🙏🙏
Aahh I’m debating on what I should do in the future!! But I have braces right now, and seeing how my orthodontist deals with it it’s like really simple for her.. just the amount of education that you have to take scares me :(
Alsooo.. what colors for the bands would you recommend 😁 I’ve had silver and right now I have dark pink! Thinking about violet next.. but I for sure need more options lol
pre covid. it ain't the same anymore is it? taking your mask off to talk etc... those were the days!
I have a question I lost my retainers and I haven’t wore them since March do I have to get braces again or can I just get new retainers?
Hi I’m vlad,
And I’m planning on getting my braces next week but I’ll be going to college(different city 3hrs away) next fall and currently don’t know what to do rn. Would you recommend I get it now or wait till I go to college and then find a clinic there and do it or what?
Thanks in advance
New sub btw:)
I’m in high school and I do maths B but I really feel as if it’s really hard for me and I don’t want to fail and impact my ATAR
I want to switch to maths A (easier maths) but idk if maths is really important to become an orthodontist
So my question is, do you need methods/maths B to become an orthodontist?
Love your videos and keep up the good work😀
Oh and another factor may be that I do physics but don’t do chemistry and biology
It says the prerequisite is only English and assumed knowledge is one of methods/maths B, physics, biology or chemistry
So since it says one, could it be possible to be an orthodontist with just studying physics in high school?
Hi Vanessa. Sorry no idea as I took all normal classes in Canada so I don't even know what you are talking about :(
For your second question as far as specific courses I would talk to a school counsellor as they will give you the exact requirements. I don't want to say something that may be incorrect!
what’s the salary? if you don’t mind me asking..
Try this video. It may help answer your question ua-cam.com/video/WTPZJRiuBLA/v-deo.html
Is it true it only takes 4 years to become a orthodontist? And 12 for a certified one
Nope. Takes roughly 10-12 years to become an orthodontist either way. If you want to be board certified then it's just another test/presentation of cases.
How much money you make in a month .. Sir
Hey Ashish I made a video on that. Check this out ua-cam.com/video/WTPZJRiuBLA/v-deo.html
Is it extremely hard to get accepted to orthodontist resident?
It's pretty tough. You probably need to be in the top 5% of your dental class or have some other in.
Is it hard to be a orthodontist
Nope. It's awesome.
You should be on E entertainment or somethin
♠️ how you meant to floss loooool
Are you the owner of the place?
Yup

Good luck!!
