[PT. 1] YOU'VE GOT TO GET YOUR WRISTS ACTIVE IN THE SWING | Paddy's Golf Tip #8 | Padraig Harrington

  • It seems that many players have been conned into thinking that an effective, powerful swing results from turning the shoulders or using the body. In actuality, 70% of a player's speed and face control comes from how well they use the wrist.
    This is Part 1 of a two-part lesson where I focus on the role that the wrists play during the swing. Be sure to set your notifications and tune in for Part 2, coming later this week.

    I tried this at the range tonight and it totally transformed my iron shots. Before i was trying to smash the ball hard with limited success, but this showed me it's all about the timing of the release coupled with a smooth tempo. Thanks!

    Great demonstration of the use of the wrists. I used to use them more the way you explained and could hit an acceptable distance. Now I notice I am not hinging them at the top of the swing. Tried your drill of consecutive swings with 5 balls lined up. This frees up the wrists. Excellent thank you. Got some power back.I was trying to extend my hands farther away from my body at the top but it doesn't feel smooth or natural. Too much strain and becomes unathletic.

  • @legend9018
    @legend9018 3 роки тому +5

    Great video, could not agree more. So many instructors and videos are trying to increase lag by having you hold your wrist angles and not flip. What they don’t say is that all players have to release their wrist angles which means all players flip. The key is when the flip happens. Amateur players definitely release earlier than better players but we all flip. The key is timing when the release happens and lag is created by lower body rotation, not by artificially holding your wrists back. Well done Paddy 🏌🏻‍♂️

  • @johnnybravo9087
    @johnnybravo9087 3 роки тому +12

    Thanks, Paddy! Great to know that an elite player flips their wrists. Many an ‘expert’ sees a body stall & flip and starts teaching ‘hold the angle’ nonsense.

      Now I watch players who are built more like I am. 5'9 - 195 lbs. Stocky. None of this left arm straight hands away from the body. Just keep the wrists loose and the arms and shoulders without tension and the ball goes farther with less effort. Just turn a little faster and more with feet,ankle knees and hips. Narrower stance helps too if your hips aren't super flexible.

    • @supercarn
      @supercarn 3 роки тому

      Many elite players don't flip the wrists though. There is not one way to swing a golf club you just need to choose a method that works best for you

    You probably know already but your theory on skill learning is spot on.
    The best way to learn a new movement pattern is not to do 100s of reps of the ideal but do 100s alternating extremes around the ideal. Your body will then naturally zone in on the ideal without being forced.

      As a scratch player Ive watched quite a few of these. What Paddy THINKS he does and what he does are two different things. This one, for example, the moment the smalls muscles and joints (wrists) are focused on, you're screwed. Not good advice. Yes he's a Hall of Famer, but MANY elite golfers can't translate what they're doing properly. "Active" wrists is not a good explanation. I think what he is means is "relaxed wrists" without tension, and let them do what they will do naturally without tension holding them off.

    Excellent tip along the lines of what the great Bob Toski said.
    Noted teacher Bob Toski, though, loves to hit mammoth drives from his knees. The point, Toski says, is that the hands, wrists and arms can generate a huge amount of power.
    “I just don’t understand what these people (big-muscle advocates) are talking about,” Toski says. “The body can’t make a swing, because the body isn’t touching the club. You can’t get any speed from your shoulders.

    Why is it that in some turning point in golf instruction the gurus of golf decided that mere mortals should not actively apply the hands, wrists and fingers in the golf shot?
    I wonder if the introduction of steel shafts had the greatest influence on the evolution of golf instruction? In over 200 years of golf as we know it, the average player still shoots 90+.
    The eagle will forever torment in teaching the penguin to fly. I’ve only shot under par a handful of times in my 45 years and over 3500 rounds of golf; most will never break 80.
    How can we soar like you, Paddy?

    Good ideas for rhythm too. Highly recommend that one practice off of a tee with slow 3/4 swings. Practicing off a tee allows for a smooth easy transition and tempo without worrying about where the ball is going or hitting down on the ball. p.s. I'm a former PGA Class A Professional.

    "a firm chip". 80 yards. It takes me a full swing with my PW to get there hahaha. Seriously tho, your lessons have been so helpful so far, especially the grip one and the SCH, thank you Paddy!

      I'm happy with an 80 yards pitching wedge for sure. I'm not overly trying but that's what I take as my yardage haha. Amazing how he didn't even try

    Sir Paddy, I have to say I was never a big fan of yours. But after seeing your passion for helping others...aka...
    Common Weekend Warriors...aka...Hackers...here on UA-cam, I now know I was all wrong about you Sir. And for that, I sincerely apologize. This has to be the best most to the point succinct lesson I have ever seen. No positioning P 1-6 talk, but just simply how to freely swing and control the club, specifically the face. Hats off Sir! Thank you for your unselfish love of the World's Greatest game! I'll be rooting for you from know on in medal tournament play, but being American, no can do in the Ryder Cup! Lol! But still, good luck to the Europeans there as well! God Bless, and I wish you the best of luck out on The Tour! Your new fan...

    Great video. You can get something called the ‘Swingcaddy’, which clicks when your flick your wrists properly. It’s quite expensive but worth the investment

    Great lesson. For anything from 7 iron down I can stand with feet virtually a foot apart and whip through quickly with arms and loose wrists and yeah the ball really gets out there. Seems like there is much less to go wrong.

    Why have I not seen this channel? Maybe I have. Best instruction video out there by a dude who has a few majors to his name.
