I’ve watched hundreds of golf swing tutorials on here, but by far this is the most beneficial most incredibly accurate code breaking explanation of THE way to swing a club! Top draw stuff! Only problem is trying to adopt it after spending years doing it the wrong way. 😒
21.57 Hi Rob, like everyone says you are a quality teacher! My problem with this video is how you get the wrists to the starting position of the drill when you are out on the course etc? Quite a few people have asked this question with no response? I struggle with the wrists at the beginning of the swing to be able to achieve the perfect position that you set out for the starting point of the drill drill. Keep up with the inst Rob, many thanks!!
absolutely one of the best lessons yet Rob. you rock buddy. I just wish some of my friends that shoot over 100 would adopt your simple mechanics. pure gold. after 3 yrs of following you, ive gone from a low 90s player to a high 70s/low 80s player. again, pure gold. thank you as always
Pure gold. Tried this today and have never struck the ball so pure. Actually, I have struck it pure a few times like this but didn't know why! You are the best instructor on UA-cam. Thank you
I don't believe I've seen it explained in one of your other videos but is the left arm 'give blood' positioned like the right arm or turned clockwise (for a right handed player)?
Rob, I just tried this drill after watching your lesson. Best contact with the ball I think I have ever done. Ordered Hack motion to keep getting better. This lesson might have saved me from quitting golf!
After doing some drills with this in my livingroom, i cant believe how good this feels. My swing is so sequenced and powerful. If it works for me when hitting live, i dont know that i would even want to put the club down on the ground to address the ball. Very helpful to put the butt of the club on the ball with the hinge in place. It gives me a great starting/focus point. Literally all i have to do is swing and it feels so good and powerful. Thanks Rob!
I agree that burr on the ball thing is AMAZING. It’s also feels like a good reference point for release. I agree this feels unbelievably smooth and powerful.
Wow, I just had my friend video me yesterday while we were playing, and it was very revealing. No wrist hinge and my body twisting around. Excited to watch this wrist hinge video. Thank you Rob for great content.
Hi Rob! I'm following you from Belgium, where I live. English isn't my mother tongue (it's French), so I really appreciate the clarity of your explanations and diction, and your very rigorous approach. It helps me to better understand the mechanics of the golf swing and to improve my game.
I hinged on top, but never did the wrists set up on the bottom make so much sense..I tried it today I'm hitting much more solid and consistent..thank you for the lesson!
Jack Nicklaus(GOAT) took the clubhead back straight along the ball line until his hands passed the right leg. (no wrist hinge). Once hands pass the right leg, the club is raised(lifted) by the right bicep(how we pick up anything) When we raise the club with right elbow bending, the wrists hinge naturally.
Pointing out the ulnar deviation at address is a “huge” thing in my opinion. Very few teachers talk about this and most people I see play have already cocked the wrist at address which makes it very difficult to get the correct wrist position at the top from that starting position. Only thing I would point out is that when you show yourself going back towards the ball on the downswing it may be worth mentioning this is for demonstration of the wrist position and not necessarily where the club will end up in motion. I only point this out because I have been someone who has visually seen a position and practiced it statically to where I ended up swinging on the wrong path. Keep up the good work.
Without a doubt the 2 things that tremendously helped my game was - 1. flat wrist (not cupped) and 2 . feeling connected as in feeling my pit arms staying against my body like being able to hold a towel throughout the swing between my pit arms and body. I used to have a badly cupped left wrist resulting in bad inconsistency going left and right and every bad shots one can come up with. As soon as I started to "feel" and look at my wrist to make sure it was flat I immediately started to fall on plane and hit much better shots and if I start to play bad like pulling or pushing I have a reminder to then "stay connected" and make sure I transfer weight by forcing myself to finish the swing which in turn will make you have a complete weight transfer (I force myself to lift the left heel a tiny bit on the back swing then stamp it down on the follow through) But the left wrist was a game changer for me and most likely shaved off at least 6-10 strokes off my game. I am a low index of 12.9 being about 20 2 years ago. In golf you learn something everytime one gets out. Great video.
fantastic video and demonstration, very clear explanation about how the club and arms work through the plane without any "lifting" or looping. thank you!
Rob, this is excellent. One question I’d love your feedback on: how does this P2 position “look” and reconcile with the visual of the grid? I’ve been religiously trying to get the club head to follow the outer track on takeaway, but now seeing this, I’m wondering what now to do, since shaft is parallel to toe line at P2. Thanks,
Rob: in your drill you're demonstrating the arms moving to the position where the club shaft is parallel to the ground with no body turn. Is that just for the drill or is that your preferred method for starting a swing?
This is one of your most important videos Rob. I used the knowledge I gained from it to have a breakthrough at the range today. I'm working hard at the 10 words of s&t, using drills like the wrench and the bowler. I was hitting these push fades with driver. I was happy with the push part of it, because that suggested a good inside-out club path, and I was striking the center of the face perfectly but I must have been opening the face to the path ever so slightly. That was the only conclusion. But where was it happening? So then I thought of this video, and I wondered if I was hinging my wrists too much on the backswing. I took my normal backswing, looked back at my hands and there it was..my lead wrist was cupped. I remembered the drill you talk about in this video and I started to work with it: pre-setting the ideal wrist and arm structure, and it was the magic missing ingredient. All of drives were now straight or push draws (which can appear straight to the naked eye) or just straight pushes. Such a good feeling to troubleshoot a problem. Thanks to what you teach here. No other golf instructor mentions how hinging too much will lead to a cupped lead wrist. This is why I keep watching your videos over and over, because the knowledge soaks in with repetition , and I keep having breakthroughs. So thanks again Rob!
Rob. You always do such a great job. Great content. Straight to the point. Always works when Input into practice. Gifted instructor. Wish you much success. Btw is it different for driver?
This is exactly why I changed my swing completely and learned the one plane swing. I found with the one plane, nothing has to be timed, my swing is consistent now and my ball striking has improved by leaps and bounds! The wrist cock is built into my swing and I don't have to think about anything. Weight forward, always lean, check grip, shoulders start the swing and arms follow, easy peasy. Tom Saguto is an excellent instructor and has helped thousands of golfers around the world.
I've recently been struggling with a face open to path. My path looks okay inside to out, but at contact the face is open. I'm not really sure why but I decided it was all in my wrist and that I needed to feel excessive extension. But watching this video has reminded me to consider other causes. You remind us that at P2 the face should not be excessively open or closed.
Whoa!! Where have you been this entire time and thank you to the alogorithm!! Ex baseball player here and have always had issues with over using my hands/wrists. To the point I have studied just abbot everything there is about wrists in the golf swing. This was the best and simplest explanation I have heard!!! Thank you sir!! Also do you have any videos on using hinge/wrists while chipping and pitching? I have been trying to take all the hinge out on these shots but it's not working.
Awesome video Rob! One question.....when practicing and playing after getting good with this drill should one FEEL as though the angle is held through impact? I would imagine that the angle is actually releasing somewhat at impact but the FEEL I'm looking for is that the angle is being held? Also, same wrist action and feels with all clubs including driver? Thanks again!
Love this video and cant wait to try the technique…one question about the grip - would having a strong lead hand grip be detrimental to maintaining a flat lead wrist at the top and through the downswing and/or would a neutral grip be better? cheers
Great video, as always! One question: how to you get from address position (with ~20 degrees wrist extension) to the flat wrist position? Not for the purposes of the drill, but in a typical swing.
Great video. I do have a question on the hands coming through the ball. Do you extend your hands while hitting the ball as I would do hitting a nail with a hammer?
Rob, The only part I’m unclear about is impact. Don’t we want some left wrist flex (lag?) at impact? Your video “The #1 Wrist Mistake in the Golf Swing” seems different from this one where you turned the wrists at the top to close the face slightly. I hope I’m not confusing others with this question.
Fair question. The exact amount of flexion/extension will vary due to individual grips and desired shot shapes. My slight preference for most amateur golfers would be to lean towards more flexion (face closed) than extension (face open). This video is discussing the more stable wrist conditions during a specific part of the swing, but at impact I'd like to see some lead wrist flexion to create some shaft lean.
Love this video and your channel Rob.. Does this drill work for Driver as well? Really struggling with wrists at top of swing with driver . Going to take this to the range. Any insight on what takes club up to the top from this pre set position. Thanks again ⛳️
I over hinge and strike phenomenal distances with accurate club face at impact. When I do your drill all is lost and so is my cositancy?I think my over hinge is staying in plane do to my large arm muscles.
Question Rob…how about incorporating “hands in” into the drill. That would mean the shaft is not parallel to the target line at P2, but conforming more to the grid. Good or bad idea?
Can you work with the core version without radial/ulner and still be in a good place just knowing flexion/extension numbers and how radial can influence too much extension??
Tnanx Rob. Would it be OK or not to place the club in P2, take the proper grip ( flat wrist) , then place the club at P1? If ok, at P2 grip setup is club face straigh or at mt spine angle?
Hi Rob, does this drill work with the driver? Whenever I use this drill with the driver, I tend to slice it because of the automatic reaction to hold the wrist "hinge" throughout the swing, resulting in big amount of shaft lean which is not desirable for driver.
Great question. It depends on the subscription level you have. The basic level (CORE) and mid-level (PLUS) is lead wrist only. The advanced level (PRO) is both wrists.
To make square contact with this drill, are you rolling the forearms at impact? I do this drill and the ball shoots off to the right. And when I think about this while playing, I hit hasel rockets…
This is totally going to help my chicken wing flying elbow on the back swing. Excited to try this at the range tomorrow. Thank you! Best video I've seen in a long time. Thank you!
Your demos of P2 around 6 mins or so wasn’t a move from P1 to P2 but straight to P2. So we didn’t see any shoulder rotation or lateral club/grip movement associated with a dynamic takeaway. What am I missing? Should the hands have travelled more along the hand path than what we see in your P2 position?
I like your tuition. I have one observation. You propose keeping your weight on the front foot -then you demo all sorts of grip/whatever -and you are not keeping your weight on the front foot. Why?
I now allow my head to turn in unison with my backswing to watch my wrist and lead arm. Arm stays straight, wrist doesn't break down and tons of power.
Do I need to actually be hitting a golf ball with this device or can I be practicing my full swing with just a mat in my basement. Also if I need a ball can I use foam ones so I don’t destroy my drywall when I miss the net😂
Most pros actually don't do it that way. They think it destroys "connectivity". Tom Weiskopf did do it that way however. That argument has been going on if golf magazines for 50 years. The concept of a flat wrist however goes back to about 1964 with Jack Nicklaus and Golf Digest's "square-to-square" revelation and subsequent fiasco of people denying it. Nobody does this any better and more noticeable than Lee Trevino and Dustin Johnson. Long swingers like John Daly and Phil do it on the way back down. What you are really doing is taking control of the club about like a baseball home run hitter does with a bat. You are setting up to "center punch" that ball with square impact authority. It is a sport, not a powder puff derby. I would hit the ball so hard on the center of my driver that my left wrist would get sore after awhile. Ouch when you hit it to the outside of center of the driver clubface. This is the level of authority you want to attain. It makes little difference just where you set this up but most pros do it at the top of the swing do to connectivity issues with body turn. Picking it and the beginning of the swing is the swing of a hack. Just wrists OK, but arms and shoulders only go along for the ride. That's connectivity.
Amateur golfers have no idea of the words ulner radial or most pro golfers for that matter - wrists react to the weight of the club and length of the swing - plus how you are gripping the club of course - simple as that - I asked a top top player about his hands - his answer was … no idea - don’t think too much - but some good points here
I understand that the words might be new to you, but learning the correct anatomical terms (4 words) means clearer communication. That’s my goal with the channel, to educate the masses and remove the ambiguity surrounding so much golf instruction. Hope that explains why I do it this way.
Nothing new in golf. This is very similar to the Three Magic Moves method. Square to Square Golf is very similar and easier to use. Sam Goulden teaches Square to Square. I like that better

And now the light is on, hitting balls yesterday I felt frustrated that I didn’t understand what I should do with my hands well enough! Thanks!
Glad the video helped you!
Great video as always.
Q. Is the wrist waggle you make at 1.26 the same feel/movement you achieve through the moment of impact?
This is exactly the instruction I needed at this moment. Many thanks!
Glad it helped!
You are one of the best UA-cam coaches.
Wow, thanks! I appreciate that. 🙏🏻
this is a great video and drill to use. i have a huge problem with my writsts breaking down at the top of the backswing, Thank you!

Nice discussion of wrist angles. It would be interesting to see how some of the top tour players vary or maintain the angles throughout their swing.

Great this. The definitive guide I’ve been looking for on UA-cam. Thanks very much indeed. 🙏
Thanks for watching! Happy to hear the video was so helpful! 👍🏻
Great video! But what’s the feeling or how to or when to get to those wrist conditions from the takeaway instead of setting them as in the drill?
Thanks, very important detail. I need to go to practice this drill.
Glad it was helpful!
This video was exactly what I needed. Thank you!
Great video Rob, will try out for sure!! Thanks!
Thank you!
Yep, I was doing it wrong
Awesome tip- thank you for the visual
Happy the video was helpful! 👍🏻
Love this video and cant wait to try the technique…one question about the grip - would having a strong lead hand grip be detrimental to maintaining a flat lead wrist at the top and through the downswing and/or would a neutral grip be better? cheers
A stronger lead hand grip would require a slightly cupped or extended lead wrist at the top for the face to be “square”
Loved the video and it helped immensely with my irons but not so much with my driver. Can you do a similar video using your driver?
I'll see what I can do , Jerry.
Great video, as always! One question: how to you get from address position (with ~20 degrees wrist extension) to the flat wrist position? Not for the purposes of the drill, but in a typical swing.
I cover that question in this video - ua-cam.com/video/J1Elqj2qhtU/v-deo.htmlsi=1Y4mZxlmv7Yo9Rtp
No, Rob, we have to heavily rotate the forearm to shallow the club!
Jokes aside this is tremendous as a resource for coaches to use. Thank you ❤
Thanks, James! 👍🏻
So happy i found this goldchest - thx Rob look forward to look at all your videos
Welcome to the channel! It’s great to have you here! 👍🏻
Great video. I do have a question on the hands coming through the ball. Do you extend your hands while hitting the ball as I would do hitting a nail with a hammer?
Great video Rob, is the exact same with driver? I tend to find the momentum makes me overextend at the top with driver
Hi, when you're showing the drill, you mention "squeezing the arms". What do you mean by that? Thanks.
I cover that topic in this video - ua-cam.com/video/4ZIitBe8SdI/v-deo.html
My goodness, I'll g ahead and say it. Rob Cheney has given me the absolute secret to great golf. No other UA-cam tutor ever came closer
Thank you!!!
Can definitely work for the driver 👍🏻
This was like magic for me. Thank you so much Rob.
A proper good explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
Should you try to hold the angles that are set during the drill through impact?
Yes, you should.
Congrats on getting back above the 10k subscribers level.
Thank you!
I over hinge and strike phenomenal distances with accurate club face at impact. When I do your drill all is lost and so is my cositancy?I think my over hinge is staying in plane do to my large arm muscles.
Another awesome vlog
Thank you so much 😊
Great video as always
Appreciate that, glad you enjoyed it!
Question Rob…how about incorporating “hands in” into the drill. That would mean the shaft is not parallel to the target line at P2, but conforming more to the grid. Good or bad idea?
It's certainly an option. But "hands in" isn't shaft in at P2. In the model, P2 would have the hands and shaft lined up.
Love this. TLDR: Faldo drill?!
Do you have a video showing how you setup the grid with alignment sticks?
Can you work with the core version without radial/ulner and still be in a good place just knowing flexion/extension numbers and how radial can influence too much extension??
Yes, I would say that’s definitely possible.
Tnanx Rob. Would it be OK or not to place the club in P2, take the proper grip ( flat wrist) , then place the club at P1? If ok, at P2 grip setup is club face straigh or at mt spine angle?
Yes, yo could do this.
Hi Rob, does this drill work with the driver? Whenever I use this drill with the driver, I tend to slice it because of the automatic reaction to hold the wrist "hinge" throughout the swing, resulting in big amount of shaft lean which is not desirable for driver.
Is the hack motion work on lead or trail arm? You've done both.
Great question. It depends on the subscription level you have. The basic level (CORE) and mid-level (PLUS) is lead wrist only. The advanced level (PRO) is both wrists.
can't go wrong with any of your advice
Thanks, Don. This one is relevant to the wrist angle discussion we had about your swing.
Welcome back Sir, where have you been?
I was silenced for a while… but I’m back now! 💪🏻
Excellent lesson.thanks
Best UA-cam instructor bar none!!!
Do I just move trail hand back ( hinge (wrist)away from target at setup and then complete backswing
Definitely trying this today on simulator
Super clip.
Thank you!
Sir
Will surely follow sincerely
Thank you
To make square contact with this drill, are you rolling the forearms at impact? I do this drill and the ball shoots off to the right. And when I think about this while playing, I hit hasel rockets…
Thanks!
Thank you! 🤩
This is totally going to help my chicken wing flying elbow on the back swing. Excited to try this at the range tomorrow. Thank you! Best video I've seen in a long time. Thank you!
Glad it helped! Good luck!
Cheers mr Faldo
Bowed wrist is my most important swing thought
Nice, Steve. That's generally much better than extending or cupping!
Thanks rob A1 as usual.
Super useful!
Glad it was helpful!
How would this work with the driver ? Same thing?
Yes, same thing.
Should not the toe at P2 be at 1:00 o'clock instead of 12:00??
subscribed
Thank you, Kevin!
would love to see the drill with driver
is it the same with the driver?
yes, this can also work for the driver
How do you get to P2 in your actual swing? That’s what I’m struggling with.
This video should help you with that issue… Don’t Make This Backswing Mistake | Master The Takeaway!
ua-cam.com/video/J1Elqj2qhtU/v-deo.html
Ok I will be the first to comment. Great advice as usual, thank you.
Thank you as always! 🙏🏻
I had similar question and just posted on it.
I will try this on the driving range¡ but I noticed wright away that this drill changes my grip
Hope it helps you improve your ball striking!
I like your tuition. I have one observation. You propose keeping your weight on the front foot -then you demo all sorts of grip/whatever -and you are not keeping your weight on the front foot. Why?

The old Faldo drill
@@robcheneygolf1 no the words are not new to me but thanks for the reply
And they have „tennis elbow”…paradoxically😁
good demonstration, but this could have cut down to a 6 minute video
Nothing new in golf. This is very similar to the Three Magic Moves method. Square to Square Golf is very similar and easier to use. Sam Goulden teaches Square to Square. I like that better
Really
You never showed how to get there in a full swing!
Why don't you show how to transition from the drill to a real swing?
