    That shot of Gamera staring down Iris in the rain is a remarkably well shot sequence and as you say shows how suitmation can still have a place in the digital age. It genuinely looks real and its hauntingly beautiful. Everything about that battle in Kyoto is just perfect and man that ending with all the Gyaos converging on Japan? Shit, on the one hand that's fun way to leave the trilogy open-ended and apocalyptic but on the other this series was painfully short and I wish we got one more at least. Revenge of Iris is simply put one of the best Kaiju films ever made and easily tops anything that came out of Godzilla's Heisei era (only Biollante and Destroyah come close to this). I still hope we get this version of Gamera again in the future either with a new Japanese soft reboot or a big Hollywood adaptation (preferably directed by Guillermo Del Toro).

      I really like how this kinda made me think of the first Gamera. I mean honestly I wonder if Toshiro was supposed to be crazy or something. I mean to be fair in the first movie Gamera wasn't evil he just was an animal and needed to eat. 'Gamera is just an animal! He needs to eat' and yet strangely saved a kid.
      I love how this time Gamera seems to save a kid on total accident and the kid is visibly scared after the incident. Makes me think of the scene on the bridge from Godzilla 2014 where the kids are screaming in fear. Sharp contrast to the 'COOL MOM!' kid from the first Bayformers where Prime and Bone Crusher are wrestling on the highway.

    I will say that this movie really was good about giving me different emotions towards Gamera. I mean the first two movies you cheered or felt bad when he got hurt.
    This time you feel horror as he goes wild against the Hyper Gyaos and you wonder if he was always like this, got desperate or because he severed his connection with Asagi?
    Yet there he is at the end waiting for Ayana to wake up so patiently and he even might give her a bit of life to heal like he did to Asagi at the end of Guardian. You're just like 'is this the same creature we saw in Shibuya?'

    A quick appreciation here is I like how in the final battle Gamera reaches into Iris's chest to save Ayana at the cost of his own safety because though its not shown in detail if it was an act of kindness or practicality, he seems to still aspire to be a guardian and protector, despite having to become so destructive to fight the Gyaos, he hears her cries for help to save her from the monster of vengence she created in herself and with no hesitation he rescues her.
    I think its my favorite scene, especially cause of the scene showing his palm gleaming white, cutting against the darkness of Iris, it feels like his still present inner hero shone through and reached out to her.

      Definitely.
      I think a good way to describe it is that it’s the best “Showa” Gamera movie.
      I was won over by the early cuteness, but the movie certainly did not forget the gore either.

      I remember avoiding it for a long time and still haven't seen it. I'm a little triggered that they gave the Gamera's generic dinosaur roars though. If it got a sequel I'm hoping bit by bitToto grows up and matures since I'm not a fan of his look. Zedus looks neat and I welcome him to the gallery.

      Irrelevant402 That’s right! I was also slightly bothered by the generic roar.
      I thought they were saving it for the very end. when Toto is finally called Gamera I thought he would do his roar, but nope!

    Besides being some of the best kaiju films ever I like how especially this film kind of make you question "yeah he appears to be good and helping us but is he that much better when he's knocking down more of the city then they are?"

  • @jkrunch2166
    @jkrunch2166 2 роки тому +1

    I don't know if it's my nostalgia blinders, but this is my all-time favorite kaiju film. The layered story-telling that deals with themes of revenge, mysticism, and the consequences of humanity's arrogance, all while having the confidence to leave some aspects up to interpretation, coupled with, to this day, some of the best monster designs and effects in a kaiju film, complex characters, and gripping pacing, make this a pretty mind-blowing film.

  • @BaldPerspective
    @BaldPerspective 3 роки тому +1

    After Gojira, this is the best kaiju film ever imo. It's mature, introspective, strange, terrifying, emotionally-complex, & gorgeous. The ending is perfect; you couldn't realistically progress in this timeline past this movie the way the films were changing one to the next.

    I want to seriously thank you for making these reviews. They're what finally convinced me to give these movies a shot, and they didn't disappoint. That said, I wish there was a better way to watch them legally than Mill Creek's blu-ray release. This movie in particular was gutted pretty hard in that release, featuring a broken and blatantly unfinished subtitle track. Maybe one day we can hope for a western release that does this movie justice.

    This film was a lovely one to be sure! It has my favorite gamera design by far with a pretty interesting cast of human characters on both spectrums. Although I don’t care fir its larval state p, when it actually starts to grow Iris is a spectacle to behold and has a pretty interesting motivation given its bond to a person.

  • @nexusshark
    @nexusshark 5 років тому +1

    GMK is probably the only other movie that comes close to this one (and it has a very similar feeling to it). Gamera has been completely deconstructed to full anti hero. My only two complaints would be the limited Kaiju action and the open ending, but the human cast actually makes up for it. I think my favourite character is Kurata and his hypnotising eyes. I kinda wish the movie would have explained Iris a little better, what it actually was and why it was created. Regardless, this is easily one of the best and meaningful Kaiju movies I've ever seen. I wish Gamera would've gotten more of these. I give this one 5 stars out of 5.

    I've enjoyed Gamera in the past, and seriously, this movie has game. This was a very well made production, it caught me off guard as I was lazy one evening and just started watching it and was surprised at how dark it was, this wasn't a silly attempt to cash in but an honest attempt...nice move.

  • @ShanaReviews
    @ShanaReviews 5 років тому

    that ending though.
    it leaves you seeing Gamera defeating Iris, but a new threat in droves comes and Gamera is stil weak from his fight, moving forward to face the challenge, even when the odds aren't in his favor.
    It genuinely feels like that scene captures the franchise itself.
    It managed to pull a win, but even that isn't enough to secure Gamera's victory or that he'll be around.

    Since we all like comparing the heisei Godzilla series to the Gamera trilogy, here’s my rankings.
    1. Revenge of iris
    2. Vs biollante
    3. Attack of legion
    4. Guardian of the universe
    5. 1984
    6. Vs destoroyah
    7. Vs king ghidorah
    8. Vs mechagodzilla
    9. Vs mothra
    10. Vs spacegodzilla.
    I prefer the trilogy. The only good heisei Godzilla films (in my subjective opinion) are biollante, 84, and maybe destoroyah.

    The best Gamera film and perhaps one of the best Kaiju film ever made (my opinion).
    One thing I like best about this film is that there's a lot shrouded in mystery and left undefined, biggest being Iris himself. You never really learn what he is, but are given a lot of possibilities: a mutated Gyaos, a safety measure to control Gamera should he ever go rouge, a creature like Gamera created to fight the Gyaos as a last-ditch effort or an attempt to create the Ultimate Lifeform. Either way, each possible truth paints the Atlantians in a disturbing light. Just how far were they will to go in creating life? (I personally like the second option.)
    That's honestly his scariest aspect, in my opinion. You never know what he is, and that's frightening in its own right.

    Your praise of that initial battle reminds of another reason I don't particularly like Gamera 2: in Gamera 2, the military has time to clear a town for the monsters to fight in. My three biggest takeaways from Gamera 3 are the tracking shot when the general decides to attack Gamera first, Gamera shooting fire through his severed arm, and the ending with the multiple Gyaos.

    hope we get another film in this series as i really loved this reboot and definitely feels they went as all out as they could showing great suitmation,awesome 90's anime ova esque feel(that i definitely got when i got introduced to these films by adv's promo's.) with it's beautiful music & ideas.
    and a great story with that shows consequences to gamera's actions with the shibuya attack being the few times i got frightened in a kaiju movie(outside shin godzilla/1954.) with how disturbing it is seeing tons of people die and the city become apocalyptic from the atlantean turtle becoming desperate from his lost connection to humanity making him justifiably viewed as their enemy & spiritual connection(that i really love in these movies and like godzilla's starting to take cues from in gmk & monsterverse/would love this version of gamera to appear.:3) with the embodiment of revenge iris becomes blurring it acting on it's own will/plans,the gyaos or ayana(especially when she's being shown memories by it/floating in it's mind.) .
    was great seeing the older characters return(kinda wish we saw osaka with the main characters more in the finale instead of being nearly arrested.) that became my favorite kaiju humans showing they can be as important as the monsters and ending on a hauntingly ambiguous note that the only clue the creator leaves is if you believe gamera can win against that worldwide gyaos swarm.(which after everything the turtles been through honestly do think he can as despite the collateral and stress from desperation he did pretty well against the others across the world throughout the film/glad it got changed as originally it was going to be it's bleakest with everything destroyed or gone with only gamera left.)

    This wasn't just the end of the Gamera Trilogy, it was also the final Heisei Era Kaiju film; the end of an era that began in 1984. It is the pinnacle of Kaiju Eiga. Gamera 3: Awakening of Irys is what most trilogy closers strive to be, regardless of genre. 5/5
