I cried, I cheered, I was inspired. This was one of the best Gamera movies EVER made. Teaching many valuable lessons. Gamera in the 60s taught me about bullies, seemingly unbeatable enemies, faith, loyalty, sacrifice, collateral damage and loss. EXCELLENT
Not gonna lie: As a pet owner myself, the ending of this film really got to me.
Given how long it's been since this film came out, the final line of "Goodbye Gamera" almost has a meta quality to it that makes it extra melancholic.
I really love when Toru pretends to stroke the full grown Toto’s head from a distance, just like he did to Toto when he was just a little turtle.
I was surprised by how effective it was, good film-making!
Kind of a shame that this movie got major flack when it first released. It obviously won’t top any of the Heisei movies, but it does feel like a good breather movie after how intense Revenge of Iris was. Hopefully, if Gamera does make a comeback, they could find a bridge between the Heisei’s tone and this movie’s idea of building Gamera and the protagonist’s relationship.
I really hope they reboot the franchise and set it in ww2 where the nazis are making monsters and gamera had to stop them. Just for something new
It would be nice if they followed through with the 2016 concept from Comicon. I never saw this but want to.
Imagine something as beastly as heisei's Gamera having loyalty to some humans, that's heartwarming stuff. Like Godzilla The Series
3:00 Gamera sounds SO CUTE!!!
I gotta say, Gamera the Brave is a Showa film with a Heisei tone.
This is probably the closest Gamera has ever gotten to being down right Spielbergian.
Gamera studio asks Toho for Godzilla crossover.
*literally everyone liked that*
Everyone but toho unfortunately.
Greater Grievobeast 55 yeah, I’m planning on a Godzilla movie, and it might include Gamera, if they say no though, I’ll have to replace it with maguma.
@@bradbradthebrad maguma...
Weird choice, but I like it
Toho declined the Godzilla vs Gamera film because it had Gamera as the winner in the film
Toho refused to do it two times
I'm just upset that they had to replace Gamera's iconic roar with a stock Universal dinosaur roar.
Didn't the roar originally originate in The Land Unknown?
@@EverettDudgeon138 Who knows?" But it's been used in a ton of movies, including Jaws 1 and The Revenge, and the 1976 remake of King Kong.
Hewy Toonmore It also has a bit of the roar used in the 1976 King Kong.
@@THANATOS-PRIME Yup. I said that.
@@Hewylewis I felt the same way about heisei king ghidorah
I would describe this movie as the best “Showa” era Gamera movie. It took all the same elements, but made them not terrible.
I was actually completely won over by the “boy and his dog” stuff as well as how connected the kids were to Toto.
This movie balanced its tone perfectly to allow silly things like the kids relay-racing the red gem, and then blocking the adults off from Toto after the Zedus battle to work.
The SFX are pretty good and the fight is decent as well.
As for the roar, they totally missed a perfect opportunity for the iconic roar to return at the very end of the movie when Toru finally calls Toto Gamera.
Still a very solid kaiju film and a fine love letter to Showa era movies from a Heisei film.
Definitely the fourth best Gamera movie!
If it came after 1980, it’s not a Showa film. It doesn’t matter how it was made, only WHEN it was made.
Tyrant Gregcag Where did I say it was a Showa era movie?
I put Showa in quotation marks when describing it as such because I’m acknowledging that it’s not literally made during the Showa era, but the film is obviously heavily influenced by that era of movies and is trying to evoke the same feelings as those films did.
This is also why I said it was a love letter Showa era Gamera movies.
Also, the Showa era ended in the beginning of 1989. Technically speaking this makes Godzilla 1984 a Showa film, but I know we don’t categorize it as such.
With the rise of Kong and Godzilla, I believe the studios behind Gamera would make a new movie and maybe just maybe we'll get Godzilla vs Gamera in the far future.
Man I sure hope so. The Gamera trailer for the unfinished movie looked so freaking jaw dropping.
I really feel like godzilla vs gamera will show up in the monster verse. I hope it will because I've been waiting for that movie for years
Maybe even Legendary can make a Gamera movie.
@@Saltyaf38 Nah, I doubt it. Neither company would want their monster to lose.
@@EverettDudgeon138 well duh
I never really cared for the CGI parts of this movie but overall it's a fun and surprisingly touching Gamera movie. The child actors didn't grate as before, and the kaiju action was quite good.
Grate as before?
@@Saltyaf38 As in 'grate on one's nerves'
I was really, really pleasantly surprised by this movie when I finally got a chance to see it. It's got some real Pixar, Miazaki vibes going for it. Good kaiju stuff too, and some surprisingly violent scenes with Zedus that took me by surprise. I agree, the sound design is a solid knock against it. But it definitely deserves more love. Though, following up a super dark masterwork like Iris and being released alongside the generally more serious Millennium Godzilla movies, I see why the fanbase wasn't ready for it at the time.
0:56 those are some good effects right there! It looks so real and believable that I wish more movies like that can be made. When you have practical effects as good even better than the best CGI effects, that's what you call dedication!
This movie is so fucking good. I can't overstate how enjoyable it was when I saw it for the first time a few months back. It immediately shot up to my top 3. A really heartfelt movie with a lot of moving moments and some of the best effects seen in the genre.
If you like kaiju films, watch Gamera the Brave. You won't regret it.
The quality of the film is a lot higher than I thought it was going to have, I need to give this one a watch. I was thinking it was going to be a flop and too silly but it has depth which I appreciate lol great review :)
After the dark Heisei era it’s kind of refreshing to see a “cutesie” Gamera and a sillier movie.
to cutesie in my opinion, i get making him a little less intimidating than the 90s version or hell even showa era versions but whys he gotta look like the Minilla version of Gamera? i get he's the son and its more family friendly but whys he gotta look so dopey
Up From The Depths
87.4K subscribers BTW.... "Gamera the Brave" was the very first Gamera film I saw growing up. Zedus is definitely my all time favorite Gamera Kaiju main antagonists. What made Zedus truly terrifying to me is that for ONE, he's HUGE!!! SECOND, he's a formidable and dangerous adversary, especially for Gamera Junior/Toto himself to handle. And THIRD, he's one of the few carnivorous and predatory kaiju actually shown literally eating, devouring, and killing innocent human's onscreen... which you can clearly see actual Human blood stained on his jaws (in that one scene), after he ate a whole bunch of people right in front of our main heroes in that one disturbing scene from the film. That alone is proof that Zedus will not hesitate to kill anyone or anything that stands in his way, that shows you just how evil, ruthless, merciless, and sadistic he truly is! Even the climatic final battle between Gamera Junior/Toto and Zedus is truly breathtaking, intense, and memorable in my own opinion. I have always love that bit where Gamera Junior brutally and literally rips off the evil Zedus's own tongue and then blew him to kingdom come in a greatly satisfying way.
5:33: Yeah. If anything, it sounds more like King Kong (1976), which was portrayed with elephant bellows, I'm pretty sure.
Easily my favorite Gamera movie - and in my opinion, the best. I love the Heisei films, but this movie didnt reject the original Gamera films, it embraced them and updated the franchise in a way the Heisei movies weren't confident enough to do. It balances the Heisei and Showa elements perfectly. This film also always manages to make me cry, something I can't say about the previous three - and something even the Godzilla films haven’t achieved.
My god is this movie underrated. It's actually one of (if not only) Kaiju film you can even watch with your family. The feels are real in this film and although the Kaiju action is a little lack luster, the human characters, including the kids, are actually interesting. You can see that this movie was done with real care. This is how the Showa Gamera films WISH they could be. Zedus isn't much to speak of sadly and I do miss Gamera's iconic roar, but other than that I love this film. This is not just a good Kaiju movie, it's a good movie, period. I give this one 5 out of 5 stars. Too bad this movie never got a follow up.
I do like that it looks like the movie starts off with a Gamera fighting a bunch of Gyaos. Kind of a nice way to give some people a visual sense of closure. No it doesn't fit the timeline perfectly but again it's visual.
But yeah not giving the Gameras the roar is damn stupid but I kind of want to see the movie now since it sounds like it isn't like the old Gameras, minus Barugon of course.
Someday, when the time is right, he shall return
He is The Guardian of The Universe
He is The Friend To All Children
He is Giant
He is Super
He is Brave
He Is Gamera
I love the ending when Toru says, “Goodbye Gamera”. He only called his turtle “Toto” until then.
Fun fact about Zedus, he was an ordinary lizard mutated after feeding on Gyaos remains. On top of that, the novels include more features to him, such as:
* His spear tongue had more spears to impale people.
* Literally growing wings out of nowhere.
* The ability to effectively coerce anything with Gyaos cells to follow his lead
* Each of his body parts are able to even when separated from him.
* More importantly, Zedus would've kept evolving if Toto hadn't stopped him.
As my personal headcanon, I shall nickname this movie *"Son of Gamera"* .
I love your reviews, you got me into watching Gamera films and I really enjoyed it.
Having just watched the entire Gamera series for the first time, The Brave may just be my favorite flick. It's a very tough call, but that movie has so much incredible heart and handles its themes incredibly well.
This instantly became one of my favorite movies of all time.
3:00 hahahaha! This is cute! I love the part where toto the baby sulcata tortise tumbles down by the stairs and the cat meows and walks away
Completely agree. I had heard it wasn't very good, but when I saw it I was delightfully surprised by the great direction and storytelling. The cute elements really work, and there's definitely a sophisticated sensibility to the film despite it's aim at a younger audience.
I liked this movie ..! And Gamera looked SO Cute ! Lol

@@backdrop8469 he was talking about the movie; not the villian
@@Saltyaf38 And so was I. The Revenge Of Iris is dodgy af. Especially when the school girl gets covered in goo and fondled by tentacles. Gamera 3 is weirder.
I've been actively skipping this for a while since the Hesei Gamera films are to me at least the quintessential version of the character. Your review though makes me think it might be worth giving it shot. Different for sure but worthwhile.
If you can get over the tonal differences, Brave offers a different kind of, but equal, quality. It's really worth a shot.
It’s definitely the fourth best Gamera movie after the Heisei trilogy.
I can only echo the review in that it takes all the elements from the Showa era (including the violence and gore) and elevates the sillier elements into a cute kids adventure that works.
While the tone is way lighter than the Heisei trilogy, it still has it’s moments like Zedus bloodily eating several humans in front of the kids in the film.
This feels like a showa gamera movie but without a lot of the flaws that held most of those movies back.
Although LEGION is the best Gamera movie, GAMERA THE BRAVE is my personal favorite of the giant turtle series and I'm so glad you enjoyed it as well.
I think legion is the worst of the trilogy
Also God damn you Toho for turning down a Gamera vs Godzilla film! lol I've been waiting for that matchup since I was 5!
Wesley Dugle They were probably too busy helping Kim Jong-Il make propaganda films.
Gamera is super cute but I can't get over the lack of his iconic roar
He still has a little bit of it. But still is lacking in it. I noticed that the roars have a little but of it in the background of the roar
Unusual Gamera film, but I really enjoyed this one. Fingers crossed, the next time we see Gamera is in a Monsterverse film!
Gamera is pretty easy to buy you know.
It's been 15 years since this movie and still no sign of a new Gamera movie.
I absolutely love the heisei gamera movies, but Gamera The Brave is so wholesome to me, it is a movie with a lot of heart, it makes me feel like a kid again, You care for the characters, You can relate to Toru and how he struggles with loss, it's a very human thing, we all have felt those types of feelings before i like his relationship with his dad, mai but specially Toto, and that scene with the kids it's great and charming, aside from that.... the introduction to this movie is one of my favorite movie introductions ever, and the music by Yoko Ueno is simply fantastic, She's such a great musician. Overall it's a great film really recommend it. FOR TOTO !!!
This is basically the E.T. of Kaiju cinema.
The last major kaiju movie to use suitmation
13 years since that movie.
Now, it's motion-capture, which is basically the spiritual descendant of suitmation.
And what a terrible shame it is. I still feel like there is a place for some hybrid of mocap and suits, but alas.
SmedZeppelin Still, CGI can achieve things suitmation or animatronics struggle to do: Make the monsters emote and make them look way bigger than they are
@@orcawithdrip827 my issue is that CGI will always look like CGI, and that good practical effects have a definite physical presence that, when savvy, you can feel a lot more than CGI. It's why I think a combo would work best.
SmedZeppelin Shin Godzilla: *AM I A JOKE TO YOU?*
My lil sister and I loved the older movies of gamera , we both would cry any time he got hurt .
Weird as it is, I like to just play fast-and-loose with the timeline and think of this as the Gamera 4 we never got. Tones not all that different from Guardian of the Universe and it makes for a nice cycle where the grizzled and gritty Gamera sacrificed itself for humanity, but now got a new lease on life via it's reincarnation/son. In a way, this movie is the Showa formula done maturely and with better effects. Kid characters aren't suffering from the infamous Kenny/Kendra syndrome, adults act realistically, and the monster fights aren't terrifying like in G3, but aren't lacking in teeth.
The big weakness here is Gamera is a tortoise in some scenes and a turtle in others. Did they not know the difference?
In Japanese and other languages like arabic
They use the same word for turtle and tortoise
I love a sulcata tortoise was used as a baby Gamera. This movie was so good. Gamera was one of my favorites growing up. I'm talking the 1970s!
Honestly, I actually like this movie embracing the classic, more kid-friendly tone primarily because while the Heisei Gamera Trilogy was fantastic (and my introduction to the character), having a dark and serious kaiju film does make the movie feel just like the current (both at the time and now) Godzilla movies. And while the Heisei Gamera movies were arguably even better than some of the Heisei Godzilla movies, they're still tonally very similar. Making Godzilla more serious but Gamera more kid-friendly would be a nice way to differentiate the two franchises.
Gamera can still be serious and still be able to be differentiated from godzilla, it's not the tones that need to be different, it's the characters themselves. Godzilla is serious but neutral, he's either a villain or an anti hero. Gamera can be serious but goes out of his way to help humans wherever he can, that same personality can be seen in mothra and kong. Both of which can and have serve as opposites to godzilla in a way
this is like a movie that i want to show my little sister, but then i remember certain scenes and im like, noooooooo... lol
They should have made another movie in ‘15.
This was one of the first gamera movies I saw, I gotta say the movie is overall good but I had my issues with it. While this take on gamera is probably the one that earned its title as friend to all children the most and the child actors are pretty amazing, I do think a few of the human scenes could have been cut of kept up as the movie felt really slow despite the scenes themselves being good. Gamera design is just a might too cute for me but considering no this one is I can bare it. While being relatively generic I actually REALLY like zedus. He doesn’t let the lack of origin or incredibly powerful abilities stop him from gourging on people but the dozens and just comes of as a relentless nasty brawling bastard. I probably would have liked this film more if they made a continuation of it but I doubt that will be happening.
Love your reviews man!👍
I thought this was a very good movie. Very well done, good graphics, good acting, good dubbing (I prefer Japanese language with subtitles but that wasn't available). Because it was kid-geared we didn't really have any "Gamera Girls" but that's okay considering. Well done!
Not gonna lie, I'm not a huge fan of this film. I didn't like how they brought Gamera back to his kid movie roots for this one, and while the special effects were solid, the kaiju themselves were underwhelming compared to what has come before in past films. Toto was a poor successor to Gamera himself, it was like if Minya had been made the star of a Godzilla movie, and the loss of his iconic roar really hurt, especially since they replaced it with the same stock roar utilized for the Shark in Jaws 4: The Revenge XD. Did the company lose the rights to Gamera's old roar or did they think the stock roar was an improvement or something? As for the new monster Zhedus, despite being a very well made monster, he ultimately comes off as very forgettable due to his lack of flashy or bizarre special moves that Gamera villains are known for (the spear tongue was alright, but nothing special compared to a freeze gas tongue or rainbow death ray etc). Speaking of which, Zhedus did kind of remind me of Barugon, but less impressive or memorable despite being realized through far better effects, & ultimately losing to a baby turtle monster. I think Toto should have reached adulthood by the end of the movie and become a proper Gamera, and that Zhedus needed some more interesting abilities at the very least to make him stand out from the rest of Gamera's rogues gallery...Though I will admit I liked it whenever they had him climbing atop bridges or up the sides of buildings, those were nice effects, and that the film didn't shy away from civilian casualties (its still a kid's film, but its no Disney movie as it were).

I wonder what films Up From The Depths will tackle now? Rodan? Mothra? War of the Gargantua's? And dare I say...King Kong Escapes?
I actually hope this channel explores more non-Japanese kaiju films.
@@noblegas7073 He already covered the first two. As for the others, who knows?
I haven't seen this yet but what really stood out to me in this video was how good the practical effects are... for the most part. Gamera/Toto looks amazing. Both the suit and animatronics look realistic. It really makes me wish we could see another suitmation Kaiju film with the further developments made in materials and robotics to bring them to life. Mix with a little bit of modern CGI and it would look amazing.
I say for the most part only because the evil Kaiju doesn't look anywhere near as good but it's mostly the spines on it's back that let it own.
ガメラかわいい❗ガメラ優しい😊
My favorite scene will always be Avant Gamera's last stand on the mountains against the Gyaos
I grew up with Gamera. I never watched this one because the Gamera monster looked so different. Kind of forgot about it over the years. Maybe I'll look it up and watch it.
I really hope that Legendary and Warner Bros would bring Gamera into the Monsterverse.
Through Easter Eggs, it is implied that Gamera and his foes exist in the Pacific Rim universe.

Do they own the rights to Gamera now or something? I think he'd make a pretty cool ally to Godzilla in the monsterverse.

Funny enough, I just got Gamera The Brave on DVD in the mail today. There was honestly a lot of potential for the trilogy they had planned , but we obviously never got that due to the poor ticket sales when the film hit theatres. Just update the look of Gamera with each film like the prior trilogy did, (and for Christ sake) bring back his signature roar, and boom: We could've had a trilogy that could've been up there next to the Kaneko's trilogy.
[As for Zedus's origin, according to Wikizilla, an official Heisei Gamera book explained he was an aquatic lizard mutated by feeding on the corpses of Gyaos. This would've probably been explained in one of the sequels had it actually happened.]
Here's to hoping for another well-done Gamera movie someday.
Ah, yes. Gamera is awesome!
In my opinion this movie has the best practical effects in any monster monster
Personally, I think this film is as good as the Heisei films in its own way. And it's a shame it seems to be almost less than an afterthought when discussing the franchise as a whole. Some fans are put off by Gamera's cute make-over, but the film is surprisingly nuanced in its themes and execution. Yes, it's more aimed at children, but not in a pandering and silly way. The films pure-hearted storytelling is really winning and emotionally satisfying. All of the kids just instinctively knowing to get the red stone to Gamera and passing it around the city is perfect.
This film really takes the "Gamera is a friend to children" thing to the next level.
I would have liked more lore behind Gamera and Zedus and Gamera's missing roar is just such an odd choice, but these are minor issues in the grand scheme of things.
Was this movie ever released officially in the US region 1?
Yes. Both on DVD and Blu-Ray by Media Blasters/Tokyo Shock.
It's even dubbed.
I haven't been able to find a copy.
@@mos6507 Amazon has it back in stock. It's a bit expensive though.
I was very lucky to purchase a Blu-Ray copy in store some time before it went OOP for many years.
I don't know why they replaced gamera's Iconic roar with the Universal Dinosaur roars, that's messed up.
I hate this movie so much
The things that i hate in this movie
is when gamera got stuck in the building and just stayed there why didn't he just fly "bUt GaMeRa WaSn'T aBlE tO fLy uNtIl He AtE tHe ReD sToNe" but when toto was a newborn he was able to fly so why he didn't do it or just moved or somethin'
And also the gamera design just don't give you the vibe of this thing is gamera and the canines are very small and the face is very flat especially the first scene where gamera fought the group of gyaoses his face very flat and what is wrong with gyaoses nose
And also i hate when they changed the infamous gamera roar into the universal stock roars and i hate it
And i feel like that they nerfed gamera a little
I give it three stars
Just for the balance between the human stories and the monsters
And for the kennies not being annoying so much unlike the showa gamera movies
And for the cool design for the villain
I do not agree..
This turd ill movie is the worst that ever was made.
They made him look like Yertle the turtle.
They replaced his iconic roar with Spot's from the Munsters.
The majority of the film flip flopped from grim to goofy.
The whole children rescuing the monster is straight out of E.T..
I can't see why Universal Pictures doesn't sue the clowns who made this mess..
3 thumbs down and a kick to the curb side with it.
Some brevity after the 90s series isn't bad. Gamera as a mature kids movie series would have felt just right, but alas.
I kinda agreed I long ago made up in my head this idea of a franchise based around the consept of guardian monsters introduced in Giany Monsters all out attack or this time they'er a group of anicent beasts based on the 4 cardinal direction guardians of Chiniese mythology with the orignal 4 being created by the Adlantians with Gamera being the black turtles being the last liveing member of the orignal 4. The other 3's power being pased on to other famous Kaiju (start of this series you'd have Mothra, Rodan, and Baragon) with Godzilla starting out as a bad guy/anti hero only for the guardian monsters of earth to fall battleing King Gidorha and Rodan entrusting the future of earth and his power to Godzilla! Gamera I think should follow a similar plot point to his film with his son takeing his place as the more peacful guardian vs the more explosive force of nature godzilla is! As for the other 2 Mothra would be sucessed by her son Leo who would instead of just being another Mothra larva starts out as a Battra larva the fate of all male mothra's in this canon is to become an evil monster but inspired by his mother's sacrifice and later on a quest to recue his baby sister with Gamera's help from Megaguirus he'd insted defy fate to become a true Mothra and prove himself worthy of his mother's powers. As for the last new gaurdian it be Angirus. The 3 guys godzila, Mothra Leo, and Gamera would each get their own movies but constantly show up in other though the focus isnt on them along with the fact that each monster's film would be tonaly difrent. How would I end such a series?
Simple by continueing the cycle of inheritance started in the first film with a remake of Godzilla vs Destroyah only this time instead of Godzilla Jr dieing then resurected after the fight he'd see his father die would be filled with rage tword Destroyah inherit his father's power and become the new king of the monsters! The dynamic difrence between the 2 godzillas in this canon is the 1st one is more an anti-hero/force of nature like he is in Hesei, Mellinum, and Monsterverse series while Jr would be more in line with the friendly heroic one from the later half of the showa era. The Godzilla series would focused on forgiveness, Mothra Leo redemption and Gamera bravery and all 3 from the perspective of Godzilla jr the theme of growing up.
I wonder if we could get a video on that "Gamera 2016 trailer" that went around considering its production value is very good
I love this film it deserves more praise
I think the one thing the Gamera series lacked is returning monsters. Both friends and foes. Other than Gyaos, no other monsters really make a second appearance. One of my biggest dreams would be to make a modern Gamera film and I came up with a script that features Gamera, Gyaos, Barugon and Virus. Just wish I could get it over to somebody at Daiei.
Gamera used these stock roars, King Kong used these stock roars, when Godzilla will use this stock roars?
Godzilla producers know how to use the monster's roar.
By the way, someone uploaded this film to UA-cam, but with Gamera's original roar put back in. It's... Kind of jarring to hear that high screech coming from such a lovable design, but who cares? Go watch it!
What? Stock roars? Not even Gamera's roar is used? Damn... even Godzilla 1998 had Godzilla's roar.
Ive seen Gamera the brave, it's definitely a step down from the heisei gamera trilogy, but still passable. Also alot of people think that this gamera movie is part of the Millennium era of kaiju movies due to the fact that it came out 2 yrs after final wars and is not set in the heisei universe. Though that was debunked as gamera the brave is actually a heisei gamera movie not set in the trilogy, the Millennium era only applies to the Godzilla movies.
This movie is quite good. It's a lot better than you would expect on the surface. This is a children's movie, with an adorable, cartoony re-imagining of one of the darkest kaiju. One might expect it to be insufferable and trite and annoying, but it isn't at all. Rather, this movie is disliked not because of its inherent quality, but because it is a sharp contrast to the films preceding it, which were always going to be an impossible act to follow. This does something completely different and doesn't try to be those films, which I think was an inspired decision, because it might be doing its own thing, but it's doing its own thing extremely well.
does Toto miss the rains down in Africa?
Love this one
Love your videos. Could you do the Daimajin trilogy when you've finished with Gamera?
I've never managed to see this one, as the blu-ray is pretty tough to get a hold of.
Okay, so just like for your Godzilla reviews, I looked into your overall ratings of the Gamera series.
You gave the Showa series of films a total of *21 Stars* with the average star rating being *2.625 Stars*
For the Gamera trilogy, you gave a total of *14 Stars* with the average being *4.6 Stars*
You gave Gamera the the Brave *4 Stars*
In total, you gave the Gamera series *39 Stars* with the average being *3.25 Stars*
this is a negligibly smaller average when compared to the *3.29* average you gave the Godzilla series (Kotm's isn't in that average yet, but it won't make much of a difference).

This was a very, very good Gamera flick. It was sadly overshadowed by the 90's trilogy. If there's one more reboot I'd like to see, it would be another Gamera film.
My favorite Millennium Series Gamera movie 😎👍🏻!
Too soon? 🙄😬
I’m going to be that guy. There are no millennium Gamera movies. Gamera the Brave is the fourth Heisei Gamera film.
Millennium is really only used for Godzilla since he had 2 distinct series in the Heisei era.
Although if we want to be really technical then Godzilla (1984) is a Showa era movie and Shin Godzilla along with the anime trilogy are Heisei films too and now I’ve gone cross-eyed.
Noble Gas The Showa era was every film from the 1950s to 1980. The Heisei era spanned from 1984-1999. The Millennium era was every kaiju film from 2000 and onward. So, yes, Gamera has a Millennium film.
Tyrant Gregcag The eras are based off what Emperor is seated in Japan.
The Showa era lasted from 1926-1989, Heisei from 1989-2019, and Reiwa is 2019-present.
Obviously the fans don’t strictly follow these as we’re just assigning names to eras of movies.
However, Gamera the Brave is basically just a stand-alone film. There were no direct sequels, or any other Gamera movies that followed within it’s timeframe.
The reason why we can say that Godzilla has a millennium series is because Godzilla had 2 distinct series of films made in the same era that needed to be differentiated from one another.
A single release is not a series, or era. Even when you look up the Gamera series you will find that people put Brave under the Heisei moniker.
I feel like if we follow the original Gamera story from the heisei films, with Gyaos and everything that Zedus was a creation by the Atlanteans and then it went wrong and then they created Gyaos which killed all but one Zedus, which then the Gyaos started killing everyone so they created Gamera and so on.
The scene with the kids running the relay to bring the glowing rock to Gamera was corny as hell, but dammit, it worked on me.
I'm kind of surprised that they haven't made a new Gamera movie since this one came out. Giant monsters are always popular, but apparently Gamera The Brave flopped at the box office and that gave the studio cold feet.
Zedus is the Latest “Barugon”
Havent watched this one yet. At the time it came out, the cute Gamera made me lose interest. Gonna look for it though. Btw... are you going to review the short film/trailer that was released at a comic con (I think)?
I really like the look of Zedus.
As someone who always felt the goofier aspects of Kaiju movies were a big part of their charm, I actually like Gamera The Brave a bit more then the Heisei Trilogy. Those are wonderfully done movies, but IMHO, like many 21st century Kaiju films, they try way to hard to be dark, gritty and serious, and lose some of the fun and whimsy of a good old men in rubber suits monster movie. Gamera The Brave dials that back just enough, while maintaining the quality of special effects and good acting of the Heisei movies. A solid win in my book.
The movie functions as a sequel of sorts to the Daiei films, with the opening sequence taking place in 1973 -- two year after Gamera vs. Zigra was released -- with an older (the original?) Gamera sacrificing himself to save the Japan, before moving to the present day and introducing Gamera's son, Toto. But it's also something of a soft remake, with Toru replaying Toshio's story of a young boy, grieving for his dead mother becoming overly attached to his pet turtle and then Gamera. Toru even endangers himself in his efforts to "help" Gamera.
But Gamera The Brave deals with this subplot in a much more sophisticated way, and yes, with much better acting, showing Toru's father also dealing with his loss (and I thought that having him had born witness to the older Gamera's sacrifice as a young boy was a nice touch) and both father and son having to learn to let go and accept. The ending really gets to me, every time.
The only real complaint I have with this film is Toto's roar. It just... it's too generic for such a unique and iconic monster. They should have used Gamera's traditional roar instead of this generic monster roar.
My favourite Gamera film.
Zedus looks a lot like the monster in the Denmark giant monster film Reptilicus.
Is there even an official way to watch this movie? I’ve, unfortunately, only watched it on UA-cam.
Kissasian has pretty much every kaiju film on there

Toto is not the son of gamera he is the reincarnation of Gamera
He's not the son of gamera or a reincarnation, the movie leaves his origins ambiguous

Just asking, you gonna review that Gamera short film that we saw a couple years back?
Nah
It's a good children's film and a decent follow up. But the last trilogy was perfect as is.
