    Why does Bosch have such small inlet holes?!? I mean Bosch is the winner here just given the sheer numbers and the filter media, but why ruin all that with such small inlet holes? Anyone know the benefit of small inlet holes and why they designed them that way?!? Like why risk depriving engine of good oil flow with those small size inlet holes?

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  Рік тому +1

      I'm not very good at math, but I was told the inlet holes added together will not be smaller than the outlet hole on any oil filter. Like I said I don't know how to measure the circles and figure that all out, but I prefer bigger inlet holes also. I'll pin your comment and see if someone can explain it better.

    • @XerxesTheGreatOne
      @XerxesTheGreatOne Рік тому

      @@WhipCityWrencher Thank you very much good sir. You see the math is a little more than just the sum of the area of all inlet holes being slightly larger than that of the outlet hole. It is also about building pressure BEHIND the filter to force the oil through the filter media. More surface area means more resistance to oil flow. Meaning if you have more of a surface area for the filter media, which is what we have here in case of Bosch filter, you will need a higher INITIAL pressure to push the oil through the filter media before it even reaches the outlet hole, because more media poses more resistance. So you would want larger holes to accommodate more immediate pressure against the filter media to allow for that higher initial pressure. Otherwise, you would ultimately have a bit of hesitation in flow of oil, specially at engine start up. This can easily be remedied with larger inlet holes. I really don't understand what Bosch did here with more media and smaller holes. Those two properties don't go together. More filter media should mean larger inlet holes regardless of the size of outlet hole.

      Denso & the discontinued Honda A-01 filters has round holes too. The holes on Bosch look really tiny too. Nothing scientific here, just making a statement of what I see.

      @@XerxesTheGreatOne Bosch has amazing engineers, and I think the opposite is true; smaller holes will help build that initial flow better than larger holes for that. It's pretty basic actually, if you use your thumb to restrict part of the opening of a hose, it comes out under higher pressure, if you use a bigger hose, the water would come out at less pressure.

      Great point. If you buy individually on RA both these filters significantly more because of shipping costs. Normally have to buy lots of at least 6 to get any kind of value. I don't go through filters that fast. If you try to buy them elsewhere, get a better idea readily available individual price. My.02

      NO !! They both can't be equally "great" -- too many differences for them to be called "the same".
      One of them is clearly much "better" than the other -- and each one of us has to DECIDE which oil filter meets OUR OWN INDIVIDUAL requirements, and buy accordingly.
      RockAuto has the best parts prices -- they ship by FEDX -- it's good, but relatively expensive.

  • @mikebennett703
    @mikebennett703 3 роки тому +14

    The quality and performance for both filters is great. However, because the bosch filter has more media, it has more capacity. The only difference is maybe having to change the wix sooner. If you change oil at 3K then the capacity difference is irrelevant. it really comes down to price. The bosch looks like it will last for a longer drain interval beyond 3K. Otherwise, both are excellent choices..The best part of these filters was the comparison lol! Great job!👍👍

    • @faxmen09
      @faxmen09 3 роки тому +3

      Nah. In a well maintained vehicle, never come close to either filter's "holding capacity". Either will work fine for ~7500 miles 1 year. And ~5k miles, easy for both.

    • @mikebennett703
      @mikebennett703 3 роки тому

      @@faxmen09 Oil filters over time and mileage deteriorate and lose their effectiveness. Hot, high pressure oil constantly passing through the media eventually increses the porosity allowing larger particles through as the dirt / contaminates build up. So even if the actual "capacity" limit is not reached through good maintenence, oil filters should be changed regularly. Thats one of the reasons Whip's filter comparisons are so awesome. He shows the actual thickness of the media and allows the veiwer to get a good idea how clean their engine will be kept with a given oil filter....

Wix beta (on Wix site) translates to 95%%20 microns, BP box rated 99%@20microns. Depending on price I'd use either with no problem. Also I don't get in a twist because of louver use. As long as open they work great. Want to test, remove media and put a light source down tube. See all the openings. Great job, and thanks for the media measurements --
    The Bosch media is 27 % longer (stretched out).
    The Bosch media is 35% wider (end-to-end) .
    The Bosch media is 74 % larger (total sq. ins.)
    Due to it's much larger overall size, the Bosch filter can hold a lot more dirt before clogging.
    The coil spring looks "nice" -- but it really covers up for the fact that the Wix media is much smaller, and will most likely clog before the Bosch reaches it's dirt-holding capacity.
    The narrower Bosch gasket can withstand more pressure before leaking.
    That stamped spring that gets all the criticism is the real hero, as it allows for greater filter capacity.
    The Wix uses the Inlet-End By-Pass valve (a la Motorcraft FL820-S), which is definitely the preffered valve location.
    For me, the ideal oil filter would be the Bosch with the addition of an Inlet-End By-Pass valve.
    The famous 95 MERC runs Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, 5W-20; Bosch Premium Oil Filter # 3410; and a FILTERMAG #SS365PR.

    YES. "Gasket Retainers" -- definitely NOT "O-Ring Retainers" -- these are oil filter GASKETS, and are NOT shaped like O-Rings. They should be referred to as "GASKETS".
    The measured thickness of the gasket is not important, so a "thicker" gasket is not "better" -- what MATTERS is the amount that the Gasket sticks up above the edge of the Cannister.
    In this instance, the thicker gasket is a waste of rubber, because it's much thicker than it needs to be.
    At first glance, the thicker gasket seems to be the right choice -- but, all things considered, it's a WRONG choice for our rapidly-deteriorating environment.
    What gets overlooked is the excellent performance of the Bosch FILTECH's glass-filled filter media, which is often incorrectly called "paper" or "cellulose".

      @@WhipCityWrencher NO. The "info" calls it a "Gasket O-Ring", but a PICTURE of the inlet end of the ACDelco filter shows that the gasket is NOT an O-Ring, but a square-cut gasket with a flat sealing edge.
      There is a technical definition for "O-Ring" -- and the gasket that is used on almost all spin-on oil filters DOES NOT fit the definition.
      An O-Ring has a CIRCULAR cross-section -- these oil filter gaskets have FLAT sealing surfaces -- If there is NO circular cross-section, it's NOT an O-Ring.
      I noticed that the "Hecho en Mexico" WIX filter has the obsolete Coil Spring -- but it has the coveted Inlet-End By-Pass Valve.
      I'm wondering who holds the patent on that Inlet-End By-Pass Valve !??
