Nope, not a bit. Once upon a many moons ago I was a Music Therapy major, before shoulder and wrist injuries meant I couldn't play bass anymore. The textbook definition of music therapy is the use of music to achieve non musical goals. The practical definition is that music just hits us differently and interacts with our brains and our entire bodies differently than other forms of input.
So no, having a seemingly random emotional reaction to outstanding music is very much not weird at all.
Thank you so much for the comment Beth 🙏🏼 This makes so much sense! I expected it to be impressed with his performance but I wasn’t expecting my heart to grow 3 sizes 😆 He started singing and I just had the overwhelming feeling of beauty.
I’m sorry to hear that your injuries pulled you out of bass playing. Are you able to play any instruments these days?
@@MetalGuyReacts I occasionally still pretend to play guitar, and I have played with a few bell choirs still over the years. I briefly played bass with a church group a few years back and playing at a less intense level than college/semiprofessional wasn't too bad but I can't do it long term without steroid injections and/or surgery becoming necessary.

I said that EXACT same thing when he asked that! LOL I was once a minister of music, and went to college for a music therapy major. I was a coloratura soprano, and my upper range was destroyed by a surgery to my spine (they went through my neck) that accidentally cut my super laryngeal nerve that controls higher pitches in the voice. I have been mourning this loss for a while now. I now have the range of Diana Krall, who don't get me wrong, is amazing, but it's not MY voice and I can't do all the vocal acrobatics anymore. I ache to sing my own music again, but I content myself with listening to amazing people online these days. I too have this visceral reaction to Geoff's voice, well, all of VoicePlay really, not just Geoff, just him especially, and this piece of music as well as their Valhalla Calling cover.
When Gimli blows the Horn of Helm Hammerhand during the battle of Helm's Deep, its almost as low as Geoff goes on that first 'Gold'
Visceral is the right word for sure. You don't listen to Geoff as much as you FEEL Geoff. Not only does he really understand how to arrange for himself (and VP) but also how to do those layers, like you said. It can get 'muddy' sounding (at least that's the way I describe it) and that has never happened with Geoff. He is so talented, although I know it has also been a lot of years of working on his craft, but still....he really is a joy to listen to. Glad you enjoyed this one. His Blackbird and House of the Rising Sun covers are always fantastic and worth a listen.

Yeah. Geoff's music tends to hit you this way, and this song more than most. Visceral is the right word for it.
You're really not going to go wrong with any of his stuff, but I think his cover of Blackbird is truly sublime, and his most recent release, House of the Rising Sun, nearly as powerful and affecting as this song.

It's, uh, really super good, but I feel like it needs to come with a warning label. Since Misty Mountains Cold impacted you so hard, I figured you might want to know going in that Hoist the Colours is going to be another one that hits you like a freight train. Brace yourself, and just be aware that other reactors have flung off their headphones and walked out, without a word, due to that song's intensity. It's something else; possibly their best work to date. So, there's your warning. Proceed with care.

Hearing the deep humming in the beginning instantly took me back to first seeing the Hobbit. I swear the hair on my arms was standing straight up. Such a thrilling feeling and memory.
The song itself is from Lord of the Rings, it's the sad song sung by the dwarves, driven from their ancestral mountain home generations before and desperate to find it again. A song that tells of a never ending quest to find the home that was once theirs. The melody and tempo tells of sadness and gets to most people.
Geoff does a great arrangement of it and I love the theatrics in all his productions, not just a singer, but a performer who goes into character with whatever song he sings.
Well there should be a warning on this song with Geoff, as it have killed more reactors to this day. 😂

I would suggest Blackbird, but perhaps you need a little break first. So try one of his fun ones, maybe Bare Necessities or Saddle Up.

Geoff's telling more about dwarves life under the misty mountain than the movie dwarves did. I also enjoyed metal guys reaction as he was not blurbing about details (like some other reactors and reactresses did) and just enjoyed a somehow magic song.

Beyond the power of his voice, this song is one of tragedy and loss. Combine the two and having an emotional reaction is reasonable, if not expected.
Certain voices make me want to cry too. It can be a happy song but just for some reason their voices affect me that way. So I think it’s completely normal that was your first reaction and very cool that you shared that!
This song is one of his best, but Blackbird is killer too. Not as much bass in it, but he really shows off his range.
I get what you mean but he did hit one of his lowest chest+sub notes in this song which is G1 and D1

Geoff's music just does that sometimes. He has a beautiful voice and when he multiplies it to harmonize with himself he creates a perfection of sound that just makes the eyes leak.
So nice to see someone so open to the emotions music can inspire. Geoff is totally unique, and has several truly impressive solos out there: Sixteen Tons, Blackbird, House of the Rising Sun, High and Dry and more.
I absolutely love your response to the first 25 seconds. I always think of it as checking your dental filings before the song. I would love to see someone put this into one of those big subwoofer filled cars just to see how far out the vibrations would go.
I’m hoping you will react to VoicePlay’s cover of “Hoist the colours high” (from Pirates of the Caribbean)! I believe they will release it this weekend. You will be introduced to their newest member, Cesar de la Rosa (I don’t think you’ve seen him yet?) and it’s also featuring Jose Rosario Jr, who you saw in “My mother told me“. And I think it’s really great!!
This song hits me in the feels too. It transports me right back to 3rd grade when I read The Hobbit for the first time, which was my first ever introduction to fantasy literature. I'll be 30 soon, and the decision to dive into The Hobbit at that age put me on the path to becoming the person I am today. So for me it's a combination of Geoff's incredible vocals, and such wonderful attention to detail and respect for something that is so important to me.
Geoff really is something special. There are very few vocalists that can reach as low as he can from what I have see and every time I hear him sing my mood just changes for the better. Pretty much any song either from voiceplay or Geoff’s solo music covers is spectacular any I always enjoy seeing other peoples reactions to this group and it’s member. One song I would like to recommend is Geoff’s new cover of House of The Rising Sun which has become one of my favorites from him.

Agree with you there bud. Something about this song and him singing it that gets me. I think theres both a sense of sorrow that he conveys and also a fierce determination and a purpose - we must away, we ride before the break of day. It feels grounding and inspiring to hear those words sung by Geoff so beautifully
I sincerely love your reaction and have to admit, every time i hear this song (and other songs of Geoff) i'm close to cry and my emotions are more or less out of control. Certainly one of the great things music is able to achieve - to get straight to your heart, soul and your tear glands ;)

It's so much fun to see another reactor start the tumble down the VoicePlay/Geoff rabbit hole! We've all done it. My first was 'Sixteen Tons' which I remembered from childhood, and then 'Ooogie Boogie's Song', and I was hooked.
You seriously cannot go wrong with anything Geoff puts out on his solo channel, but I'll add my 2 cents. If you want an illustration of his full range, go with 'High and Dry'. I went back and listened to Radiohead's original after to get a bearing on what tweaks he made to the arrangement for his voice; he makes the song so much more relatable. I never liked the original version so I avoided his cover for a little while. His version made me like and understand the message that the original production lacked. He is very talented, true, but he works about 16 hours a day at his craft and has been actively singing for his entire adult life. Sorry so long, we get excited when we see another victim of his start to get sucked in! 🤣🤣 Seriously, you can pick any song of his with a blindfold on and a pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey pin and you will get happy ears! Enjoy!
P.S. He also does a few videos where he goes into how he arranges and how he learned to go so low.
Dude, you are not alone in your reaction to this song. I've listened to it dozens of times (so far) and it gives me the shivers every time. Now check out Misty Mountains (same song) by Peter Hollens feat. Tim Foust. Tim (from Home Free) has a beautiful 5 octave range too.
Yes, Blackbird hits the same. But, on the fun side, Bare Necessities and Saddle Up are awesome

Oh man, it's nice to see someone else react the way I did when I first heard this song. Definitely teared up too, which I wasn't expecting at all. He has such a beautiful, smooth voice - combined with Tolkien (I'm a diehard fan), this could not have been more perfect. As for suggestions, my favourites are 16 Tons, Blackbird and High and Dry. Or hey, it's only a few months until Christmas - his version of Mele Kalikimaka is pretty awesome. Honestly, they're all fantastic.

Unbelievably amazing is a pretty good description for .Geoff. As you get deeper into VoicePlay and Geoff's songs you realize that he's so consistent it's unreal.
I recently discovered Geoff's holy existence through Elizabeth Zharoff, I listened to this one on my own first, and salty water began seeping out through my tear ducts almost immediately. I instantly became a Geoff Castellucci fan.
I think that Geoff castellucci captured the emotional spectrum of the dwarves fleeing from there lonely mountain home

You should react to Geoff’s latest “House of the Rising Sun”. I looked in your playlists and didn’t see a reaction to Home Free “Ring of Fire” featuring Avi Kaplan. That would be another good reaction. Thanks for this reaction. I love the “Four Geoff” version of songs. Geoff has a smooth, mellow voice and an amazing range.
Geoff will always be my main man but I just discovered another incredible bass vocalist, Tomi P. He’s Czech I believe and his cover of Hellfire from Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame may be the most beautiful and haunting thing I’ve ever heard.
According to people smarter than me, the final chord of the song covers 6 octaves. All sung by Tomi. How are these bass guys allowed to have this much talent?

Geoff's voice is amazing! Truly astounding. Some similar hitting music I've listened to was Peter Hollen's version of Misty Mountains which he did with Tim Foust which oh he can go so low I really don't know which of them can go lower Geoff or Tim Foust and you can feel it in your bones. Plus Jonathan Young is astounding especially his covers of Hellfire, and Bells of Notre Dame. But yea this song is astounding!

So many great suggestions I won't add more... have added my like to them. Thank you for your honest reaction to this. There are some voices, some combinations that are devastatingly beautiful, and they crack open the heart and allow you to be more fully human. People are often terrified of the experience and avoid it by covering it with chatter or simply thinking of other things. To me, this is what art IS. It's that moment when something you see or hear or read just breaks you open, steals your breath away and you're never the same afterwards. A little bigger. I little more empathic. A little more open to everything around us. The scientists look for the answers in the brain wiring, but they still have more questions than answers. When it happens it's a good thing. Your courage in simply acknowledging it was wonderful. There area only a few singers that do this to me -- sometimes certain harmonies from VP, sometimes Geoff, and frequently Dimash.
It's not just Geoff, though. This song simply is beautiful, hands down the best part of the Hobbit trilogy.
Peter Hollens is quite skilled at his layering, he’s worth checking out. He does both fun and poignant videos, including a version of this with Tim Foust. It’s very different but equally as good.

Love this song! There is nothing wrong with a visceral, emotional reaction. Music of this genre (folk?) is so calming to me. Two things that are so impressive here are:Geoff sings in a range that most of us can barely reach, if at all, and then…he goes another octave lower. What??!! The second is: this song is done in a minor key. A lot of the runs and tone changes feel they should resolve into a major chord, Geoff is able to stay on tune and continue the minor chord.
I’d give a lot to see Geoff and Enya combine on an older “Celtic” song. Something like that would reach into my soul.
So the performance is amazing and elicits emotion, but how it plays into the lyrics is equally impressive. It is a song of the loss and destruction of home. It is not only rememberance of events, but a call to head back into a deadly situation to reclaim that home... And all the sacrifice that entails.
It’s weird how that emotion can hit, in Voiceplays cover of Just Sing, there is a high note towards the end that when I first heard it I was just in uncontrollable tears, not even a sad or slow song, just the pure sound pierces something deep

Geoff does an amazing job interpreting J.R.R. Tolkien's poem/song from The Hobbit. Not surprising, as Geoff does a phenomenal job in all of his work, and with Voiceplay.
This is based on the musical rendition in the Hobbit movies. Geoff didn’t do the original music, but his version is my favourite ❤️

Enjoy my good friend. I know what you mean cuase his voice especially his sub always knocks me out! His voice gives me a place to rest and a place to be inspired.
This song and the way he performed it gives a very somber feel, I feel that these men are preparing to go into battle, one they know they won't return from. So you get the feeling of sadness and regret from them getting ready to face their doom, but in a way you are eased by the fact they know what awaits them but although they are remorseful and saddened about what is coming, they have accepted their fate with the sense of they must face it, to protect their home, family, friends and whatever else their reasons. It is a very well done performance and one that carries a lot of heartache with it

This song is meant to be somber, somewhat hopeful, but sad, so that beginning way you felt, as if wanting to cry, it's the perfect emotion to feel for such a song.
I have only come to know about him a few weeks ago. I grew up with deep voiced men as a child. Listening to him reminds me of that, but as an old lady now he just melts me.
Metal Guy .... I 'almost' didn't watch this because I'm not into metal at all, and your name threw me off. Having said that, I can't tell you how very happy I am watching your reaction. I have been watching every single reaction video I can get my hands on today to 'this' video only. I discovered Geoff Castellucci TODAY I'm embarrassed to say. Your reaction was the same as mine. My eyes bugged out of my head almost, my jaw dropped, and I couldn't move. My heart swelled to the point it brought tears to my eyes involuntarily. You my good man, were the only one (so far) that was not afraid to say as a man that it had you close to tears and you didn't even know 'why'. That tells me a lot about you and it blessed me to my core. Once again I am reminded that you can't judge a book by it's cover (or name) and to pay attention. Your reaction was beautiful, and true. Well done sir. Keep doing 'that'. One more thing, in my looking around today on youtube, I also discovered Tim Storms who holds Guinness book of records for having the lowest bass voice. Look him up singing Lonesome Road (studio version.) Would love to see your reaction to that. It will knock you out of the park.

I'm not an expert but i was curious to see what the bass sounded in the past. Most happened to be true basso profundo with thick anatomy that limited anything past the 2nd and 3rd octave.
Their default speaking voice was mostly in the 1st octave. The three i named have mostly a 2nd octave speaking voice.
The advantage of being a Bass/Baritone is they can extend their range and reach the same notes as the true basso profundo. They can also extend their range to high 4th and some 5th octave notes.
You're reaction was very similar to mine. This man's voice is something unimaginable. Wow!!
I could only liken this to the first time I heard a pipe organ concert and the performance went so low it rumbled me out of my seat in tune. Great reaction video 💪😉😁

I’m fairly new to your channel, and I absolutely love your vibe! I’d just like to say how much I appreciate that you give us your reactions without stopping the video every ten seconds. I love hearing people’s insights, especially from a musical knowledge background, but sometimes I find it takes away from enjoying the song if people pause it too much.
Might I suggest also checking out Voiceplay! Geoff is they're bass singer, and they do some rather impressive covers. I suggest the "Oogie boogie" cover, as well as "Hoist the Colors" for starters.
Yeah, Aurora does that to me too. She could sing about washing the dishes, and I'd be there balling my eyes out. Every one of her songs just hits me like that for some reason.
