I like the part where Charlie tells Anne-Marie bedtime stories, while Itchy doesn't believe that a guy named Robin Hood steals money to give to the poor and doesn't keep any of the fortune. Anne-Marie would later tell Kate and Harold that she lives and sleeps in a junkyard with her dog Charlie. Which makes Kate and Harold horrified to learn of the terrible situation of the little orphan girl.

2:01 Awwww. Anne-Marie accepts charlie as her best friend but charlie doesn't care. Hes just using the girl although he does change and genuinely likes her then. I would make her so happy 😁 Plus, I would try to b patient with Anne Marie when we're both trying to sleep. The kid must've had a tough time living with carface.
I view things like this, Charlie wanted to use her a bit like Carface did, but he wanted an even flow of money, money going out of his establishment, as well as money going in, where as Carface wanted it one way, going in and not out, Charlie is the greedy selfless proprietor that most casinos need, and Charlie I think just wanted to get off the ground, have his business at a stable point where money was flowing in and out at a healthy rate and then get Anne Marie into a forever home with parents who love her, while Carface only wanted to use her for the rest of her life, ironically, all Carface's problems happened when he had Charlie set up on death row, had he just shared the profits 50/50, they would both be millionaires and moreover, Carface wouldn't be tormented in hell currently.

Charlie: Who knows why fate led us to little Anne Marie? Charlie: Maybe it was my lust for revenge on Carface , or getting more money to make my own Casino, my innate selfishness , Greed or my... . Okay! Who's in charge of the freeze-frames? Itchy: Sorry Charlie. Charlie: Anywho... . Rescuing Anne Marie was a cinch. Then came the real scary part: [dramatic music] Charlie: Parenthood.
Anne Marie: Charlie? Charlie!? Charlie: zzzz huh what? Anne marie: I gotta go Charlie: Go go where? Anne marie: you know, Go! Bad! Charlie: OH GO!? Why didn't you say so kid? Comon let's go! When you gotta go, you gotta go.
In the first film, all Charlie originally cared about was Anne-Marie being his money maker, with her amazing gift to talk to animals, only wanting to use her much like Carface did. However, being the con artist he was, he wanted to gain her trust first by appearing like a Robin Hood figure in her eyes, stating he rescued her from Carface and only gambles to "give money to the poor". Unlike Carface, he was more than willing to give her anything she wanted and to keep her happy as long as he got what he wanted out of her. However, the more time Charlie spent with her, the more caring he became of her, affectionately calling her "squeaker." Near the end of the film, he willingly sacrificed his life to save her from the burning casino ship. By the time they exchanged goodbyes, their union is as strong as a father-daughter's relationship. He even promised her they will meet again someday. As Charlie is a German Shepherd/Border Collie mix, he could not help but treat Anne-Marie the way he was bred to, which is love and protect her with his life. This is probably because his breed was to guard flocks of sheep and other livestock from getting hurt from predators. This specific duty came to him when he bonded with Anne-Marie, which is why he became fiercely loving of her like a dog-owner companionship.
I’m amazed that so many comments didn’t notice about the changes of the movie and the characters. Yes, Charlie is selfish and used the girl as a tool for success. But, When the movie had progressed, Anne Marie Pointed out to Charlie that he stole the wallet and he was doing wrong, giving him what he had never felt before, guilt. That was a kickstarted for Charlie’s character development, even when he still manipulated, he wasn’t used to affection and he wasn’t raised right to begin with about what love is until his sacrifice. The little girl started off as a tool, but ended up being the moral compass in Charlie’s life. Thanks to her innocence, selflessness forgiveness, and genuine character, Charlie had sacrifice his life for hers. Shows that the power of influence can change ones heart.
Unfortunately because of Judith’s tragic situation, out of respect they decided not to include the character in anything else or recast her, this film was dedicated to her memory…
They should've just mentioned about what happened to her character all those years later, given closure to her character's story, say she had a family with kids of her own and was a successful model or clothes designer. (I think one of those two career paths would be perfect for Anne Marie)

But he doesn't mean harm as he has been shown to have a very caring, compassionate side in the first place, and compared to Carface, Charlie was more of a pleaser and was proven to be quite popular amongst the other dogs, an example of when Charlie returned to the casino after getting away from the pound, it is hinted by the other casino goers that Charlie ran the casino better than Carface, giving everyone what they wanted and gained more popularity and success than Carface after running his own newly-built casino. Also, spending the day with Anne-Marie made him begin to warm up a lot more, even going far as to sacrifice his own life for hers. Towards the end of the first film, with the sacrifice of his life made, he returns to Anne-Marie with his last farewells with a personality fully channeled and developed into the heart of a father mostly due to his great care for her.
