  • It wouldn't be a BMW if it doesn't have oil leaks. The valve cover is a major area prone to oil leaks in BMWs. In this 4th episode of our E82 FBO series, we replace the 135i's valve cover with a brand new one to prevent oil from leaking after going full bolt-on.

Your video was really useful for me. Probably one of the best on UA-cam. Very clear and informative with info on tools needed. Doesn't get better than this. One possible stumbling point. That torx bolt holding the stress bar could be torqued really tight. I had to use a long (48" 3/4" breaker bar) to crack mine. I also can't believe what BMW charges for the valve cover knowing that this is a common failure point.
Thanks again for the helpful video!

Thanks for the recognition and mentioning the stumbling point! Will pin your comment so that others can take note as well.

One question, how did you get the cowling to budge so that the back of the valve cover can clear the valve components? I notice when you did the final pull the cowling lifted a significant amount. Did I miss that in the video? Thanks!

@@DS-ec6lt We removed the cowl entirely (watch from 3:30 to 5:10). If you're referring to the 'other cowl' being lifted at 26:55, we didn't loosen it or remove any bolts iirc - just a bit of brute force to remove the valve cover.

I just did this yesterday and replaced to replace the valvetronic motor. Since I was already in there, swapped out plugs and the gasket. Props to you for recording your progress as this took me 9 hours total, alone, without a camera.

Kudos to you for taking the time to do this yourself! You must've had quite the sense of accomplishment afterwards

Last comment i would say for actual removal and install .. have a buddy . cracked my old one when trying to remove on my own .. there is a section (middle bolt section on the firewall section of valve cover is somewhat hard to clear without another person holding the remaining plastic near the fire wall ). that step helped me a great deal on install. When torque down the bolts for the 1st time i notice other bolts go loose (thats the valve cover getting seated I assume ) so I torqued them in order three times and by the 3rd time all was well .. hope this tip can help others

@drivewrenchrepeat Great tutorial i used this guide for my install . I used the FCP Euro parts list your provided (used Elring valve cover instead of oem ) and and was able do the install over the weekend(did new coils and plugs also). i cheaped out and did not buy a new vent hose (and of course my old one broke a clip while removing .) The one step i changed was removing the 6 connections for the fuel lines on the valve cover side and removed the entire fuel rail with the lines in place.. This gave a little more clearance when reinstalling valve cover and also allowed for easier install since i did not have to reinstall the fuel lines one by one. PSA be very careful with removing injector clips as those can also be a pain in the arse to remove without breaking

I ended up removing the wipers and the cover too to better access no needed but made it easy for me. 10 year old plastic, broke some clips and the crankcase breather hose just disintegrated ahahahha anyway thanks.

One idea is to put a towel over the latch just in case if the trunk falls, it won't close.

It takes less than 5 minutes to take that wiper cowl out of your way instead of fiddle fucking around with it and risking breaking anything or rolling the gasket. Literally comes out and goes in like butter when you get that out of your way.

Nice ! Lots of info there as I'll have to replace this seal on my E92 N55.
To what I see, your engine bay is very very similar if not identical (just a tad smaller than my 3 serie)
    Thank you.

Thanks for the video. On my e88, the torx on top of the shock tower is a E14. Not a E15 like you're saying.

@pinotz Thanks. E14 may work on E82 as well, not sure.

Those things you’re calling “Christmas trees” aren’t supposed to come out. You can unclip them to release the wires.

you can just leave it with the bracket and throw to the other side...no need to open the clips

I did it last year (only gasket) and no issue so far. But, It was hard job when I remove a valve cover from engine bay…

Definitely a tough and painstaking kob, but glad you got the gasket done!
