It was the most win-win business decision I can think of. Microsoft didn't get broken up and Apple didn't go out of business. Both companies prospered greatly as a result.
You have the wrong version of the story. First off, the money wasn't a voluntary investment by Microsoft. It was a settlement for a patent dispute in which Microsoft was accused of violating one of Apple's parents. Still a win/win because it let both sides avoid a nasty and expensive court battle. 1. This didn't prevent Microsoft from being broken up because the anti-trust case was specifically relating to Microsoft bundling Internet Explorer with Windows 95. Regardless, the very idea that Microsoft could somehow prove they aren't a monopoly by investing in a competitor doesn't make much sense because all it really proves is that you're so big of a monopoly you need to create the illusion of competition. 2. Apple wasn't on the verge of bankruptcy, they weren't doing well by any means at that time but they had a lot of reserve cash to keep them afloat while they reworked their business plan. If this 150 million was the only thing "saving" Apple then Apple would have gone bankrupt later that year because they posted a 160 million dollar loss.
I like how the crowd boos Bill Gates who is helping to save the company and they didn't boo the Pepsi guy which kicked Steve Jobs out of Apple earlier which caused the company to almost die.
Steve said it: 7:25 "We have to let go of this notion that for Apple to win, Microsoft has to lose." By this point in time, everyone (and Steve himself) knew that Microsoft was not going to lose its massive market share that it had anytime soon.
And Microsoft needed this deal for other reasons too. The company was dealing with antitrust lawsuits. So in order for Microsoft to stay whole, it had to help nurse Apple back to health to serve as its competitor.
Yeah, but in the heat of the battle they probably did think they had to “beat” Microsoft. It’s the lazy kind of thinking that caused Apple to lose its luster in the time Steve was gone from the company.

Gates will not only be remembered for his massive contribution to Information Technology as a whole.... but for his philanthropic duties outside of Microsoft. The Bill and Melinda foundation is the largest transparently operated charity in the world. Gates is altruistic, Jobs wasn't.
Wow... I had no idea that this conference was so aggressive. Full of admiration for this character, an incredible and driven innovator who truly does think differently.
Steve had the balls to sign a deal with the Devil (as it were)... Bill had the balls to help out a company full of people that would rather see him dead (just saying what everyone in the audience probably was thinking.......... most likely). I don't know about Microsoft (today).... but look at where Apple is now, after the fallout of this deal from 1997. Great things can happen if you learn to face the music.
This must have been a painful experience for Steve to go through. A lot of people really do not like Microsoft and the way that they conduct their business. Microsoft has always been seen as the enemy and he had to embrace them because Apple was not doing well at the time and was trying to recover its former greatness (which they would eventually did)
Apple doesn't have nerds. Apple has 'rebels', 'revolutionaries', 'artiste's' and a host of other corny bullshit motherfuckers. The cornball bullshit gets no larger than the corn-filled shit found in their camp. Nerds don't give a shit about 'polished aluminum corners' and elegant design. Nerds care only about an open, free ecosystem be it on the desktop or in the mobile OS. To refer to Apple users as 'nerds', cheapens the meaning of 'nerd'.
Apple doesn't simplify technology, they dumb it down. They take decisions that should and CAN be made by consumers and restrict them. For example, try changing a batter on an iphone or adding an SD card to an iphone. In the Android ecosystem you have the choice if you want it, in the Apple ecosystem if you want to replace your battery, you have to leave it to the 'battery replacement professionals'? What's the point of that? Is it too complicated for regular people to do?
***** Im guessing you havent even used one. My friend despises apple, but he used one and is now getting one to use alongside his PC. They aren't that different, the only thing thats different is the architecture and software, its still a computer. I use it for its simplicity to efficiently produce high quality media production at a face pace, something PC's don't really have. Its not an amazing gaming platform, but its still an option. I use it for occasional games, while my PC runs main games. (though i use consoles for gaming). So you can't really bad mouth the Macintosh, since without them, computers wouldn't be nearly the same as they are today thanks to Apple.
"They really aren't that different" "The ARCHITECTURE and SOFTWARE are different" "I use apple to produce high quality media, something PC's don't have" "They really aren't that different" lol What drugs do you have to take for that to make sense? And what did Apple contribute to computing? Not much. Seriously, not much. If you think Apple made the PC what it is today, you live in a fantasy world.
I think a more accurate way to put it is, it gave them the chance to save themselves. The deal alone wouldn't sustain them forever, and the 2 products that made Apple what it is today were the iPod and later the iPhone, neither of which Microsoft had any involvement in. But of course Apple could never have developed those products in the first place if they had gone under back in the 90's, which Microsoft was instrumental in preventing.
Others here have commented similarly, but missed one key point; Microsoft in 1997 was making more revenue selling software to Mac users than Apple made selling computers. That was what was going around the campfire, so to speak. Anyway, if you love Apple you owe a little gratitude to the folks in Seattle.
One of my friend's, Alan, was present in the audience. I always thought the scene of this in the movie Pirate of Silicon Valley was somewhat dramatized, but then he reported about the 'booing', especially when Bill Gates appeared on the screen.
Steve Jobs was a great general in all the sense than Sun Tzu expected. The Apple purists saw that day how dady did business for real. Cheers where you are now Steve.
This must have been a difficult MacWorld for Steve. Apple seemed so small in comparison to Microsoft at the time. Times have changed. Now it is Microsoft that needs help with some categories.
Love that the applause stop as soon as Bill mentions IE. The two companies should colab more often, except out of their own free will. Imagine computers with the creative forces of both Windows and Apple.
steve: I heard you're making friends with the justice department? billl: and your back on board in a sinking ship? steve: if apple goes down u have no one to fight.
Chrit S, Linux is not Unix. GNU/Linux operating systems are Unix-like to varying degree (that is, not all of them are 100% POSIX-compliant). Mac OS X was actually derived from a Unix (FreeBSD). OS X's kernel (Darwin) had been under development since NeXT (NeXTSTEP, the precursor to OS X, was released in 1989), long before the first release of the Linux kernel (1991) and the first GNU/Linux OS (it fleshed out around 1992-1993). Consequently, Linux could not have been an inspiration for Jobs and Mac OS X: it simply didn't exist.

And so began the ascent of Apple.
Great things can happen if you learn to face the music.
rkmugen he needed a compeitor
Who watched this after watching Genius?

😂😂😂
I loved how steve drank his water before making the announcement
This must have been a painful experience for Steve to go through. A lot of people really do not like Microsoft and the way that they conduct their business. Microsoft has always been seen as the enemy and he had to embrace them because Apple was not doing well at the time and was trying to recover its former greatness (which they would eventually did)
Every Apple nerd should watch this before opening their mouths!
TheLAKERSareGodsTeam I agree with you, sir!
"They really aren't that different"
"The ARCHITECTURE and SOFTWARE are different"
"I use apple to produce high quality media, something PC's don't have"
"They really aren't that different"
lol What drugs do you have to take for that to make sense?
And what did Apple contribute to computing? Not much. Seriously, not much. If you think Apple made the PC what it is today, you live in a fantasy world.
More people need to see this. One of the most important moments in both business and computing history.
Office came in: everybody claps. It shows that MS Office has no competition, even today.
I don't think Apple would have done the same Thing for Microsoft....
This deal literally saved Apple
I think a more accurate way to put it is, it gave them the chance to save themselves. The deal alone wouldn't sustain them forever, and the 2 products that made Apple what it is today were the iPod and later the iPhone, neither of which Microsoft had any involvement in. But of course Apple could never have developed those products in the first place if they had gone under back in the 90's, which Microsoft was instrumental in preventing.
It's ok to say they owe microsoft. Bill literally saved there ass from bankruptcy.
Others here have commented similarly, but missed one key point; Microsoft in 1997 was making more revenue selling software to Mac users than Apple made selling computers. That was what was going around the campfire, so to speak. Anyway, if you love Apple you owe a little gratitude to the folks in Seattle.
Things that annoy Apple fans:
- Being offered Microsoft products
- Microsoft investing in Apple
- 1K monitor stands
5:45 i love bills smile when he says mac office 98. dude really loves what he does.
One of my friend's, Alan, was present in the audience. I always thought the scene of this in the movie Pirate of Silicon Valley was somewhat dramatized, but then he reported about the 'booing', especially when Bill Gates appeared on the screen.
Look at all the iDork's in the crowd having a heart attack lol.
InvisibleYetVisible you're just poor and can't afford it so you just complain
Pooppo Popopisfh your the one who seems like a , I've seen you comment on this same video like 8 or 10 different times.
InvisibleYetVisible "iDorks" 😂 Brilliant!
11:58 the guy on the right lol
Lmao
And they’re both trillions companies right now !
Everytime I watch an Apple event for some reason it reminds me of David Koresh and his Davidians
So microsoft actually saved Apple?
Yup, they saved them from bankrupcy
I didn’t know that Microsoft had saved Apple
Steve Jobs was a great general in all the sense than Sun Tzu expected. The Apple purists saw that day how dady did business for real. Cheers where you are now Steve.
Anyone else here after reading it in Steve Jobs bio?
This has to be an iconic presentation
"Since we believe in choice" but no choice of payment in App Store .. we want 30%
11:55 haha. That guy shaking his head just can't handle it.
His god just told him that he's not really god.
Uderrated
4:45 troll face
Shut up
Lol
top 10 late 90's anime trollfaces
This must have been a difficult MacWorld for Steve. Apple seemed so small in comparison to Microsoft at the time. Times have changed. Now it is Microsoft that needs help with some categories.
What other browsers did Apple offer on the Mac at this time?
And what was the default browser before this partnership?
I was in that crowd! One of the coolest times I ever saw Apple go through as there was again hope for a further. And look at where we are now.
Today October 30th 2014 they ended the day on the stock market worth $618.97 Billion :)
$2.02 T now. That's Crazy.
"We believe Internet Explorer is a good browser" - :D)
Love that the applause stop as soon as Bill mentions IE.
The two companies should colab more often, except out of their own free will. Imagine computers with the creative forces of both Windows and Apple.
What an atmosphere there used to be at these conferences!
Sadly, you don't see it anymore. Nowadays, there are no such live conferences at all.
While I find Apple products easier to use than Windows, it's nice to actually hear a relatively unbiased comment for once. Well done.
2:24 people screaming "Noooo"
That history makes me cry. I've seen a history caught in video
Ok, time for hackintosh on my surface book
An epic moment is the computing industry!
Can't you just see the bliss on Jobs' smirking face? Ohh the love hahaha
steve: I heard you're making friends with the justice department?
billl: and your back on board in a sinking ship?
steve: if apple goes down u have no one to fight.
I see you're a man of culture aswell....
Steve Jobs is so awesome in the first minutes of this lion cage! 😂
Joke of the video... Internet Explorer is a really good browser..
1997 to 2015 Internet Explorer hasn't changed.
No
Quite funny that people hated Internet Explorer even way back then.
When it was literally the best browser by far and even better on Mac later than on Windows
3:43
Guy to his friend: "I like that shit right there, Bill."
Bill: LOL
No love for linux? Guess that says something about who the real threat is...
+TheAnoniemo nobody will waste their only life trying to figure out how to get that pile of shit working
+TheAnoniemo Well Apple did go back to an Unix based OS because Steve was so comfortable with Linux so that is a win.
I think for me, Firefox is the best browser. Peace
If Microsoft wouldn’t have saved Apple. We wouldn’t have got the iPhone.
Thank you for the think different speech steve.
I felt the power of Steve Job speech through
Only a few years later they will spend has much time on stage spitting on the company that save them.
Bill gates-The ultimate warlord
2:24 you know what happens next....
even back then it had a bad name it's sad though cause it managed to mop the floor with Netscape
bloody fuckin hell!!! Two Legends on the same stage!!!! Take a bow!!
Shows how Steve jobs grew, he said to take responsibility, and he said Apple needed not blame others but to take responsibility for their actions
