Fighting fear at 4000m: NORDEND, MONTE ROSA

  • Monte Rosa has 2 summits, one of which - Durfourspitze, is the second highest peak in the Western Alps, only Mont Blanc being higher. Having climbed this peak 10 years ago, we attempted the lower peak, Nordend.
We did not expect to be afraid.

    Brave decision!
I once had to turn back from a 4000+ m summit in the Rockies due to thunderstorms... Better safe than fried!

Hi Joachim! Thanks for the comment, I’m very pleased that others are sharing their own experiences. I would love to go to the Rockies, so very envious on that front. Thunderstorms.. wow. They can be really scary, though fascinating at the same time. It’s great to have an insight into your own adventures, especially one in such a beautiful part of the world. All the best! Sue 😊

A real pleasure to watch Sue from end to end. Yes, many distractions on the way up enough to suck the time out of the day. Onwards and upward though. A good early morning start from the hut and happy to be out there - I resonated. Turning back? Well, a decision was made and at the time it was the right one. The journey back was incredible and imbued with the light of the mountains the fail melted away like the ice. Good going. Mark

Fit happy and glowing sounds like a good day in the mountains 🏔️ 🇨🇭Sue 🙏🏼🤠
That’s the thing with mountains mind they keep calling you back and you’ll be back I’m sure 👍
With you and Dave’s experience & skill set this was the call 👌🏻
But there is always a small ego hit! it’s that ego that gets you up to the summits on the good days !
Very good edit by the way and those mountain landscapes you treated us to where perfect 🏔️🙏🏼
    Great great documentary
    Very best wishes Simon 🤠👍
Brilliant that your both safe 🏔️🙏🏼

@@SetForAdventures Thanks Simon. You’ve said to me before that it’s addictive so your comments have me some inspiration for the theme of this one. Yep, both safe & happy. At least our ego was a little mollified by having already done the highest summit before. I think winter grades sometimes have to be interpreted with caution. They can potentially change each time you visit the same peak! Best wishes to you all. Sue

Beautiful views and scenery on a lovely clear day. But it’s great to know that you always have the strength of personality to be able to make the correct call, when and if required. Well done, it’s no failure. Stay safe our little five-foot Lyth. 😊

Well Sue, there are no prizes for ending up in a shroud. If it doesn't feel right it probably isn't for you. Older and wiser is a much used phrase but it's true. Age definitely plays a part in our decision making and our mortality comes into sharper focus the older we get. But hey, what an amazing environment you experienced! I'm only mildly jealous 😉Really enjoyed the format of this one with your visual commentary and the background music was spot on. This will defo get you to the 500 subs 😍Hope to catch you both soon 🤗🤗

Hi Ian - looking forward to seeing you and thanks for the response. My mantra is to age gracefully, which means enjoyment without too much ego. Honestly, I'd love someone to tell me that there is usually some kind of rock runners on that ridge that were buried, but hey, it was wonderful to enjoy the descent without letting disappointment spoil the experience. It's a momentous day out, one which we were supposed to spend the next day recovering from, but that didn't really happen 😂😂

You shouldn't feel too disappointed because you've accomplished quite a lot with your summits of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa but i know what its like to be disappointed because after i made island peak summit in Nepal in 2013 i tried for Ama dablam in 2017 but due to illness i was unable to complete the climb

Hi Darren, thanks for the comments. Wow. Impressive climbing, illness notwithstanding. A shame to be thwarted on such a huge mission, I can understand how that must have felt. Have you returned since that time? If you have footage from Nepal please do attach the link. All the best! Sue
