  • Yes, we store all (pretty much) of our food in mason jars (even leftovers!). I love the way it looks in my fridge, how I can see everything in my jars at first glance, how they don't break like Pyrex lids, and how cost-effective this method is! Watch to learn more about how this looks for our family and some hurdles I've sorted out when switching to mason jars for storing our food.

Yay! So glad this was helpful! Keep in mind it’s a bit of an adjustment. You might feel like it was a mistake after a week or so. But once I pushed past that now it all makes sense.

Mason jars are wonderful for storing leftovers. We do it all the time in our household. We also freeze leftovers in them too. Getting mason jars from thrift stores are so much cheaper. 😍

Those white lids are fine for the frig and good for ferments as they are not airtight and don't hold up well after repeated freezing. I generally use the Ball black lids for the freezer as they don't crack and either the metal lids or Ball black lids for dry storage in the pantry.
Another plus in using mason jars is that they are easy to take somewhere or give food to a friend and not fret if the container isn't returned (of course I make sure not to let the plastic lids out).

Great points! I have white lids with a seal in them which makes them more air tight, but I also have some white lids that don't have the seal and are not air tight.

I have been having the same issue with my Pyrex containers and I have also been starting to use Mason jars more and more around my home. I may have to consider using them more in my fridge as well! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for this video. I’m vegan. I have a lot of mason jars that I have been using lately to store dry goods like lentils, salt, grains, tea, herbs, superfoods, etc. I just started organizing my refrigerator like your last week. I was waiting for my plastic regular and wide-mouth lids that I ordered from Amazon. I really like your idea for the tiny jars for leftover sauces. Those sauces are usually what stain Tupperware. Spaghetti sauce always stains. But we can use these glass jars 🫙 without ever fearing they will stain. After I get my refrigerator organized, I’m going to get more mason jars so that I can start sprouting.

That’s so great! I haven’t used plastic in many years due to the chemicals it leaches into our food 😬

@@TransformedHomemakersSociety Yes, you are right about that. I’m 62. I grew up with Tupperware. My grandmother (born 1905) used to can. But when I was a kid, canning was replaced by the fridge, frozen foods, and Tupperware. No one ever thought about plastics leaching into the foods. Now my grandmother’s canning jars are making a comeback-into the fridge. 😊 I recently learned that even when the label on plastic containers says BPA-free, that is meaningless because they are still made of virtually the same chemicals with only one chemical changed. Those plastics will also leach plastic into foods. So glad for the internet and the ease of sharing knowledge these days. Again, thank you for your video. ❤️

I do have quite a few pyrex containers, but have also been storing our leftovers and such in mason jars for the past few years, things like an onion or something that won't fit into my mason jar I just cut in half or quarters till it does 😂 we also use our mason jars for our glasses too, they're so versatile and durable! Great video 💖

Love mason jars! They’re out drinking glasses, food containers, storage containers, etc. for onions or bell peppers or things like that, I always just dice or slice them up all the way and store that way. Then it makes it easier to use up later!

Looks a Lot like my thrifted storage jars and I recycled white plastic lids from mayo jars and bought some Walmart mason jar lids. The jars work well and look good. Like you, I kept a few of the nicer glass storage containers. My favorites are a thrifted set of square, nesting Pyrex with white lids. Thank you for the video!

Oh this looks so nice. I have glass storing containers that lids clip closed but thankfully they have clear lids but do want to use more mason jars for fruit and veggies.

Great. I keep my glass/plastic jars and use them for dishes and storage. I NEVER buy baggies, I cut store plastic bags to proper size and use them for freezing.

Awesome! We try not to use them either (except for the freezer or certain odd items). We also have those little reusable baggies that we use!

I thought you couldn’t refrigerate the ones with metal lids because the metal gets into the food?

    • @TransformedHomemakersSociety
      @TransformedHomemakersSociety  Рік тому

The metal never touches my food so I can't speak to that. I could see how that would be the case though!

You shouldn’t store your jars with the lids on as if there’s any smells or moisture in there it can be trapped and cause mold to grow
