I will dehydrate what I cannot eat + preserve the rind. About how long does it take u to dehydrate the watermelon? How thick do u slice it up? Thank u

I learned about making dried Greens Mix from you Heidi and my whole family is hooked on it. We put it in and on just about everything! Scrambled eggs taste sooooo yummy with it.
My dehydrator is almost always a sound we hear in the background at hom, it’s just the way life is now.
There is always something either from the store, from the garden or from foraging on our property that I can dehydrate. I give small jars of Greens Mix to friends and neighbors to encourage them to learn how to add nutrients and taste to their foods.
Thank you from my heart, for all you share with us, I know you put YOUR heart into all you do❣️❣️❣️❣️

When it comes to Flour / Sugar etc... put them in a brown paper lunch bag.... fold it at the top just once and put a piece of masking tape to keep it closed leave both ends of the paper lunch bag open to all the air to be vacuumed out.... mark the tape as to the contents and then place it in a food saver or mason jar and vacuum it... no worries about the items getting under the lids.

I am 67 now but for some reason when I was a teenager I started collecting old glass jars, I used them for beads and odds and ends, no longer into beads so now they all hold herbs and spices and making tinctures and salves. I still buy every glass jar I find, I pay a lot more now, not the .25 cents like way back but I still buy them. I freeze my raspberries on sheets and then freeze them but they always get ice crystals. I am getting a brake bleeder now! Really enjoy your videos, thanks so much for what you do.

I've had problems sealing regular mouth jars too. To solve the problem, I place an extra lid (bottom side facing up) on top of the lid that I'm using to seal the jar. Place the sealing contraption on top and vacuum as you normally would. Not perfect, but it works, at least for me.

Yeah, my break bleeder came off the 0 mark very quickly, but it seals well, just pump it higher😉 one of my best investments!
Actually, I started to vac seal my daughter's jam. They get the costco size strawberry jam and the last part would always go moldy. I take half out into a pint jar and seal that, it will hold in a dark pantry until they finish the first half, less waste.

New to dehydrating here. Having fun.
Always have done freezing...now using jars.
The vacuum sealer that I have doesn't have an attachment port. Giving it to my son. I use jars to store food...wide mouth only.
Getting a Food Saver...jar sealer attachments had to be purchased separately...unlike during in the good ole days.
Disabled and unable to use brake bleeder...my hands...
May start canning...it's just mom and me now.. along with my dog. I make his food. But it doesn't look good with the Covid-19. I don't go into the stores... both mom and I are at risk. Been doing grocery pickup in the city. No delivery out here in the sticks. Our Walmart is putting up signs for grocery pickup...hopefully they'll deliver.

There is a version of the 2 quart jar that is hard to seal with the big vacuum attachment. I use a rubber band to constract the seal. I bought a rotary-vane vacuum pump to do my vacuum canning. I bought a brass fitting that I machined to fit the hose. The hose now fits the brass fitting, and I can now draw a tremendous vacuum on the jar very quickly.

  • @snorman1951
    @snorman1951 2 роки тому +1

If the lid pings while pumping you have a leak. Your brake bleeder creates a vacuum in the adapter and in the jar simultaneously. The jar seals when the hose fitting is removed and air pressure slams the lid down on the jar. We tend to think of vacuum as a sucking effect, but in reality it's the atmosphere pressing down and sealing the lid.

Don't know if this helps or not. You mentioned some people are having a hard time getting pressure above 10 to get a good seal. If they are a newbie with the brake bleeder (like I was) they may not realize there is a little plastic spacer piece that keeps the handle grip from being completely compressed. It needs to be removed. I don't know why they include it, it isn't real obvious that it's just a shipping spacer. Should just pop right out.

Oh my gosh, we're they frozen or fresh? Fresh takes a lit longer and I had some towels I didn't fold just threw on dining room table. Lord, that was "sniff, sniff.. really?" Hahaha. So, fresh is going to smell up the house until it gets dry.

I’m just new to doing all these things, even though I’m “older”... But as always I sure enjoy all your videos and am in awe of all your skills. I saw a video that said if you have crackers, cereal etc (and dont have extra mason jars) that they can go in the dehydrator if they start going stale a bit. Havent tried it, i dont buy cold cereals or crackers anymore. Cupcake liners are good for powder items too. I have a little NESCO VS-C1 Classic Vacuum Sealer, like 50.00 bucks, 3 years ago and that has been a great investment, small & stores easy, it dont cut the bags, it dont store the bags, but works great, I especially like the pulse button for doing soups and other stuff. That ring on the vacuum for the regular jar always comes off with me too lol. Sounds like a defective brake bleeder, I had one that the dial acted up and evetually it just stopped working. Good to have a back up. Harbor Freight has good prices on those

Freeze drying should only be a matter of preference. I will buy some freeze dried foods but only those I like but have no interest in the high cost, maintenance and space required for a freeze dryer when it really does not preserve that much more nutrients than dehydrating. Any nutrients it may save better than dehydrating are immediately lost when they are cooked.
