Some skip the standard morality meter in favour of direct punishment, as in The Warriors, Banjo Kazooie, Resident Evil 4 and Spelunky. PS2 game The Warriors for instance, is based on the film of the same name and finds the titular gang in hostile territory and hunted by every other gang in New York as they make their way back to Coney Island.
In the face of these insurmountable odds, it is unwise and unhelpful to try duffing up your fellow Warriors, like a treacherous jerk.
If you do decide to thump a member of your gang, you’ll quickly regret it when your former allies turn on you, hitting harder than any of the actual enemies you face in the game.
Betrayal is also met with swift, severe retribution in Resident Evil 4. You may have your reasons for wanting to shoot your nominal ally Luis Sera - that waistcoat, for a start.
When the two of you are trapped in a cabin fighting off hordes of angry ganados, however, it’s in your best interests to work with him to repel the advancing horde.
The man throws you ammo and does his fair share of shooting so really, you should leave him alone.
What's more, if you do betray Luis, or even hit him accidentally too many times, your Leon Kennedy gets shot to bits by his erstwhile comrade, with zombies still battering down the door. Embarrassing, really. Let that be a lesson to you, probably about humans being the real monsters, Leon.

The shopkeepers in Spelunker are amateurs compared to the Kecleon brothers in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. Steal a single item and the entire floor will be flooded with angry level 99 Kecleons that all move at twice your speed and never stop spawning.
Not to mention you can't attack them without suffering badly, since you can only deal 1 damage to them

When I first played the game I was *super* young, so I didn't get that you weren't supposed to attack them and eventually quit the game out of frustration.
And you need to attack them in order to recruit one to your team.
In skyrim if you kill a chicken the whole town turns on you and I mean the WHOLE TOWN
I found that out just this week by accidentally pressing the shout button with fire breath equipped

In Skyrim, the first town you enter, is Riverwood. The first thing you see, a chicken. First thing you want to do, kill the chicken.

Arella Jardin I ran away from Riverwood and didn't return for (in game) years after saving everyone. They still were after my blood.
I think everyone did that on the first playthrough. I mean I did.
The Thirsty Fish I suppose I'm the only one who has never killed/attacked the chickens in Riverwood. Innocents? Guards? Children? Yes to all of the above. I could just never bring myself to assault a poor, defenseless chicken.

I know! I turned into a vampire lord and bit one little shopkeeper, just a little. Suddenly I'm Whiteruns most wanted. She didn't even have a real shop, it was a kiosk in front of The Bannered Mare! Carlotta knew the score, she was totally into it.

Thankfully, I didn't actually experience that cry all that much but *dear* god when I did have to deal with it, I thought my ears were bleeding... I haven't played games wearing headphones since.

i had a guard show up in a hard as hell dungeon asking if i had seen the grey fox and then walked off ignoring the necromancers or vampires (cant remember which)

Oh yes, when you go crazy killing cows in the start of the witcher 3. This summons the bovine defense force I kid you not, a massive fiend who is out to utterly ruin your day and is near impossible to kill.

Not sure if you know this, but they stuck that in the game as a kind of joke patch to the exploit that let players farm cash early by killing cows for skin, resting an hour and repeating.

Playing Skyrim as a mage, fighting off the occultists. I use streams of fire to take them down, until one guard walks in the way. Suddenly he's singed and all the guards are coming at me. It was literally friendly fire.
Did that once in Winterhold. Was fighting a dragon, as you do, then the fucking Jarl decides it's a good idea to challenge the large fire-breathing-ancient being to fisticuffs and when I shout the dragon (as well as eventually kill it) he decides I've broken the rules of a fair fisticuffs duel and challenges me. Of course, he had no sentiments about the town guards breaking that rule.

Remembered a certain crappy game based on a semi-decent movie - Bad Boys II. If you accidentally (more like, deliberately) shoot your partner several times, he will turn hostile. If he kills you - game over. If you kill him - game over. If you aggro him right before the mission ends - your game crashes and savefile gets corrupted. Yay?
I remember the Luis shooting thing happening to me, but I had shot him a few times by ACCIDENT.
I hadn't even realized that I was doing it in the middle of all the shooting in the cabin...so when the cutscene came on...I thought it was really part of the storyline and was some crazy twist that he was against you the whole time xD

What about Magda outside of the Hila Rao shrine in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? She has planted flowers all around the shrine and INSISTS that you not step on them or otherwise do anything to hurt them. After three times it will go to a small cutscene where she goes absolutely apeshit and attack knocking you down three hearts! The damage isn't much, overall. But, the fact that Nintendo intentionally placed a cutscene for this tells me they KNEW people were going to be annoyed by being forced to play nice with the plant life.

Get an LMG, and just fire everywhere. In some games, it does let you get away with like 4 accidental shots on your guys, with them just shrugging it off, but eventually it just restarts the entire thing.

Interestingly, there's two flee-the-mansion-in-the-car endings in Clock Tower. The one shown in the video is the more cinematic one, which you get if you see either Laura or Ann bite it, but if you see both of them die and *then* flee, you get away entirely-- only to get a screen telling you that Jennifer was found dead in her room three days later. That was the ending I got first when I first played it (sorry, Lotte, but you're on your own), and for some reason it still chilled me to the core.

Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. In the end there's fighting all over between light and dark. As light side I accidentally hit a Jedi in the beginning of the level, which turned every Jedi against me for the rest of the level, forced to fight everyone.

Metal Gear Solid 2, if Rosemary get very angry with you, if you do one of various things, like killing to many seagulls, going into a bathroom with an adult book in the weapon slot and then call Campbell (just to name a few) and then try to save well she won't let save, it doesn't last but the game does tell you to stop jackass.

Undertale, the genocide route... Many people say that going up against Sans at the end of it is the punshment for playing through the genocide route, but I maintain that it's just _part_ of the punishment and that the genocide route itself has the distinguished honour of both being the choice to needlessly be a complete and utter jackass _and_ the punishment for making that choice, turning an otherwise enjoyable and funny game into the most dull and drab grindfest you've ever forced yourself through. And once you've completed a genocide route, the game takes away your "happily ever after" ending. Because, at that point, you've proved that you either do not deserve a "happily ever after" or that you would, if the option was available, play a route that ruined your "happily ever after" anyway, just to see what that route and ending was like.

The ENTIRE Dishonored Chaos System. especially Samuel at the end, who recognises you're so bad that he actually tries to sabotage you, knowing it would likely end in his death.
Well, the chaos system really decided what "path" you take in the game; I wouldn't necessarily call high chaos "punishing" the player so much as showing them the consequences of their actions. But yeah, Samuel counts, to a small extent. Although in that case you are pretty much looking for a fight anyway.
EDIT: I think I was wrong about the flare thing, I decided to look it up again and it looks like he does seem to fire it in any scenario, so scratch that :/. Not much difference though.
Samuel only fires the flare in High Chaos. In sort of medium Chaos he tells Corvo he's disappointed that he seemed to go out of his way to be brutal but leaves without firing the flare. In Low Chaos he tells Corvo that he's proud of him for completing what he needed to without unnecessary blood shed.
The increased weepers and rats are directly related to how much of a jerk Corvo is.

Also, you know, the fact that they guilt trip you by making Emily be super disturbed and kiiinda evil if you kill too many people. Nothing like coming back from a mission to find the little girl you've been protecting drawing disturbing photos of herself standing on a pile of bodies and talking about how the only way to rule is as a tyrant. Lol. And yes, I know this comment is super late, but I was amazed no one mentioned this little aspect.
What I did not like about the Chaos System, was the chaos rising when you got the perk that everything vanishes that you killed, which prevents food for the chaos rising rats.
First they explain it like, if you kill someone, rats will come to feed on it's corpse, and bloodflies as well, so don't kill someone. Then you learn the corpse-vanishing perk and you think you can kill now without a downside, but it's actually even worse than before!
I remember in the first You Don't Know Jack that if you buzzed in too early, Cookie got peeved at you and made you type the answer without even getting the question. If you were like me, and had nothing else to play for months, typing the correct answer, which requires you getting it right verbatim leaves him freaked out thinking you are some kind of psychic before recomposing himself and calling fair play for getting past his bullshit.

Enter the Gungeon sould be on here. If you shoot in the shop, he warns you, then doubles prices, then goes crazy and shoots everywhere, and locks you out of the shop for the rest of the run. Also I can't think of many things Enter the Gungeon doesn't punish you for.

That's got nothing on NecroDancer's shopkeep. One wrong bomb, knife throw or spell and you're as good as dead.
@@lordnul1708 cadence of hyrule with a beatable shopkeep but coupon item that you cant avoid making you auto steal next time you buy from a shop or just stright up kill you i think also btw it okay to blow up all of a shop at least in the dungeons as long as you dont hit the shopkeep with a bomb and you get item and rupees for breakin the shop and you get all stuff on sale if you beat the shopkeeper and its not to hard but still hard also btw found it because the shopkeeper said somthing like 'watch what you do with those bombs friend' and then basicly that was just asking me to bomb em but i got rekt but beat em after a few trys lol
They should have done this with Mafia 3. I hated watching people play like it was Saints Row or GTA. Running people over for no reason. Speeding and parking their cars in the middle of the street... All of those things should have been punishable or compelled the player to pay off someone to have the crime erased.
The cops would chase you in Mafia 2. I don’t know why they took it out in 3.

No mention of The Witcher 3? A single member of the town guard will give Geralt more trouble than any monster in the game. Oh and then there's the way that CDPR dealt with people who kill cows in White Orchard...
First and second parts of game had good punishment system too...
In Witcher 1 you were attacked by headhunter.
In Witcher 2 when you tried to enter town you were shooted by crossbowmens.

bully for PS2, if you got caught almost at all, you had to spend the next 10 minutes on a lawn mower mowing part of the football field. decide to run over the guy watching over you? he barely gets hit (unsatisfactory) and you now have to mow a LOT more of the field. keep messing up, and you could easily spend a real hour and a half mowing the damn field.
It goes from a small field then to a big ass one. There is the snow shoveling minigame but that's not bad and annoying as the field.

Jen B Skyrim is even worse. In zelda you just enter a new area and it's like nothing happened. In skyrim however you get a bounty and everyone tries to kill you, doesn't matter if you leave the area and come back.

Jen B Skyrim is worse than zelda, thats true but never ever try to talk to a shop owner in oblivion without looking if the interface reads speak not steal... honestly in skirym you can leave the area and go on with you life elswhere, in oblivion you cant, the guards following you from cheydinal to bravil, from the nothern border to Skyrim down to the border of Elswheyr and back. Worse than that, they have something like a Facebook notification steal in Leyawjin and every one guard knows about it... the only escape entering an obliviongate or the Shivering Isles, they even follow you into caves or take a swim if you try to escape in water, they even shoot your horse...

In morrowind there’s a limit to guards’ patience towards your crimes. Kill one or two innocent people and you’ll get away with only paying significant amount of money or sitting in prison, but kill ten and they won’t even talk to you but just kill.
In same Morr you can kill literally anybody even good people who play big role in main quest so you can kill, but if you do, game will give a warning that you’ve created a cursed world and won’t be able to finish quest.
Same Morr, khajit seller in Balmora (Ra’virr?) is my personal trauma. Steal his green cups and sell them to him.... and you’ll be immediately smashed with a giant hammer along with hysterical scream THESE ARE MY GREEN CUPS!!!!!
Annet Lokis steal a full soul gem from one Mage in the Balmora Mages Guild (aside from the one you need to steal for a quest), and if you bring her ANY full soul gem to enchant an item with after that, she and the entire rest of the Guild (including the Khajit who asked you to swipe from her in the first place) kill you all the way to death. Actually, any merchant attacks you if you sell an item similar to one you lift, even if you weren't caught.

In Metal Gear Solid 2 if you spend too much time using seagulls as target practice, the Colonel and Rose call you up and basically say you're a monster. Also I liked sucker punching Emma here and there too. lol
The animal murder is actually part of every MGS with animals present. the game is still a pretty big anti-war game.
I don't remember anybody giving me shit for killing animals in MGS3, but that's because you needed to do that for survival.

Not sure if anyone said this but in both Kingdoms of Amalur and Risen kill enough chickens and you end up fighting a killer chicken.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Stealing items from the shopkeepers in a dungeon results in lots of angry shopkeepers chasing after you and killing you easily
I know of another evil bunny. In Divinity 2: Ego Draconis when you kill around 35-40 rabbits, you evoke the wrath of...The Killer Bunny! A deadly "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" easter egg. The bunny spawns in a lvl 22 and unless your at least 20 it totally one shots you. FUN!!
