First time I visited the UK in the early Seventies we wer picked up by my Dad's aunt in a series one former Army Landrover. It was an extremely rough ride at the back. Probably because the vehicle was obviously clapped out.
A friend in Switzerland bought a red firefighter Landrover and after a lot of preparation drove it from Switzerland until Capetown. He said he had to fix nearly everything but it survived the Sahara, the jungle pathes and he could even sell it in South Africa.
Actually I drove Landcruisers in Indonesia. They were invincable vehicles. Even better than classic Jeeps and Landrovers. I served in the Swiss Army 45 years ago and I drove a lot of heavy duty offroad cars and trucks. So I know what vehicles are the real deal. I hate modern day luxury electronic junk.
I always planned to get my hands on a good old Landrover, but they started getting harder to get in reasonable condition. I bought a Grand Cherokee instead. This stupid car broke down so many times it was unbelievable. I had driven an old Cherokee through the entire Philippines and I regarded Jeeps as solid. If you own a Landrover there, you are being in an exclusive club. They are nearly impossible to get there and a status symbol!

I've just returned from a Tunisia desert trip in old Land Rovers, amazing machines in difficult terrain.

Used to go ferreting in my mate in his old landy. Shotguns and sandwiches in the back. Good times back in the 80s.
