  • It's time to take on the scruffy wheels. Without the budget to blow on a brand new set of tyres and rims I apply more elbow grease than ever before in an attempt to transform these original Land Rover Series 3 steel wheels into something worthy of being on this majestic beast of a car.

    looks ace!! i have to admit i did my wheels with a really thick almost tar like black paint and brush :O i didn't do half as much sanding prep as you here AND i used playing cards! hahaha safe to say they aren't the best but as its more of an off-road play toy they are mostly covered in mud :) and my chassis sadly just isn't worth looking at i thought id get away with welding here and there but looking at it the other day i really do think its a new chassis but i just can't do that it would have to go to my local guy so its a huge expense but i guess once its done it should outlast me so there is that :I great video thank you

      Thank you mate! I’d actually like to build a rough 4x4 play toy as well. Sucks about the chassis, it’s so frustrating how these cars rot.

    Nice upgrade. Looks more substantial but still very OEM. 👍🏻

      Thank you! I wanted to keep the classic look. It just needed a little tlc.

    Very nice, a '74? Same age as me. Promised myself one when I retire 😊 Canvas top conversion would really suit this.

      It’s a 1973. It’s a really good one too. I’m very pleased with it - very original and in decent condition.

    Looks very nice.
    I bought a 1966 S2A 88”, last year that came fitted with the 16” wheels from a 109”. Since mine has spent the entirety of its 58 years here in Central California, it truly has zero chassis or bulkhead rust. It was still being used daily on a cattle ranch. I do not intend to do a frame off restoration, as I don’t believe it needs it. It does however need a lot of TLC. Much like your project, I am doing a little at a time and am enjoying every little victory.
    If your interested, you can see my Land Rover on LandyAndy4X4 video Castle Air Museam part 2, toward the end.
    Cheers.

      Your S2A sounds amazing and central Cali is a wonderful place! By the sounds of it you won’t need to do a body off restoration for a long time still. I’ll check out Landy Andy 4x4.

    I got 4 wheels from my mate that he was no longer using from his 110 project so there on my S3, taken me 4 days to wire bush stripping the paint, rust converter/zinc primer and 2 layers of matt black rust-oleum each side so yeah can understand with time XD

      Yup it was a big time commitment but totally worth it.

    Really interesting video to watch, I had the same debate. I wanted the wheels closer to the line of the body work. In the end I splashed out and bought new rims (got them painted) and then new tyres, small fortune but I feel in the long term it’s worth it. I have kept the old rims in case I ever sell the Landy in the future.

      Thank you mate, I really appreciate your comment. You did the right thing, I’d liked to have done the same. This truck needs money spent in other areas unfortunately. We’ll see how it goes. Thanks again for watching.

    Hi Dale , did you put in tubes again in the new tires ?

    • @DaleReubin
      @DaleReubin  4 місяці тому

      Yes I did unfortunately. The wheel wasn't set up for running tubeless and I didn't want to pay any extra.

      @@stuartbradley9082 I’m in two minds. The short answer is yes. But. I’m considering removing the rear tub to do the chassis properly from all angles.

    If you decide to go for a soft top and sell the truck cab roof I would be interested in buying it off you. :)

      Oh wow! That's good to know. I have a potential buyer lined up for this vehicle and if he wants to make it a rag top then the cab will be up for sale!

    Wheel spacers wreck your wheel bearings!!!

    • @DaleReubin
      @DaleReubin  2 місяці тому

      I’ve heard this as well, I suppose the leverage on the bearing increases the further out the wheel sits. Then I guess deep dish wheels would do the same?

  • @andrewstratford1509
    @andrewstratford1509 6 місяців тому +2

    Just a question Dale, why did you not take the tires off and then spray the wheels?

    • @DaleReubin
      @DaleReubin  6 місяців тому +1

      Hey bro, a few reasons. One, I only have two axel stands so I couldn't do all the wheels at once. Secondly, I wanted to paint over the horrible silver balancing weights once the wheels and tyres were balanced and third, I didn't want the tyre place to scratch or damage the freshly painted wheels when they put the new tyres on.

    Next time lift the wheel with a lever or a bit of wood and guide it on , pleased you didn’t loose your thumb in that accident
